Now there was a severe rivalry between the cavalry and the piyadas (infantry) in the Lashkar. The cavalry men were generally skilled and educated, while the infantry demanded only physical strength. This rivalry was exacerbated by racial differences. That is because the cavalry mostly comprised Aryan races. This included the Deccanis, that is the Deccani Muslims and Marathas, as well as the immigrant Iranis and Rajputs. In contrast, the infantry was dominated by Kalas, namely Shudras, Telingas, Dravidians and Habshees. [&] What made this rivalry worse was that there were only few Kalis (black women) for the Piyadas, for many of the Kalas were male immigrants from different Dravidian lands. But most of the cavalry had their Aurats. As a result, a fierce competition broke out for the favours of us fair Aryanis between the Safeds and the Kalas. This rivalry extended beyond the normal Tawaifs (whores) to the married Bibis (wives) as well. I, like most other Aryanis, attracted many Kalas. What irked many of the Safedoos was that the Kalloos were very successful with the Aurats. To make it worse, some of the Aurats seemed to prefer the Kalloos over the Safedoos. My own Shohwar always became upset when he saw an Aryani with a Dravida, and would call her a "haramzadi". As my ancestors came from Iran several generations back, my skin is very fair, like peaches, and is set off by my dark hair. One of the Bibis then replied that the Aryan Lunds had contracted over Hazaro Sal (thousands of years) in the cold northern climates where our Aryan ancestors had come from. In contrast, she said, the Shudra Lunds had expanded, growing big and Kala in the hot and warm Dravidian lands. That is why, she explained, the Shudra Lund was so much bigger and better than the Aryan Lund. One of the Bibis told me there was a dhaba on the border of the cavalry and infantry houses, and that is where cavalry Aryan Bibis went to meet Kala Lashkari Piyadas (foot-soldiers). Then one Bibi said, "Once a Ravanoo, no more Ramoo!" and they all laughed. I did not understand what they said, but smiled shyly. I thought about what I heard for several days. I kept thinking about the Shudra Lashkaris and kept wondering how big they were. Ultimately, I decided that I had to try a Shudra Lashkari. While I did not necessarily believe that they were larger than our men, I wanted to see if it was true or not. So I went to the dhaba one night, of course covered up in a concealing veil about my face. One Shudra Lashkari came to me at the dhaba. Over our food, I came to know that he called himself Ravana. I asked him why so many of the Dravidian Lashkaris named themselves after Ravana, and he said that the Shudras were proud of Ravana, and claimed descent from him. Then, with a naughty smile, he said that those Shudras who liked to take away Aryan Bibis were called Ravanas, as the Kala Dravidian King Ravana in the Ramayana and Ravayana had taken away the fair Bibi Sita of Rama. That is when I remembered what one of the Bibis had said, "Once a Ravanoo, no more Ramoo!" After hearing Ravana talk, that saying made sense. Ravana's talk made me garm and even more curious.
