Chapter Twenty-five

November 2, 1958

Gloria stood back from the large windows facing the runway, Gladys and the kids were in front of her watching Johnny's and Maeve's plane take off. Gladys looked like she was just as intrigued as Mark.

When the plane was gone from sight, Gladys turned and grinned at Gloria. She and Gladys gathered the kids and walked them through the terminal to the parking lot and the two cars. Mark and Walter wanted to study the control tower standing over the terminal. Airports fascinated Gloria. She'd been to Grand Central Station in New York, Union in Cincinnati; she'd traveled by train and by air, and she was still surprised at how small — no they were large, spread out rather than monumentally tall — airports were in comparison. She finally got Mark and Walter in the Buick, walked around to the driver's window and leaned in to kiss Kitty, who looked terrible.

"You okay?" Gloria asked.

Kitty nodded, "I can manage."

"Would you want to go out when we get home?"

Kitty nodded. She tried to smile, her eyes were red, her face pale and drawn. Mark sat beside her; Gloria was glad that Darlene was in the back.

Gloria squeezed Kitty's fingers on the wheel, turned and got into the Impala. She laid the paper bag on the seat between Gladys and her.

"I found a city map for you. Would you be willing to watch the kids this afternoon? Kitty and I are going out for a while."

Gladys smiled and gave a nod.

"You're in a good mood." Gloria started the car and followed Kitty out of the parking lot.

"I like it here. I don't mind staying at Kitty's. It's good for Walter. I like the girls."

"Even Darlene."

"Even Darlene. I see myself in her. I want to grab her by the shoulders and shake her. I want to tell her you don't have to do these things. I'm not sure it would make any difference. Goodness knows."

"If she tries to run away again, should we let her? Look, the kids see something."

Gladys looked to her right. "I don't see anything. Just water."

"Should we?"

"You want my opinion? Darlene's already different from what she was a few days ago. She runs away she's running away from something that scares her to something that doesn't but should. The thing that scares her is she begins to see that the thing that doesn't should."

Gloria laughed. "Gladys, you'll have to run that one by me again."

Gloria drove her Rambler; she led Kitty's Impala. They stopped first for lunch at a diner, Kitty's The Pelican.

They found seats in a booth; Gloria looked at the menu.

"To think, I used to work here," Kitty said.

"Sorry you still don't?"

Kitty grinned. "No. I'm happier, goodness how my feet ached at the end of the day. You'd never believe how much coffee I poured. Meeting Johnny, it was so romantic."

Gloria put her menu down. "You know I first saw him at Joe's. It's hard to believe that it was only was a month or so ago. He'd sit there and nurse his beer. I knew something was going on. There were a lot of men going in and out of that back room. I heard things." She looked up. "I'll get what you get."

Kitty smiled at the waitress. "We'll have egg salad sandwiches and coffee, Mil. How's life treating you?"

"Not bad. Hear Johnny's going to be out of town the next couple of days." She put the order pad in her apron pocket.

"One of us will make sure you get your paper each day until he comes back. He made us promise." Kitty smiled to Gloria as Mil walked away. "There's another one. I walked away from customers like that. Special ones like Johnny got a special walk."

"I remember seeing a pretty blonde with Johnny at Joe's. I liked the way she dressed. Like a bohemian. I liked watching you two together."

"Tell me again what you were doing at Joe's?" Kitty had her elbows on the table, her chin resting in her fingers.

"I had quit teaching. I wanted adventures. I had money set aside, I could live a year or two on it. I wanted to experience life, not watch it pass me by."

"So you were at Joe's"

"Watching it pass me by." Gloria smiled. "I took the chance. It was the night when you came in, undressed in the bar, walked behind him to the room. You both went in. The door closed behind you. That magic door. By then I knew, or thought I knew, what went on in that room. Johnny came out later, alone. He sat by his beer. I got up from my table, walked to his and sat down. I told him I wanted him to take me into that room."

"Honey, you could have gone yourself."

Gloria shook her head. "I could have, maybe; I never would have. I needed someone like Johnny to push me through the door." Gloria and Kitty sat back as Mil put the plates on the table and poured coffee.

Gloria leaned forward. "After lunch I am going to call a friend. I am going to take you over to his house, leave you with him and his friends. You can come home later tonight. Gladys and I can manage."

"You're pushing me through that door." Kitty picked up her sandwich. "You don't want to join me?"

"I need to see a teacher friend. She has family in Philadelphia."

Kitty nodded. "Okay." She bit into the sandwich and chewed.

Gloria smiled at her. "You'll do it?"

Kitty grinned and gave a nod while chewing.

Kitty sat in Al's house. Three of his friends were here; several more were coming over later. Al was out with Gloria. They made such moon eyes at each other, it was silly they didn't just go off and have a quickie. Anyway, she thought, Al might be a while.

His friends were cute, youngish, her age, a little older. Not suit and tie types. She thought she was interrupting their listening to the ball game on the radio, drinking beers and talking brave about girls. Now they had a real live one, they didn't know what to do.

"Could one of you show me the rest room?" She stood up. A slender, sunbleached blond guy stood. She could never remember names and people. Al was easy, but Danny or Dan, Scott and Bill weren't; whoever he was pointed the way.

She'd been hoping he'd actually show her. She found the bathroom. Al liked to keep the blinds down. The house was dimly lit, brown rough plaster walls, wood floors. Nice, but she liked light in her home.

When Kitty was done, she folded her clothes and left them on the hamper. Pink bathroom, lighter. Al was neat, there wasn't stuff strewn all over. She hadn't had to stumble through a month's dirty clothes. She set her sandals on her pants, sole side up.

She walked back into the living room and sat in her seat. "So, who's playing today?"

It took them a minute to figure that out. They said team names as if they meant anything to her. She was a girl, for godsakes. She grinned at them. "I hope my being here isn't keeping you from something you'd rather do." She stretched her legs out and curled her toes.

They shook their heads in unison. Maybe Al and Gloria did go off for a quickie. He was taking forever out there. "Well," Kitty said. "Who's going to be first? In here, in the bedroom, or all over, I don't care. I just want to be fucked." She leaned forward. "Eeny, Meeny, Miney, Mo. You're it." She pointed to Dan or Danny, Bill, Scott, who knows.

Kitty hung onto the bed as she was fucked. She had her knees on the floor, up against the bed; she was bent over, arms outstretched, hands gripping the sheets. She wondered if they had called friends; this had been going on for hours. In her pussy, in her ass, in her mouth. In the living room on the rug, in the dining room on a table, in the bedroom, on the bed, on the floor. She could hear the game in the background. The announcer's voice, crowd noises, it was a blur; she had no idea who was winning. Everything was a blur.

When she parked behind Gloria and looked at the house, a nondescript bungalow in the midst of identical bungalows in what had been a fruit orchard, orange trees in the well kept yards, she hadn't known what to expect. Perhaps Gloria's friends were elderly retired teachers with strange desires. Perhaps Gloria's friends were . . . She'd had no idea where Gloria was taking her. What strange realm she'd find on the other side of the closed door. Gloria's adventure.

Kitty wailed; she bit the sheets, tried to rise off her knees while a cock rammed her. "It's a home run," she heard the announcer yelling. "It's a home run." She relaxed, felt the cock in her. Her whole world centered around her pelvis; she panted as she fucked back. She wondered who was winning, what inning they were in, boys versus slut. Another one would be at bat as soon as this one was done running the bases.

Kitty wiped her face on the sheet. She wondered what Gloria was doing. She wondered at the grace of friends. He was done. She felt a new one in her pussy. She threw a curve ball. "Fuck my ass, bastard." He swung; she tried to fall through the bed. She fell back into him, pushed her ass at him. "That's right, fuck my ass." She pulled herself forward, raised her head and wailed.

Gloria parked at Kitty's, sat for a moment in her car. She'd set things in motion. A little step. She got out, thought about it and got back in to roll up the windows. It might rain.

She walked through Kitty's to the dining room. The kids were out in the yard. The girls sunbathing, which Gloria was sure was driving the neighborhood boys crazy. Later, Gloria thought, she'd mow the yard. Short shorts, halter top. It would be her turn to drive their father's crazy. She sat by Gladys who was copying the schedules for next week.
