Sinterklaas Special 2013

Sinterklaas stories

Here's some background information:

Sinterklaas is a Dutch folkloristic feast to give childeren presents on Saint Nicholas' eve, 5 December. The name of Saint Nicholas is in this sphere usually simplified to 'Sinterklaas' (Father Christmas, also called 'Santaklaus', is based on this tradition). He is assisted by a dark person, Zwarte Piet (Black Pete). Some say he's a Moor. Some say the blackness is from the chimney he travels through delivering the presents. Traditionally Sinterklaas and Zwarte Piet will leave well-behaved children presents, but they will punish those who have been very naughty. For example, they will take bad children and carry these children off in a burlap sack to their homeland of Spain, where, according to legend, Sinterklaas and his helper dwell out of season.
