Regarding Comments

I have a confession to make: I never really read the comments made to my blog. That's probably obvious to most of you because, until today, I rarely (ever?) reply to them.

Yesterday, however, I made a post that asked a stupid question I really wanted an answer to, so I changed the settings of my blog. Now when people make comments to anything I post, those comments are e-mailed to me. It's kind of neat: I even received an e-mailed comment today from someone responding to an old post I made, the comments of which I'd never read through until now.

Anyway, I'm starting to think that with the imminent death of the forum this will be where I publically communicate with all of you... via my blog's comments. Does that make sense?

I was wondering, though: should I start allowing anonymous posts again? I stopped allowing them awhile back because after I posted a certain chapter of "Suburban Girl" my blog got flooded with lots of (since removed) racist posts, all made by anonymous posters. But if I'm going to use the blog's comments as a way to interact with all of you, should I start allowing anonymous posts again? I mean, a lot of people don't have a Blogger or OpenID account (both of which can post comments here) and though it's easy to do so, many people don't want to bother with creating one or the other.

So what should I do? Start allowing anonymous comments or keep it the way it is? Let me know... in the comments!!! :P

Hey Shannon,
Being a long time member of this site (and of your works)my opinion is, that if you continue to allow posts to your blog, then to continue to not allow anonymous postings.

Anyone can easily set up a semi anonymous account, like the one I have through gmail, but that extra step can help weed out all the crazies we've seen in the past.
anyho, thats my 2 cents...

Seconded. Its simple to create an account, and if you keep it set the way it is, it means people who actually want to talk or have something valuable to add will, whereas anon will get every riff raff from here to tim-buck too yelling and screaming lol.

Thirded. If someone wants to say something badly enough they will go through the little trouble it takes to be able to speak their mind. If you allow anonymous postings you'll get flooded with garbage, including many one or two word posts that say nothing and others designed to antagonize to get a rise out of you or someone else.

Be cool,
Matt

OMG, I can't believe it. The forum really is gone. After all these years I couldn't wrap my mind around that it might actually disappear. It's the end of an era, sniff.

No don't let people hide. you don't have to use your real name (as I don't lol) but letting people hide behind that, would give them the freedom to slam your posts for what ever reason. atleast this way they have to find some way to be identified. and it's much better this way as people actually say something constructive or supportive to you. you may want to go back to the old posts and see what was said :)
