Chapter Ten

Sunday, October 19, 1958

Johnny was dozing, Maeve slept next to him. He felt the bed shift. He opened his eyes. Kitty looked down at him with a smile on her face. Her blonde hair was unkempt. She settled under the covers, her arm across Johnny's chest, her hand on Maeve's arm. Maeve stirred. Johnny studied Kitty's face. "Well?" he asked.

"I like her," Kitty said. She stroked Maeve's arm. "I think my son will like her."

Maeve opened her eyes. "And?"

"I like her. She's inexperienced. Hasn't done much, but she's willing and eager." Kitty's hand touched Maeve's cheek. "She's not anywhere as good as you."

Maeve nodded slowly. She sat up in bed. "My turn." She leaned across Johnny so that Kitty and she could kiss. She sat up, spun her legs out of bed and stood.

Johnny watched her while Kitty's fingers danced across his chest toward his stomach. "I better get up, too." He turned his head and kissed Kitty, then sat up.

"I'm going to nap until you guys and Michael decide." Kitty shut her eyes. "I think she'll work out given half a chance."

Johnny dressed then walked through his house to the former double car garage where Gloria was waiting. He opened the door and stood looking in.

Maeve was naked, Gloria was naked, shorter than Maeve, possibly plump, certainly she didn't have the spectacular figure Maeve had. Maeve and she were on the bed at this end of the room, talking in low voices.

Johnny entered the room, shutting the door behind him, and walked to the impromptu counter they had put in. He started coffee, opened the refrigerator and took out sandwich makings. Periodically he looked over at Maeve and Gloria. Maeve seemed unusually serious.

When the sandwiches were made and coffee was poured, Johnny walked over to the picnic table at the far side of the room. He set the tray down, arranged the cups and plates with the napkins for three places and returned with the tray to the counter. He started another pot of coffee and checked the refrigerator for beer; he was okay.

Johnny approached Maeve and Gloria. "Lunch?" he asked.

Maeve looked up at him, with still the serious expression on her face, and nodded. Gloria was sitting erect, her legs crossed, her hands relaxed in her lap. She seemed to be bearing up well. Johnny was beginning to realize how anxious the whole wedding thing was making Maeve. Two weeks to go and here he dropped a big surprise in the midst of all her plans. He smiled at her and held out his hand. He purposefully tried not to glance overmuch at Gloria.

They ate their lunch quietly, small talk about weather petered out fairly quickly. Johnny was just about to leave Gloria to Maeve's devices when he heard a knock on the door. "Come in," he said loudly.

Michael walked into the room, shut the door behind him and stood.

Johnny finished his coffee, he rose to his feet, and walked with his empty plate to the counter. He turned and watched Michael walk to the table and sit next to Maeve. They kissed.

"I'm just going to observe," Johnny said. "You and Maeve are the bosses this afternoon."

Neither of them acknowledged his words.

"Gloria, do everything they tell you to do, okay?"

Gloria looked over to Johnny for a second then returned her gaze to Maeve and Michael.

Johnny waited while they all sat quietly, no one moving. Finally, he went to the refrigerator, got out a bottle of Black Label and popped the cap. He carried the beer to Michael, set it on the table next to him.

Michael said a soft, "Thanks."

"Would you want something to drink, Maeve?"

Maeve turned to Johnny and gave a quick smile. "A coke, dear." Then she turned back to face Gloria.

Johnny walked to the refrigerator and was about to open it when Michael said, "Another beer please, And I'll need rope and a switch."

Johnny nodded to himself. He got the beer and coke, popped the caps off the bottles with the opener and carried them to the table. He went back to the counter, looked underneath. In a box he found rope; he selected several pieces, then he stood and went out the side door to his back yard. He went to the garden shed and rummaged until he found the bundle of planting stakes; yard long pieces of bamboo about a quarter inch thick. He selected several and went back inside.

Gloria was on her knees before Michael in the center of the room, between the table and bed. Maeve stood to one side.

Johnny walked to Michael, who held his left hand out. Johnny handed him the switches; Michael took just one.

"Maeve gets one too, since you have several," Michael said. He turned to Johnny. "You observe." Michael turned back to Gloria. "Throw the rope beside her." He paused. "We'd feel better if you stepped back. Thank you."

Gloria held her eyes to the ground, not watching Maeve or Michael. No one said a word.

There was a knock on the door to the house. Johnny walked across and opened it. He motioned Alex and Charles to silence. They followed him to the small wood table by the fridge. They all sat on the chairs there and watched.

Michael finally spoke. "You think you may be good enough to be a whore. We'll see." He paused. "The rules are simple. You make money for your pimp selling your body for others to use as they wish." Michael extended the bamboo rod in his left hand and drew its point along Gloria's cheek.

"First rule. All the money you make goes to your pimp. Every penny." He drew the point along the top of her shoulder, then down her arm.

"Hit her," Michael said.

Maeve swung her switch hand and hit Gloria on her left butt cheek. Gloria jumped, then returned to her former position. She never looked up at them standing over her. Maeve drew the point of her switch along the edges of the welt she'd just made on Gloria.

"Second rule. All the money you make goes to your pimp. Every penny." The point of his switch pressed against Gloria's breast, relaxed and dropped down her stomach. "Hit her."

Maeve swung her switch and struck the back of Gloria's left thigh. Maeve struck her a second time, then stopped to trace the edges of the third welt with the bamboo rod's tip.

Gloria settled down, her head hung lower.

"Maeve," Michael asked, "how many rules are there? For how to be a good whore?" The point of his switch traced the top of Gloria's right thigh, it slipped between her legs, came up and rested in her slit.

Maeve laughed. "A thousand and one." She used her switch to turn Gloria's chin toward her. "A thousand and one."

Michael took a step toward Gloria, his switch still between her legs. "What is the thousand and first?"

Maeve knelt, her switch touching Gloria's chin. "Make sure you let them know you love it."

"Hit her."

Maeve lifted the switch away from Gloria's chin, then tapped her with it. Maeve leaned toward Gloria, took her chin in her hand and held it while she kissed her. Gloria visibly relaxed.

Maeve held Gloria's chin while she spoke to her. "If I ever find that you've held out on Johnny, I'll beat you bloody. Understand?"

Gloria nodded.

"Say it."

"I will never, ever, hold out on Johnny. If I do you'll beat me bloody." Gloria opened her eyes and looked at Maeve. They were green, moist, swimming in tears.

"You have beautiful eyes, dear."

Gloria blinked.

Maeve looked sideways to Michael. "She's all right. What's next?"

Michael sawed the switch between Gloria's legs. "I need to be sure she can fuck." He took a step toward Gloria so his crotch was pressing her ear. "You can fuck, can't you, princess?"

Gloria slowly nodded.

"I hope so." He took a step away. "I'm going to take her for a couple of hours. See how she does." Michael tossed the switch to the cement floor. "If she does well, I'll bring her back here."

Maeve smiled. She touched Gloria's cheek and stood up. "And if not?"

"She can walk home." Michael went to the picnic table, picked up his second beer and finished it. "That is thirsty work." He turned to Gloria. "Need anything to drink? Need to go to the bathroom? Best do it now." He turned to Maeve. "Maeve, we need to borrow a robe."

Gloria stood up. "Bathroom." She walked to the open stall behind Johnny, Alex and Charles. She smiled at Johnny's wink as she passed. Alex and Charles watched her closely.

When Gloria was done she returned to the center of the room.

Michael waited, smiling. "Wasn't too bad, was it?"

"Those things really hurt," Gloria said.

Michael laughed. "Maeve knows that, doesn't she, Johnny?" He held out his hand and took the lightweight robe from Maeve.

Maeve grinned at Gloria. "Johnny hits harder than I do."

Gloria watched them and nodded.

"Okay. Gloria, more rules, "Michael said. "For the next week you'll always be naked in this house. You'll undress outside, before you enter. You'll carry this robe outside, then put it on. You can dress in your car." He paused. "If Johnny says you can.

"For the next week, if I bring you back, you'll be available for any man here." He looked at Maeve. "Do you think she should drop to her knees?"

"No. And it's any man or woman."

"You're the boss." He smiled. "After Johnny, of course."

Maeve grinned. "Of course."

"Well, Gloria. Ready?"

Gloria looked to Maeve, then Michael. "Ready."

Maeve took Gloria's hand and leaned to her. She whispered in her ear. "Good luck. Kitty likes you. I'm starting to like you." Maeve kissed her on the lips. They kissed. Maeve moved her mouth to Gloria's ear. "He's all bark with just a little bite. All right?"

Gloria nodded. Maeve stepped away.

"You lead, then," Michael said.

They left the garage. In the garage Johnny and the others could hear the front door open and close, then a car's doors open and close. A moment later, the car started, then drove off.

Maeve sat next to Johnny. "Michael's right. That's hard work." She took his chin, pulled him close to her and they kissed. She stood. "I'm going to take a nap. You boys have business to discuss, I'm sure."

Johnny and Kitty were sitting at the dining room table. Johnny had a pot roast in the oven. While it was cooking, he was bringing his ledger up to date. Kitty was working on the schedule for the next week. Maeve, Charles and Alex were doing a photo shoot in the garage. At least that's what they said they were doing.

Johnny glanced up at Kitty and gave a brief smile, then returned to his journal entries. She looked great in her men's white shirt, only partially buttoned, sleeves rolled up above her elbow. She was too busy to notice him. Her pencil rolled between her fingers as she thought. Another person meant four copies of the schedule. Pretty soon they'd have to hire a secretary. Johnny thought for a moment about secretaries, taking dictation; about having someone dependable to answer the telephone. Maybe they'd be able to step up from the motel gig and weekend parties. He heard the front door open, then close. He waited.

A few minutes later Michael entered the room. He had his typical smile on his face. As if he knew something other people didn't. He nodded to Johnny, pulled out a chair to sit down.

Kitty asked him, "How did she do? Is she in?"

"She's in." Michael sat. "She's in the garage now."

Johnny stood, "I'll get you a beer."

Kitty stood, bent down and gave Michael a kiss on his balding head. "Thanks." She said to Johnny, "I'll be in the garage if you need me."

Johnny set a beer before Michael, carried another to his seat. He called out. "Dinner will be ready in about an hour."

Kitty nodded as she left.

Michael took a sip of beer. "They have you cooking now?"

"Today's my day. Tomorrow's Maeve's, the next is Kitty's. Guess we need to add Gloria."

Michael shook his head. "I guess it's worth it. But I . . ."

"It's worth it."

Michael smiled. "I envy you. If I weren't married," he took another drink of beer, "happily married, mind you, I'd take that girl and . . . well, I'm married." He grinned at Johnny. "I still get to fuck her. Her and Maeve and Kitty and you'll never see me do the cooking or the dishes."

"You're just jealous."

"I am." Michael finished his beer. Johnny stood up to get another for him, but Michael waved him down. "I'm okay." He paused. "She's inexperienced, but she's willing. She does what she's told. Not a bit of complaining." Michael sat back in his seat. "She needs to do more blowjobs, she's still learning. She needs practice. She's an okay fuck." Michael gave a quick smile. "Okay, a great fuck. Tight. Moves under you like . . . you already know. She cries out. It gets a man's blood going to hear her cry out." Michael was silent for a minute.

"She's not really ready to take it up the ass yet. Start her out slow. A finger first, then two. Take it slow and easy so she's relaxed. Lots of KY. Then find someone small for her first few times." He grinned at Johnny. "They both will love it."

Johnny nodded. He glanced at the clock then back at Michael.

"I took her out to the Bayside Pier. Let the fishermen use her. She did them all, even the few who wanted seconds." He grinned. "The back seat in Kitty's old car is a mess. I forgot to take a towel." He paused. "Anyway, they fucked her or watched while I tended their lines. Didn't catch a thing. Never do. Not lucky I guess." He smiled. "I think it was sixteen." He shut his eyes. "Seventeen. That's right. Seventeen." He opened his eyes. "Nothing fancy. Didn't take her to a bar and have her fuck for beers." Michael patted his belly. "I'm having to watch it." He looked at Johnny. "Then I tried her out." He grinned. "She's okay."

"You're jealous."

"Of course." Michael leaned forward. "Johnny, I told the fishermen I'd bring her by next Sunday, same time. My son's birthday is next week, I thought I'd make sure he was there so he'd get . . ."

Johnny smiled and stood. "I have to get busy in the kitchen. Sunday at the Bayside Pier is okay." He walked into the kitchen and opened the refrigerator. "See if you can't get the men to cough up something. Money or fish. Anything." Johnny shut the refrigerator. "Your son can have her the rest of the day, all night if he wants."

"Thanks . . ."

"That's what friends are for, isn't it?" Johnny dropped the mixed vegetables into a pan. "Will it be his first time?"

"Who knows with kids these days." Michael sat back in his seat. "Yes, I think it will be."

"Then tell Gloria it is; she'll make it special." Johnny put the pan on the stovetop, checked the roast in the oven. He stood and returned to Michael. "Let's not have his first time be in the back seat of a jalopy after a bunch of smelly old fishermen. Have them meet at the beach." He grinned. "Like it was chance." He turned back to the stove. "Make it special." He paused. "Fish would be perfect."

After dinner in the recreation room, Kitty remained behind as Johnny, Maeve, Gloria, Michael, Alex and Charles walked to the garage. Kitty needed to make copies of the next week's schedule for the four.

"I want to be first with Gloria," Johnny said to Maeve as they walked hand in hand. "If that's all right with you, dear."

Maeve squeezed Johnny's fingers lightly. "Dear, you know you have a problem with cramping if you exert yourself right after dinner." She stopped and they kissed. "The pot roast was wonderful." They continued walking. "I think you should wait. Give your dinner a chance to digest." She paused. "I'll be first with Gloria." She looked over her shoulder and grinned. "She's a popular girl tonight."

Johnny gave her fingers a squeeze. "You be first with Gloria. I'll watch for a while, then we can have a turn."

"Back in our room?"

"Wonderful." Johnny opened the door to the garage. "Kitty and Gloria should be able to keep the boys entertained."
