First Reading

By MesmerEyes

Minnie Driver sat relaxing in her office at the Production Company that she ran with her sister. She was busy reflecting on how nice it was to be able to pick and choose the roles that she wished to do and even be able to attract not inconsiderable sums of money for projects she herself considered worthwhile. Hollywood was indeed a strange place and had embraced Minnie, as one of it's own. Apart from an ill advised role in the film Hard Rain Minnie had chosen her projects extremely well and was now in a position of solid financial security. The next project in line was at home in England and then she would take a much-needed break. Minnie leant back in the chair relishing the feel of the soft expensive leather that threatened to engulf her. The telephone broke the silence and Minnie leant forward and switched on the loudspeaker.

"Minnie it's that guy on the phone again, the one with the proposition."

"Put him through Cindy."

"Are you sure, he sounds like a bit of a weirdo to me."

"Hey I'm a grown up Cindy."

"Whatever."

Minnie sat back in the chair and waited for Cindy to put the call through.

"Hello, Miss Driver?"

"Yes Mr Brady, how can I help?"

"Did you get the script I sent you?"

"Mr. Brady how many times do I have to tell you. I'm not interested in developing other people's ideas at the moment. No matter how much merit they have."

"All you have to do is read the script."

"Mr Brady please listen to me. This production company exists only to seek backing for my own personal projects. I am just not interested in your script."

"Look Miss Driver all I am asking for is a script reading, hell if you don't like it just consign it to the waste bin and let me know and I'll stop bothering you and go elsewhere."

"I just have to read it and nothing else."

"That's it. All I need is an honest opinion. I don't need the money just a little constructive criticism."

"Ok I'll do it. Just to get you off my back."

"Thank you. You won't regret this one little bit."

"OK so all I need now is the script."

"It should have arrived by messenger this morning."

"I'll check with my secretary. Oh by the way Mr Brady, don't call us we'll call you." Minnie hung up and relaxed again, knowing that she could ignore the script and wait a few days before calling him up. Spouting some platitudes about how the script needed some work, basically a good story, lacking in character development etc etc. But even as she thought it, Minnie knew that her built in sense of fair play and basic honesty meant that she would read the script and find something nice to say about it. Minnie smiled. "You're a big softie at heart girl."

Minnie buzzed he secretary. "Cindy have we had a script delivered this morning?"

"Yes Minnie it arrived while you were on the phone to the creep."

"Bring it in Cindy. I've agreed to read it for him."

"OK you're the boss."

"Glad you remembered for once Cindy." The door to Minnie's office opened. Cindy walked over to the desk and dropped a brown package on the table.

"There it is Minnie. Hope it's a good read."

"The sooner I finish this the sooner I get him off my back. Have I got much on today?"

Cindy shook her head. "Monday's always a quiet day, everyone's still nursing a hangover from the weekend."

"OK then hold all my calls until I say otherwise."

"Sure thing. Boss."

Cindy giggled as she left the office. Minnie shook her head and smiled. There was no hope of ever turning Cindy into a proper secretary. Minnie sat back in the chair and opened the package. She held the script in her hand and grimaced as she read the title out loud. "The Hypnotised Sex Slave."

Minnie almost threw it in the bin straight away. She knew that anything with such a ridiculous title was going to be really dire. But in the end she just had to see just how bad it really was. It was Minnie's turn to giggle as she prepared herself for the inevitable crap that was about to follow. Minnie began to read first page. Inevitably the dialogue was cheesy and most of the main characters were sketchy to say the least. The one exception was the villain of the piece; all of the writers efforts seemed to have gone into making this one character stand out from the others. He dominated every page and as Minnie read on the other characters seemed to fade even more into the background. Minnie knew a good character when she read one and despite the cheesy nature of the hypnotic control plot she found the main character compelling in a way she could not previously have imagined. The script had descended into no more than an endless monologue and here and there Minnie found herself nodding in agreement at certain things the hypnotist said.

Minnie was oblivious to everything around her; she had become totally engrossed in the world of the Master hypnotist. Minnie could see more and more logic in the premise of the plot and as she read more and more reality began to slip away. Minnie could almost hear his voice now, it seemed familiar, but that was unimportant. The focus of Minnie's mind was becoming narrower and narrower as she became more and more embroiled in the world the writer had created. Suddenly another character emerged as strong and well written as the Master Hypnotist himself. The new character was a young woman much like herself. She was attractive, intelligent and wealthy with a strong personality, very much her own woman. Minnie quickly attached herself to the part. Almost living the script scene by scene as the young woman first met and then gradually became fascinated by the Master Hypnotist. Minnie realised now that this was a love story. A story so beautiful it made her want to cry. Minnie was lost now in the world that she had created from the script she began to feel everything that the girl did and felt herself slip slowly under the influence of her Master. Minnie's heart leapt when the girl finally submitted totally to her new master. Minnie could have imagined no other ending; she had never in her life felt such happiness. As she turned the final page she saw the message *RING ME KNOW* and a phone number.

Minnie picked up her private line and dialled the number. "Hello Minnie. Did you enjoy the script?"

"Yes it was wonderful."

"Do you think it's a part you can play?"

"Oh yes, definitely."

"Good. I think you need to come over for some rehearsals then. Don't you?"

"YES. When can I come over?"

"Now would be a good time Minnie."

George Brady heard the phone go dead and knew that she would get here as soon as she could and he was satisfied that she would be more than ready to co-operate. George had never been a good writer; he'd never needed to be. He'd made a fortune out of designing sophisticated electronics and some of the best ideas he'd developed for himself. Like the wafer thin electronic wafers embedded in each page of that dire script that had flashed a continuous series of powerful subliminal messages directly into her subconscious. Supplementing her own imagination with powerful images that had turned the script into some sort of virtual reality. The subliminal messages had dragged her in to the story and then made her a part of it until it was the only reality that existed and he knew that by the time she had finished reading she was already his.

The doorbell interrupted George's thoughts. He opened the door and smiled at his guest. "Come in Minnie."

Minnie smiled wholeheartedly as she looked at the man stood before her. She understood everything now. This was just how she had imagined him from the script and she new that she would submit to him willingly, glad to be his hypnotised sex slave.

George closed the door and looked at her knowing that with a little more work she would no longer be in the driving seat.

"Maybe we should change your name to Minnie Passenger."

George laughed and Minnie just smiled and waited.

THE END
