Interesting Reading

The article "The Lost Boys" in the current issue of Wired details the flight of men ages 18-34 from watching television to the Internet and video games. Apparently, 71% of this group visits a porn site at least once a month. (Which, if you're reading this, you probably already know!)

I think that one of the things leading to declining TV viewing is the pervasiveness of the ads. Not too long ago there was just 8 minutes of ads per hour; that number is now up to 15 minutes and more. I think that the ad minutes finally saturated and they're now driving away viewers.

Plus, when they cancel good shows ("Angel," "Wonderfalls") and keep showing more and more crap squeezed in between the commercials, what do they expect?

I also blame reality shows. I don't even know why they call it "reality show" if the show is fully scripted and directed. I have to admit that some of them are somehow addictive. I woul have to agree that there are better things to do than to watch commercials.

Or firefly.

Oh yeah, how could I forget Firefly? But hey, at least we're getting a big screen movie next year, so revenge shall be ours!

The only 'reality' show we watch is Amazing Race, which manages to rise above the rest of the crap by being a) interesting; and b) an actual competition, not a popularity contest. Oh, and stuff on The Food Network, but I'm not sure if that counts.

Now, if they'd have a dating show with all lesbians, then maybe I'd change my mind. (Like that will happen anytime soon!)

i think it's unfair to blame it on net porn (eventhough ive dl my fair share lol). People crave interactivey and that what the net provides. Instead of being limited to what you can watch and when you can watch, the net allows the freedom of choice that's pretty hard to compete with.

Good points Kelly. I've been thinking that for a couple years now that TV viewing is down because it treats us like we're morons. whereas on the 'net we are in control (this may be why many of us rebel against so called portal sites as well). Just watch how local tv news talks to us from the idiot box for example. Or the other day as the Women's marathon was starting up the talking head made this dramatic over hyped harvard grad sounding statement to make himself sound important: "lost to the athletes of course is the historical significance of the very grounds they compete on for this event..." I screamed at the TV litterally! As if the runners didn't read up on Greek history before going there! Hello, many of these athletes are well educated people anyway! 'nuff said
