This time I just opened the text file and away I went with the hosts file. Once the DNS gets fixed, I'll remove it from my hosts file, so I don't get locked in, just in case the actual number changes.
I asked our No Name Tech Geek (he denied being one) how he found the fix for connecting to asstr.org. This was part of our email conversation.
From the informaion I have gleaned, I have created a page at our White Productions Public access area with some step by step instructions on how to add the new asstr.org IP address and fix the connection problems.
These should work but I have had reports from people that they couldn't get the changes made and gain access. [Typical windoz!!
] This is probably from not running notepad in 'run as administrator' mode or having to reboot windoz several times before the changes take effect. Once done successfully, it really fixes the problem. Well, running Linux will fix the problem. This just cements over a huge pothole in windoz.
Let me know if you have found an easier method or if something works better. I seriously doubt that it could be anything wrong with my instrucions.

It could be a combination of things such as the SSL cert expiring (because the CA can't connect to update???) or the DNS got marfed up - purposely or from a glitch. I just know that at its base is the lack of desire on the part of the mods/owners to keep watch and update/maintain the server, domain and DNS records. All the rest stems from that.
They are hosted by Hurricane Electric in Fremont, CA, a big server farm with many datacenters. Usually if the hosting bill is unpaid, the server farm just pulls the plug, so nothing would work. So I doubt it's from that. [Don't ask me how I know.
] So I don't think it's a matter of sending a check.
I'm going to take off my tin foil hat and state specifically that I do not believe our wonderful and all beneficent government pressured HE to cause the problems. Nope, I do not claim that. [YMMV]
If you had included an email so I could respond directly, I've got some links and interesting info that you might be interested in. I'll even lend you some of my linux guru-ness if you want, although I think you'd be getting the short end of that deal.

Yeah, suddenly there appears to be a problem with the asstr.org domain. The SSL cert has expired, which is odd as it is an automated process which renews the cert every 90 days. Plus the asstr.org domain isn't resolving properly. So there's going to be little access until someone takes some interest in looking at the server and fixing the problems. Unfortunately, if the past several years are an indication, that may take a while - if ever.
I originally first thought that it was just another screw up of the asstr server, but I had problems with a couple of other sites similarly. I just didn't pursue it until I got that great email above. Made the changes and Vallhalla! It worked.
A kind anonymous tech nerd sent me the above email showing how to work around these problems. And it works! But the problem is, if readers can't get to my page to read this information, it's sorta moot. Can't thank him/her enough for sending me this information tho'. Make sure you use notepad (not Wordpad) and just type that last line at the end of whatever's in the hosts file already.
BTW, for those of us Linux tech nerds, it's much easier: sudo echo 64.71.155.222 www.asstr.org >> /etc/hosts [I'm sure my higher tech readers will let me know if that's not correct

Let's see, I think I've answered this question somewhere before. Let me go look... Oh yeah, on Feb 17th and Dec 15th, in response to similar questions. Among others.
Basically, as some may or may not realize, I have a life outside of my asstr.org pages. One of the things that takes up my time and efforts is our White Productions member site. It is there that we have posted over 260 chapters of Paul's story and are posting 2 each week or 8 per month.
I'll definitely let Paul know about your interest in his story and your desire for more. He appreciates any and all comments. And we have discussed this dilemma. It is one of the few disadvantages of writing serialized stories. However, if you were to join us and have full access to the 267 (as of today) chapters, then I'm sure that you would still want more than we have posted there and feel that they're "very sparsely" released. I really don't know how to solve that problem. Other than just not letting anyone know that there's lots more that are written. [See Paul's response to the March 12th comment- second below this one.]
Additionally, it really takes an incredibly lot of time and work to convert the stories to html format and update all of the site pages. All for free. So as I've written on my Home page on the Site Updates: "The stories and site pages are updated sporadically, whenever I feel like it or the urge hits." Again, all for free.

The bad news is that Paul's working on something like over 1250 chapters, so what's gone before that is pretty much set in stone. He just sent me newly proofed chapters 501-600 and I havevn't even gotten through reading the 200's yet. We've posted over 260 chapters now for our members on our White Productions member site and we're posting 2 each week. That's the place to be.

Paul responds: It really does make it hard for readers to make suggestions, come up with ideas, and request particular scenes when I am so far ahead of them with the writing. That was pretty much how the early part of the series developed; it was mostly me responding to the readers' requests. Of course, the difficulty with that was that different readers had different tastes and what one reader wanted another definitely did not want, so I tried to include something for everyone. Eventually the series settled and took on a life of its own and tended to focus more on the older characters, although I was conscious of the need to include younger ones from time to time to please those readers who preferred that.

I really appreciate your comments. I have had some complain that I'm "too wordy" or that there's too much talk and not enough stroke action. As I told the commenter below, à chacun son goût. I usually don't write "stroke stories" as I enjoy knowing my characters and telling their stories, what they like and do. I've said before it's story telling, not quick stroke material. [Although anyone who whacks off to them is fine with me. I sometimes do that when I go back and re read some of my stuff.
I've also said before that I write my stories for myself and just share them on the outside chance that some other perv may enjoy reading them. So I'm not writing to please anyone, although I LOVE to get ideas and suggestions for other or future stories. That def does help with the inspiration and motivation.

As I've mentioned on my asstr pages before, the owners/admins of asstr.org have indicated that they have no time nor inclination/desire to maintain the asstr.org site/server and haven't for a few years. It runs on Linux/unix so it's pretty automajik and almost bulletproof. As a result, no new author accounts are being created and it seems there's no good way to even contact the admins. It really is a shame and a loss for us all.
I only have my own pages on asstr.org as the account was created 10 or 11 years ago when the site was being maintained and updated. So I only have control (what little there is) of my own story pages. FTP (file transfer protocol, which us tech geeks know how to use) still seems to work, so I have been able to keep my pages updated. I have no control over anything else, and sometimes depending on how the server is or is not working, just handling my pages can be an iffy proposition.
Asstr.org is a true treasure trove and, now, unique resource on the web. I would really hate to see it stop working completely and go away. Even as limited as it is now, it still provides a value for readers and a platform for us authors who can navigate the tech.
There are a number of erotic fiction websites on the web but none can hold a candle to the freedom and lack of censorship that asstr.org has. And none that I'd recommend other than our White Productions member site
I wish you luck with getting your story posted online. I always try to encourage new writers as much as I can, as "there are no new ideas under the sun" as some sage once said, only combinations of 26 letters that may or may not make sense to others. It's amazing what can be done with those 26 letters and their combinations. [Yeah, I know there's upper and lower case, numerals and punctuation, but you get the point.] Like music, absolutely stunning what can be done with 12 tones and their variations.

Chapter 9 is the last chapter I've written in that series and I don't anticipate doing much more with it. I'd like to but my subconscious cesspool doesn't take my conscious commands seriously and while I've had some conscious ideas, nothing has come spewing out lately. What can I say? Like I've said, my characters live in my mind and all I do is transcribe what they do and say. If they're not coming out of hiding for me, I guess there's not a lot I can do.

I really do appreciate your comments. I really enjoyed writing Solitude. I've mentioned before that it was done as a story entry for a contest on another erotic fiction site. We were given a paragraph and were to write our entry based on it being the first paragraph of the story. It was really amazing. I don't know what happened but suddenly I had the complete story in my mind- beginning with that paragraph, the middle and the denouement ending. Plus all the (2) characters. Since I've been a Star Trek fan since it played on teevee in black and white, the ending was just sort of a foregone conclusion.
Now I don't plan out and outline my stories. I just get the idea in my ol' cesspool and it swirls around there until it comes spewing out. I try to bang the digital bits fast enough to catch most of it. This one was almost fully formed. I could see the Orion child approaching the cabin where Picard was "getting away". I could almost smell the smoke emanating from the chimney and hear the crash of the waves on the shoreline. It was just all there!
About the time of that contest, the story site was starting a purge of stories with any underage characters. I wrote a long prologue (harangue) about the stupidity of that and the "underage" taboo in fiction. It was published on the site and no, I didn't win or come even close. But it was so much fun that I continued to write another chapter, Solitude Revisited. Both have been posted here on these pages. Over the years, I've still enjoyed that storyline and have written a third chapter, Solitude Irrevocably Lost that gets even more raunchy. And I'd like to continue it with a fourth if I can.
As far as the writing, I suppose it's a little of both - the setting, characters and storyline. It's just a little different than most of what I write. It's really not fan fic as all I did was use the plot mechanism of the holodeck and the character of the dear old curmudgeon space captain. That lets me quickly get the reader into familiar territory without having to do all the setup and description of it all.

Guess it didn't hurt last time because I had my ping resistant underwear on. [That's a lie... because I don't wear any underwear at all.
The 3DX graphics that Onix created do really add some visual interest to the stories. Even stand alone, they are great. He did 8 galleries of illustrations for my Porn Families - Chrissie series and several illustrations of the little blue Orion waif for my Solitude series.
The 3D software that Onix uses is DAZ3D, which is free to dowload and use. Of course, they try to sell you all kinds of addons, figures and other things. It seems to be great software, other than I have no capability for using it. If you've used Poser, I suspect it would be just a shallow learning curve for you to pick up and learn DAZ. For me, the learning "curve" is more like a horizontal line.
Yeah, it probably IS illegal, depending on where you are located, but the cost of legally pursuing it is way more than the cost of the "license". So they get away with it. And there's probably some fine print in the shrink wrap license (that you didn't read) that "gives" them the right. Oh well.

I've worked on both Zoo Mom 24 A and B and seem to have them beaten into submission, so I will post one of them soon. Hope that will make you happy.
Probably because she doesn't actually have any boobs, but I have to agree and suspect the software rendering stuff. Onix did a great job, and told me that I could get the software and do some work myself. Duh. Not!

You must only have been reading since yesterday.
I'm glad you like the stories. It is interesting when I go back and re read some of them that I wrote years ago and think, "Damn, I don't remember writing that but damn, it's good!" Then I start trying to correct the errors and edit and add to it.
No matter what, I DO appreciate your comments and I will continue to post some of my Zoo Mom series here once they've been on our member site for a while. But I have a number of new series that are - if I say so myself - as good as Zoo Mom.and will be posting them there exclusively.
I hope you'll keep reading, mine or others. So you can broaden your horizons.
