A learned priest hailing from the famous Brahmin strong-hold of Poona, this was his first trip to the strange and exotic Islamicized lands of the Indus and Ganges valleys. He was surprised to find that nudity was common-place in the hammams (bath-houses), and was totally acceptable to the otherwise prudish Muslims. For Pandit Sarvarkar, this contrasted sharply with the thick burqas (veils) worn in public, and only made the scene more erotic.
