"That is all I can pay," replied my father. Turning to the tehsildar, he asked, "Tehsildar Sahib, this is what I always pay." The munshi then became angry at my father. Sitting on his knees in front of the tehsildar, the Pandoo then submissively kissed his feet and said, "Tehsildar Sahib, this impudent man is not showing you the proper respect you deserve, and I have found from his files that he is hiding his real income and paying less taxes! Sahib, let me talk to this Aadmi in one of the rooms, and I am sure I will extract all his secret money." "If he is hiding money from the Caliphate, then that is a crime! Yes, please do talk to him!" replied the tehsildar. The munshi then bowed obsequiously and salaamed the tehsildar. He ordered the Shudra Koollee to take my father into a room. The strong Shudra Koollee (labourer) effortlessly pulled my protesting father into a room, followed by the scheming Pandoo, who then locked the door. The Pandoo Munshi and the Shudra Goonda spend a long time with my fahter in that room. What happened inside, I do not know, but when the door opened, my father came out a transformed man. His hair was ruffled as he covered his mouth with his hand, and he quickly let the house without a word. The Pandoo munshi came out right behind him, beaming in triumph and with a wide smile embellishing his broad white face. Following him came the Shudra Goonda, who was busy tying his lungi (loin-cloth). Striding over to the tehsildar, the munshi went onto his knees in front of the divan and bosoed (kissed) the tehsildar's feet. "Tehsildar Sahib, the Showhar has agreed that he was secretly hiding income from us. After I applied my skillful interrogation techniques, he was no longer able to hide any of his money. He admitted to everything," exclaimed the Pandoo Munshi. Pausing for a while, he then continued, "I collected whatever I could. But he cannot pay us as he has hidden the rest of his wealth in a remote and secret location.
