"A stranger is just a friend you haven't met."
Jennifer never could get used to the number of reporters trying to get a question or a photo in between the time she went from the studio door to her car. There were masses of them, fortunately not permitted to come to close. Otherwise she might never even have made it into the car. As it was she felt flustered as she sat down on the rear seat.
"Still love your adoring public, Miss Hewitt?" the driver asked from the front seat.
"It has it's down side." Hewitt took a deep breath and glanced at the driver. She was female, a minority as drivers went but by no means uncommon. Jennifer could see the back of her dark raven hair showing underneath her cap. Under the dark shades her pale skin was visible. She looked young, perhaps not much older than Jennifer herself.
"So where are we going today?"
"Home....Danni.." she looked at the card in front of her. "Is that your full name?"
"Sure is." she started the car and pulled out, flash bulbs going off outside the vehicle. "I mean it isn't Jennifer Love Hewitt but it does the trick."
Jennifer smiled. "Too many Jennifers?"
"Pardon?"
"There were to many Jennifers. Famous ones. Aniston, Lopez, Paige. I figured why not use my middle name. It separates me from the crowd."
"You mean like that crowd back there?"
"Yeah.. Do you get that often? When picking up stars I mean?"
"Oh I don't do too much celebrity work. I've driven a few. Older ones.
They get less attention. The younger and more beautiful the more magazines they sell."
"Yeah. I've noticed. Sometimes I wish I had a normal life."
"Is this one of those times?"
"I can never really tell."
Jennifer looked out the tinted windows as the city streets rolled by. People never appreciated the simplicity of walking along a street without being hounded. "What about you? Do you ever regret this job?"
Danni laughed at the question. "Well somewhere in between my clinical psychology and advanced electronics I got a part time job as a driver."
Jennifer giggled a little louder than she meant to.
"I guess I sort of got carried away. Still, the pays good. And you get to meet interesting people."
"Famous and interesting are not mutually inclusive."
"No. But they aren't mutually exclusive either... Say.... do I know you from somewhere?"
Jennifer raised an eyebrow. "Are you kidding?"
"No I mean like, before you were famous and all that."
Jennifer scanned her memory. Danni... the name rang a bell somewhere..
"You were in my biology class!" Jennifer latched on to it at last.
"Danni Valantino?"
"Valentine actually. Yeah. I remember it now. You threw up when we were dissecting frogs."
"Oh yeah.. that."
"We called you Spewwit Hewitt."
Jennifer laughed awkwardly. "Yeah. I hated biology."
"It was one of my favourites. Actually they were all favourites. I got scholarships which got me to L.A. Great thing to make of your life huh?"
"Doing this for a living? It isn't too bad. Not if you're happy."
"Which I am. Plenty of zeros on the pay checks. Not as many as your ones though. But I get to escape the limelight."
"You don't know how lucky you are. I can't even have a day at the beach anymore. It's like the instant you become famous your suddenly a hundred times more beautiful than anyone else."
"Ah the vanity of the world. Still, you can't say it isn't a bit of a thrill to have a net site dedicated to your breasts. Or so I've heard."
Jennifer laughed aloud.
"It's true. And it's crazy."
"But you have no choice but to live with it?"
"Exactly."
"Do you remember when we were in P.E class back at school? You got your growth spurt earlier than most of us and you couldn't help but standing out, especially with your.. measurements."
"I guess life now is sort of the same. Only none of the girls wanted pictures. Still there were some good things to come out of P.E."
Danni cast a quick glance back at Jennifers mischievous smile.
"What do you mean?" the driver asked.
"Well.. I remember making out in the showers with a guy once. Can't even remember his name. But he was good."
"In the changing rooms? Well it shows how little school life I was in touch with."
"Well there was plenty of it around. Most of the time I managed to keep it quiet. After all I was a good girl. Not the sort of girl who wants to get caught necking in the science labs on Prom night."
"You were in the labs with your date?"
"I didn't say it was my date."
"I envy your ability to pick people like that."
"Popularity had it's downsides. It's no different now."
"Tinted glass can do wonders." Danni tapped on the glass beside her.
"Still, I guess you could use it to your advantage. It's not like you need a witty pick up line."
"You'd think that but it isn't. I can't even sleep in with a guy for fear of being photographed. There are thousands of guys out there who fantasise about bonking me but I have to deal with the reality of it. What about you?"
"Oh yeah." Danni replied calmly. "I fantasise about bonking you all the time."
The driver maintained a serious expression for less than a second before she collapsed into laughter, taking Jennifer with her.
"No." Hewitt continued, trying to suppress her laughter. "I mean do you get much of a love life."
"I get the chance for one. But that doesn't mean I have one."
"Life can be tough like that."
"I guess there are flings here and there. They can be okay. If you can keep them covered up."
"Such as?"
"Okay.. lets see... I was on holiday.. er .. Florida. Last summer. Yes I know.. last summer and all. I get that every year. Any way. I landed at the airport and managed to get through checkout in disguise, one of the advantages of Hollywood make up. Well there was a car there waiting. Not quite as nice as this one. More discrete I think. Well this guy had a sign with 'Hewitt' written on it. And the driver was so cute. Tall, dark hair and.. well.. he was cute as hell anyway. We hit it off straight away, metaphorically speaking. And when I get to the hotel, he offers to show me around the sights. It's his afternoon off. So I accept. Afternoon becomes evening, evening becomes night and we end up back at his place..."
Jennifer stopped for a second. "I'm not boring you am I?"
"Boredom and jealousy are very different things. Please go on."
"Well I guess that's about it. I mean.. well.. we had sex.. It was great... he took me back to the hotel early morning. No one ever knew. I never heard from him again... I don't think he even told me his name.... Strange.. he was so good looking but I can't even remember his face."
"Memory can be funny like that."
"Anyway. That's my idea of a fling."
"You've got me wrapped now... Look, I don't want to sound voyeuristic but give me the details. What was his house like?"
"No that's fine.. Er.. details.. lets see. It was clean. I mean, really clean, methodically. There wasn't a thing out of place. It's funny you know. It was so great but when I think back it's like a dream. Well there was a Jacuzzi. That was great. I had my bikini with me and we sat there and talked for ages."
"And?"
"And.... what then... er...."
"You got out?"
"Um...no... he did... He was going to get us a drink. So I just lay there waiting for him.. It was so warm.. so warm and relaxing..Just thinking about it makes me feel like melting...."
"Keep going."
"He.. he came back and just started massaging my neck.. my shoulders... it felt so good... And he gave me this drink.. really thick syrupy stuff.. really sweet.. I.. I started feeling light headed.."
"Sleepy?"
"No.. just... fuzzy... and... he pulled me out of the pool... I could hardly move... asked If I was okay..."
"Are you okay?" Danni noted a soft slur forming in Hewitts voice.
The star was reclining on the back seat, losing herself in the dreamy memory.
"Fine.. I'm fine..."
Danni wasn't sure who Jennifer was answering to.
"I couldn't even make out his face anymore... but he took of my bathing suit.. and they.. he carried me into another room. There was. .a.. big.. chair. and she. no.. he.. sat me down. I tried to move but I was so numb.. They had to strap me in to stop me falling.... Then .. he...she.. he..."
"Jennifer? Are you sure you're okay?"
"Yeah.." Jennifer panted, her breath rising and falling faster..." Great.. fine.."
Danni looked down at the phone beside her. But they'd be home soon enough anyway.
"Fine.. and... there were cups... big suckers... on... on my tits... And .. In me.. in me. and my head... This big helmet and..."
Jennifer clenched her fists in the back seat, muscles tensing at the memory, eyes tightly closed. Drips of sweat were falling from her forehead as the memory invaded her mind.
"Then Lights!. so many lights.. and I wanted to stop looking but I couldn't.. And my body felt so good.. So good!... They.. she..fucked me.. over and over.. and the lights and the the sounds were so good.. so nice.. couldn't fight.. couldn't resist.. lights.. pretty lights... so tired.. Then.. I was free, back in the pool.. so warm. .so nice.. And I could see their face.. So beautiful.. And they touched me and it was so good.. better than ever... and they asked me if I loved them."
Danni bit her lip nervously as she stopped the car, having reached their destination.
"And what did you say Jennifer."
"I said.. I said...."
Jennifer opened her eyes at last staring at the driver.
"I love you Danni. I've always loved you. Ever since you hypnotised me in the changing room showers. At the prom... last summer.. every summer... I love you."
"I love you too Love." Danni smiled. "We're here."
She exited the car opening Jennifers door to let the panting star fall into her arms.
Danni would take Jennifer inside, give her old friend her annual booster treatment and then they would do what they did last summer, every summer before that and every summers yet to come....
THE END
