Chapter 7

29 – The Wreck

Robin knelt as he listened to the testing instructor, Mr. Collins, explain the final test for the Exploration course. This was an important class. Every group had to have two members pass it for them to be able to actually enter the ISTaZ. Because Robin's team only started out with four members only he and Fairfax had taken the course, meaning they both had to pass.

The task Mr. Collins laid out seemed easy enough. He was to climb the hill, look around and find some potentially dangerous area or areas to poke his nose into. In some ways the whole course seemed silly. But as Robin really thought it over, he realized that every team would find things of interest to them and would want to check them out. Doing so safely was of utmost importance in the ISTaZ because medical assistance was further away and rescue attempts were ten times more difficult in the wild areas of Zong.

Robin took a deep breath and asked himself a single question, "OK, this whole mission is just way too easy. What am I missing?" He stayed kneeling as he looked over the land. Everything looked normal and there was nothing to indicate danger. He pulled out his electronic map to overlay his position so he knew exactly where he was. The readings came up and he made his notes for a journal entry, then stopped. The readings were up on the mapping screen, but the terrain didn't match. The hill looked the exact same as what he was looking at, but there was another hill beyond showing on his screen which was supposed to be 30 meters higher. From where he was, the next hill should have been visible. Frowning he played with the small hand held map only to get the same results.

Robin turned and tried for another reading. Again he got an overly, but yet again it wasn't quite correct. The land was close, but there was a ravine off to his left, but it didn't show on the screen. "Close screen." Robin ordered the small hand held map, "Bring up compass readings."

The map faded from the screen replaced by a compass. It pointed his direction as south. Robin looked up noting the afternoon sun was well off to his right side. On Earth, this would be correct, but Zong spun in the opposite direction, meaning not only was the map wrong, so was the electronic compass. He dug into his pack and pulled out a magnetic compass. He didn't know whether to grin or frown as he saw the pointer spin wildly then stop only to spin again a few moments later and stop pointing in a different direction.

Robin looked up at Mr. Collins. "Well I know what I want to find out, but I'm not sure where or even how to begin!"

"OK, talk to me recruit." The man's voice didn't hide his surprise.

"I know you took me airborne and cut all electronics when we were a few kilometers out from here. I assumed it was so I couldn't do any advanced work while we were getting to the testing area. Now I am not so sure."

"Why not?"

"My mapping pad is completely useless here as is the compass function. The old fashioned compass is even worse. I want to find out why. I am also wondering if it effects the electronics on the ship the same way."

Mr. Collins nodded, totally astonished. "I am impressed Robin. I have never seen a kid realize the problem so quickly let alone wonder about why we take kids here without any help from onboard systems. We lost two space lander craft in this area before we realized the self-guidance systems didn't work right in this zone. Both crashed into things the electronic systems didn't see. To this day we have no idea why this happens, but there are five of these zones we know of on the planet."

"I want to know why, but if you can't figure it out, I doubt I will in only a few hours. Instead I will do my best to trace the boarders of the problem and map them in by hand so we don't accidentally get lost."

"Robin, I wish I could tell you to go for it, but the zone is over 30 square Kilometers, there is no way you could map it in the time you have."

Robin frowned in disappointment, "Any chance I can come back here and spend some time poking around?"

Mr. Collins laughed, "Normally I'd say no, but there is a better than even chance you will pass two tests on your first day, so you might have at least one full day free. You pass this test and I'll take you back here personally."

Robin grinned, "I guess I better pass then, huh?"

"You're off to a good start."

Robin looked around then dug back into his pack. "The position of the sun tells me I am facing north. Without the sun, I wouldn't have a clue so I'm going to set up an arrow with rocks just in case the sun gets covered up behind those storm clouds." Robin pointed to a dark bank of low hanging clouds.

Mr. Collins recorded Robin's comments on a digital holovid recorder for review by the student or the other instructors later. He remained silent, but did nod.

Robin moved up the hill keeping a sharp eye out for danger. He still felt this whole thing was way too easy, and it bothered him. These thoughts suddenly vanished as he crested the top of the hill and looked down into the ravine on his right. He stopped and stared at the wreckage of a large space lander. It looked like its wing had hit a large outcropping of rock at a very high speed and sent it spinning into the ravine. Grass and even small trees had grown up and in some cases through parts of the shattered craft, but the passage of time failed to hide the devastation of the crash site. Robin clutched his temples for a moment "Someone died here."

Mr. Collins nodded solemnly, "Yes. Three did."

As Robin continued to hold his temples he felt something. Four had died, he was sure of it. "Only three?"

Mr. Collin frowned, "Yes, a fourth person, the ships medical officer, was never found though."

Robin knew the woman had died as well. As he let go of his temples he realized he knew it had been a woman yet, had not been told. It wasn't a pleasant thought.

Robin gulped, but he had to take a closer look. He located what looked to be an easy and relatively safe path down to the mangled craft. He quickly started down the hill, but after only three steps he stopped short. He smacked his head in combination of fear and disgust at his foolishness as he cried out; "A wreck this bad may have cracked open the magnetic drive cores! What am I doing?"

Robin quickly backed up shaking his head. When he got to level footing away from the ravine he dropped his pack and pulled out a small scanner. He started set the mode for a magnetic scan then looked skyward, "OK, now this is really silly. I already know electronics don't work right in this area and there is obviously a magnetic problem because my regular compass doesn't work right and they all work by magnetic fields. Any reading I get, I won't be able to trust."

Mr. Collins made a couple of notes and started to close the holovid recorder, "Nice work Recruit!"

Robin smiled as he realized he had just passed the test. His smile faded quickly, however. "Sir, I still have over two hours, right?"

"You sure do. Do you want to poke around some more? I feel I better warn you though, if you do explore, there is a chance you could do something wrong or foolish thus forcing me to fail you. Any time you spend out here is testing time."

"Sounds fair to me." Robin agreed but cringed as he realized he was risking a failure. "I'd like to check this out though."

"The crash site?" Mr. Collins looked confused; "You already determined there was no way to verify its safety. A crack in a magnetic drive core could put out enough magnetic force to polarize the iron in your…"

"I know, it could make my blood cells become magnetically charged to the point they wouldn't be able to move around. I would literally die of asphyxiation because my blood couldn't move oxygen through my body. I learned about magnetic drives in school, long before I saw it in the safety manuals we had to read here."

"So what makes you think you can safely go down there?"

"Nothing." Robin paused as he looked at the shredded fuselage. Robin slowly held up a finger as an idea started to form. "Nothing yet. Key word, YET!"

Mr. Collins flipped the recorder back on and repeated what he had witnessed and Robin's desire to continue the test. "OK, I'm going to sit here and watch. I must tell you, your are pushing the envelope of exploration just by staying here and thinking about going down there when you know the danger."

Robin grinned with a huge smile, "Don't worry sir. I'm not going down there until I am sure it is safe. I'm not in any mood to risk my life just because I want to see a wreck up close!"

Mr. Collins sighed, "Good. So what is your plan Robin?"

Robin rubbed his forehead for a moment, "I'm still working on it sir."

"This should prove to be interesting. I have been in the Explorer Corps for over a decade and don't see a way around this."

Robin looked down at the wreck again then sat down. "I need to get a piece of iron down there without me putting it down there."

"Iron. Huh?" Mr. Collins snorted, "first question I have for you is: where are you going to get a chunk of iron?"

Robin started digging though his pack. He suddenly grinned as he looked at his vest. "Isn't the safety hooks on the shoulders made of carbon tempered steel?"

Mr. Collins nodded, "Yes, as a matter of fact they are. They are in case you fall and your team members or a rescue crew needs to pull you up they are quick snap, but your aren't supposed to take them off, ever!"

"I don't need to. I grabbed a couple of extra because they have a little, yet very strong, pulley in them. I figured coupled with rope they might come in handy." Robin held up a pair of the hooks in triumph.

"Nice thought, so now what?"

Robin pulled out his sight scanner. "I set this to optical mode so I will not get any interference from the electronic side of it. I can then see what happens to the hook when it gets close to the crash. If there is a magnetic field down there form a cracked engine shield it will either fly right toward it or bounce away from it."

"Very resourceful!" Mr. Collins was truly impressed, but he saw another problem. Since his student had already passed, he saw no harm in providing a word of caution. "I seriously doubt you can throw such a small object far enough to get a good reaction. You would still have to get too close for safety!"

Robin pulled out his first aid kit and pulled out a long strip of white tape. "I'd never be able to see it either." Robin grabbed a large rock and started taping the steel hook to it. "But with white tape around this rock I should be able to take care of both the problem you saw and the one I saw. I just had to select a larger rock than I had first planned."

Mr. Collins rubbed his jaw in astonishment. The Crops had taught him thousands of tricks but nothing like this. In some ways it was just too damn simple. Only a genius or a kid could come up with such a bizarre solution. Adults were too dependent on technology to solve problems. Yet as he analyzed it, it should work perfectly. The rock was not too large to effect what would happen to the small iron hook if there was a magnetic core breach, but could easily be tossed close enough to see an effect. Of course he already knew the craft was safe. The drive cores had long ago been taken away. But it had been decided they leave the rest as a training tool.

As far as he knew no one ever came up with a way a kid might be able to determine if it was safe and thus explore the crash site. With a degree of admiration the instructor watched the student hurl the rock. When he had been assigned to Zong as an instructor Eugene Collins never dreamed a 12 year old boy would teach him something, let alone give him a whole new way of approaching a wide range of problems. He felt somewhat humbled by the whole turn of events.

Robin jumped up and down in glee showing he was still very much a child. "It didn't move! It is just sitting there! It's safe!"

Eugene snickered, "Nice work. Now what?"

Still excited beyond belief over the fact he had figured out a way to check out the wreckage he stated down the hill again then stopped. 'First I need to calm down so I can focus on what I am doing!"

"Good place to start." Mr. Collins agreed switching back into an instructor mode all the while sharing the boy's exuberance.

Robin slowed and moved down the path carefully. "I don't know if I need to tell you this, but I am going to go down off the path as soon as I get close to the wreckage, I don't want to slip and get a piece of metal stuck into my leg, so I'm risking loose rocks instead. At most I'll skin my knee this way."

"Explanations are not required Robin, but I like it when I hear a cadet talk their way though a test."

Robin finally made it to the bottom of the ravine. He carefully made his way through the wreckage and into the fuselage. He went straight back to the engine compartment. "How come they took the magnetic drives out but left the rest completely intact? There is still lots of equipment and gear in here!"

"We let kids walk right into here and look around. We want them to see everything as it is. We hope they will realize this may not be a salvaged wreck and see their error. Most don't."

Robin smiled, "How could they not?" his smile faded as he once again felt or maybe even saw a brief flash inside his head.

Mr. Collins shrugged, "They don't think I guess." He suddenly smacked the Holovid recorder, "Damn!"

"Problem?" Robin asked then shuttered as yet another flash of revelation came to him. "Three women and one man died here. It is eerie."

Eugene Collins stopped dead in his tracks. He turned from the Holovid recorder which had fallen victim to the weird effects of the area and was now only recording static. "Um, Robin only three bodies were recovered. One was not. Only three were confirmed dead. I didn't tell you there was three women and one man either, how did you know?"

Robin ignored the question as he once again grabbed at his temples. He stepped out of a hole in the fuselage and moved away from the wreck at an angle. Ten minutes later he moved up to a small cave, more of a small hole in the face of the ravine and knelt. He once more gulped and fell backwards as his eyes saw a skeletal hand clutching an auto-medical scanner. "It gave her wrong information like all the other scanners do here! She killed herself on accident!"

Mr. Collins rushed up as he saw Robin fall back. As he grabbed the shaking boy his eyes fell on the same sight. "Oh my god!" As he felt Robin calm some in his arms he allowed himself to take a deep breath, "Robin, how do you now? How did you do that?"

Tears still trickling out of Robin's eyes, the boy shook his head. "I don't know. But I do stuff like this all the time. I can find something my mom lost when I wasn't even home. I know when dad will come home mad, and this time I just felt this was the way she'd gone. It was as if I was trying to find a safe place and moved this way, only it was her!"

"It's OK cadet. Sometimes we all get hit with inspirations. I just wish I had been able to catch all of this on the recorder."

Robin winced. "Our voices will still come out fine. Trust me."

Mr. Collins scrolled back through the static and played it back. Sure enough the recorder had caught every word spoken. He trembled lightly

"Like I said," Robin stood again still shaking and traces of tears still welling up in his eyes "trust me. Those types of feeling are always right with me. Always." A new round of sobs wracked him as he looked back to the skeletal hand clutching the medical scanner; "Can we go back now? I wanna see Jasp… Um Mr. Montgomery."

"You bet." Eugene wrapped his arm around the boy and led him back to the lander. As he led the boy back to the craft he heard Robin's stomach growl. "I saw you eat, you can't possible be hungry again!"

Robin managed a weak grin; "You know those weird feelings I was telling you about?"

"You mean the demonstration of your uncanny intuition?"

Robin swallowed hard but managed to nod, "Uh huh."

"What about them?" Mr. Collins asked curiously.

"Every time I have them I get really hungry afterwards. The longer or more exact they are the hungrier I get."

Eugene paused and dug out a rations pack out of his survival kit, "Well, eat one of these. They were not made with taste buds in mind, but they are filling."

Robin gratefully ripped open the pack and dug in with an enthusiasm showing just how hungry he was.

Mr. Collins laughed and pulled out a second rations pack. "Good heavens boy, be careful you don't accidentally bite off a finger there!"

Robin laughed as he accepted the second meal package. He paused for a moment as he climbed into the lander then looked up at his instructor. "Um sir?"

Eugene looked over to Robin as he strapped himself in, "Yes?"

"Did I pass?"

Mr. Collins patted Robin on the shoulder; "You passed. As a matter of fact you are the first kid out of this training camp to ever get back to back outstanding marks." Eugene engaged the drive systems and took the craft up, "I know what you found shook you up Robin, but there is a family back on Earth who will finally be able to put their daughter to rest because of you. You done real good!"

30 – Masterful Joel and Handyman Ben

After Ben finished eating he looked at his watch and then at Wendy. He said:

"It's been fifteen minutes! Where are they?..

Wendy hemmed and said:

"Oh, that's nothing. We should not wait for them, it could take a while. You see, my brother is… Um… Kind of an expert in this sort of things. He can go on for over forty minutes.

"Wow! Forty minutes?! All of the sudden I wanna join them! How the hell?..

"Well, I don't know. He has a lot of experience I guess.

"He's only nine! Jeez!

"Yeah, well, it doesn't matter. He had a whole group for jerking off, he and like five of his friends. They invented techniques and such. They used to take over our room for like two hours each time, locking the door. I wasn't allowed in, so I had to wait outside… Annoying.

Ben giggled and said:

"Well… Looks like we have some free time on our hands. Let's do something.

"Like what?

Ben thought for a moment, and suddenly his eyes lit up:

"I have an idea!

And he swiftly ran to his corner, and started disassembling his inflatable racks.

***

After an amazing thirty-seven minutes Sammy and Joel came back. Both were looking quite dizzy. Ben and Wendy were in the middle of intensive work. Both raised their heads to look at the boys that came in, and then lowered them again to continue their labor. Only Ben couldn't constrain and asked:

"Well, how was it?

"How was what?" innocently replied Sammy.

"You know what I mean," said Ben with a grin." How was the finish?

Sammy's jaw dropped:

"How did you know?

"How did we know?" jokingly asked Ben, looking at Wendy," You remember, Wend?

"Beats me," wisecracked the girl." I guess we're telepathic.

Joel interfered and told Sammy:

"They probably saw us. Whatever." he turned back to Ben and inquired: "What are you doing anyway?

Ben proudly looked up and said:

"We are building a Raft. To go downstream. We did it last time, remember Sammy?

"Yeah," replied Sammy, still quite embarrassed from being caught. Ben continued:

"Since you were outside pulling your willies we had to stay in here. So I decided to make a raft like we did last time, from the racks and inflatable mattresses. It's almost done, since you guys were going at it for like forty minutes… How the hell did you do that, by the way?.. I bet your dicks are purple by now or something.

Joel proudly hemmed:

"You wish, dude. I have a special technique.

"Yeah, yeah, I heard about that already. Wendy, stretch the duck tape over to the middle, okay?

Joel and Sammy were quickly put to work and in ten minutes it was all done. A large inflatable raft, with a hard bottom and soft sides, was ready to be tested in the lake. The four kids took it by the corners and ran outside, and in a few short moments the raft was floating near the shore of the crystal clear lake.

Chapter 8
Robin's plan

31 – The Plan

Robin felt Mr. Collins gently shake him. Rubbing his eyes he yawned then stretched. As he regained his bearings, he realized they were almost back at the training camp. "Wow, I dozed off didn't I."

Mr. Collins laughed out loud, "More like zonked out young one. You were even snoring!"

Robin felt his face go a little flush. "Sorry sir. I guess all this testing…"

Eugene Collins cut him off, "No need to say anything recruit. You earned the nap. As a matter of fact I went on an extended flight since your testing went so quickly."

Robin yawned again, "How long was I out?"

"About an hour and a half and your are still getting back well before dinner."

Robin took a deep breath, "Good I'm hungry!"

Eugene raised an eyebrow, "You ate a huge lunch, two full ration packs and you are still hungry?

"Yea, actually I am starving!"

With a high degree of sarcasm in his voice Mr. Collins rolled his eyes, "Why don't I just go down there and kill you a buffalo to eat all by yourself!"

Robin giggled, "I guess my teammates better do good in their hunting tests then huh?"

"If everyone on Zong was able to eat like you, we'd need another planet just to keep this one in food stores instead of being able to let Zong feed you all!"

Robin wanted to tell Mr. Collins about how when he had the weird feelings he could also feel himself using up energy inside himself, but he was afraid what the man might think of him. It was bad enough the whole episode at the old crash site had been recorded on audio. All the instructors would hear it. What would they think of him?

His fears rose as the lander came to a smooth stop in the motor pool right next to the instructor barracks area. He gulped as Mr. Montgomery came over and opened the door for him.

Jasper frowned as he saw the look on Robin's face, "Didn't do so well this time around?"

Eugene glanced over, "Quite the opposite. He was incredible! I don't see any way anyone could overrule my outstanding mark! Wait till you see the vid and the audio after the vid went haywire. It will just astonish you!"

Jasper lifted his favorite student out of the lander, "Then why the glum look Robin?"

Robin lowered his eyes; "You're all going to think I'm some sort of mutant."

"What?" Jasper's voice didn't hide his surprise. What was hidden behind the look was the pain of having had the same thoughts throughout his own life. Jasper hid his own problems quickly by reassuring the boy in front of him. "No chance young one! Why on Earth or Zong would you think such a thing?"

Eugene held up the recording unit, "He did some unusual things out there Commander, but I think he is more tired and hungry than anything."

Jasper chewed on his lip for a moment, "Robin, relax. No one is going to think anything bad about you. I'll take a look at the record in private then I will get back with you. No one else will see or hear it, not even the other instructors, OK?"

Robin looked up with a renewed hope in his eyes, "Just you?"

"Mr. Collins," Jasper turned to look at the other instructor, "I assume what happened does not need to be looked at by anyone other than me to verify your grading of Robin?"

Eugene moved over and patted Robin on the shoulder, "No reason what-so-ever, Commander. We do have to report that he figured out a safe way to check out the wreck and found the remains of the missing crewmember during his exploration, but the vid unit was acting up. There is no reason for anyone to know about the audio."

Jasper jerked in astonishment, "He found Major Witman?"

"He sure did. Even figured out that because of the strange effects on scanners and the like the poor woman probably killed herself when the auto-med unit gave her wrong information."

Jasper digested the information quickly, "Let me get this straight, he figured out the area messes up our equipment, explored enough to find someone we couldn't for over ten years, and then put together how she ultimately died?"

"Yes."

"I don't even need to see the record. I second your outstanding mark."

Robin took a deep breath as relief showed on his face, "Thank you Jas… um, thanks Mr. Montgomery."

"You can call me Jasper. You earned it." Mr. Montgomery smiled warmly. "Get with the rest of your team, get cleaned up and get to the mess tent for chow and announcements."

Jasper watched the boy perk up and run off toward the camp area before turning to Eugene, "OK, I want to see and hear what you got out there, but then it gets erased. I will not break my word to him, or any other kid for that mater."

Eugene motioned for Jasper to climb in the lander; "It might be better if you viewed it in a nice private spot then."

Jasper jumped in the lander, "Diner is running late and most of the kids aren't back from testing yet so we have some time. You fly, I'll watch and listen."

Eugene nodded, "Fine by me."

Robin ran all the way back to his campsite only to find he was the only one from his team around. This didn't do much to calm his nerves. He dearly wanted one of his teammates to talk to, wrestle with, or even play a game with. Up till now his weird abilities had been something he had carefully kept hidden. Only his mother and father knew anything about them, and even they didn't know just how weird he was.

Robin had known from about the age of seven there was something weird going on inside him. The first time he could remember the strange feeling was when he was about to get on a shuttle platform for a school fieldtrip. It happened so fast, he didn't even remember reacting, but he had. He stopped and grabbed the girl in front of him and yanked her to the ground then fell on top of her. Before anyone could react the lift short-circuited and sent a powerful burst of electrical current through the entire lift. There was no question the malfunction would have killed both him and the other girl if he hadn't done exactly what he had. Robin touched his temples briefly remembering the now somewhat familiar sensation of tingly numbness and the flash of knowledge, which always came at the same time. Then, not long afterwards, came the desperate need to eat. He kind of smiled as he remembered the teacher's reaction back when he was seven. The teacher figured Robin had seen the beginning of the problem and had reacted to save himself and a classmate. She, along with the paramedics, was only too happy to feed him candy and other snacks. They all thought he was using the food to calm down. Besides, he was the little hero so they all figured he deserved a little extra.

Robin grabbed a packet of apple juice as he sat down and waited. This time had been different from all the others and it really bothered him. Never before had the weird feeling come so many times so quickly, nor had it lasted so long. Never before had he done something so clearly strange in front of another person. He sucked on the packet of apple juice with only one chain of thoughts running through his head; I am a mutant, a weirdo, and now others know it.

His musings were interrupted by the new kid in his small team.

Oliver came over with a huge grin, "Hey Robin, how'd you do?"

Robin exhaled and put on a smile, "Same grade as last test. Looks like you did pretty well."

Oliver's shoulders slumped some; "You got another outstanding mark?"

"Yea." Robin stated then changed the subject, "Come on, what happened with you?"

"I passed." Oliver stated, "But I only got a good mark."

Robin waved off the lack of enthusiasm. "You retook the test so you automatically loose a grade. You would have scored an excellent if it had been your first time. Don't sweat it."

"I know. You can only get an Outstanding on your first try at any test, but you have two of them already!"

Robin smiled, "Well I'm going to tell you what my plans are before the rest even get back, that is if you are interested."

Oliver eagerly nodded, "You bet I am!"

Robin knelt down and started drawing in the loose dirt of the tent floor. "You didn't get a chance to find out much about us before we went to test, but I am sure the others won't mind me giving you some background. Gavin and I are best friends. As a matter of fact Gavin's parents adopted me legally so I could come on AdventureQuest this year. We met Ajax and Fairfax before we left Earth when they helped us with Randy and Jason."

Oliver smiled, "I have heard a little about some kind of fight back on Earth between you guys."

Robin snorted, "Not much of a fight. They picked on a little kid and we chased them into a mud hole."

Oliver openly laughed, "No wonder they are pissed at you!"

Robin couldn't help but grin, "Yea, well they deserved it. Any way, Ajax and Fairfax are both S.L.O.'s."

"S.L.O.'s?" Oliver asked.

"Street Level Orphans." Robin stated with some distaste in his voice.

Oliver's face scrunched up in complete bewilderment, "Sorry Robin, but that may mean a lot to someone from Earth, but to someone from Mars it means nothing. An orphan is someone without family. We have a term called Open Space Orphan, or O.S.O. meaning someone who lost both parents to Open Space Sickness, But S.L.O. does or says nothing to me."

Robin shook his head; "Boy do I feel stupid. I'm sorry. I never even thought about how different life would be for you compared to me."

"Yeah, I bet we will have a few miscommunications before we'll get to know each other's language stuff…" Oliver again grinned.

Robin nodded, "Yea, it's interesting. We both speak English but our lives are so different… I will have to stop taking for granted some of our, what did you call us, Earthers?"

"Yea." Oliver blushed slightly

"Right. I will have to stop assuming you will know all our Earther terms."

"I'm sure I'll make similar mistakes with my Mars lingo before this summer is over. So what is a Street Level Orphan? From the tone of your voice, it sounds bad."

Fairfax walked into the tent, "Sorry to interrupt, but yea, being an SLO sucks."

Robin glanced up with a smile, "Fairfax, how'd you do?"

"They are sending my test for a secondary decision. I either got an Excellent or an Outstanding." Fairfax shook his head, "I can't believe it, absolutely everything you told me was correct. It's like you saw their testing notes or something! The only reason I may not have gotten an outstanding is because I suck at actually hitting a target."

Oliver snorted, "Hey at least you passed and get to carry a plumatic rifle. If my whole team would have stuck it out half of us would have had to go out with stun rifles."

"Might be safer for the rocks and the trees if I did go out with one of those, one way or the other the animals won't have to worry." Fairfax joked, "So what do you want to know about SLO's?"

Robin sighed, "I was about to explain my plan, but I wanted him to understand why I was so dead set on it. I didn't mean to be talking about you behind your back or anything."

"Robin," Fairfax scoffed, "give me a break! I wouldn't have gone there with you. We are buddies and those are too few and far between. I just figured I could explain what being at street level in a CHZ is about far better than you could."

Robin nodded, "No question. All I have to go in is what little I have seen and what is said in the media."

Fairfax rolled his eyes, "Yea, I have heard all those reports, only about half of them hold any truth at all." Fairfax stood up and started to pace, "I don't know what the other Combined Habitat Zones are like on Earth, but the street level in Chi-Troit is a," Fairfax paused then shrugged, "I'd get my butt smacked at the orphanage for saying this but what the hell, Street level life in Chi-Troit like living in a shit hole! Anything below the fifth floor is considered street level officially, but it is more like the tenth floor. The streets at ground level are basically long forgotten. There are ruined cars, massive amounts of trash and even open sewage in some places. The pollution is so bad your lungs burn with each breath because the air is basically blocked by rubble from the old buildings they tore down to build the towers. In some areas the rubble goes up to the eight or ninth floor. There are huge grates in the bottom of many of these rubble pits where the waste from the towers pour out from massive pipes. Many of the trash chutes the people in the towers use all empty down into other pits. When the solid waste pits fill to overflowing automated cargo platforms come in. They have massive cranes that scoop up the trash and then I have no idea what happens to it. Rats run out of the pits in waves when the trash platforms come. Those who are too close can be bitten to death.

Oliver shuttered, "You mean people live down there?"

Fairfax nodded, "Technically it is illegal to live at street level, but some have no choice. My family of six and another family of seven were assigned to a two-bedroom apartment on the 14th floor of a very rundown building because none of our parents had skills. Those who can't even read or write are given very low paying government jobs. The place didn't have water over half the time, there was no air-conditioning, and mom and dad didn't make enough to feed us all so we had to take turns skipping meals. Finally my older brother found a way into the lower levels, The bottom six floors of our building was nothing but equipment to run the building, pipes, control panels, wiring and the like. It took us three days to find a way out, but we did. Once we were at street level we found that there are thousands of others who live between the building scavenging out of the trash pits, covering ourselves from gangs of armed thugs and hiding form the rare patrol in force when the military comes through with hundreds of men. Their primary job seems to be to wipe out the armed gangs; shoot rats and other vermin, and guard building maintenance people who seal up the buildings so the rats don't get in. But they also round up any innocent people they find and send them to processing stations for assignment to quarters, schools, and government assigned jobs with tiny wages.

If they find a kid, they declare them SLO. They don't care if you already had a name and a government number. They don't look for other family members, they don't do much of anything other than assign us to orphanages with an SLO label in our number."

Robin realized he had been holding his breath during must of Fairfax's speech. He took a few deep breaths while forcing his fists open. "Where did you get food and clothing?"

Ajax, who had been standing at the tent flap wiped away a couple of tears, "We ate rats cooked of fires made from trash. We dug clothing others had tossed out into the trash then found a way into a lower section of a building so we could wash them, ourselves, and get water. We always had to be on the move, because if you stay too long in the same place the gangs would find you. They would then beat or even kill anyone who resisted and make the others dig in the middle of the trash piles for them."

Fairfax shook for a moment, "The middle of the trash piles were where all the good stuff could be found because the edges always got picked over, but the rats tend to go after out into the deeper parts of the pits. I have seen gangs laugh as someone they sent to get them stuff gets eaten alive. Gangs run Street level life in Chi-Troit. There are some buildings left at street level, but they are all controlled by the gangs and some gangs are so well armed the military's patrols in force wont even take them on unless the gangs attack first."

Oliver looked sick as he held his stomach. "But the news says…"

Ajax shook his head, "Yea, the news says the trash problems in the CHZ's are getting better all the time and there are plenty of places to live along with all sorts of good jobs. All of it is lies. All of it! I watched my sister get killed in a stampede of rats when one of the cargo trash haulers picked up a load of trash. She slipped and fell in the muck and a wave of rats washed over her. They say those found are taken care of, but I'll tell you I am never going back to that damned orphanage!"

Robin held up his hands, "I have no intention letting either you or Fairfax going back, but I also want to keep us all together."

Fairfax stopped pacing, "How?"

Robin turned to Ajax; "Did you pass?"

"Barely, but I did. I got the bottom mark of passing."

Robin managed to smile, "Fantastic! Two up two down for both of us! Now if Gavin passed we can set my idea in motion."

Gavin entered the tent looking like he had been put through a wringer; "I just caught the end of your conversation. I made it by the skin on my teeth, but I passed! So what's the plan Robin?"

"Awesome." Robin stated as he pumped his fist. He looked around with a smile, "We will start work on this after dinner, but here is basics. I want all of us to get an Outstanding mark in at least one test. That way we can all go to the academy together."

Ajax looked shocked, "How in the world are you going to get us all an Outstanding mark?"

Robin grinned, "Those of us who get an Outstanding will back off on our studies and help the rest. We let each other know what we saw in our own tests, we will work up a list of things to expect, and we will test each other before we go out and take our tests. Tonight Ajax and I will work with the rest of you because neither of us have to take a test at all tomorrow. We will help to pass the tests you already failed. This will give us from noon on tomorrow to get ready to get an outstanding mark on a test. As we each get one, we will spend more time helping the others. You will all have four chances left so we have got to work hard and really push each other. Are we all in agreement?"

One by one the other boys nodded.

As the boys talked in their tent Jasper watched and listened to Robin's test with growing excitement. There was no doubt in his mind he had found someone who could contribute for the cause. He waited until he was alone before pulling out his communicator. Walking well out into an open field he changed the frequency, "Echo one, this is Tango four, respond on encrypted setting seven."

He quickly punched in a new code and once again changed the frequency.

Seconds later a female voice came over his communicator, "Jasper, you're taking a hell of a risk sending up a signal from your area. What is it?"

"I found another one of us." Jasper responded, "He may be exactly what we have been searching for!"

"Are you sure?"

"I am positive, the kid has scored two outstanding marks and has already helped one of his team members to get an outstanding grade, but moreover" I have it on tape how he used the Gift. He even had some control over it."

The woman's voice didn't hide her excitement, "That's great! Are you sure it's that form of the gift that we are searching for though?"

Jasper raised his voice, "How many times do I have to tell you, yes! I have it on tape! I'm pretty sure he used his Gift on both tests, but there is no question he did on the one this afternoon. By the way, how are things going with you and Adam?"

"I think I found two more. Anyway, they saw the projections so they must have it. And Adam… I think he is close to bringing… you know who."

"Yeah… He's probably preparing to meet him…"

"Like his life depends on it. Okay, enough, they can detect our frequency. Prepare what you need about your kid, and keep me posted Jasper."

"You can count on it. Jasper out."

32 – Old Enemies

Nate and Tommy were within about fifteen miles of the lake, as they were walking upstream.

They had at least three more good hours of hiking left in them for that day but the water just looked too inviting. The temperature in their zone had reached 86 degrees and the boys were no longer in such a great hurry to reach the lake.

They stopped at a point along the creek where the water seemed to take a break from its turbulent journey to the lake and had formed a small pool, which was just large enough for them to sit and cool off for a while. Nate stopped and dropped his backpack and began to undress. As usual, Nate's pecker was at full mast before he even got his pants off. This was becoming an expected and accepted part of life here on Zong. Naked Nate + Tommy = instant erection. Tommy never teased him or even said anything about the persistent erection… until now.

As Tommy undressed, his eyes were fixed on Nate's rigid appendage. "Whatever you've got," Tommy said, "it's catching."

Nate didn't understand what Tommy meant and was about to ask when he looked down and noticed that he was not the only one sporting wood this time. Before Nate's stunned mind could conjure up any words, Tommy's hand reached out and gave Nate's penis three quick tugs. Tommy turned and ran into the creek, splashing and yelling "Pecker tag! You're it!"

Nate stood there for a moment, both light-headed and excited. He'd never played pecker tag before but he had a good idea that it was a game he was going to like. He ran into the creek and joined Tommy. The water was cool and invigorating, seeming to re-energize his entire body… well, the parts that needed it anyway.

"You're it!" Tommy shouted again, ready to dodge Nate. But Nate was quicker than he looked and before Tommy had a chance to get away, Nate had a handful of boyhood. Tommy didn't resist. Nate stood there in the water holding Tommy's erection, his heart racing. This was a scenario that Nate had similarly played out in his daydreams, but now he seemed frozen with anxiety.

Tommy could sense Nate's anxiety and took the lead. He reached out and took Nate's penis into his hand and began to stroke him. After a moment's hesitation Nate did the same. He looked down at their prepubescent bodies. Under the water their legs looked short and squatty and their penises looked comically elongated. That odd optical illusion would stay fresh in Nate's memory for the rest of his life.

Tommy put his free arm around Nate's shoulder and smiled at him, a warm, understanding smile. He knew all along that Nate was falling for him. There were certain signs, like the eternal hard on. But it scared Tommy a little. In his young life he had never experienced innocent love or even infatuation. Sex for him had been part job, part comfort, but never love. He was having those feelings for Nate too and it felt different than anything he had ever felt. Whenever he noticed Nate looking at him he always felt a warm flush all over his body. When he looked at Nate he felt both sadness and elation. Sadness in knowing how lonely and ostracized Nate was, and elation knowing that he was becoming a major part in Nate's life.

Tommy placed his hand behind Nate's head and gently pulled him close and kissed him lightly on the lips. Nate returned the kiss. At that moment both boys wished that they could stay on Zong together forever. That is, until they heard heavy footsteps and a frightening, familiar voice.

***

"Holy shit!" The voice cut through the air like a bolt of lightening, leaving a gash of electrified air in it's wake.

Nate and Tommy both turned toward the voice to see Ox and his buddies coming over the crest of the bank.

Ox pointed at Nate, his face filled with recognition. "It's him!" He hollered to Nate as much as to his followers. "I told you he was a faggot!"

Nate's heart sank as Ox and Brandon walked up to the edge of the creek. Hank and Taylor, the younger boys, remained at the top of the bank looking unsure of themselves. Nate and Tommy pulled away from each other and faced the intruders.

Nate was petrified. Out here there was no one to stop things should they get out of hand, which they were sure to do. Ox was crazy and mean. Tommy on the other hand was angry. It was rare in his miserable life to feel pretty good. And he was feeling damn good in fact. Now these clowns had to show up and ruin it. It was like nothing good in his life was allowed to happen. Somebody always had to barge in and carry him back to his normal state of misery. Well, it wasn't going to happen this time!

"What do YOU want?" Tommy asked directly to Ox.

Ox looked at Brandon and said, "Can you believe this?" Brandon shook his head as if to say, gee, some people. "I'll tell you what I want, I want to kick your little boyfriend's ass."

Tommy never looked away from Ox, his eyes remained locked on. He wasn't about to back down. "Well that's just too bad, fatty. You're going to have to find somebody else to bully around."

Ox couldn't believe what he had just heard. He chuckled then grimaced as if he had just bitten down on a piece of spoiled meat. "What? What did you just call me?" He looked around at Brandon and the boys. "Did I just hear what I thought I heard?"

Hank and Taylor looked down at their shoes, feeling sorry for what was about to happen to the boys in the creek. Brandon continued shaking his head.

Ox looked at Tommy, his tone more serious. "Get out of the water, queer boy.

Nate, near panic said quietly, "No, Tommy! He's crazy."

Tommy said, "Don't worry. I know how to handle him."

Nate said at the brink of tears, "He'll kill you. Please don't piss him off any more!"

Ox said, "Don't make me come in there after you, sissy. I'll have to hurt you worse."

Tommy wouldn't hear of it. "If you want me you'll have to come and get me, you fat asshole!"

Ox's face went from calm to murderous in a hideous flash. "You're dead!" He yelled and ran into the creek.

Much like Nate did in the shower back in training, Tommy dodged Ox and Ox splashed down in the water, only Tommy shoved him in the back as he went down. When Ox got back up and faced Tommy his face was blank. There was no humor on it; it was time for serious business.

Ox lunged at Tommy and his right fist connected with Tommy's face hard. Before Tommy could recover from the punch Ox was on him. Ox placed his meaty hands on either side of Tommy's head and plunged him into the water. Tommy struggled to pull Ox's hands away but Ox was much too strong. Realizing that Ox was trying to drown Tommy, Nate jumped on Ox's back trying to get him to free him. Ox was incredibly strong and seemed impervious to pain. Nate beat the back of Ox's head with a fury of punches and Ox continued to hold Tommy under the water. Nate reached around and forced his fingers into Ox's eye sockets. Ox let out a primordial yell, but didn't let go of Tommy.

Nate looked into the water and saw Tommy's face distorted by the refraction of the water, his eyes were rolled up into their sockets. Nate's dream of Tommy drowning in the creek recurred to him. In the dream something was pulling Tommy down, enveloping him, and Nate realized that it was Ox all along. He should have known all along that it would end up being Ox. It was a warning. Now he was seeing Tommy succumb to the water for real. That thought made him fight even harder. Nate began kneeing Ox's back as hard as he could.

By this time, Brandon had joined them in the creek. Nate was grateful to see that Brandon was also trying to pull Ox off Tommy. "Come on, Ox!" Brandon was pleading. "You're killing him! We don't need this!"

Finally Ox let go, only Tommy didn't come up. A burst of bubbles came from between his lips and he sunk to the bottom of the creek, his eyes half lidded.

At this point Nate had nearly lost his mind. He swung wildly at Ox, all arms and fists, missing mostly. Ox turned to Nate and grasped his head like he did Tommy and down Nate went. By this time Brandon was in his own world of shock. He took one look at Tommy lying lifelessly on the creek bed, then turned away and vomited.

Nate struggled against Ox but it was no use. He could see Ox's angry, distorted face through the water. He could also see the sun and trees along the bank. He knew he was done for. Tommy was gone. He was on his way. Ox had won.

Brandon fell limply into the water, dizzy from the vomiting and the overwhelming rush of panic and fear. He looked up to the top of the bank and Hank and Taylor were gone… so were their bags. They had run, fleeing the murderous Ox. He thought for a moment about following them, running away from Ox and this horrible scene. He knew that Ox was doing Nate like he has just done Tommy. He turned to see in a daze. What he saw shocked him badly. His eyes rolled to the back of his head, much as Tommy's had done, and he fell limply onto the edge of the creek, passed out.

What Brandon saw was a hand coming out of the water, Tommy's hand… his dead hand! In it was a large rock dripping with creek water. Suddenly the hand flung the rock down on the back of Ox's head, making a sick, dull thud sound. It sounded like slapping a ripe watermelon. Ox slumped over Nate. Trapping him under the water.

Tommy stood up out of the water gasping for breath. He knew that he hit the target perfectly, falling the lunatic giant. Seeing that Nate was trapped under Ox, got Tommy going again. He grabbed Ox by the wrist and pulled him off Nate. Nate came up slowly, taking in a huge gasp of air as he reached the surface. He opened his eyes and saw Tommy standing in the creek, alive!

Nate lunged to Tommy and threw his arms around him, nearly knocking both back into the water, and hugged him with whatever strength he had left.

"Oh shit!"

It appeared that Brandon had come around. Tommy let go of Nate and stood ready for round two. "Let's get him out of the water!"

Nate and Tommy turned around and saw Ox laying face first in the water. Brandon waded into the water and began hauling Ox up. Nate and Tommy joined him. They got him up to the bank and dropped him. Brandon checked to see if he was breathing and amazingly he was. But he was hurt badly. Tommy had done a thorough job with the rock.

"What do we do now?" Tommy asked Nate.

"We get the hell out of here" Nate said. "This guy can get him medical help." Nate looked at Brandon.

Brandon looked down at Ox. He was afraid of him, more than he had ever been. But he knew that he couldn't leave Ox here like this. "OK" he said. "Get going. If he wakes up we get to start all over again. You won't want to be here for that."

"What's your name?" Tommy asked.

"Brandon"

"I'm Tommy, this is Nate. Where did those other kids go?"

Brandon looked up the bank. "They ran away. I can't blame them."

Nate feared for those little boys. "When you get help", he told Brandon. "Turn him in."

Brandon nodded. He understood. Raiding camps and beating kids up was one thing, attempted murder was another. It was over for Ox.

"What are you going to do after you get Ox taken care of?" Tommy asked.

"Go home." Brandon said. "I'm through with Zong."

Nate and Tommy Wished Brandon well, gathered up their packs and headed back toward the lake, glad to leave behind that whole mess.

***

With Ox and the whole messy incident miles behind them, Nate and Tommy began to relax. They even laughed about it.

"What are you, a fish?" Nate asked, remembering not only how long he had stayed under the water during the fight but also the time Tommy scared him trying to catch a fish.

"Yeah", Tommy said. "A rock fish!"

Both boys busted up laughing.

On a more somber note, Nate said, "I wonder where those little kids went, the ones who showed up with Ox and Brandon."

"Probably to the nearest medical station to get shots." Tommy said." Ox may be contagious."

Again, the boys cracked up.

The landscape began to change. The trees were becoming sparse and the creek was wider. Nate knew they were getting close to the lake. The boys stopped for a break at about 3:00 PM, judging by the position of the sun. They dropped their packs and sat at the creek bank. At this point the creek was furiously fast, the water rustling over a few very small waterfalls " about fifteen inches high " that followed each other in a distance of about thirty feet. It looked like they were long watery steps in the stream. The boys were quietly standing there, looking at the rustling water.

"Before Ox came along…" Nate started.

"I know." Tommy interrupted. "I was ready. I've been ready. I knew you wanted to but I was afraid to say anything."

Nate looked at Tommy, amazed. He was about to say the exact same thing.

They sat silent for a good five minutes. Then Nate gave Tommy a sly look and said, "Peter tag. You're it."

Tommy raised his eyebrows. "I thought YOU were it."

"We were tied!" Nate said. Then he went into a little act. "Oh, Oh! That feels SO GOOD!" Nate thrust his hips forward and said comically, "Do it! DO IT!"

Tommy laughed at Nate's exaggerated replay. Then he jumped up and started undressing. "I'll 'do it' all right." Tommy said laughing. "Let's go!"

Nate didn't argue. He got up and undressed as quickly as humanly possible. Both boys were eager to go back to where they were before Ox entered the picture, to somehow erase the entire bad scene.

The boys jumped into the water, being careful so that both were in the middle of the bottom step, and resumed their original position facing each other, fondling each other… kissing each other. Ox was totally forgotten. The cool water was feeling warmer as the intensity of the moment heated up. Nate and Tommy were finally allowed their moment and it was incredible. Nate could hear Tommy shouting out his pleasure somewhere in the background of his own intense pleasure. The funny thing was that they were kissing… so how could he be shouting?

Just then, Tommy shoved Nate away and faced upstream. A look of panic filled his eyes. Nate followed Tommy's eyes and saw a makeshift raft full of naked kids, coming straight at them and moving fast.

33 – New Friends

All of their clothes the kids left in the cave. Why suffer? There is probably no-one around for miles. And now, taking joy from the tenderly-warm sun, the four naked kids were happily screaming as they were rapidly floating downstream on their self-built raft. The surface of the raft was soft and also warm, and pretty soon all four stretched out on it, quiet, letting their bodies absorb every ounce of sunlight they could get.

The stream started in the bushes of the lake, and went downhill, softly turning to the left and thus taking the kids away from their cave. There was a crystal-clear silence around; the only audible sounds were the tweeting of the birds and the soft relaxing rustling of the pure water. It was idyllic. The four quiet kids each thought that they need nothing else – just to lay here like that, listening to the relaxing stream, their bodies caressed by the soft sun.

Even Ben allowed himself to relax completely, and forgot altogether that the raft needs steering. The four youngsters got a hell of a wakeup call in the form of a cold bath when the raft bumped into a rock and one of it's corners went underwater for a brief moment.

Everyone jumped up, spitting and shaking their heads.

Ben took the long branch he used for propulsion and steering, and soon the raft was back on it's steady course downstream. But nobody wanted to just lay there anymore. Woken up from their magical daydreaming, the kids were now filled with energy. Joel asked:

"Isn't there a way to make this thing go any faster?"

"I'll try," replied Ben, and put more effort on the stick. It didn't make much difference. Joel refused to give up:

"Come on guys, let's help it!"

And he, setting an example to the others, lay on his stomach near the edge of the raft and started to flap his hands in the water in a propeller motion. Wendy and Sammy with happy laughter each picked a spot and followed Joel's example. Ben commented:

"You know that you're slowing the raft instead of making it go faster, right?.."

Wendy turned her cheerful face to Ben's and replied:

"Yeah, probably, but it's fun."

What right is right. Ben dropped the stick and very soon one more kid was flapping his palms in the chilly water of the stream.

Soon, though, everyone got tired of that and Joel once again started thinking of ways to make the raft go faster:

"Maybe if we all got sticks…"

Ben said:

"Relax, Racer Joe. Soon we'll reach the steps, then we'll go faster than you'll want."

"There is no such thing as 'faster than I want'", commented Joel, and then asked: "What are 'steps'?"

Ben smiled. All the kids looked forward. The stream was talking a sharp curve just up ahead.

Ben and Sammy knew the stream well. They took this trip many times last year, with Kyle and Jook. They knew that behind that curve are a series of rocky passes that they called "steps." When the raft goes through those "steps", it bounced up and down rocking the kids inside it, and accelerated ten fold in the fast stream. Then, there is another sharp turn and another series of "steps." It's something like a roller-coaster ride, but you have to be very alert: after the initial series of steps the raft must be turned fast enough to continue downstream, to the second group of passes. Otherwise, it would crash into the shore at full speed. Both Ben and Sammy remembered how painful it was when they descended here for the first time, and not knowing of the curve, crashed into it. Kyle was laughing, Jook was shaking his head, Ben and Sammy were screaming… Diverse moment.

Ben picked up the second stick that he thoughtfully put into the raft before departure and handed it to Sammy.

While the raft was slowly turning the curve, Joel and Wendy moved to the front. After the curve the stream suddenly became visibly shallower, and the raft immediately began to pick up speed. Up ahead was visible a white cloud of water particles, that were hitting something and making a rather loud noise. Joel exclaimed:

"Wow!"

Wendy looked at Ben again and asked:

"Are you sure you know what you're doing?.."

Ben nodded. It was enough for Wendy. Soon, they were close enough to the first set of "steps" to start the decent. By now the raft was going quite a bit faster, and all four kids released an instinctive scream as they went over the first tiny waterfall, felt the raft jump, hang in the air for a second and then splash down to the next step, covering the kids with a healthy doze of sprinkles. The sound of the raging water covered up the excited screams as the raft was already jumping the next step.

Splash! As always, Ben felt his tummy tingle as the raft jumped into the air to land back into the water a second later. And now once again… Aaaaahhhhh… Splash! And again… Whoosh! Suddenly, a sharp curve to the right became visible.

Ben and Sammy both simultaneously stuck their sticks to the left of the raft. It turned sharply, and was now flying diagonally towards the grassy shore. The two boys with one more effort turned the raft completely, and it immediately entered the second set of steps: the bigger one. Once again everyone felt a funny sensation in their Tummies as the speeding raft jumped from the first step and landed on the second one. All were happily screaming. Once more… Wham! And again… Bam! Here comes another one… Splat!..

Ben was having fun, but at the same time he and Sammy were restlessly looking forward, to keep the others safe. And they saw the danger first, both at the same moment.

Screaming, their eyes widening, the two boys lifted their sticks and slammed them into the left side. The raft shook, but turned only slightly. Joel and Wendy at that moment also looked forward and their eyes widened, as they saw two naked boys standing right in the middle of the stream, looking in horror at the large speeding raft that was on it's way to hit them.

All six kids screamed simultaneously. Ben and Sammy, finally regaining their composure, once again stuck the sticks into the stream bottom and pushed the raft to the right with all their might. The sticks remained stuck in the sand in the middle of the stream and the raft, sharply turning, hit the shore and bounced back, dropping the four kids into the water.

All four surfaced immediately, looking at the couple of amazed boys. The boys were also looking at them with awe, realizing that they just escaped a very painful encounter. Then, noticing the girl, the two boys blushed and slipped into the water to hide their nakedness.

After a brief silence Joel started:

"Goddamn! What the hell was that?! I thought…" – looking at the two boys he suddenly stopped in mid sentence, and remained quiet.

Ben, rubbing his sore elbow and knee, climbed out of the water, and helped Sammy – who was rubbing a bruise on his head – to do the same. Wendy and Joel followed their lead, Joel for some strange reason keeping quiet and trying to hide behind his sister.

"Are everyone all right?" asked Ben with concern.

Wendy nodded; Sammy stretched his arms sideways and shrugged. Joel remained quiet, still hiding behind Wendy. Ben looked at the two awkward boys, still hiding under the water. They looked as if they were unsure of what to expect: would the kids that almost collided with them blame them for their crash? Would they be nasty to them? Ben asked loudly:

"Are you guys okay?.. Did you get hit?.."

One of the boys – a blonde haired good-looking kid that seemed to be slightly braver than his companion – replied:

"We're fine… Are you guys okay?"

"Seems like it. A few bruises, that's all. I'm Ben. What's your name?"

"I'm Tommy… And this is Nate." The blond kid slightly nudged his dark-haired companion with his elbow. That one hurried to add:

"I'm Nate…"

Ben smiled and cheerfully asked:

"What were you guys doing in the middle of the stream?.."

Tommy also smiled:

"What did it look like?.. We were…" – he suddenly stopped, looking at his friend Nate, and then continued: "Ummm… Swimming."

"Gee, swimming," – giggled Ben. "I can see that. Well, don't just stand there! Get out of the water, let's talk. Did you guys settle around here?.. Geez, come on, don't be shy, we're all naked!"

Tommy decisively stepped out of the water, calmly saying – as if stating the obvious:

"I'm not shy. Nate, come on."

Nate was still a little unsure, and turned slightly red as he looked at the four boys and one girl who were standing naked on the grass, all looking at him. It seemed that he fought a short battle with himself there, and was victorious. Quickly jumping up he also got out of the water, still a little red but much more optimistic.

Ben extended his hand to his new acquaintance and said:

"Nice to meet you, Nate."

Nate shook Ben's hand, Then Tommy. Ben smiled again:

"Anyway, as you already know I'm Ben. This is Sammy, Wendy and Joel. So, did you guys settle around here?"

Tommy replied, looking into Ben's eyes:

"Well, actually… We didn't really settle anywhere yet. We… just kind'a stopped here for a little while."

Ben and Tommy were now looking into each other's pupils. And Ben felt… It's hard to describe the feeling, but it was kind'a the same as when he met Wendy and Joel. It was a generally good feeling, when you know that you have found someone that you'll like, someone you're not afraid to share anything with. Ben felt that these two boys would become friends, both with him and with the rest of his gang. So he continued without hesitation:

"You know, our cave is roomy enough for two more. Wanna come over for a visit?.."

Tommy and Nate looked at each other, then back at Ben. Nate asked:

"Where do you live… oh, wait, I mean: where did you stay… camp… whatever! Where is your cave?"

Ben snickered and replied:

"It's up the stream, a couple of miles… At the lake."

"Really?" Tommy smiled wider. "We were heading for that lake…"

Ben's eyes widened:

"Cool! We've… well, some of us anyway, we're camping at that lake for a few years in a row already! We also started our raft from there… Wait a minute… The raft!"

All six kids instantly turned around and gazed at the furious stream. Of course, the raft was long since gone; there was no sight of it anywhere. Only those two ill-starred sticks were still standing upright in the middle of the river. Ben said, a little sadly:

"Washed away…" then he added, trying to hide the sneaking laughter a voice of a lost-little-boy-in-the-supermarket: "Ain't that sad…"

Everyone smiled, then snickered, then burst into laughter. Sammy commended:

"Ah well, at least we don't have to carry it all the way back to the cave now."

"The kid's got a point," said Wendy and touched Ben's shoulder: "Let's go?"

"Yeah," replied the boy and turned to Nate and Tommy: "Let's move out. Are you guys coming?"

The two boys once again looked in each other's faces and said in unison:

"Yeah."

"Cool," said Ben and started walking to the bushes that were around the "steps" in the stream…

***

The kids were walking up the stream and happily chatting. Only Joel seemed to drag behind, still trying to hide behind Wendy. Ben finally got tired of it and, leaving Tommy and Nate to talk to Sammy, he walked up to the younger boy and asked:

"Joel, what the hell is wrong with you, dude? Usually you're the loudest, and now… What happened?"

Joel replied, angrily whispering:

"Why did you have to go and invite them over?!"

Ben was surprised, as well as disappointed:

"Why not? Don't they seem like good kids to you?.."

"Maybe! But you don't understand! One of them is the kid…"

"What 'the kid'?" – didn't understand Ben.

"The kid at the airport!! The one that I kicked…"

Ben stopped dead in his tracks, his eyes widening. Everyone stopped as well, looking at him with a question. Ben looked at Nate and then at Joel. Then back at Nate, and then at Joel again. And burst into uncontrollable laughter…

Wendy and Sammy hardly managed to find out what happened from the wildly laughing Ben, but when they did they also started giggling uncontrollably, looking at the blushing grungy Joel and at the surprised and confused Nate. Both Nate and Tommy did not understand what was going on, and figured that it must be an inside joke. Finally, Ben was able to stop laughing. He looked at Joel with mock seriousness and said in the tone of a disappointed teacher:

"Well, young man, you know what you have to do. Go over and apologize."

Joel, with his head lowered and his ears slightly red, approached Nate. That one still didn't understand anything. Joel squeezed out:

"I'm sorry… That I kicked you."

Nate was completely lost. What was he talking about?.. But then, suddenly, he remembered: the airport, the passage way, the robot… The little tard! He looked down at Joel, who was still standing there with his eyes lowered, looking at his own bare feet. Then Nate's mouth also stretched into a wide smile, and he also burst into laughter, causing everyone else – besides Joel and Tommy – to plunge right back into wild giggles. Laughter was like steam, boiling and boiling inside, and now it busted the cover of the boiler and was exploding. Finally, Joel let go of his grunginess and joined the cheerful chorus. Only Tommy was still standing there, looking at everyone and smiling, somewhat confused: the inside joke was turning out to include his best friend, who he thought had never met those kids before!

Finally, when everyone calmed down, the issue was explained to him. Tommy said:

"Talk about a weird co-incidence!"

Ben responded:

"Tell me about it! I was just thinking the same thing!.."

The six kids continued their journey that now seemed much more cheerful. Joel was Joel again, and everything seemed to be just the way it was supposed to.

34 – Walking away

James was both confused and intrigued. His encounter with Taryn ended uncertainly: the huge Rabbit told him a lot of confusing things and then it just disappeared into the thin air, together with the house, the teapot and the tea. It told him that he is one of "the chosen ones", but did not tell what are the chosen ones what the hell they are chosen for. It told him about how James must train to learn to control his energies, yet James never knew he had any energies and had no idea how to use them. It told him he is in a war against evil, but there was not one word spoken about what this evil is… And then it disappeared. Altogether. Completely. Even the warmth from the tea in James' stomach disappeared, as if he drank nothing at all.

The boy was promptly walking, trying to understand if he still has his sanity. Taryn said that James would see him again, when he is ready. James was unsure he wants to meet the giant rabbit again. At least until that one proves that he really exists and is not just a figment of James' imagination.

James was walking fast. He already crossed a large chunk of the jungle, bypassing a huge Trinlian plant. Then he headed down following what seemed to be a recently created cutout path. It was already getting close to the evening and the sun was slowly beginning to go down.

Finally, the path brought him to a lake. The lake was quite large. He walked around it to see a soft light coming from the bushes, along with muffled children's voices. James slowly and quietly crept towards the light until he reached the opening of a cave. The voices came from inside. He heard a loud and cheerful boyish voice repeatively say "come on, tell me how you got 'em!", and a quiet voice mumble something unclear in response to that . Then he heard a third voice of another boy say: "Okay, enough arguing already, I wanna start reading!"… "Okay", replied a softer voice, "let's sit in a circle." James crept closer as he heard some rustling, then quiet. And then the soft boyish voice started equally telling a story. It seemed like a logical continuation of the magical events that happened to him lately. And James just sat there, a quiet uninvited and unknown of guest, listening, growing more and more excited as the story progressed…

35 – Spots of Sunburst

When the six kids reached the lake, the sun was already beginning to set. A mysterious shade of violet colored everything " a combined light from the setting yellow sun and the blue moon that was already in the sky since the afternoon, but only now became visible.

During the walk Ben's little group and their two newfound friends had a chance to get to know each other through and through. Ben, Sammy, Wendy and Joel found out how Nate and Tommy met, their previous encounters with Ox and their adventures on Zong up until now. The two newcomers, respectively, learned about how Ben's little group formed.

Joel was most interested in the Ox story. He asked Tommy to tell it again and again, savoring every little detail. After Tommy told him the story for the third time, Joel said:

"I just don't understand what's wrong with him. What, did he see you swimming and then decided he wants to kill you two of the sudden?.."

Tommy said without pausing:

"Well, not just all of the sudden. He wanted to beat us up, and since we resisted… he got crazy."

"Yeah, but why did he want to beat you up?"

"Well, we weren't exactly swimming, we…" – Tommy ended the sentence abruptly seeing the way Nate was looking at him.

It seemed that Joel understood what Tommy meant to say. And so did the others. And an awkward silence appeared between the kids for a few moments. To take away the awkwardness Ben cheerfully said:

"Yeah. I get it. You were doing what Joel and Sammy were doing just this afternoon when Wendy and me walked in on them."

Sammy blushed, Tommy giggled and Joel tried to kick Ben but missed. Nate breathed out in relief and also smiled.

When the kids settled into the cave Ben went to his corner and extracted a rather large rectangular object from his backpack. Everyone wanted to hold the journal before Ben would start reading. Each kid ruffled through the pages, looking at the blue-ink handwritten text. There seemed to be something special about this object, everyone could feel it. It's like… the spirit of the writer was somehow transferred through a little bit. Ben secured a NeoLight right over their heads and took the journal, but Joel protested:

"No, the stupid light is messing up the atmosphere! It's too bright like that."

"Do you have any other suggestions, Joel?.." sarcastically inquired Ben. "I need to see the book, you know."

Sammy suddenly threw up his eyes:

"You know, you can use the pins."

Ben thought for a moment and then unsurely asked:

"You think that they'll provide enough light?.."

"If you backlight 'em with a Neolight, they definitely will," stated Sammy.

"Okay, I'll try it."

Ben went to his corner again and returned with a small box. Then he placed the NeoLight on the wall about ten feet away and opened the box. Four sighs of amazement were instantly heard, as the kids saw two quartz starburst insignias shining brightly from inside. Joel, as usual, was the first to say:

"Wow!"

Tommy added to that remark:

"Those are sunburst pins! They're only worn by the explorer corps!"

Ben shrugged his shoulders. Joel asked:

"How the hell did you get them?"

Ben shrugged again. He didn't like telling that story, because it always seemed like he was bragging. Sammy answered for him:

"He got 'em last year during ISTaZ training. For getting outstanding grades or something like that… I was sick in my cabin that day, and he just came back and said they've given him those, but didn't want to tell me any details."

Everyone looked at Ben questioningly. He just shrugged again.

Joel started to nag Ben to tell details. Ben didn't want to.

Finally, after five minutes of arguing, Tommy stated:

"Okay, enough arguing already, I wanna start reading!"

"Okay, " replied Ben, being glad to get away from the pins theme. "Let's sit in a circle."

36 – Young Prince

The kids sat in a circle around the sunburst pins. The pins, backlighted by the NeoLight, were warmly glowing, producing a magical gray twilight that was just right for the reading of a story. Ben opened the journal on the first page and said:

"The name of the story is not written here, it just starts right away. So… Here goes."

The five kids sat quietly, waiting for Ben to begin his reading. The light reflected off of the pins flickered. Silence hovered inside the cave. The soft rustling of the trees in the light wind was heard from the outside. Finally, Ben began reading.

"It was early morning, as the yellow sun was yet to come up and the red moon was coloring everything in bordow color, when the troops appeared. Seven hundred mercenaries all dressed in red leather, on battle horses, with only one task: destroy. Jow-Zwa's men were patiently waiting behind the seventh hill. They were to protect the young prince with all cost, and Jow-Zwa was ready to give his life, only to get the young lad out of there in peace. They were only one hundred and fifty, but they knew the way. Ke-Gandhar's thugs did not. Jow-Zwa was calmly clenching the handle of his sword. The first rider of the mercenaries crossed the sixth foothill. It was time. Jow-Zwa gave a silent command to the Arbaleters squad…

Panka-Zakdan atama Roth was looking at the large muscular man sitting beside him. His face was dark but confident. His huge palm was wrapped around the handle of a two-foot heavy Arbalet with a large arrowhead sticking out. Panka-Zakdan looked closely at the arrow. The head was not smooth, it's surface was carved in the shape of a toothed ladder. For extra validity. This way the arrow rips the organs apart and cannot be pulled out once it enters the body. Panka-Zakdan shivered, imagining the arrow hit someone. His bodyguard did not notice, he was heavily concentrating on his own wrist, and his powerful muscles were visibly moving underneath his skin, without any actual movement of his hands. Right, the way. He is accumulating energy. Panka-Zakdan was learning to do that on battle lessons, from Jow-Zwa. Jow-Zwa always said at the end of the lesson: "the young prince has more energy inside than ten warriors! The young prince will be a great warrior one day!" Great, why doesn't he let "the young prince" fight then? Why must the "young prince" sit here, behind this man-mountain, and wait for the others to die for him?.. "The young price must not fight, for it is great risk. The young prince will be emperor one day." Panka-Zakdan argued, tried to convince Jow-Zwa that he is ready to fight, he even tried to order the commander: "I am the emperor's son! I outrank you, Jow-Zwa! You must do what I say, and I say you let me battle!." Jow-Zwa smiled, put his hand on the boy's hair and said: "The young prince has fire. Wait, young star, your time to battle will come. Emperor's son outranks Jow-Zwa, but Emperor outranks son. Emperor told Jow-Zwa: protect my boy at all cost! So Jow-Zwa cannot let young prince battle." The "young prince" spit aside, angrily threw the smiling commander's hand off his head and walked into his tent, loudly closing the flap. No fair. And a few minutes later this huge… pile of muscles comes in here, bows to the "young prince", and sits beside him with that Arbalet. Bodyguard.

Panka-Zakdan once again looked on the concentrating warrior. Just in case, and because he had nothing better to do, he also started collecting energy into his hands, mindlessly watching how his muscles started flexing under his skin…

…The feeling of fire started taking over. How long was he collecting? Probably, for a pretty long time. Time doesn't matter when you are collecting energy. He was no longer feeling his body; there was no more flesh, skin, arms, legs… There was a charged fireball, ready to burn everything and everyone in it's way. He opened his eyes and allowed his ears to listen again. Sounds burst in suddenly, filling his being alongside the fire. He immediately realized that the battle had begun. Outside people were screaming, metal was clinging, Arbalet straps were flapping, arrows were whistling.

With his eyes, Panka-Zakdan could see everything, even what was behind him. He saw what he felt and heard. He saw the warrior sitting beside him. The warrior was also in the state; Panka-Zakdan could see the fire inside of him burning. Suddenly, they both heard (and saw, even though it was outside the closed up tent), how a mercenary is being stabbed, right next to them. And then a long sword tore the leather and the already dead man's face appeared inside, as he fell onto the crack he himself had made. Both the warrior and Panka-Zakdan immediately perceived what is happening outside.

Jow-Zwa was wrong. There were more mercenaries than he thought. He was right that seven hundred thugs are no mach for his squad, each and every warrior of which knew "the way", but he did not think there would be immediate re-enforcements. After his men killed the first few hundred with only minor losses, he suddenly spotted another army running from behind the hills. Where did they come from? The experienced commander was starting to get worried for the life of the young prince, Panka-Zakdan atama Roth, whose life he swore to protect. He immediately realized that no matter what the enemy will break in close enough to get to the tent. Leaving the battleground, he ordered a ring of fifty warriors to surround the tent and protect it, while the remaining squad will keep fighting the front line. His order was carried out immediately. But very quickly, the front line was forced to step back, as their energy was on the limit. They have been fighting in the state for too long. A few dozen creeps managed to break inside the camp, heading for the central tent. The protecting circle immediately killed them, but after them came more and more… until one thug broke inside the circle and was killed attempting to jump at the tent. His sword tore the tent's leather when the heavy arrow hit his neck, leaving him dead on the spot. The arrow was fired by Jow-Zwa, standing a bit to the side of the tent. Then he heard a loud roar from inside, and Mahra-Kolra, his most proven warrior, that was ordered to guard the prince, jumped outside. He was fresh power that was badly needed. All of the battle he was inside, collecting energy. His eyes were blazing with fire and his huge arms holding an Arbalet and a double sword.

Mahra-Kolra was huge. He was almost twice larger than any of the stupid thugs and thirty times as powerful, and that is without using the way. When he was using the way he was the most lethal weapon in the world, probably. Mercenaries were flying this way and that, and those that weren't flying, dead or fatally wounded were running away as quickly as they could.

Jow-Zwa was calmly looking at his champion, crushing the enemy, even though in his heart was worry. The mercenaries were like flies, they were everywhere, and more and more kept coming. When Mahra is busy fighting someone can creep inside the tent and hurt the prince. And if he left the field to go guard the boy, who will command the battle? He decided he was going to go in and guard the prince after all. He had trust in his men to continue the battle without him. And as he started walking towards the tent, disaster happened. A loud roar once again covered the field, a roar of pain. And when Jow-Zwa had turned, he saw Mahra-Kolra falling down.

It was a squad of enemy arbaleters. They all fired at once, and Mahra fell down, hit by a dozen poisoned arrows. For the first time during this battle, Jow-Zwa became scared. And blamed himself. If he had not turned away to go into the tent, he would have spotted the enemy arbaleters. There weren't huge armies of enemies left, Mahra killed many. But without a fresh warrior they would probably fail to endure the last strike of the remaining thugs. And then, making Jow-Zwa's heart jump with terror, from inside the tent came another roar…

…Panka-Zakdan saw everything. In the state he could see and feel all around him. And he saw Mahra-Kolra fall down, his energy fireball becoming black in Panka's senses and exploding with a cry of pain and helplessness. "It's time", decided the boy…

…Jow-Zwa watched in horror as the tent was torn, and the most revered and precious child in the world appeared from within. "It's the end", thought Jow-Zwa. And run in the direction of the boy, to protect him with his own flesh if necessary.

Panka-Zakdan, however, did not seem to need any protection. He was burning from inside, his eyes casting fire on the enemies he saw around. He also remembered about the squad of arbaleters, so he knew he cannot stand still for a single moment or an arrow will get him. With one energetic impulse hit he threw three thugs away from him, picking up a long sword in the process. As a sharp contrast to the giant Mahra-Kolra, the prince was tiny compared to the thugs. But his energy field seemed to outglow even the gigantic experienced warrior. He was like a bolt of lightning, zooming around the enemies and hitting them faster than they could see him. Jow-Zwa stopped for a moment, witnessing the skill of the boy. But he quickly regained his line of thought. As pretty as the sight of his student slaying huge thugs was, Jow-Zwa knew that the boy is not experienced enough to withstand the battle. He quickly ordered his men to prevent any more enemies from coming into the circle – whatever it takes! – while he himself ran to the boy to help him finish off the thugs what were already on the field. And he got there just in time.

Panka-Zakdan was on a row, and he felt it. Enemies were falling all around him, and he didn't even receive a single hit yet. Starting to get a little cocky, the boy did a double back flip during which he kicked the head of some trash bellow him, and landed perfectly. Suddenly, he was pushed aside by a strong arm and felt sharp pain on the side of his throat. He immediately jumped onto his feet, grabbed his sword and looked around. It was Jow-Zwa, with a very concerned look in his face. Panka-Zakdan turned around and stabbed a large thug that was trying to creep from behind, but while he did it he felt something warm and moist drip down his shoulder…

..In a few short minutes the battle was over, and victory was achieved. Over a thousand enemy men were killed, and a hundred more were captured. And as the remaining warriors turned their heads to look, they saw their commander leaning over the young prince. Jow-Zwa turned around and ordered:

"An antidote and the healer! Fast!"

The healer wasn't hurt. He was found in one of the tents on the edge of the camp, and with him he brought a black bottle of poison antidote. Jow-Zwa held the boys head tight and warned:

"This will hurt. Be prepared, young prince."

The boy quietly nodded. Jow-Zwa spilled the greenish-black substance onto the wound. The boy twitched, tears appearing in his bright eyes. But he did not scream. After he thermally washed the wound with the antidote, Jow-Zwa moved away and let the healer do his work. The old man kneeled next to the boy, rubbing his palms together. Then, he slowly touched the wound all around, watching it slowly close under the bio-energetic fields he was creating with his hands.

The boy was feeling a tremendous relief, as if someone took away the sharp pain on his neck and at the same time made him relaxed and wonderfully light. He mumbled something, then closed his eyes with a smile. Jow-Zwa lifted the boy on his arms and carried him over to a tent, where the young prince was placed on a bed and immediately fell asleep…"

Ben looked around and saw that he had everyone's complete attention. The kids' faces were of intense interest. They were eager to hear more. Joel quietly whispered:

"Wow… That does sound a little bit like what you said you could do, Ben."

Ben seriously responded:

"Yeah… It's not exactly what I feel, but it is pretty close…"

"Uhum, yeah, it is," impatiently said Sammy. "Well, come on, what happened next?"

"Yeah, keep reading, Ben," said Joel and sat more comfortably.

Ben lowered his eyes back to the journal and resumed his reading.

"When Panka-Zakdan woke up, he noticed that the sun was creeping in through the cracks in the tent. That meant that it was high afternoon. When the battle ended it was just over six o'clock, if he remembers correctly. Wow! Did he just sleep for a whole day's length? The boy raised his head. Immediately, he felt a dull pain in his neck. Touching the spot he felt a long stripe – a scar. Damn it, that was such a shame. Everything was going so well before he forgot about the arbaletters! The arrow would have killed him for sure if Jow-Zwa wouldn't have pulled him out of harms way. But it still slashed on the side of his throat. Suddenly he was attacked by fear: what if now he can no longer practice the way?! Panka jumped up to run and ask Jow-Zwa, but suddenly he stopped and imagined how pathetic it would look if he ran out of the tent crying: "Jow-Zwa! Does this scar mean I can't enter the state anymore?!." Why act hysterically? He can check by himself.

The boy concentrated, turned his mental sight inside of himself, and felt the energies run through his body. In a minute or two fire started to tentatively appear in front of his eyes. Thank the lord, everything seems to be working fine. The boy shook his head and let go of the energy flow, the fire disappeared. He suddenly thought of Rem… How Rem was jealous when Panka managed to get into the state for the first time. He kept asking how it felt and kept pleading: "You gotta teach me this, dude! Come on, please?.. Zak… Teach me!"

Warm feelings of friendship and love washed over the young prince. What was so special about that boy? Nothing. He was the son of the ex-Royal Bedroom Keeper (and national hero) Jed-Ikara-Skaz. They were born during the same week, the prince and the keeper's son, and both lost their mothers soon thereafter: the keeper's son at age four, when she died of a terrible illness, and the Prince at age five, when enemy snipers shot her outside the palace. The boys grew up together, under the guidance of their fathers, one becoming the young prince that was adored by the whole people, and one as his closest and most loyal friend. Around the palace they were always seen together. Rem (or Remada-Ikara-Jozes, as most people called him) was a dark-haired kid of average height, with a dark complexion and deep green eyes, always smiling, always forgiving, always warm and caring. Zak (or Prince Panka-Zakdan atama Roth, as everyone besides the royal family and Jow-Zwa were required by law to call him) was slightly taller, with light sandy hair, bright-cyan eyes, energetic (sometimes too much for his own good) and serious. He knew what his calling was, and knew that someday he will be emperor. And even though Rem was sometimes a little jealous of the respect Zak was getting, everyone knew that the prince's life will not be an easy one and Zak sometimes wished it was the other way around: that Rem would be the prince and he would be just a normal kid with no obligations or royal future…

Despite of all their differences, Zak and Rem were like brothers. And two years ago they really did become brothers, when Rem remained with no parents at all… No, let's not think about sad things. Better think about happy stuff. Once, when they were eight, influenced by the epic Wazwazanna battle, they made a pact that if they ever end up in a situation like the great Hamal-Gra and Mooko the Warrior, one of them would give his life to save the other. Then they started arguing about who will give his life for whom. Rem insisted that it should be him, because Zak, after all, is the sole ire of the emperor, and is very important, thus his life is more important. Zak disagreed that as a prince he must commit acts of bravery and self-sacrifice to be an example for the people, so it should be him who dies and saves Rem. They never did reach an agreement on that one…

…Zak smiled thinking of his best friend. And thought proudly: "wait till you hear about the battle we just won! Jow-Zwa will probably make it look like I've saved the whole squad…" Zak blushed a little at the thought, but decided not to interfere. After all, it is kind'a nice when everyone looks at you like you're the national hero… Then he thought of his father and blushed more. No, he can never lie to dad. He will tell him everything the way it happened. What will dad say?.. What will Jow-Zwa say, come to think of it?.. He did start fighting without permission. But there was no alternative, and everyone knows it! Zak smiled at the thought that dad could still punish him for this, and considered for a moment if it was worth it. Yep, it was. Even if he gets punished. Say what you may, it was damn fun to kick some ass in the state!

With that thought Zak put his head on his arms and once again imagined Rem's reaction when he gets the news…"

Ben once again paused his reading for a second, opened a bottle of water that he got from his backpack earlier and took a sip. All the other kids were impatiently silent, waiting for him to continue. Ben smiled and resumed the story.

"…When they were passing the monoruicks valley, Jow-Zwa made another attempt to convince Zak that he should not risk his life:

"Young Prince is good fighter, I do not say he is not, but Young Prince also study to be great leader. Jow-Zwa is good fighter, but Jow-Zwa is not good leader. Jow-Zwa doesn't know important things: read, write, talk to enemy. Jow-Zwa just knows how to fight enemy. If Emperor gone, and Young Prince gone, then Jow-Zwa doesn't know what to do. Does Young Prince understand?"

The "Young Prince" understood, but said with a stubborn look on his face:

"If I haven't interfered then they would get me anyway. And many more men would have died. So this time, it was right for me to fight and you know it."

"Maybe it was okay for Young Prince to fight this time, but it is not right for Young Prince to fight. No matter that many Jow-Zwa's men die, they die to protect Young Prince. No matter even when thousand die, its okay when die to protect Young Prince…"

"No, it is not okay! How can you say that its okay?! A thousand men? I'm just one man! I mean, one boy!"

"Even two thousand is okay, because Young Prince is not one boy; Young Prince is very important one boy, more important than men…"

"No, I'm not more important! Everyone are the same, dad told me so!"

"Okay, if Young Prince insists that he not more important, then so be it; but Young Prince should understand this: All those men have order; protect Young Prince, and they die to make order. Then at end of battle Young Prince jumps out to fight and gets killed. Then all men that died to make order, order of protecting Young Prince, die for nothing because no more Young Prince. So Young Prince should not fight."

Zak frowned, spit to the ground and said:

"Yeah, yeah, you can always turn it around like that. Let's just stop talking about this, okay?.. You're a hell of a demagogue."

"As Young Prince wish, we do not talk about this anymore. But can Young Prince allow one question for Jow-Zwa?"

"What is it?"

"Jow-Zwa does not understand, what is 'demagogue'. Can Young Prince explain to Jow-Zwa?"

"Sure. A demagogue is someone who can convince anyone of anything using alternative ways and turning things around, making things up and stuff like that."

Jow-Zwa thought for a few moments and started:

"In that case Jow-Zwa disagree. Jow-Zwa is not demagogue. Jow-Zwa did not make up things, and did not turn anything. Jow-Zwa just say that…"

Zak interrupted him:

"Okay, fine, whatever, just leave me alone, okay?!"

"As Young Prince wish."

And Jow-Zwa turned away, focused on his horse and the road ahead. Zak lowered his head in frustration. Great, Jow-Zwa just had to ruin Zak's good mood, didn't he? All those arguments… pretty good arguments, actually. Damn it! Zak was pissed that Jow-Zwa won the discussion. For some strange reason, Jow-Zwa's primitive logic was always enough to win arguments with Zak. And he says he is not a good leader! One thing Zak was always good at was arguing. He could out-argue anyone, even his father sometimes. Dad would smile and run his large hand through Zak's hair when an argument went in the youngster's favor and say: "You would be a great emperor one day…" But not Jow-Zwa. Jow-Zwa always found something very simple to say that always made it feel like he had the last word.

By that way, that's what Rem always said about Zak when they argued: "You always have to have the last word, don't you?" Zak, having his father a smart man who knew that knowledge is power, was steadily turning out to be a very educated boy. He had four teachers around him almost every day of his life in the castle. They taught Zak mathematics, linguistic skills, energy physics, books, manners, discussion rules, ethics, politics and everything else that a leader of a people should know to rule wisely. So he had a clear advantage over Rem, who was only learning reading and writing, and some math. Rem knew that Zak could easily win any argument but he still confronted his friend every time, refusing to just give up. He had this quality in his character: his refusal to give up or let go. When he and Zak argued he would get very serious about his points and in the end when Zak would win, Rem would just say something like "Okay, let's not talk about this anymore"; and throughout the whole day afterwards he would walk around sad making Zak feel guilty. Sometimes it got really bad and they stopped talking to each other for the rest of the day, but before going to sleep they would always make up.

Zak remembered their worst ever fight very well. It was just about half a year ago, and it was about some stupid military move, he doesn't even remember exactly what it was now. They fought for a whole hour, and then Zak, after presenting his devastating arguments said: "You see?" Rem said that no, he doesn't see anything. Zak asked if Rem STILL claimed his way and Rem said yes. Zak said "Prove it." Rem said "I just know I'm right, I don't need to prove it." Then Zak, getting mad and frustrated, blurted out without thinking: "That's cause you're stupid, you can't prove anything you say."

Rem looked at him with those dark sad eyes of his and just walked away without saying a word. Zak was too mad then to think about what he said, but later it suddenly hit him. He stopped in the middle of the corridor on his way to the yard: "oh my god, what have I done?! I just called my best friend stupid, and for real!" The remainder of the day Zak walked around like he's mortally ill, and finally, in the late evening he found the courage to go and talk to Rem. He walked into his best friend's bedroom slower than he ever did before. Rem was already in bed, but he wasn't sleeping, he was quietly reading the Mecerar's journal that he borrowed from Zak a few weeks before. Zak silently walked over to Rem's bed, and sat on the corner. Rem just then noticed him and looked right into his eyes, with that same sad look. Zak didn't know what to say. He leaned closer to Rem's face and touched his arm. Then he finally managed to squeeze out:

"Dude… You know… What I said back then… I…"

Suddenly Rem threw off his blanket, extended his arms and pulled Zak into a tight hug. Zak felt so warm inside, and it was like a hundred-ton weight was lifted off his shoulders. He breathed out loudly, in a soft cry, and suddenly words came out easy, without the stuttering, as he mumbled quickly:

"I'm sorry, I'm so-so sorry, you know I didn't mean it dude, right? You know I didn't mean it, right? Rem?"

Rem held him close and quietly nodded his head. And then…

Zak didn't even know himself why he did it; it just felt that it is the right thing to do. He leaned closer to Rem's face and kissed him. A gentle light kiss, right on the boy's lips. Rem was a little hesitant at first, but then he tentatively returned the gesture. After a few seconds they broke contact. Rem's eyes were cheerful and a little surprised. He smiled and asked:

"What was that for?"

Zak looked back and said what he was thinking:

"Cause I love you."

Rem said looking into Zak's eyes:

"I love you too…" and after some thought he added: "When you're not a jerk."

Zak smiled and leaned back in, starting another kiss.

When their lips broke Zak looked down to find Rem's nightgown forming a small tent. Rem also looked there, and both boys started laughing…

…It was after that evening they started their mutual masturbation sessions. They both did it alone before, both knew the other was doing it – they even shared techniques, both saw each other naked a zillion times – at home, in the washhouse or swimming in the lake, but for some reason the thought of doing it together never crossed their minds until that night and that kiss they shared…

…The horse swung aside avoiding a painful encounter with a spike bush, bringing Zak back to present time. They were just in the end of the Monoruicks valley. Jow-Zwa was silently riding near the boy. Zak curiously looked at the legendary warrior. Was he even a bit insulted by Zak being rude to him like that?.. Does he get insulted at all? Doesn't seem so. Zak called:

"Hey, Jow-Zwa…"

The commander looked at Zak and responded immediately:

"Yes, young prince?"

"Do you ever get insulted by anyone?"

"Jow-Zwa does not understand what young prince mean."

"Well, do you ever feel sad over things people say to you?"

"Depends on people. When Emperor say something sad, like emperor brother die, then Jow-Zwa sad."

"No, I mean things they say about you."

"Jow-Zwa doesn't have time to be sad for things people say about Jow-Zwa. It is just words. Words don't hurt Jow-Zwa."

"Yeah… Well, I wish I could be like that."

"Like what?"

"Like you. So that words won't hurt me. Usually they hurt me the most."

"Someday Young Prince understand that words are just words, then they don't hurt anymore."

"Maybe… Do you think dad would be mad about me doing what I did?"

Jow-Zwa smiled:

"Don't worry, Young Star. Let Jow-Zwa talk to emperor. Jow-Zwa say the truth, then emperor not mad."

"Okay…" said Zak. And then added:" Thanks.""

Ben stopped to take another sip, and looked at his five listeners. He read everything as it was written, and was a little worried about reading the parts that involved sexuality. But it didn't seem to affect anyone in a bad way when he read about the kiss that the boys in the story shared. Ben waited a moment to hear the soft rustling of the trees outside. It was quickly becoming dark as night descended. Then he continued.

" At sunset the caravan reached the city. People were quick to give way for the tired horses as they saw the Elite Commander or their army, Jow-Zwa, followed by the Prince himself, ride into the walls of Zanna. They headed straight for the emperial palace.

Zak admired how beautiful the decorated walls of the castle were in the red illumination provided by the setting sun. Scenes of bravery and glory were portrayed on those walls, telling the stories of major great battles the empire had won, and portraits of great warriors. On the other side of the wall were carved portraits of all the great emperors. Zak dreamt that one day his portrait would be on both sides of that wall.

The gates opened. Jow-Zwa, by tradition, gave way to the young prince to ride into the palace. Zak directed his horse in between the massive gates as he tried to assume a graceful sitting position, to look dignified. He was sure that behind the gates is, as always, father, waiting for him. But as he looked around the yard he couldn't see the emperor. "Strange", thought Zak, "dad is always here to meet me after a journey." But then he quickly forgot about the elder's absence as he spotted a dark-haired boy standing in the center of the yard.

Rem looked concerned, and was stretching his neck out to see better who was riding in. Zak immediately dropped the "dignified" facade and swiftly jumped off his horse, running towards his best friend. Rem finally noticed Zak and the drops of worry dissolved in his eyes, as his face turned happy and his mouth stretched into a wide smile. Finally, they stood next to each other, briefly looking into each-other's eyes. Then Rem extended his arms and the two boys shared a brief hug. Zak quickly broke it though, and before Rem had a chance to say anything, pulled his best friend by the hand in the direction of the palace screaming on the way:

"Dude! You're not gonna believe what happened! Come on already, I'll tell you all about it!"

Rem had nothing else to do then to give in and the two boys ran into the castle entrance, not even noticing the two guards at the door that hurried to bow when the young prince ran by.

***

"You jumped out?!" Rem wide opened his eyes, not quite believing what he heard."

"Yeah! I knew that we weren't gonna make it if I didn't, so I did. They needed a fresh warrior."

"Yeah, Zak, a Warrior! Not a twelve-year-old!"

"Hey! Don't go there! You know I'm a good warrior."

"Yeah, yeah, the pride of our empire, yadda-yadda. Go on, what happened?"

"Well, everything was going great. I probably killed like thirty thugs. But that stupid arbaleters squad… I forgot all about them."

"And?!.."

"And nothing. Jow-Zwa pushed me out of the way, so the arrow only scratched my neck."

"Oh my God! But it was probably poisoned!"

"Yeah… The healer had an antidote. Here, check this out." – and Zak proudly demonstrated his fresh scar to his best friend's amazed eyes. Rem swallowed hard and said:

"Does it hurt?"

"Nah, not anymore. It did at first. But it was strange, you know: it was like someone else's pain. It was very sharp, but I felt like it was outside of me, so I didn't even scream or anything. It felt weird. And then I felt the blood going down my shoulder… It was pretty scary."

"Shit, dude… Are you sure you're okay?"

"Yeah, I'm fine. But what about you? You looked kind'a strange when I rode in."

"Well… To tell you the truth, I kind'a felt something happened to you… I don't know how, I just felt it. So I got worried, and was waiting to see if you were okay."

Zak's eyes widened:

"What do you mean, you 'felt it'? How could you have felt it?"

"I don't know. That's what is weird. It's been happening a lot lately; I feel bad things that are happening even if I'm not really there…"

"Wow! That's cool! Maybe you're a prophet?"

"Am not! Come on! A prophet senses things that are about to happen, not things that already did happen!"

"Yeah, good point… Come on, let's go. I wanna say hi to dad."

And the two boys ran out from Zak's room and ran down the hall, where the study of the emperor was.

The study was empty. Zak was beginning to get worried. First his dad wasn't there to meet him, and then he is not in his study. Zak didn't know where to go next, but as always, Rem provided a counterweight to Zak's emotionally driven character with his own levelheaded thinking. He immediately suggested:

"Let's ask Jow-Zwa."

That's right! Ask Jow-Zwa! Why didn't Zak think of that? Both boys headed outside. Zak knew for sure that after a battle Jow-Zwa would be outside talking to his men before allowing them to go home. The guards at the doors once again hurried to bow as two boys swiftly ran by…

Sure enough, Jow-Zwa was making a speech to his men. Zak, without thinking much, interrupted him:

"Hey, Jow-Zwa!"

"Yes, Young Prince?" the commander immediately turned away from his men and towards the boy.

"Where is my dad? Did you see him?"

"Yes, young prince, Jow-Zwa see Emperor. Emperor is in sleeping chambers."

"Strange… Why is he in the chambers before night time?"

"The Emperor say he rest for this day, because headache."

"Oh… Okay, thanks Jow-Zwa!"

Zak turned to Rem and both boys started running. Suddenly Zak stopped, saying to Rem:

"Wait a second, dude…"

Turning back, he walked up to Jow-Zwa and interrupted him again by pulling the warrior's sleeve. Jow-Zwa turned again, and asked:

"Yes, Young Prince?"

For some strange reason Zak felt a little bit embarrassed. He said quietly:

"Did you talk to him?.. About today?.. You know…"

Jow-Zwa didn't laugh at the awkwardness of the boy, he didn't sport a superior smile, didn't snicker under his nose. He looked at Zak without the tiniest hint of amusement in his eyes and said seriously and sincerely:

"Yes. Jow-Zwa talk to Emperor. Emperor understand."

Zak looked at the mighty man with grateful eyes:

"Thanks, Jow-Zwa."

Jow-Zwa smiled and replied, for some strange reason phrasing a correct sentence:

"You are welcome, Young Prince."

Zak smiled back and ran back towards Rem.

***

Rem Stopped when the two boys were approaching the emperor's sleeping chambers. Zak also stopped, looking at his friend with a question. Rem explained:

"You go ahead. I'll wait here."

Of course, here it is again. Zak became a bit angry. What is this fear everyone has from the emperor? Jeez! He is just a man. He is a great man, no doubt, but for Zak he was what he always was: his warm and loving daddy. He did not understand the fear other people expressed in even looking at the emperor. And Rem… Well, he and Zak grew up together, always side by side. Dad considered Rem as his own stepson, especially since Rem's father died. Rem's dad was the emperial bedroom keeper, a smiley man that was the only one of the serving personnel to become a pal of the emperor and sometimes his confidant. Two years ago Rem's dad was during a friendly chat with the Emperor, and asked why the great Emperor is sad lately. The Emperor was not afraid to tell his confidant that he has extremely sensitive documents to be transported into the enemy empire, to his spies there, its a matter of life and death for the whole two-hundred spies working there, and no one of the men he trusted completely was available to deliver the papers. The loyal but simple men would not be clever enough to sneak the documents past the border, and the warriors would blow their cover to engage in battle with enemy scum. Rem's father immediately suggested his services, and with a blessing from the emperor he was sent on his way to become a national hero. But he never returned. The documents were safely delivered, and on the way back he ran into a battalion of enemy forces. One of the men in the battalion was an ounce smarter than the others, so with the clay he called brain he cooked up a heavy and extremely intelligent thought: if the man is going in the direction of the enemy empire, that means he must be an enemy. The poor bedroom keeper was killed immediately, and his body was found somewhat later by a battalion sent by the emperor who was worried about his friend not returning at the set time. When the battalion returned with the news, Jed-Ikara-Skaz was made into a national hero and was buried in the warriors' cemetery outside the city, with a touching speech by the emperor, and was very quickly forgotten by everyone except the people that truly did care about him: The Emperor and two little boys that lived in the palace…

Of course Zak missed the funny kind-hearted man, but he understood that his loss is nothing in comparison to that of his best friend's. Both boys lost their mothers when they were a mere four years old, and Zak still felt the pain of her loss sometimes. At first, Rem cried a lot. Zak would calm him the best he knew how, and sometimes it helped. Then came a period when Rem no longer cried, he was just submerged in gray melancholy, always sad, never cheerful. But it too had passed, the wounds have healed, and Rem became Rem again. He still missed his father a great deal, though. It was then that the Emperor decided to take the boy under his care, and announced him as Zak's stepbrother. Zak was thrilled, but Rem didn't really pay much attention to that, and nothing really changed. Most people didn't even know about that issue, and the ones who did know about it didn't take it seriously. And as for Zak and Rem – they were already like brothers since they were born, so naturally nothing really changed for them either. Except one thing: Rem stopped being so afraid of the great Emperor and would sometimes go talk to his caretaker together with Zak. But he still refused to fully implement for himself that the emperor is his stepfather. He just did not want to grasp it. You could sum up their relationship as a young nephew that is visiting his distant and important uncle, whom he respects and is slightly afraid of. Zak always tried to get the two closer, but Rem did not cooperate.

And now, as always, Rem did not want to come into the Emperor's bedroom. Zak urged his friend on:

"Come on, dude, don't start this again! You can come in there, he wouldn't mind."

Rem looked up and said the usual:

"It's his sleeping chambers. I have no right to disturb him there."

"Damn it, come on, will ya! How many times do I have to tell you: he wouldn't mind you being there! It will only make him happy! It makes him happy when I'm there!"

Once again, the usual reply followed:

"You are his son, I'm not."

Zak punched the wall beside him to work out his anger, and said:

"Fine, stay here, you little chicken! I'm goin' in."

Rem calmly replied:

"Okay. I'll wait."

Zak turned away and pushed the massive door.

The emperor looked up when Zak came in. And Zak, looking at his all-mighty father, froze in his tracks.

The emperor was lying in bed, covered by a cream-colored sheet. Near the bed was a small stand, on which stood a full plate of food and a jar with wine. It was clear at first glance that the food had long since gotten cold, but it was not touched.

Ever since Zak was a baby he remembered the figure of his father as a tower of strength. And ever since he was old enough to understand the concept he knew that his father was a famed warrior, who fought many battles and was always victorious. And was very proud of that. Zak would always feel completely safe when the huge powerful man would embrace him. He would lean his small head against the muscular chest of the man he loved so much and just indulge in this feeling of protection, knowing that nothing can do him any harm… And that this powerful man would forever be there for him…

And now Zak immediately felt that something was wrong. That feeling failed to come, as on the bed was a weak man. Zak felt it with his nerves, he felt it with the energy field, he felt it with all his being.

The emperor's pale face formed a happy smile, as he saw his son come in. He lifted his upper body from the bed and extended his arms forward.

Zak, without hesitation, ran into those large arms, and in a second father and son were sharing a warm hug.

"Dad, you're not mad, are you? " was the first thing the excited boy managed to ask.

"Mad? Mad about what? " asked the emperor, surprised.

"About me… Going into battle…"

The emperor smiled and ran his large fingers through the bright hair of the boy.

"Mad? You did what was necessary to save those men, and yourself. You did well, Zak. Don't have a doubt in your mind about that…" the emperor's hand suddenly froze in the boy's hair and his face became serious: "But don't you EVER do that again, okay?.. Okay, Panka-Zakdan?.."

Zak raised his eyes to meet his father's. Dad almost never called him by his given name, only when he was very serious. Zak quietly nodded.

"Because… You must understand…" the emperor continued, "that many people depend on you. That is why you are very important, Zak. Very important. What you did there was justified, but that was the last time you were in a situation like that. We will never again underestimate the enemy, and never put you in harms way like we did. So you just remember: don't do that again. You need to protect yourself at any cost, because you will soon be Emperor."

Zak looked down and stubbornly mumbled:

"Soon… Right… I'm twelve. I still have lots of time before I'm Emperor. And you can't always protect me, you know."

"I know, Zak, I know. And I pray that you are right, that you still have a long time before you are Emperor… Because I don't want you to experience my harsh life yet…"

Zak did not understand the why dad made that last statement. He never said things like that before. And a blunt touch of worry came into contact with the boy. But he drove it away, holding on to his habitual thought: daddy knows best. And that daddy, the great Emperor, once again ran his hand through his only son's hair and whispered:

"Go, play with your stepbrother. You should always relax after a battle. Go, my child…"

Zak did not need to be asked twice. He swiftly kissed his father's cheek and ran off to find Rem. Relax, he said. Well, Zak had the perfect way to do that…"

Ben paused and looked up. "Here comes the tricky part", he thought. After taking another sip he slowly stated:

"Ummm… I don't know, maybe I should skip the next part. It's kind'a… sexual, you know?"

Everyone looked at him. In their eyes was both impatience and determination. As if they were silently saying: "Come on, Ben, don't be silly." But Ben was still waiting for a more definite answer. Finally Joel said:

"Be-e-en! Who do you think we are? It's us, remember? I just did it with Sammy a little while ago, and it looks like Tommy and Nate been pretty busy too…" turning to the others he asked for approval: "Right guys? Does anyone here have any problems with sex stuff?"

Everyone hurried to shake their heads.

"See?.." concluded Joel.

Ben did see. And he did not have a doubt in his mind that no one of the group will have a problem with "sex stuff." But he was the one who had to read it…

Ben was a kid with a strong will. It took him about a minute to overpower himself, after which he lowered his eyes and resumed his reading, in a quiet equal tone…

***

"…Rem's dark hair gleamed in the yellow light of the candle. His face also gleamed, as it was slightly sweaty. His breathing was quickly becoming faster, and Zak who was in this situation with his best friend for so many times, knew that he would soon reach the point of no return. Rem whispered, stating the obvious:

"I'm getting close."

Zak increased his own actions, not to be falling behind. His breathing was also quickening as he was promptly reaching that point as well. But suddenly Rem let go of himself and looked at Zak with a question. Zak knew what it meant: Rem wanted to go there this time.

It was something they discovered a relatively short while ago. Zak and Rem both knew that going there is not something they can do every time. It consumed so much energy from both boys that it was not right, nor needed, for "quickies" – just casual wanks they shared. It was only right for long and serious sessions of relief that they shared only when they felt the need to. And this time, Rem was not the only one who felt the need to. Zak also knew he wanted to take the trip.

He too stopped his actions, and looked at Rem.

"You wanna?" asked Rem, breathing heavily.

"I think so. Are you sure?.."

"Yeah. I really wanna. We weren't there for so long… Take me there, please."

Zak nodded, and closed his eyes. Then he slowly brought his palms together, until the tips of his fingers were touching. The circuit was ready. Zak, with a mental effort, let the energy flow through. Immediately his whole body was consumed, and the boy's consciousness fell into a fiery abyss, as the circulation was building up more and more…

…Rem knew how to tell when Zak is ready. He waited until he saw those familiar spots of energy flow in his best friend's eyes. Zak was now a container, he had in him the energetical power of two people, and energy was almost leaking out of him. Rem moved closer. Zak was completely ready. Rem knew that entering the state when you are on the verge of a profound sexual release is mind bombing: your body is super-sensitive and you can feel the energy violently pushing you towards that release. It takes tremendous self-control to avoid going over the edge, breaking your hands and grabbing it to quickly bring it to a fiery finish. Rem knew that right now Zak is fighting an enormous battle within himself. More than anything right now he wants to just contact himself there, to relieve himself of the glorious pressure he is under. And the only reason he is fighting this battle is for his companion, for Rem. Rem couldn't reach this state of energy flow yet, especially when he is on the verge. He needed Zak's help. And, as always, he channeled all his energies to create an immense feeling of gratitude, so Zak would feel how much Rem needs him to win the battle, and how grateful he is for Zak letting him share his energies. So far, Zak never lost the battle, even once.

Zak felt Rem near him. He felt his energy, he felt his gratitude, and it fueled him to keep holding his own raging energies flowing inside his body, without breaking out and flowing into the air around him, creating a chain reaction of release. And then, he suddenly felt that the moment is right. That both he and Rem are ready. This clear understanding always came at some point, when you know that it's time. And Zak, channeling half of his energies for departure, disconnected the tips of his fingers.

Snap!.. …And Zak's fingertips grabbed the slightly wet warm shoulders of the boy sitting directly across from him. The energy was steadily flowing, and in front of Zak's inner sight was quickly growing a raging fireball, that got hotter and hotter by the second. Finally, the energy got so intense it was ready to burst out of the fireball across from his. And then, he felt the counter-flow…

…Rem let his body calmly receive the violent energies that were bursting out of the fireball in front of him. It was always a glorious moment, when Zak's warm fingers touched his skin and suddenly he would be inside, he was in the state. The energy inside of him grew and grew until he couldn't contain it inside anymore. The time was right, and Rem's arms threw up, touching his best friend's shoulders with his fingertips. And instinctively, just as he did the first time they took the trip, Rem's mind opened a path for the counter-flow.

He and Zak were now one. They're mutual energy was racing between their bodies, sliding faster, and faster, until the two boys could take no more. They're hands simultaneously let go of each other's shoulders and flew down, each aiming for the center of the other's violent pre-orgasmic energies, that in their consciousness seemed as a red hot throbbing outlet, the outlet for the energies they can no longer contain within themselves.

Both boys made contact simultaneously, and in that same moment their bodies shook violently, their backs arching, their energies finding that profound sexual outlet they have been searching for.

Zak watched with his inner sight how all the energy from the fiercely shaking fireball in front of him surged for the outlet he was holding between his fingers and burst out, flying through the space between them, at the same time feeling his own energy fly out. The energies collided in mid-space as the two boys kept experiencing wave after wave of intense release, until there was no more energy left and their bodies fell back powerless.

…Zak was slowly returning to normal consciousness. He noticed that he was breathing loudly, with small whimpers. Then he heard similar whimpers from across. They just lay there for a while, both enjoying the post-orgasmic calmness and listening to their own hearts calm down. Then, after taking a deep breath, Zak found the strength to move. He slowly raised his upper body, immediately feeling something warm and moist slowly run down from his chest to his stomach. He looked down to see a puddle of clear transparent liquid slowly dribble down his sweating body. It was Rem's. Then he looked over at the naked body of his best friend, still lying backwards, to see a similar puddle on his chest: slightly thicker and with a weak shade of white. "Perfect hit", thought Zak to himself with a smile.

When they went there it always fired so powerfully! "As if an arrow from a tightly strung Arbalet", suddenly thought Zak. Then the running down liquid that already reached his crotch finally brought him back to reality.

"Shit, where did you put the towels, dude?" asked Zak in a slightly distorted tone.

Hearing the question, Rem too took a deep breath and raised his upped body. Immediately looked down to see the dribbling liquid. Smiled and looked at Zak:

"Wow, yours landed right in the middle. A perfect hit!"

"Yeah, I know. Yours too, look." – replied Zak pointing to his own chest.

Both boys giggled a little, and then Rem reached for the towels that were neatly prepared on his left.

While they were diligently wiping themselves, Rem commented:

"Wow, that was a powerful one…" Then he suddenly stopped wiping and looked up at Zak: "Dude… Thanks."

"Sure," said Zak, without looking, as he continued to work the towel around his chest and tummy.

"No, dude, I really mean it… Thank you." said Rem, looking serious.

Zak finally raised his eyes and looked at Rem. Realized, that Rem is serious. Awkwardly said:

"Come on, it's not like I don't enjoy it. It's as much fun for me as it is for you, you know that."

"Yeah," replied Rem slowly, "but you don't need me to have this much fun, you can always do it by yourself. I can't. So… Thanks."

Zak smiled and simply replied:

"You're welcome."

Rem smiled as well, and resumed his cleanup procedure. After they were both done they tossed the towels aside and reached for their clothes. Zak suddenly said:

"You're right, it was a powerful one. I was afraid mine would reach the ceiling…"

Rem grinned and agreed:

"Yeah. I felt so too. I was actually afraid it would go over your shoulder and mess up the floor or something…"

Both boys burst into pleasant giggles. When those ended, Zak said:

"Well, dad's wish is granted. I don't think I can be any more relaxed than this."

And both boys, now dressed, simultaneously fell down onto the bed, exhausted."

***

Ben paused again to take a sip of water. Looking around he saw that the kids are all a bit red, being excited from the part he just read. All the boys without exception were sporting wood. And, of course, Joel had a mischievously – evil smile on his face, like he was planning something. This can get interesting, Ben thought with a smile. But he knew that the story had a different way to go. Without saying a word he lowered his eyes and resumed reading.

***

"Zak woke up late. When he finally forced himself to get out of bed and his room he noticed that there was an unusual quietness around the palace. Zak felt as if he is all of the sudden in a different place. Everyone seemed worried, and – moreover – everyone was looking at him, Zak, with compassion. What was that all about?

Zak was still hovering on a cloud from last night's "trip" with Rem, and did not pay too much attention to what was going on. He ate breakfast – even though the time was getting close to dinner, smiled at all the bowing servants on the way to and from the dining room. Met Jow-Zwa once. The commander had a worried look on his face. He promptly said "Good morning, young prince" to Zak and passed by, to do about his business. Zak shrugged and continued to Rem's room, pondering about what was going on. Everyone in the palace were long since used to having the pride of the nation – the Young Prince – run around the corridors and passageways, so it was quite impossible to greet him formally and bow every single time. But today for some reason everyone were extra-careful at being extra-formal and Zak was already getting slightly irritated by that. Moreover, some of the people started to worriedly whisper to each other, throwing compassionate glances at him. Finally, Zak reached the room of his best friend.

When he entered, Rem was sitting on the bed. Zak's heart skipped a beat when he saw the boy's face: Rem was extremely sad, even terrified. And it was clearly visible that he cried, a short while ago.

Zak ran to his best friend and took Rem's hand into his own, asking:

"What happened?.. Are you okay?.. What's wrong?.."

Rem did not answer. He raised his eyes for a moment, to look on Zak, and immediately lowered them again. But it was long enough for Zak to see tremendous suffering in those dark eyes. Zak was starting to panic:

"Dude! Don't do this to me! Tell me, what's wrong?.. Are you okay? Are you hurt or something?"

Finally Rem spoke:

"No, I'm not hurt, Zak. I'm okay, really…"

"Then what the heck is going on?! Everyone are acting weird today. And then I find you like this… What happened?"

"They told me not to tell you…"

Zak kept looking at Rem with a question. He knew that Rem would not be able to keep a secret from him. Finally, Rem worked up the courage, raised his eyes again, and looking straight into Zak's pupils he whispered:

"Your dad is sick."

Zak's eyes widened:

"So? I knew that from yesterday. I went to see him and…"

Rem suddenly interrupted with a soft cry:

"No, you don't know!! Listen!.." he stopped for a moment to take a deep breath, and continued, his voice shaking: "You don't know… Today in the morning the doctor came to see him again. And he said that it is for sure now… That it's that thing."

"What thing?.." asked Zak, his heart pounding hard and a growing uneasiness in his soul.

Rem hardly audibly whispered:

"The thing my mom had…" and then repeated louder: "It's the illness that my mother had."

Rem's eyes were still looking into Zak's. And Rem felt THAT. He felt, though Zak's eyes, what Zak was feeling. And grabbed Zak's hand firmly. An echo of painful but already dull feeling washed over the boy, as he looked at his best friend who was clearly and immensely quickly consumed by horror. Then, his blue eyes blazing with immense sadness, he quietly said:

"No…"

Then, suddenly pulling his hand out of Rem's, pushing Rem away and running backwards a few steps he scram:

"No!!"

And burst out of the room.

Rem lowered his eyes and began to cry again."

Chapter 9
Revealing the Gift

Robin couldn't help but grin as a second member of his team was awarded an Outstanding mark. This made his plan of getting everyone in his five-member team one Outstanding grade a great deal easier. Unfortunately, it also generated greater hostility from those in Randy's team.

Robin could see Randy and a couple of the others from his team, glaring at him and at Fairfax. Robin knew his fight with Randy would probably have to be repeated before the end of the testing week. Making matters worse, there was even some underlying annoyance from some of the other teams toward all Robin's team. He realized this was because only his team had a clean sweep of passing at least one test each. Further increasing the tension, no other team had a single team member pass two tests let alone two team members like Robin's team had.

He shrugged off the uneasy feeling as everyone broke for the evening testing cycle. Once back inside their team tent Robin looked over at Fairfax, "You and I are already in the academy, so we need to spend more time working with the others." He then turned to Oliver, "And you still have five tests to go to get an Outstanding mark. Ajax and Gavin only have four, because they each took a different test then the one they failed this morning."

"No sweat," Oliver stated. "Even if I didn't get an Outstanding, I get to go back to Mars. Let's make me the lowest priority."

Ajax shook his head, "No way! You're part of the team now, Oliver. There is no way we're going to push you off to the side while we all work to get to the Academy!"

Robin agreed, "Ajax is right. All I was asking for was for you to work on your next test without as much help as Fairfax and I are going to give to Gavin and Ajax. Like it or not, you're coming with us to the academy!"

Oliver blushed, "Thanks guys." His voice betrayed a combination of awkwardness and unease.

Gavin glanced over, "What's wrong, Oliver."

Oliver looked down at the ground as he debated on what to tell his new teammates. Finally he came to the conclusion the truth would be best. He took a deep breath, sensing more than feeling the eyes of the other four boys on him. "I heard about what happened in the mess tent between Robin and Randy. As much as I thank Robin for sticking up for me, Randy was right."

Fairfax felt his eyes go wide, "You mean you are gay?"

A tear trickled down Oliver's cheek. In the tiniest of whispers he spoke a single word. "Yes."

Gavin was stunned and found the admission rather shocking. He gasped but otherwise remained silent.

Fairfax absorbed the news with an interesting raise of his eyebrows as he turned to look at Robin for some leadership.

Robin was at a loss for words and it showed; yet unlike Gavin his facial expression remained calm and showed concern for his new team member, but what to say just wouldn't come to him.

Ajax, on the other hand, spoke up. "You know, Robin spoke out for you, not knowing or caring what your preference in gender is. His point was it made no difference. I agreed with him one hundred percent then, as I do now."

Ajax paused and glanced around. Seeing Robin nod, followed a moment later by Fairfax, helped him a great deal so he continued. "I grew up on the street level of Chi-Triot. My family had to stick together and we took shelter with other SL families often. Countless times I saw sex, it was a way for my parents to forget about what a horrible life we had and one by one it did the same for my sisters and brothers. More than once I saw the momentary joy sex gave them and it didn't seem to matter if it was same sex or different sex partners. The same joy was there. I also saw the effects of rape, and it was also the same no matter if it was someone of the same sex or the other sex who did it. The hurt, the shame, the helplessness was no different."

Ajax paused as he tired to shake off some of the memories of being at Street Level in a CHZ. He knew no matter what happened; being an SLO would always be a part of him, as would the constant fear of the gangs, the military sweeps, and the rats. Before he completely lost his train of thought, he continued, "What I'm trying to say is, I don't care if you're gay or not. It don't matter to me and it never will. What I care about is, can you watch my back and will you trust me to watch yours? You being gay has nothing to do with either one of those!"

Oliver wiped his eyes and looked up at Ajax, seeing the sincerity in the boy's eyes helped improve his attitude and outlook. He then slowly looked over the other three. In Fairfax he saw only a friendly smile, the same smile he saw when he first joined the small team. Glancing at Robin, he could tell his new team leader totally agreed with Ajax. He couldn't help but smile as he saw Robin nod. Finally, he looked over at Gavin.

Gavin stared back, still looking somewhat shocked. If anything there was a hint of fear in his eyes. He stammered as he spoke, "Are you sure? I mean, ah… Well, how do you know?"

Ajax looked over to Gavin with a bewildered smirk, "Duhhh, he likes boys more than girls. What do you mean are you sure?"

Fairfax snickered, "I think he means, how does he know for sure, since he's our age. Most people don't figure out who they are until they hit mid teens according to our stupid Comp-books on sex education."

"Oh, yeah," Ajax blushed feeling rather stupid. "I hadn't thought of that."

Robin giggled, "Knowing Gavin, who happens to be the biggest flirt of any kid I know; he is trying to figure out how anyone could find boys more attractive than a girl!"

Gavin punched Robin hard in the shoulder and turned a bright red. This got a round of laughter out of everyone, including Oliver.

With the tension broken Robin took over and broke the group into two teams, assigning Oliver to work with Ajax while he and Fairfax combined efforts to help Gavin. Looking over at Gavin he grinned, "So what do you want to score an outstanding grade on?"

Gavin shrugged, "My best bet is either grassland survival or night navigation. I don't know how in the heck I'm ever going to pass the individual wilderness survival or the wilderness first aid. I suck so badly in those!"

Fairfax shook his head, "I thought the same thing about rifles and hunting, because my aim is something straight out of a joke book. But I followed everything Robin told me and it worked. It was never about being a good shot. Instead, it was about safety and knowing what to look for, what to shoot in the general direction of, and most importantly, what never to do even when they set me up to do it.

"One of the instructors purposefully walked out in front of me when I saw a good target and I instantly safetied the weapon just like Robin told me to. Three others who didn't all failed and the one who actually fired was bumped down to a sonic rifle. The truth of the matter is, I was only able to take a pair of shots at a fanged lizard and missed with both. The kid from team nine, who shot it, only got a good score because he fired four shots in rapid succession instead of taking his time and conserving power."

Gavin rolled his eyes, "Just like always. I can apply for our adventure scout group to do twenty things and Robin puts in three and we end up going four places, two of mine and two of Robin's. It's like he knows exactly what to say or do sometimes and it is actually kind of annoying."

"Annoying ain't the word for it," Oliver grumbled from over at the other table. "You heard it right out of Mr. Montgomery. Only two kids have ever scored back to back Outstanding marks before, and neither of them did it on the first two tests. The record stands at three outstanding grades and that was only done once, by a kid who failed out the year before. I don't see how you do it, Robin; those tests are next to impossible the first go around!"

Robin started to shrug it off as luck, but he stopped himself. These guys, all of them, were his friends. They deserved to know the truth even if he, himself, didn't know what the full truth was. "You guys are going to think I'm some sort of a nut," He finally declared.

Fairfax was first to react to Robin's statement. "No, we think your some sort a genius. What do you mean we'll think you're nuts?"

Robin took a deep breath as he sought the right words, "The truth is; I can sometimes see things that have happened, or are going to happen, when I have no way of knowing the information on my own. Sometimes, well most of the time, it's minor stuff. Like me knowing who is at the door before they even knock or knowing there will be a surprise quiz in class the evening before so I study for it."

While Robin paused, Gavin suddenly looked excited, "I've seen you do that! You did it when my dad hid his palm computer and forgot where he hid it!"

"He did what?" Oliver managed to ask before the others.

Gavin rolled his eyes, "I had this bad habit of filling up my dad's comp-pads with games. So one day he bought a new one and hid it so he could take it to work the next day. Robin came over to my place that night and spent the night. Neither of us knew my dad even bought a new one, but the next morning my dad started yelling at me about taking it and playing with it."

"That sucks!" Ajax blurted out.

"Yeah, well, looking back on it… if I had found it I would have played with it. I have loved comp-games from the time I was old enough to push the buttons. I was always getting into trouble for playing games instead of doing chores and homework."

Oliver grinned, "Me too!"

Gavin loosened up a little toward Oliver as he smiled, "I guess we'll have to compare notes sometime."

Fairfax interrupted, "So what happened?"

Robin answered, "I'm not sure how I knew, but I told his dad the comp-pad was behind his picture of Gavin as a baby, right were he put it before Gavin got home from school so he wouldn't even know about it. I then reminded him Gavin hated that picture because he was wearing pink diapers in it, so he would never look there. The very fact I was right on the reasons he put it there got me more than a few questions, but he needed to get to work and was so apologetic to Gavin that my part was kind of forgotten in short order. Still, every time I found something one of them was missing, I always got a strange look from his dad."

"Wow," Ajax's voice betrayed his awe. "How do you make it work?"

"What do you mean?" Robin frowned

"I mean," Ajax rolled his eyes, "is how do you make yourself see those things?"

Robin tossed up his arms, "I don't. They just happen. And when really strong ones happen I get really hungry… really, really, hungry."

Fairfax interrupted, "What if you're wrong Robin?"

"What do you mean? I know when I'm hungry!"

"No, no, no!" Fairfax waved his hands seeing Robin was getting angry. "What if you're wrong about it just happening? What if you can make it happen?"

"It doesn't work that way."

"Have you ever tried?" Oliver asked after a few moments of silence in the group.

Robin chewed on his lower lip in thought for a few moments, then shook his head, "I wouldn't know how to even start. It just happens."

Fairfax's eyes glinted, "Let's try Robin."

"How?"

Fairfax thought it over for a moment, "Start with Gavin's worst subject. He said there was no chance of him passing Wilderness First-aid, so let's see if you can't tell him how to pass it like you did with me in rifles."

"Fairfax, it just doesn't work that way."

Olive spoke up, "What if it can?"

"Okay," Robin took a deep breath as he decided to play along, "What do you guys suggest?"

Fairfax pumped his fist as he saw a willingness in his friend to attempt to force this weird gift. Secretly, he didn't fully believe it was true, but after his own test there was a chance. Besides, a chance was all an SLO needed. "When you told me what to do you did it like you were having normal conversation, so start talking about it."

Robin did as Fairfax instructed, but the fact he didn't know much about it himself hindered the process. Finally he shook his head. "See? It just doesn't work that way."

"Hold on Robin," Fairfax next to begged. "Don't give up on it so fast. Try focusing on Gavin and try to see what he needs to do."

Oliver chimed in, "Look, Robin, it seems like Fairfax and Gavin believe you, and to be honest, I want to believe. If you can do this, let us help to unlock it."

Robin clenched his fists, wanting to forget he ever said anything, but he had and the others weren't going to let him give up, "How?"

Oliver licked his lips and scowled. "Well, my dad always tells me if I need to focus on something to try to block out other stimuli." Getting strange looks, he shrugged, "He's a scientist, he says lots of weird things, but they seem to work"

"Alright," Robin sighed, "What do you want me to do?"

Seeing the others looking at him, Oliver knelt and motioned Robin to sit on the ground next to him. "Sit down and close your eyes. Try to see Gavin taking the test. Gavin talk to him about what you do know."

Gavin snorted, "Yeah, sure, I'll tell you all about what will be my worst test in my life."

Ajax shook his head, "No Gavin, be serious. Try to help him. What do you have to loose anyway?"

"Nothing," Gavin agreed quickly. "Okay, I'm meeting with one of the instructors and the rest of my group. We…"

"Hold on," Fairfax spoke softly as he had a flash of inspiration, "Robin, which instructor is giving the test?"

Gavin and Ajax both frowned, but Oliver saw what Fairfax was up to and held up a finger to keep them silent.

"So who is there other than Gavin, Robin?" Fairfax prodded gently.

Suddenly, Robin felt the familiar twinge and saw the test in his mind. When he spoke his voice trembled as he realized, for the first time, the talent could be activated with a degree of control. With this knowledge, the whole thing became extremely vivid, "Mr. O'Mally is the instructor. There are four others. One of them is a plant. Adrienne, from team two, actually passed her test today but was sworn to secrecy. She is going to fall down a ridge and appear hurt, but she has inflatable padding under her suit. Mr. O'mally wants to see what your reactions will be.

"He expects you all to go after Adrienne. If you endanger yourself you will fail. Look for a safer way down. It is off to the west, going the quicker way to the northeast will get you there faster, but you will have to pass right through some red lizard mounds.

"When you get to her, you will find she is injured with what appears to be something… it's a stick… impaling her. It's a thin fake skin and blood bladder, but you won't be able to tell it. Don't remove the stick. Bandage around it. Her locator will be broken, so use your own. If she falls the way they plan, her head will be very close to the water, move her so her head is away from the stream so she can't drown then bandage the impaling object. Make sure she is in a proper shock prevention position and raise her feet using a nearby log.

"Mr. O'Mally is also looking for leadership. You must keep the rest of the group calm and not let them do anything really stupid if you want to get an Outstanding. It will help if you order others what to do, like grabbing the log for you, so you can stay with her and reassure her."

Robin stopped talking and rocked forward only to be caught by Ajax, "Holy crap! I saw it! I really saw it!" Ajax nearly shouted, "OH, man, I can feel his stomach growling too!"

Fairfax jumped up, "I'll get some food. Keep an eye on him!"

Robin shook and cried, "I told you I was a freak…"

"No, Robin," Oliver stated as he slid closer and used his shirt sleeve to wipe away some of Robin's tears, "That was incredible! I was able to see it in my own mind as you were talking!"

"Me, too!" Gavin stated while hugging his friend, "I saw it from the second you talked about the lizard mounds! You took us in to your… your… power… It was amazing!"

Ajax also nodded, "I saw it at the exact same time. It was like I was there! If this pans out, and it doesn't really hurt you, we'll all get Outstanding marks with no problem. But, Robin, if this hurts you, don't do it. I'll go back to the ChiTroit orphanage before I let you hurt yourself to help me."

Robin gulped, "No… It has never hurt me… I'm just hungry and cold… very hungry." He paused and glanced over to Oliver, "And no, I won't get angry if you want to wrap your arms around me to help me warm up… and no, I don't mind the fact you think I'm cute."

"You can read my mind?" Oliver asked as he moved to basically let Robin snuggle into him.

"I'm actually seeing all your thoughts… all of you… but I think I'm getting it shut off…"

Oliver rubbed his hand though Robin's hair, "Put your head on my chest and take some breaths. Think about something fun. I heard you say you play soccer, think about kicking a ball or something." Oliver winced for a second, "Damn, you hit your head on a goal post when they put you in as a goalie?"

"What the hell?" Ajax asked as he realized he had just seen and thought the same thing. "Now you are sending us your thoughts. Take some deep breaths and think of a black piece of paper or something!"

Fairfax came back with some snack cakes and a package of crackers. "Did I just feel you thinking about not wanting to be a goalie?"

Robin nodded and took a package of the cakes. As he took his first bite, his abilities faded and he let out a giant sigh of relief. "Whoa, guys, I'm sorry. It didn't really want to turn off or whatever. I didn't mean to…"

Gavin grinned, "Sorry for what? I don't think any of us are mad!"

"Mad, no…" Fairfax shook his head, "That was the coolest thing ever! My head still feels tingly!"

"Mine too," Ajax snickered. "We actually know someone who can read minds and the future!"

Robin downed the package of crackers and shivered slightly. "Guys, until you're actually there don't talk about it or let on. I think it will screw things up and I really don't want to do this more than once for each of you unless I have to. It's not like it hurts, but I'm going to need more food than this and a nap. If you all can give me a bit…"

Oliver helped Robin stand, "Okay, Gavin you know what you need to do. Let's drop it and let it happen." He continued to hold onto Robin as he watched Robin wobble a bit. "In the mean time, let's get you tucked into a cot and keep an eye on you. Me and Gavin can compare note-puter games for a while, so it won't be like we are just sitting there watching you or something."

Gavin quickly nodded, "Oliver is right. Let's get you into a bed."

"Ajax and I will go over his next test, since I have my outstanding I can slack off."

Oliver nodded, "Good idea, and Robin, I want you to focus on Ajax next. I can go without…"

"No," Robin stated firmly. "We all get an Outstanding and go to the academy together or I won't go."

Gavin stepped behind Robin so he could get out of the boy's line of sight and shook his head in warning, letting them all know it was not worth arguing. "Robin, get some rest. With any luck, we'll be able to help Oliver and Ajax get an outstanding without your help."

Chapter 10
Team Work

Gavin was the first to wake. Truth be told, he hadn't slept much. He had managed a couple of cat naps but the events of the prior evening were still very fresh in his mind and he was worried about Robin. His best friend had eaten almost another full meal and every snack the rest of the team could smuggle out of the training camp kitchen.

The other thing Gavin found himself troubled over was having so much advanced knowledge about the upcoming test; it kind of felt like he was cheating. On the other hand, he argued with himself, knowing what was planned and what he had to do was only half the battle. The other half was doing all the first aid properly. On this he knew in his heart he didn't need any help. The explorer scout troop he and Robin belonged to was big on first aid and the training was actually better than what he had received since his arrival at the testing camp. Still, he couldn't help but wonder why he hadn't gotten a better mark the day before on general first aid. He had done everything perfectly.

Knowing his mind was now starting to spin in endless circles he got up and dressed as quietly as he could and slipped out of the tent. He shivered as he felt a couple of snowflakes hit his face and melt. His eyes turned skyward letting a few more hit his face. "This is so freaking amazing!" he spoke softly to himself.

Off to the side he heard someone clear their throat and he turned, only to see Jasper looking at him with a wide smile. Gavin grinned back and tilted his head skyward again letting more small flakes of snow hit his face.

Jasper moved closer, "Not like the nasty rain and snow we get back on Earth, huh?"

"No…" Gavin spoke softly still enjoying the fact precipitation falling out of the Zong sky was clean enough to drink and it didn't have a smell to it like the pollutant filled Earth sky dropped on people in the CHZ's. "Did Earth really used to be like this?"

"As hard as it is to believe, yes," Jasper responded. "Without the terraforming of Mars, I am afraid Zong would be losing this as well. To be honest, I don't know how many more years we can keep Zong for just AdventureQuest and scientific study. Sooner, rather than later, we are going to have to start moving people off of Earth before we kill the planet."

"My mom has a pretty high spot in the government and has hinted at the same thing." Gavin paused and sighed, "I know I'm not supposed to know this, but I have heard her on the vid link talking to some other scientists. I know there are even a few marginal worlds you all have found which are being set with terraform stations and jump gates. I even heard something about the explorers identifying promising Zong students to run them since there're too many adults who can't. I really didn't understand why until Oliver told us about OSS and how many in his Mars settlement have died."

Jasper let out a long breath, "I am not going to lie to you cadet, things are getting bad, but you need to keep this information to yourself."

"I haven't even told Robin, although he has been around my parents enough to where he probably knows almost as much as I do. But to be honest, we really don't want to talk about it. Mom has no idea how much me or Robin knows. She tries real hard to hide how bad things are on Earth from me, Robin and my sister, but she brings her work home too much."

"So are you worried about getting picked to learn how to run a terraforming station?"

Gavin let out a long breath and wiped a tear off his cheek, "Can I tell you something… something private?"

Jasper put his hand on the boy's back, "Any time, cadet, but let's head over to my office and get you signed up for today's test so we can keep it out of the ears of others. I can hear a few others starting to wake up."

Gavin frowned as he tried to listen, "I don't hear nothing."

"You will in a few minutes. Sara from team eighteen is about to get her whole team up for a pep talk." Jasper could see Gavin give him the look of 'how could you know?' but even this didn't totally distract from what was bothering the boy.

Jasper guided Gavin to his prefab office and moved behind his desk, "So, what is really going on inside your brain, son?"

"Sir," Gavin took an uneasy breath, "I don't want to lose Robin."

Jasper frowned deeply, "Why would you?"

"Because he is going to be an explorer; and I don't want to be stuck in some stupid classes on how to terraform in Linc-Omaha or Mia-Orlando while he goes to Den-Springs or Dal-Houston for explorer training. He's the only real friend I've ever had!"

Jasper rubbed his chin in some thought. "You are way too well informed for a tweleve year old. Not many know where our second, and actually more advanced Explorer Corps training center is and even fewer know of our two specialized schools for terraforming, let alone where they are located."

Jasper remained silent for a few seconds, then nodded as he decided to say something he knew he shouldn't. "Gavin, I could get into a great deal of trouble for this, but I am going to hint at something, just hint. Okay?"

Gavin took a nervous stuttering breath and nodded, "I understand, sir."

"Good." Still Jasper kept his eyes stern as he looked into Gavin's eyes and spoke. "Sometimes, things work out the way you really want and rumor has it there are special awards for kids who do not give up once they are out on their own in the Independent Survival Training Area Zone we put them in. Some people out there really look at those who tough it out, no matter how bad things get, and find a way to deal with it. I have even heard there are bonuses for going to fewer than five resupply locations too."

Gavin cocked his head to the side, "Sir, if making it for three months is all it will take, I don't even know why you had to say anything. Robin won't let us quit!"

Jasper chuckled, "Most of the time I would argue with you, since I have seen the statistics of first year ISTaZ teams. They aren't pretty. However, I have also never seen a report of one team getting three outstanding marks in the first day of testing either, so you guys are already off to a very good start. Just keep it up. Now, what test did you want to take today?"

"Well, I managed to get my first aid so I want to get Wilderness and Emergency First Aid out of the way." Gavin looked up with a grin, "and after I pass it, I want to do the Emergency Communications test."

Jasper burst out laughing, "Man, you guys are getting cocky. Robin must be rubbing off on all of you!"

"Sir, he's been rubbing off on me since the first day I met him. He had us spend our free time last night going over everything we have seen with testing and quizzing each other. We also talked about the traps you guys set up to mess us up. I bet we all pass our first test this morning."

Jasper raised an eyebrow, "So you all think we are trying to set you up for failure?"

"Most of us did, but Robin says we set ourselves up by being lazy. You all just make being lazy easy by how you set up the tests."

Jasper drummed his fingers on his desk for a moment, "So Robin had you all test each for the test you were planning on taking today?"

"Yes… Um, that's not wrong, is it?"

"Not at all, actually it is rather remarkable. We will have to see how this works out for you all today. Now, I have forty three others who need to sign up with me, so get to the mess hall and get a big breakfast and then get your butt to the supply building to grab your supplies. Wilderness First Aid is all on you and whoever takes the test with you. The instructor is just there to grade you all…" Jasper stopped and held up a finger, "So, let me ask you one other thing Gavin."

"Sir?"

"Did you talk over the tests you all took, too?"

"In detail," Gavin nodded. "Robin had all of us compare notes and talk over what mistakes we made. Those of us who failed a test, all know why we failed and it was all stupid things on our parts, because we looked for the quick fix, or out, rather than the proper one. Those who passed, even Robin who is Mr. Outstanding, told us ways he could have done better and pointed out mistakes he made or almost made. It was the whole reason he wanted all of us to take tests we were sure we could pass for the afternoon test session. He wanted to make sure we could all meet as a group last night while most of the others were testing."

"Very resourceful of him, actually of all of you, for listening to him." Jasper nodded his head in some admiration while putting in an order for all the instructors to meet after night testing to find alternate ways to set up the tests for easy failure. "Good luck today, Gavin."

"Thank you, sir…" Gavin paused, "Um, sir, can I ask who the instructor is for my first test?"

Jasper hit a key on his note-puter, "You will be reporting to Mr. O'Mally by hover car four."

Gavin felt his heart race at hearing Robin had gotten the name of the instructor correct. "Let him know I'll be there."

"I sure will," He smiled. "Oh, and send in Jason."

"Okay, sure." Gavin left the office and turned, only to run right into Jason from team fifteen as the boy was walking toward Jasper's office. Gavin felt his jaw drop some as he quickly glanced back to the small building wondering how the man knew. "Um, Mr. Montgomery said to go on in."

The slightly older boy nodded, "Thanks." He stopped, and tapped Gavin on the shoulder. "Can I ask you a question?"

Gavin turned nervously, "Sure."

Jason waved his hand to show he was not trying to be a threat and took a half step back, "Hey, I know some of us are jealous as all hell since your team all passed tests yesterday, but since you did, I'm not above asking for help."

Gavin let out a bit of a sigh of relief, "Okay, if I can, sure."

Jason let out a long uneasy breath, "You and Sara are the only ones who passed the test we took and the rest of us failed yesterday. I pounded the books last night and I came up with a big blank. Did you see what I did wrong?"

Gavin shook his head, "I really wasn't watching you…" Gavin suddenly looked down at the ground and kicked at a rock, "Ah, crap!"

Jason's lips turned slightly downward, "What?"

"It was a team test." Gavin shook his head in disgust, "I would've gotten a much better grade if I had stopped and seen what everyone else was doing and maybe I would've been able to see what you did wrong and could have stopped you. I was so focused on getting the dummy's compound fracture taken care of and doing everything right on my end I didn't even see what my teammates were doing!"

Jason's whole demeanor switched as he smacked his own forehead, "Shit."

By the tone alone Gavin could tell whatever he had just said sparked something within Jason, "What did I miss?"

"Frank opened a sterile, wound closure strip and put it down on the log when the dummy started spurting blood from our arm wound. I watched him do it. He then handed me a strip to cover the wound, after we put on the pressure point ring, and then the two of us used it to close the wound. I bet it was the same strip he put down on the log!"

"Probably," Gavin agreed. "I'm amazed Sara and I passed if we all ended up using the contaminated wound closure strip."

"You two took the leg wound and let us do our thing," Jason let out a long breath of disgust. "We kind of broke into three teams, each taking a serious injury instead of working as one big team, so they probably graded us separately, while taking points off all of us for not being a real team."

Jason patted Gavin on the back, "I was going to do Emergency Comm, but now I'm going to retake First Aid first, and I bet I end up helping someone get an Outstanding."

Gavin grinned, "If I pass my Wilderness First Aid, I'm going to take Emergency Comm after lunch, so let's both pass this morning so we can help each other get an Outstanding after lunch."

"Sounds like a plan!" Jason stated with a hard nod of his head. "Even if you fail this morning, take E Comm so we can help each other."

Gavin gave a thumbs up and nodded, "I'll be there!"

Off to the side, Mr. Allen stood back and watched the exchange, "Damn kids are teaming up on us. This is a new twist."

Back in Robin's tent, the rest of the kids from team five were getting their day going. Ajax glanced over to Robin, "How you feeling?"

"I'm fine, but I'll be eating a very big breakfast and taking some extra rations with me. I want to see if I can force this thing to come on again when I take the potable water test. It seems way too easy, so they must have put something really devious in it to screw us up. I want to see if I can find it in advance."

"Do you want some help to see it?" Oliver spoke up with some hope in his voice.

Robin smiled but shook his head, "Let's save my big ones for the rest of you. I need to work on doing this on my own, too. Hopefully we can do another group one tonight, so I can help you or Ajax."

Ajax took a deep breath, "I'm actually going to do everything in my power to make sure you don't have to go through what you did last night for me. It really kicked your butt!"

"It was kind of draining, or something," Robin admitted. "But, guys, I have been living with this in secret for, like, five years now. Having others I could share it with, and not hate me for it, was incredible. For those few minutes, we were all linked. I want to do it again, and I hope you'll let me."

"I'm in," Fairfax nodded. "It was the coolest thing ever. I think I can still feel some tingling in the center of my brain."

"I know I can," Oliver added. "I've never felt this excited and happy before either. Since, for a brief moment, I could tell you all really don't care I'm gay. I could see Gavin was a little freaked out, but he was still okay with me being me."

"I don't think it's an issue to any of us," Ajax shrugged. "I really don't understand why it would be with anyone else."

"It shouldn't be," Robin sighed. "But, I bet I'm going to have to have another discussion with Randy before we ship out to our zone, especially after we all have outstanding marks."

Ajax moved and sat on the bed next to Robin, "You know, it wouldn't be the worst idea to offer to study with some of the others and help them some. Once we each get an outstanding, it'd be kind of cool to go to the other teams and do a study session. It seems kind of stupid to have everyone in the camp hate us when we should all be working to help each other."

"Great idea," Robin agreed. "I think it would be kind of neat if we all could help out the other teams so this whole camp gets through ISTaZ without anyone dying."

"Good luck trying to talk to Randy's team," Fairfax grumbled.

"Hey, all we can do is offer," Oliver grinned. "But, I'm probably not the one to try to help Randy's group."

"Actually," Robin shot Oliver a sharp glance, "You may be the perfect one for it."

"What?" Oliver gasped, "I really don't want to get my butt kicked."

"Not if we offer to hold it in the mess hall for all who are interested," Robin countered. "I can start things off, at noon today, since I don't have to pass anything today. So even if I fail, I could be there to help others who managed to pass two tests. Whoever passes their morning tests, and wants to, can join me."

"I can skip the afternoon testing as well," Ajax added. "So I can be there too, just in case someone wants to get stupid."

Fairfax stood, "We need to tell Gavin."

"Don't bother," Robin grabbed Fairfax, while shaking his head. "He is dead set on passing two tests today; I felt it when he dressed and slipped out early. He wants to be able to take a full day of down time in case he messes up and doesn't get an Outstanding today."

"Okay," Fairfax sighed, "but there's no way he's going to fail."

"I agree," Robin stood and stretched. "Well, we best go put in for our first tests and eat. Talking about testing is only going to make us all nervous and we all pretty much know what we have to do."

It was pretty clear to everyone in Robin's group the mood was a pretty somber one in the chow hall as they moved through the food line. More than a few kids looked really tired and a few were spending more time chewing on their fingernails than their food. Over half the kids had their note-puters sitting next to them as they ate and many of them tried to fight back yawns and failed to do so.

Jasper, as usual, moved up to the small podium once the last kid had food and was seated. "Kids, I know you all had a short night."

Denny, from Team Seventeen, who was sitting at the next table over from Robin's group rolled his eyes, "Not all of us! Team Five's lights were out when I got back."

Robin heard a few grumbles from a few others, but also noticed more than a few others look over to him and his group with a bit of admiration. Deciding to use this to his advantage he stood, "Mr. Montgomery, before you give us a rundown of what tests are where, can I make an announcement?"

Jasper looked down at his notes with a slight frown, but before he could say anything Mr. Allen spoke up from the instructor table. "The boy's one of us. He's got recruit pins on, may as well let him have his say."

Jasper's whole face changed as he took a step back and nodded to Campbell, "Good point Mr. Allen." Jasper stepped to the side and motioned for Robin to come up, "I give you the floor Recruit."

Robin felt his cheeks flush some as he gulped and stepped forward. As he got to the podium, he paused. He glanced over to Jasper, who had moved back to the instructor table and had taken a seat, "I was going to just do it from down there."

Mr. Allen let out a bit of a cackle, showing his old age, "Boy, you want to speak up, you do so from up here like any other member of the Corps."

Robin shuddered involuntarily and took a couple of deep breaths before he turned to look out over the kids. "Guys, I can tell some of you want to ring my neck and many from my team." He waited while a round of snickers and giggles rolled across the room.

This gave him a bit more heart, which allowed him to smile some. "We got a bit lucky yesterday, but we also think we can help anyone who is interested. Since we had the evening off, we compared notes, and since neither Ajax nor me need to pass any tests today, we're going to offer to hold a group meeting here, both in the afternoon for a couple of hours and the same after dinner. I know some of you can't attend because you have to pass tests, but for those who can, it will be a great time to put our heads together. You can then go back to your teams and let them know what ideas we come up with."

Robin glanced over to see most of the instructors looking over with some shock. Only Mr. Montgomery and Mr. Allen didn't seem overly surprised, but even they seemed a bit taken off guard. Robin paused long enough to fire off a bit off a smirk, then turned back to the kids below. "One other thing, only a few of you didn't pass any tests yesterday, so take your time this morning and watch each other's backs. This isn't some kind of competition between teams on who can pass the most tests the quickest. We all want to go out to our Independent Survival Training Area Zones as best prepared as possible. Even though some of us don't like each other very well, I don't think anyone here wants to hear about anyone in this room dying.

"Actually, I think it would be pretty cool if we all came back for year two as a group so we can hit the far back country, but we have to make it through this year to guarantee a slot for Advanced ISTaZ next year. Just think, while some of your friends will only get to come here once, we can all help each other punch a guaranteed ticket back here next year, to be with the friends we are making. What could be better?"

Seeing he was getting through to most of those who were looking at him, Robin glanced to Jasper with a gleam in his eyes then turned back, "One other thing. I would really like to see us break the record for the most kids to get on Outstanding mark and qualify for the academy. I don't know where the record is now, but if we help each other and really talk over the mistakes we have all made, and even I can see ways I could have done better, we can break it. I, for one, would love to see over half of us arrive next year wearing Explorer Corp cadet uniforms."

Robin moved off to the side as more than a few kids below gave a cheer at the idea. He grinned at Jasper, "Sir, we eagerly await our testing assignments."

Jasper moved back up to the podium while smiling, shaking his head, and playing with his note-puter. "Well, well, well, it seems Robin has thrown down quite a gauntlet for all of you, and us instructors as well. As this has taken me totally off guard, I have to apologize to all of you for not having an answer on what the record for number of kids who have gotten an outstanding mark is."

Jasper glanced over at the instructor table, "Mr. Allen, any idea?"

The old man shook his head, "Can't say I do. Most I have seen is nine and it caused quite a stir. It is the whole reason we now have to have another instructor second any Outstanding grade. On the other hand, we already have two in the first day, and the numbers tend to go up as kids see how the testing works. Since they are throwing us a curveball, and offering to put their heads together, they have a chance of getting to ten or more, but it may make us look bad or soft. I can tell you if we get to ten, any others I'm sending up the chain for confirm directly from Command, but this station tends to be tougher than most, so I'm sure if we give one it will be confirmed by higher."

Robin took a deep breath, "Well, we can beat ten! Anyone who wants to help make sure we do, be here after lunch or dinner, even both. The more information we can pass around the better."

Jasper finished assignments and pulled the instructors aside, "Okay, this is my first year, so let me ask the rest of you, has any kid ever pulled a stunt like this?"

Mr. O'Mally shook his head, "Seventh year for me, boss, and nothin' even close. Hell, normally by the end of the second day of testing we start to see teams break up and run for normal AdventureQuest intake in droves while those who remain scramble to put together new teams. This could change the whole normal dynamic."

"Agreed," Mr. Allen chewed on a pipe with some worry. "There is a possible down side to this, too. We could end up sending out teams who should not be going out. Randy and his squad shouldn't be allowed to set foot on a Survival Training Area Zone and we all know it. One of them kids is gunna end up dead for sure."

Japer let out a long breath. "Okay, well, we will have to go with what we have set for today, and see if the afternoon meeting helps. If we see too many passing the evening tests we'll have to sit down and burn some midnight oil to figure out ways to tighten up the tests while still being fair. Also, Gavin told me his whole team went over all the mistakes they made, so don't be terribly surprised if we end up giving out a few more Outstanding marks today. Be fair to them. At least Fairfax is retaking a test, so we don't have to worry about him."

"Yeah, but I watched Gavin and Jason talking," Mr. Allen snorted, "and they are planning on teaming up on one of us after lunch on E. Comm. The two of them already put their heads together and know why we failed Jason and Frank."

"So do you want E. Comm this afternoon?" Jasper glanced over to Mr. Allen with a questioning look.

Mr. Allen snickered, "Sure, besides, if I give an Outstanding on E. Comm, after what happened to my team after we landed on this rock, it might cause a few jaws to drop all the way back to Dal-Houston!"

As the group of instructors broke up, Gavin watched with growing nervousness as Mr. O'Mally started punching buttons on his note-puter. A moment later Gavin's puter lit up with the details of the class. He read through it, guessing the whole thing was fake, but astonished at how much detail had been put in. They were actually acting like a rescue team for someone who had activated their emergency beacon. It would be up to those in the group to properly handle the problem and set the victim for extraction. The topographic map told them where the signal was coming from and even showed where the lander would have to set down, since the actual location was too rocky for the lander to fly them in closer.

The actual fight to the location was quick. Mr. O'Mally expertly set down right where the briefing said he would and he turned to the kids in the back, "You all saw your assignment since I downloaded it. You may as well all start pretending I am not here, because I will not say another word, even if asked, once I pop the doors."

He didn't even wait for a response. Instead he turned and activated the side doors while he pulled out a headset recording unit, activated it and hopped out of the front.

Adrienne let out a long breath, "Well, we got a three kilometer hike and I assume we have to do this as fast as possible so let's move."

Sara glanced back and shook her head. "Hold up a sec, Robin got two Outstandings yesterday and told us to think before we did anything. What are we missing?"

Gavin let out a long breath as he saw something Robin's vision had not, "If we leave the doors open we could come back to a lander with some Zong animals in it, for one."

Jared, from team Seventeen nodded, "Yeah! Good catch." He reached in and hit the button to secure the small craft. "Who has the best land nav skills?"

"Me," Adrienne stated without hesitation, "I passed it last night too."

"Then take the lead and get us there," Frank next to demanded.

"But, take it easy so we can all back you up," Jared spoke up. "If we go straight across, you will take us through the geothermal formations and those are dangerous. We should bank around to the south and follow the ravine up."

"I was planning on it, but it's a good catch."

Gavin stayed quiet, until he saw Adrienne move up to the ravine and glance down. She shook her head and turned, "This takes us there, but it's way too steep here. We need to…" She yelped as she took a step back and slid down the side, disappearing from view.

Instantly, Sara and Jared jumped forward while Frank bit back a curse about already failing.

Jared's eyes got wide as he looked down, "She's hurt!"

Sara's eyes went to Mr. O'Mally, "Sir?"

Mr. O'Mally grabbed his radio, reported in, and let the kids hear the response from Jasper.

Jaspers voice sounded a bit confused, but he regained his calm quickly, "Look, we are all out on tests and you are in a zone we can't land in. You are there so you will have to get her out with an air extraction. Cancel your pervious test and use this. It's the best we can do."

Jared saw a way down and moved.

"Jared, Stop!" Gavin shouted.

"What? She's hurt!"

"And going down through lizard mounds is a good way for us to need two rescues, instead of one!" Gavin pointed to the multitude of mounds not far from where Jared was moving toward.

Jared held up both hands and came to an abrupt halt. His eyes got wide, as he whistled and backed away.

Sara moved up and patted Jared on the back. "Great catch, Gavin!" She then scanned the area, "Over there!"

Gavin carefully surveyed the area and nodded, "Looks good. I'll go first. Jared, Frank, either of you have a rifle?"

Jared shook his head, "Failed my test yesterday and don't even know why. What do we need a rifle for?"

Sara pointed back to the mounds, "Those, just in case."

"Well, I have a stunner since I haven't taken Rifle Testing yet," Frank grumbled, as he pulled his out of his pack. "I'll keep watch."

Gavin paused as he remembered Robin's instructions. "Sara, see if Adrienne can talk and let her know we're coming. Jared, I'm dropping my pack so I can get down without killing myself. Can you lower yours and mine with a rope and join me?"

"I'm on it!" the young teen moved quickly.

Gavin moved up the ravine and shook his head as he got to the girl. Everything about her position and condition was exactly like Robin had foreseen, except the blood sure looked real and her ankle looked puffy. "She's got a stick in her and I think she twisted her ankle, too. Um, I know we aren't supposed to move her, but her head is awful close to the water and as cold as it is, we can't let her get wet."

"Wait for Jared and then move her to a safe zone," Sara stated with a great deal of concern. "How deep is it, Gavin?"

"Can't tell, but I think if we tape it in place and… Her rescue beacon is broken."

"I'll hit mine…" Jared started to reach down.

"No!" Gavin shouted, "These things can give the med station readings! I'll stick mine on her."

"Rule one," Frank finally spoke up, "Never remove your beacon."

Sara shook her head, "No, I think Gavin is right. The med station is going to need to know what is going on. Do it Gavin."

Jared, who had moved up next to Gavin, opened his pack and pulled out his medi-kit. "Mr. O'Mally, let the crew know of the switch and tell them I'm going to need a new one! Since we are going to get an extraction, and one of ours is broken, we would have to send for a replacement anyway."

Jared leaned over to pull Adrienne's necklace to read off her id number and stopped. He turned back to Gavin and patted him on the shoulder, "Stop, she's wearing a blood pack!"

"What!" Sara shouted in outrage, "This was a set up?"

"Maybe it was," Gavin let out a long breath, "but unless she has something on her ankle to make it swell up, she is still hurt."

Adrienne sat up and pulled the blood pack from under her shirt. "No, I twisted it when I fell."

Mr. O'Mally cringed and moved up to the edge and looked down, "You should have said something."

"It isn't too bad and I didn't want to let all your planning go to waste."

Gavin held up both hands, took a breath. "Okay, we're still going to need to go by the book on this. At least you aren't really bleeding so I don't need to glove up and junk. I'm still going to give her my beacon, so the med station can get a reading for the extraction team. Jared, help me move her away from the water."

Adrienne shook her head, "Help me out of here and let's see if they can treat me back at camp. If I get a real extraction I'm done and I want this."

"Mr. O'Mally?" Sara looked up to the instructor.

"No, we do an extraction and I will sign off as it being my fault. If they can get you back to us by end of the day tomorrow, we'll grant an exception. They may even be able to treat and drop you off back at camp, if it really isn't bad, Adrienne."

Less than twenty minutes later a VTOL Craft came in, lowered a stretcher and pulled Adrienne up for treatment.

Mr. O'Mally watched the craft depart before he turned to all four kids. "Well, you all passed; the exact grades I am going to take for review. But I can tell you I am going to recommend two Outstanding marks. I don't see any way Gavin's won't get accepted and Sara, the only reason yours might not is because you didn't actually go down to do any treatment on Adrienne."

"Not fair," Gavin countered, "She did what we needed and what I asked her to do!"

Mr. O'Mally held up both hands, "I agree, which is why she is getting my recommendation. We will have to see what the others do with it. Jared, I am planning on putting you down for an excellent with a dual review for a possible outstanding."

Jared let out a huge sigh as his shoulders drooped, "The lizard mounds, right?"

"Yeah," Mr. O'Mally patted the disheartened boy on the back, "but you did stop the second they were pointed out and this is a team thing, so if you do get bumped, which is very possible, you have Gavin to thank for it. The rest of what you did was perfect, and I didn't expect anyone to go for her ID and find the blood pack, so you do get a serious thumbs up from me. Furthermore, as long as you make it through the rest of the testing, I will offer to give you a letter of recommendation for an academy scholarship if you want to apply, and I bet after other instructors see this, they will be willing to do the same."

Mr. O'Mally then turned to Frank with some disapproval. "You passed, but boy, your attitude stinks. You were more worried about failing than Adrienne from the start. On the other hand, you pulled your head out of you rear and did provide protection and you chimed in about the beacon. It is enough, but just barely. Your whole team needs to stop being so selfish, and it certainly wouldn't hurt for you to attend one of the get-togethers Robin has planned."

Even though Frank looked a bit angry, he did manage to nod, "Okay, point taken." He then managed to send a slight grin over to Gavin, "I'm still pissed about Dal-Houston, but without you, we would a blown this whole thing, so I'm willing to call it good," he offered his hand.

Gavin took a deep breath and accepted it, "Man, let's forget about the past. Show up at the class tonight and we can really kick some butt on the rest of this testing week."

"You not going to be there is afternoon?"

Jared shook his head, "Nope, he and Jason are going to try to do what we just did here for the Emergency Comm test. Jason told me about it during breakfast."

Frank glanced over to Gavin, "I don't know exactly what we did wrong to only get a passing yesterday, but when we first tried to set off a message, we couldn't send up a signal, and simply moving to high ground and setting everything up right all over again only got first timers an average grade. The rest of us got a Passing. The first time we failed and they didn't tell us why."

"Wow," Gavin cringed as he jumped in the vehicle. "Tell me about it on the fight back and I'll tell you everything I know about the rifle course."

Mr. O'Mally couldn't help but shake his head as he powered up the lander. With cooperation like he was seeing they would really have to crank up the pressure of all the remaining tests.
