The changing face of the high school prom
This is another one of those "gee, I'm feeling old" things.
Elissa Gootman of the New York Times reports on the modern high school prom in "The Killer Gown Is Essential, but the Prom Date? Not So Much"
The biggest change? More and more kids these days choose to go stag.

The article only interviewed girls who were going solo - I wonder if girls at that age are braver about breaking with tradition or if boys at that age just aren't interested in going to that sort event unless they have a girl to show for it.
I think that prom has always been a bigger deal for the girls than for the boys. Even I, who back in high school didn't see much need for these sorts of things, felt the desire to go to my senior prom. I convinced one of my male friends to take me (as back then going alone was a big no-no) and we had a good time, though I'd hardly classify it as a major high point in my life.
