Chapter 23

Examine every day for opportunities.
Each day should be lived in such a way that you can find cause for liberation, transformation and celebration. These are the keys unlocking the doors to growth, fulfilment and happiness.
Look for them constantly. Don't let them pass you by. The greatest sadness is in not recognizing the value of something until it has become a memory.

I was sipping a cup of coffee and talking with Barry as the door to the conference room opened. I admitted to myself that I was very curious as to how Jack handled his first formal meeting.

I'd made it quite clear that he needed to establish himself as my son and formal representative. Therefore, he needed to become the dominant presence in these meetings.

He'd responded by telling me that he felt so strongly about this issue that it wouldn't be a problem.

As he self-assuredly escorted the twelve 'experts' out of the room and down the hall while carrying on relaxed conversations, I realized that he had done that with total self-confidence and complete control. I looked forward to talking to him later.

Though he wasn't born a Tucker, he was certainly acting as one.

I realized that knowing great wealth and power were behind them gave my boys strength but their nest upbringing gave them wisdom and a sense of personal worth. The idea of being arrogant or self-centered was a concept far beyond anything they might consider.

Having said that, though, they were never going to allow themselves to be bull shitted or manipulated. They would listen and they would consider but they would not be bulldozed or conned into making a decision. It was their nature and I hoped that if things worked out, some of those attributes would rub off on Brian as well.

I could tell from the expression on his face that the meeting had gone quite well from Jack's perspective. I waved him over and pulled him into a quick hug. "Well son, did you put them on the right track?"

He didn't even smile he looked me in the eye and said, "Absolutely Dad… I didn't give them the chance to begin to waltz me around. If they were here for some sweet meeting 'hosted' by some innocent little kid who didn't have a clue, I think I took them by surprise."

' I looked them each in the eye and described the horror, the fear, and the confusion for all of us out on those life rafts and I told them clearly that none of that needed to have happened. Even if we'd received no training (which of course, we hadn't), a life raft is a simple enough contraption that it's operation and the operation of the amenities on board should be well explained and obvious."

"Hell Dad, it took us a whole day to locate the emergency rations and water and I only figured out how to use the GPS device by accident. The raft had a motor that none of us knew how to use and if it had rained, we wouldn't have known how to erect the shelter that was contained right in the raft. Actually the raft was perfect; it's interface with the traumatized occupants was miserable."

"Dad, it was as if we were starving men in the desert, who had a full carton of canned food and no can opener or any other way to open the cans."

"That shouldn't have happened. We should have known how to operate the GPS and been rescued that first day. These guys are going to fix all that Dad or I'm not signing off on this project and I'll tell you that NOTHING with Dr. Chambers' name will ever be less than perfect."

Richard entered the room while this discussion was going on and he smiled at us both as he gripped Jack's arm. "Jack it's really too bad that you've made up your mind to be 'Johnny Ocean' because you'd have made one hell of a Skuggor."

Jack smiled and said, "Don't rule that out yet guys. You know how us teenagers are. We can always change our minds."

I looked quickly at Richard and we exchanged glances. We didn't say a word but the surprise was certainly there for both of us.

"Well now Jacamo, it seems to me that you've done a great day's work. We don't keep beer up here but my study isn't such a long walk. Join us Richard. I'll bet Barry can handle the COM.

Richard and Barry exchanged glances and Barry smiled over at me. "Wolfman and Brutus are relieving me in an hour and Chris will be waiting over at our pool to continue my diving lessons."

Richard slapped his hand onto the table and grinned. "I hate to admit it but with Chris' help, this long drink of water is getting pretty damned good. One of these days, we'll have to have a contest. Are you in for it Jack?"

The red headed boy smiled a bit forlornly. "Nah, that's Sean and Chris and now' it would seem Barry's thing. Even if I was into it, this ear situation would rule it out."

"I forgot Jack. I'm so sorry."

"It's no big deal Richard. I truly wasn't into diving. I'd sure like to be able to play water polo but even that's not OK. Now… Dad, were you joking about that beer?"

I smiled and laughed as did Richard and we got up from our chairs and marched the red- haired wonder to the elevator. "Happy diving Barry. I'm sorry you can't join us." I called out.

He grinned and waved. "No worries Boss. Cracking open a few cold ones is a very important part of Chris' teaching method."

***

"I'm very proud of you Jack."

He smiled as he sipped his Stone IPA and walked over to the fireplace. We'd decided to go to the library instead of my study and he turned around and faced me.

He reached into the collar of his white long sleeved oxford cloth shirt and he retrieved his two pendants.

First, he held his blazing green emerald. "Richard, this is how Dad first told me that he cared about me… loved me."

"Later when he'd asked me to become his son, Professor Swaim gave me this gold pendant. It's identical to Dad's and Sean's. It's the symbol of our love and our family. What's engraved into this golden oval is also carved into the mantel of this fireplace. They are words chosen by the great-grandfather that I've inherited by adoption but who I truly somehow hope knows about me and who is proud of me. I don't know, I just hope so… I believe so Richard."

"'Noli Timere' it's Latin and it means; 'Do Not be Afraid'. I'm a Tucker Richard and I'm not afraid of anything. If you guys think I should be a Skuggor… well, we'll talk about that and if I choose to do that, get ready for the idea that I'll be your replacement, Richard. We know that Sean is the future 'Lancelot' but who knows? I just may be the future 'Galahad'."

Once again, Richard and I exchanged glances.

I tipped my glass as the amber sunlight slipped through the blinds covering the big windows. I realized that I was content with how things were growing in my household and my extended 'family'. I raised my almost empty glass to Jack and then the Richard.

"I've got a rather long meeting scheduled with Uncle Phil. Why don't you two go play some pool in the game room until the little guys are out of school?"

"Later you can have fun at the pool but… Richard I suppose I should let you know that these boys swim completely natural so… if you choose to join them, you'll be faced with a dilemma."

Richard's smile was as wide as his face. "So then Eric, what kind of Director of Security do you suppose I'd be if I didn't know that you and the boys skinny dip in your pool? Of course, I also know that so do Chris, Garry Sellers and his son Bobby. Is there anyone else you'd like to add to your list before I add myself?"

"I love swimming naked and I've done it for most of my life. After I beat Jack's ass at a game or two of nine-ball, I'll be happy to join him in the swimming pool and I'll be glad to be buck-naked."

"The only reason we don't swim naked all of the time at the new pool down by the condominiums, is Phil. He's a bit of an old-fashioned prude and we don't want to offend him. Therefore, we all only drop our trow after Phil has gone to sleep. Don't worry, it all works out."

***

Uncle Phil and I finished our meeting and we'd laid out a plan for an exciting new financial enterprise in Belize that was certain to be profitable to us but also very beneficial to that small and very third-world country.

We sat at the end of our deliberations sipping our drinks. "You miss Walter a great deal don't you?"

He gave a sad little smile and replied, "Eric, you're too young to understand what Walter, your father and I did. Everything that is now 'Magnus Veritas" is based upon what we built originally and now that you are expanding it so successfully and so capably; well yes, I'm sad that I haven't got someone to share it all with."

"Don't get me wrong, though, I'm happy and content. I feel that the young hands you've brought on-board will more than capably move you into the future. The fact is that I'm lonely Eric. I miss Walter and I miss your Father. Only time will heal that wound."

"I certainly wish I could do something to make that better. Is the fact that all of the others in residence at the Condo are so much younger a problem for you?"

He broke into a broad grin. "Fact is Eric; I wish they wouldn't think of me as so old. I watch them swimming naked after they think I've gone to bed and I would like it a hell of a lot better if they felt comfortable doing that in front of me."

I giggled and said, "Well shit, Uncle Phil, why don't you just tell them or, better yet, why don't you just jump bare-assed into the poll? I suspect that they'll get the idea."

He flashed me a wonderful smile. "Walter has visited you hasn't he?"

I shot straight up in my chair. "What…?"

He smiled warmly. "Don't worry Son, he visits me a lot and he told me he was going to start visiting you. I don't know if it's real or just a dream but the conversations certainly seem to be real."

"Just last night he told me, that Jack was going to change his life's direction and become involved in the Skuggor. Doesn't that sound strange? I'm going to keep believing that it's real. It feels better that way."

We both stood and I embraced him. I of course remembered Jack's earlier comments.

"So, perhaps he was teasing me about Jack becoming a scientist because he knows Jack will become involved something else? The Skuggor perhaps?"

"Perhaps."

"Thanks Uncle Phil."

"No, thank YOU Eric." He said softly. We both left the room and went separate ways.

***

I slept very well cuddled closely by Sean and Brian. We'd simply snuggled and enjoyed being close to each other.

I slid into wakefulness blinking at the wheat gold morning sun as it peaked between the blinds.

Pissing became an almost instant prerogative and I carefully climbed out of the cage of little boy limbs that encased me.

"Hi Dad, soon as you're finished can I use the toilet?"

I smiled down at Brian. "Well, you're a pretty regular feller aren't you?"

"I can't help it."

"Well of course you can't Brian. That's how your body works. Seems like you're scheduled to poo in the morning just as I'm scheduled to pee. I just think that pooing is a very personal thing. I think you need some privacy and I need a cup of coffee. See you in a little bit."

He gave me a happy smile as I left the bathroom.

My baby boy was rolling into wakefulness and so. I entered the little kitchen area and got the coffee maker fired up. By the time I had three cups ready; one black and two with milk and sugar, I heard happy little voices bantering about in the main bedroom.

"Do you suppose there could be a more wonderful way to start the day then to share a cup of coffee with two naked boys?" I asked as I handed them their mugs.

They stared at me for a second as what I'd said sunk in and then broke out into delightful fits of giggles and drank their morning coffee.

After a very enjoyable shower, we dressed and came down to hug Martha and eat a wonderful breakfast.

Jack looked at me from his side of the table. "Dad, I haven't gone behind your back or anything. I've only checked with Daniel first to make certain it's all right; so now, I'm asking you if you'd mind if I invite Amanda to Sean's party and yes… she would be spending the night."

I couldn't help but smile and feel regretful at the same time. I'd acted so badly the last time he attempted this liaison.

"Jack, if her parents are all right with that, then your parent is as well."

"Thanks Dad."

Breakfast finished, I scooted the boys off to class and then walked out to the carport for a ride in the newly refurbished Morgan. John was standing next to the beautiful little machine and his smile glowed so strongly that the dimples in his chin almost looked painful.

"Eric, it purrs like a little kitten. I just love it. Hop in and let's go."

I looked at him quite seriously. "John, you've done all the work on this little girl so, you are the one to take it out for its first long drive. I'm just the passenger."

With a big Grin he said, "Well I'm not going to argue, Eric. Hop in and let's see what this old girl can do."

In less than fifteen minutes, we were both grinning from ear to ear and nodding and waving appreciatively at passing cars and pedestrians who smiled and waved in complimentary fashion at our vehicle.

"Let's stop at Deegan's for a beer and a burger John."

"I'm all for that Eric." the dimples on his cheeks showed like bright pennies. "There's actually something I want to talk to you about anyway."

I got a sudden sick feeling in my stomach. "Oh John, please don't tell me that you guys are going to leave me."

My big friend burst out laughing. "No Eric you jerk! How or why could I ever leave Joyous Gaurde? The fact is that we're going to be populating the estate. Let me pull over and I'll tell you."

He found a wide space in the road and brought the little car to a halt, He turned to me with a gigantic grin. "We weren't going to tell anyone but my parents until after Sean's birthday party but the fact is, it turns out we're pregnant."

I felt a rush of excitement and then I leaned over and pulled him into a hug. "John, what wonderful news! Are your parents excited?"

He grinned. "They're just going nuts Eric. I'll never be able to thank you for everything you and your father before you have done for my family but you better know that I'll always be here for you."

"Thanks John. God bless you guys. I can't wait for the little munchkin to arrive. That will certainly be exciting for all of us Joyous Guardians."

He smiled and patted my arm. "That's great Eric because you might as well know that we're going to ask you to be the Godfather."

I smiled back at him and said, "I'd be delighted John and you and Jenny should know I'd take that duty seriously."

John reached over and took my right wrist. "We know that Eric. There's no man in the world we'd trust more."

After a few moments of happy chatter, he put the little roadster into gear and rather shortly, we were doing some serious damage to large bacon cheeseburgers, stacks of thick cut fries and onion rings enhanced by a couple of ice cold beers.

I think we spent as much time giggling as we did eating but we certainly did eat.

Deegan's is perched at the top of a steep hill with a little dirt path out back that leads down to the river. I purchased two six packs of cold beer and John and I walked down to the riverbank and found ourselves a couple of comfortable seats on an old fallen tree.

We spent our first two beers reminiscing about my Dad, my mother and my brother.

Our third beer was a slow examination of the entry of Sean, Jack and now (seemingly) Brian into the life of the estate.

Our fourth beer was in joyful conversation about the new prince or princess he and Jenny would be bringing into our lives and (being slightly loopy) I kept wondering if I could keep Doc Swaim on duty to educate the new little kid.

Turned out that the due date was sometime around the middle of March.

Finishing that, we both wandered casually off to piss off the hill. We were both giggling heavily by then and, as I cracked open our fifth beer, I pulled out my cell phone and called Daniel.

My big butler very quickly confirmed that Arlen could work the gearshift on the Morgan and that they would both be arriving to rescue us in about twenty minutes.

With a grin, I turned to John and offered him his last beer. We sort of slouched into a friendly hug and sat against each other looking down at the river.

I suppose we'd both fallen asleep quickly because the next thing I knew, Daniel was there gently raising me to my feet. Arlen was helping John into the Lexus as well, though I don't know how he was managing it.

"Thanks Daniel. I guess we got carried away and…"

"Eric, the important thing is that you were smart enough to call me. John, your wife is going to be really pissed off at you."

***

I woke up groggily sometime in the middle of the night. It didn't take me long to realize Sean was sharing my bed. The fact was he was entwined around my body like a little kudzu vine.

It was the night before his birthday party and I was suddenly sad I'd not been there for him although I didn't regret my celebration with John over his wonderful news.

I got up from the bed so as not to wake him and walked over looking out of the big window. It seemed as if the moonlight was particularly bright this night and the large lawn and deep forest had a glitter that was almost artificial… like something from Disneyworld.

As I gazed upon the beautiful landscape, I felt his little arms wrap themselves around my chest. "Sean, I didn't mean to wake you up son."

He snaked himself around my body and smiled up at me. "We should go down for a swim Dad."

"We should go down and enjoy this almost silver moonlight, little man, as long as you're up for it but remember today is your party and I don't want you to be too tired."

He took me by the hand. Sometimes Sean expressed his feelings physically more than he did with words. Naked, he led me down the dark hall, to the elevator and eventually out the back door.

We made our way around the garden and the hedge and quietly slipped into the pool. Once we were in, we paddled to the middle and I pulled him toward me and kissed him deeply.

"You are my world, little man. If it weren't for you, nothing that I value would exist. Every day I wake up I'm so thankful that you came into my life and today is the party celebrating your birthday and the day you became my wonderful son."

He looked up at me. The droplets of water on his long dark lashes were almost as if they were tiny diamonds or perhaps upside down tears but there was certainly no sadness on his countenance; it was pure happiness.

"Eric… Dad, nothing that will ever happen in my life will be more important than the day you picked me, brought me home, and taught me to love. I'm happy for my party today but the truth is, every day with you is a party an' I love you so much."

I smiled deeply at him. "Well Sean, as much as I'm enjoying the silver moonlight interlude, we can't have you being too tired for your party so, I'm going to do something I love to do and then it's back to bed."

I'd slowly been guiding him to the edge of the pool and now, I grasped his waist, raised him up, and sat him on the edge. I took hold of his knees, spread his legs, and hungrily took his little rod in between my lips.

He was like silk… almost like caramel as I worked him into pleasure. He bucked and writhed as he exploded trying so hard not to make too much noise.

When he'd finished, I kissed him and got up out of the pool and together we made our way back to the bedroom.

I hugged him to me fiercely and we both fell asleep quickly.

***

It almost didn't seem fair but it was Sean's turn. I ran my hand down his wet little ass as the music began. He thought he had me but he hadn't. Before the singing even began, I recognized the piano styling of Vince Dooley [see note click here at the end of the chapter 24].

"Are you still going to be a great kid as time goes by?"

He grinned up at me because he knew I'd gotten it. Soon the shower was filled with the vocals.

You must remember this
A kiss is just a kiss
A sigh is just a sigh.
The fundamental things apply
As time goes by.

He grinned up at me and said, "Member what comes next? 'Moonlight and love songs never out of date.' Didn't we kina do that?"

I nuzzled his hair as I drew him into a hug. "Yes, we certainly did that my Sean. We certainly did that."

***

The guest began arriving around one o'clock and Sean was the perfect host greeting each one happily and accepting his gifts with gratitude.

In the end, Sean had decided to invite all of the original 'Seven Swimming Samurai' as well as a few members from his baseball team. All of our Joyous Gaurde 'family' was here as were Ricky and Many flown up from Houston by Captain Lucas.

I exchanged pleasantries with the families of Sean's teammates and introduced them to other guests and by about two thirty we had quite a lively gathering going on. The kids and even some of the adults spent most of the time horsing around in the pool. At some times, even an Olympic sized pool doesn't seem large enough.

Daniel's staff did a fantastic job of circulating and keeping everyone's glass filled. Although my big butler never stopped keeping a watchful eye on the staff, I'd insisted that he was a guest at this party and I expected him to behave as one.

I'd once again hired the wonderful Santa Rosa Barbeque caterer to handle the food and by around three o'clock, the enticing smells were getting everyone's attention.

Soon, we were all sitting at tables out on the big lawn with fingers and chins sticky from the wonderful sauce that made the tri-tip-beef so wonderful and the ribs so tangy.

Just as I'd finished my second helping, Captain Lucas came over to me. "Will is here Eric. Do you want to introduce him to Sean?"

"No, let's both do it." I rose from the table and recognized the sandy-haired young man standing by the pool.

As we walked over, I extended my hand. "Hello Will. I'm happy to see you again. Would you like to meet the birthday boy or would you rather have something to eat first?"

He grinned and said, "Mr. Tucker, I think I should meet my new student and then, frankly, I wouldn't mind a beer and a plate of those great looking ribs."

I clapped him on the shoulder and Captain Lucas and I escorted him to the table where Sean sat surrounded by all of the other boys. "Sean, would you come with us so that you can meet the man who's going to teach you to fly?"

I suddenly realized that he must not have told any of his sports friends because their big table became completely silent and all the young men looked at Sean, then me then Captain Lucas and finally at Will Fletcher before looking at Sean again.

"Teach you to FLY Sean?" Bulldog said it.

Sean giggled. "Like in an airplane dummy. I'm not getting super powers."

I guided the boy away from the other guests and Will Fletcher smiled and extended his hand. "Hello Sean. I'm Will and I guess we're going to get to know each other pretty well. Don't be nervous about anything, I actually started flying at about your age and, if I say so myself, I'm a darned good instructor."

Captain Lucas smiled and said, "I can vouch for that Sean, I've known Will for a long time and besides, I'll be going up with you a lot just so that you can log your hours. The three of us are going to have a lot of fun."

"Thanks Captain Lucas… thanks Will… by the way, I'm glad to meetcha… I'm so excited I can't hardly wait!"

Will looked at me and Captain Lucas. "Does he know?"

I shook my head. "No not yet. It will come later. Let's get you fed Will. Sean, why don't you excuse yourself from your friends for a while and come sit with us and get to know Will… ask him any questions you have but PLEASE let the man eat."

We three adults laughed and Sean just looked puzzled. Little boys don't understand how disruptive their constant chatter can sometimes be.

Before the birthday cake was presented and cut, Sean was called to the front to open his presents. They were all thoughtful and well appreciated.

There were some video games, lots of sports related equipment and, for the few who were aware, aviation related gifts.

Gary and Bobby gave him six wonderful aviator shirts with double pockets and epaulets. Doc Swaim gave him a high quality pair of aviator style sunglasses and Jack and Brian had (with my help), purchased him a Swiss made aviator's chronometer.

As the last of the gifts were opened, I felt a rumble in my stomach and I rose to my feet. "Well, I suppose it's time for my present Sean. Captain Lucas is going to help me give it to you."

The two men presented Sean with a relatively large box. After a bit of effort the wrapping was removed and my little boy held up a wonderfully crafted model airplane.

The kid was obviously surprised especially since it soon became obvious, it wasn't a remote control flyable model.

Will Fletcher leaned down and said, "That's a Cessna 182T Sean. It's exactly like the one that you'll be learning to fly right down to the blue over white paint job."

Sean's eyes grew wide.

"So you've even picked out the plane I'm gonna learn on?"

Captain Lucas was grinning as he said, "More than that Sean, you're going to learn to fly on your own plane and this is a scale model of the one your father has bought you."

It took a few moments for this to register with the boy though most of the guests picked up on it quicker. Finally, though, his little body shook and his shoulders began to heave. Realizing what was happening, Captain Lucas gently took the model plane from his hand and the little boy rushed over and threw his arms around me.

"D-Dad… you're giving me an airplane for my birthday?" He buried his face into my chest and as his shoulders heaved, he was making little squeaking noises as he tried not to embarrass himself.

I rubbed his back and whispered softly, "It's at the airport. We'll go there tomorrow and Will has agreed to take us up for a spin. He even says you'll take the controls for a while. It only seats four so until you're old enough to get your license, as long as Brian is with us you can't take us all up at the same time. That means it will be a while before you fly us up to the cabin at Osso Largo." I squeezed him and he squealed.

"After you see it tomorrow, you've got to name it and it's yours. Sorry that it's blue and white instead of red and white but I wanted to make sure I had it here in time."

He pulled me close and whispered, "D-Dad, I think I got snot all over your shirt."

Laughing, I picked him up and carried him over to my chair. "Sit on my lap for a while and hide it."

Suddenly Chris was standing up in front of everyone with his banjo.

"Ladies and gentlemen, how about instead of 'Happy Birthday' we greet the future aviator with a different anthem? If you don't know this song, you'll catch on quickly…"

He began a quick folky finger picking and sang,

Up in the air Junior Bird Man.
Up in the air upside down.
Up in the air Junior Bird Man.
With your feet both planted firmly on the ground.

Whenever you hear Bird Men calling.

Blowing on their whistles made of tin.
That is how you know that Junior Bird Men
have been mailing all their box tops in.

Doc Swaim and then Tim (John's father) quickly jumped in with their own versions of the song but they all joined together with a crazy harmonic sign off;

It only takes five box tops,
three labels, two wrappers
and one thin dime. D-I-M-E dime.

Martha had insisted that she and Jenny were going to make the cake and when they wheeled it out, it was nothing short of spectacular. I helped him stand up on the stool that was required for him to blow out his candles and he took the first cut into it.

As the afternoon progressed, I gathered that his friends considered him one lucky guy while he acted nonchalant and stunned at the pleasure of his life. He found numerous occasions to find me, embrace and kiss me and then scamper off to enjoy his friends.

Will left early but assured me that he'd meet us at the airport at eleven tomorrow so that Sean could get his first pleasure from his plane.

Chris was encouraged to keep playing his banjo, Jack (with Amanda sitting close by) brought out his violin, and we were entertained musically.

As the evening wore on, the emotion of everything got to Sean and I found him sound asleep on one of the benches.

I carried him into the house and down to the elevator. I laid him onto the bed and carefully undressed him. He never moved. My boy was out like a light.

I realized that I needed to return to our guests so I softly pulled the covers over him and bent over to administer a soft sweet kiss. "Up in the air Junior Bird Man. Sweet dreams."

He hadn't moved when I returned to the bedroom hours later. I thought about Chris' song and thought to myself that is was a shame because I'd liked to have blown on Sean's little whistle which certainly wasn't made of tin.

Chapter 24

If you would learn to fly, you must first learn to stand and walk and run and climb and dance. You must understand the joy of this world and your position on it.
Flying is essentially nothing more than throwing yourself at the ground and missing. That sounds so simple but so many of us fail. That is what's known as a crash.

Will Fletcher was waiting for us at the end of the tarmac with a broad smile. Brian was along with us Jack had wisely decided that flying in a small plane wouldn't be good for his ear.

I tried very hard not to giggle as I noticed that both Will and Sean were wearing beige aviator shirts. I thought back to that day almost two years ago when I'd first brought my little boy home and we'd joked about the 'dress code'.

"Shall we go see her?" he indicated a hanger on the other side of the field. "Your Dad has rented a hanger here so your plane won't be exposed to the weather. I've checked her out but I haven't taken her up Sean. This will be her first flight. Are you excited?"

Sean grinned at him. "That would be an understatement I think!"

Will clapped him on the shoulder and grinned. I suspected that they were going to get along very well.

As we walked through the hanger door, Sean stopped dead in his tracks. The model that I'd given him yesterday was a perfect replica of the wonderful craft that stood before us. It was painted with a sleek blue-over-white pattern and was just beautiful.

"Dad, is this really mine?"

I smiled and nodded to him.

"Mr. Eric, you and Brian please climb into the rear seats, I'd like to show Sean how to do a walk around."

As we climbed into the cabin, Brian grabbed my hand. "I-I've never flown before Dad. I'm a little bit scared."

I squeezed him close into me. "Brian, walking down the road is more dangerous baby. I won't be surprised if you don't ask me to give you flying lessons."

"I-I'd never ask for something like that. All I'd ever ask for was that you'd be my Dad and I already know that can't happen except in my imagination. Thanks' for letting me pretend Mr. T… I really love you." I didn't know what to say or how to respond so; I simply put my arm around him and hugged him tight.

Shortly, Sean and Will entered the sleek little plane and took their seats. Sean's smile could have brightened a pitch-black room.

"I'm going to name it DOVE Dad."

"That's a great name for your plane Sean."

"Yeah Sean, it's almost colored like a dove." Brian was grinning.

Will turned and looked at us. "Now, I don't know if any of you have been up in a small plane before. It's different than being up in a jet. The air turbulence can make for a bumpy ride. I think that part is fun but for newbies, it can sometimes be a concern. I want you to know that it's normal. Think of it as if we're in a boat and just riding the waves only, the waves we'll be riding are invisible."

"Now Sean, let's go through the checklist. Every time you fly, you'll do a walk around like we just did and then, you'll go through the checklist… You'll do this every single time you fly. Got it?"

"Yes Will… Got it."

"I was told that you'd be a good student."

I smiled as he and my boy went through the rudimentary preflight checklist. I noted that Will had given the clipboard to Sean.

"This will happen every time you fly Sean… every single time."

Soon we were taxiing forward. Will made certain that Sean had put on an extra pair of headphones and listened to everything the flight control person said. With a nod of his head and a smile to Sean, we were soon racing down the runway and in moments, we were up in the air.

Brian had tensed up but I think the swiftness and the pure pleasure of takeoff released his apprehension. He was soon smiling and looking out with a face glowing with joy.

"That was so neat! This is so cool!"

Small planes fly so much closer to the ground that the experience is actually much more charming and to a certain degree more exciting. This was Brian's first flight and I was enjoying him experiencing it.

"That's your estate below us now," Will said over his shoulder.

"This kid is doing pretty good don't you think, Eric?"

"What Will?"

He was grinning as he looked back at me. "Sean has been flying for the past twenty minutes. Sean… wave to your Dad."

My little boy turned around and grinned. "How cool is this Dad? I'm flying my own plane!"

"Pretty cool indeed, Sean. Pretty cool indeed."

After we'd landed, we confirmed that Sean's first lesson would be next Friday. Will explained that for a while he'd be using a flight simulator but that in a rather short time he'd really be taking off and landing. After that, it was just doing it… practice makes perfect.

"Could there be a cooler birthday present? Could you be a cooler Dad? Could I ever be luckier?"

I grinned. "The answers are no, no and no but could I have ever been a luckier Dad? The answer is NO. Now, let's do lunch and I vote for Deegan's but Brian gets the deciding vote."

The brown haired boy smiled and said, "Of course Deegan's. Could there be a better burger?"

Sean grinned and hugged his friend. "Dad was just testing you, weren't you Dad?"

"Well yes in way. Man does not live by carne asada burritos alone. I was actually wondering what we were going to eat for lunch but it seems like I've gotten my way so, there's no argument from me."

There is nothing more fun than sharing a burger lunch with two little boys. It is a time of giggles and noshing and really fun conversation. This, of course, is not to mention a furious consumption of food.

Sean and I were bent over the chessboard. Jack and Brian were curled up on couches reading as Daniel entered the room. He approached, bent close to my ear and spoke very softly, "Eric there is a telephone call for you. It's Brian's mother. I've taken the liberty of having it transferred to the telephone in your study."

I nodded. "Thank you Daniel. That was very thoughtful of you."

I told Sean that I had an urgent telephone call and walked down to my study. I made a quick drink before I picked up the phone to speak to Mrs. Wiliams. "Maria, its Eric how can I help you?"

The call was tear-filled but not unexpected. Brian's grandmother had passed. Her remains were going to be cremated tonight and there was going to be a gathering tomorrow. Following that, Maria and I would have a meeting with Brian.

After hanging up the phone, I made myself a new drink and walked down the hall. "Spider, come take a walk with me."

He rose up and by the very way he came to me I already knew that he understood what I was about to tell him. I held him close and tight while he cried out his grief.

I had three boys in my bed and while the configuration was awkward, it was certainly delightful.

Our group shower was a pleasant but then it was time to get serious. "Right after breakfast, it's suits on boys. Brian has to stand at his mother's side today and I expect you to support him."

Brian took my hand. "Thank you for letting me be a part of your family. I really liked pretending that you were my Dad. Now, I have to do what I need to do. I just wish… I j-just wish. "

I held him close as he wept silently.

***

It was a formal Catholic service, Brian was at his mother's side for the entire time, and he escorted her hand-in-hand into the Church Hall for the reception.

Maria Williams was a very active member of this church and therefore, it was well attended. Brian stood at his mother's side just as a strong young son should.

As the guests left, I asked John if he would take Sean and Jack out to the limo.

"Brian, your mother and I would like to have a talk with you. Is that OK?"

"Sure" He didn't look that sure though.

"Brian, I've always loved being your mother but I've always felt compelled to the Holy Orders. Now that my mother has died, I wish to take on that vocation but I'd only do it if I knew you were happy and well cared for."

"Eric and I have talked a great deal about this and he is willing to take on full parental responsibility for you. I'd sign over my parental rights to him and enter the convent. You'd become his legal son."

"D-Does that mean you won't be my Mother anymore?"

"No Brian it just means I won't be an active parent anymore. You'll always be my son and I'll always love you."

He turned to me and he was obviously confused.

"What this means Brian is that, if you agree, your mother will sign over her parental rights to me. That means that after we go before a judge, you'll be legally and in every other way my son. That means I'm your Dad if you agree."

"S-So I can really call you Dad and it's for real not just in my imagination?"

I didn't get the chance to answer because he was onto me like an avalanche.

I left him with his mother because they obviously had a lot to say to each other. I walked over to the limo and sat down with Sean and Jack. "So, suppose I told you that you had another brother?"

They exploded all over me.

"About time Dad."

Jack was almost scowling. "He needs to be part of this family."

"Whaddaya mean? He's my brother already just like you, Jack."

"Well, I feel like I'm his Dad so… I guess that we all agree."

Brian walked out from the church and his cheeks were burnished red. I was concerned about his conference with his mother. He entered the limo and suddenly his eyes grew bright and he gave me a larger than possible smile.

"So, can I really call you Dad?"

I tussled his hair and tickled his ribs.

"No, not until Friday when we stand before the judge."

"DAD!"

Two other voices shamed me.

"OK, I guess you can call me Dad even before the judge makes it official on Friday. But it is going to be official Brian. Your Mom is taking her holy vows and has signed over her parental rights to me. She'll be entering the convent tomorrow and has chosen to be cloistered for at least a year."

"That means even you won't be able to see her or speak with her. Is that all right with you? I want you to understand that you do have legal rights and don't have to agree to any of this."

"DAD!" he threw his arms around me and buried his face into my chest. As he snuffled against me, I told him that he'd be responsible for getting the snot off my shirt.

He giggled against me but didn't move. This was a closeness of body, mind and heart that he didn't want to forget. Neither did I.

Sean and Jack knew instinctively not to attempt any contact or to make any comment at this point. They sat and smiled as Brian and I embraced.

I glanced at John's face in the rearview mirror. There were tears running down his cheeks but his face had an enormous smile. "I've already called ahead Eric. They're waiting."

"Thank you John.

"Boys, aren't you going to say anything to your new brother-to-be?"

"What are you talking' about Dad? He's been our brother since before you first brought him home! Haven't you Spider?"

The teary brown-haired boy smiled and nodded in agreement. "Y-Yes, it's felt like that and you all let me pretend b-but I never believed it would actually become real."

Jack responded, "Remember I told you that he'd figure something out Brian. Dad always figures something out. Great job Dad!"

Brian raised his up his tear-streaked face. He gave me a wet, but smile-filled, kiss. "Yea, great job Dad!"

All of us in the car laughed.

***

All of our Joyous Gaurde 'family' was waiting on the front steps. I'd informed them of my intentions and my hopes for the out-come but it had not been certain until I'd talked to Mrs. Williams the night of her mother's passing.

I knew that I was going to have to spend more time with Brian helping him to understand his Mother's action and making him believe that no part of this was his fault but, at this moment, I wanted him surrounded by love and welcome.

John had called and let everyone know that things had gone as planned and the small celebration was prepared.

The already shell-shocked twelve-year-old was practically mobbed by a group of wonderful people that he'd already allowed himself to imagine to be his extended family.

He was cuddled, hugged, and kissed as we all walked down to the solarium.

How Martha had been able to create the fantastic cake even with Jenny's help in just one day, was beyond me but it was beautiful. Daniel's staff was moving among the guests handing out champagne.

I raised my glass and hugged Brian to my side. "Friends, this is going to be a short celebration especially since we all know about Brian when he's allowed to have too much wine."

The boy blushed and the rest of us broke out into loud laughter.

"Tonight we're celebrating the fact that a week from now, Brian Andrew Wilson has agreed to allow me to make him a legal part of my family; my Son."

There was a raucous round of applause to this.

"Dad!"

Sean called out, "Ain't he gonna be Brian Tucker?"

"Only if he wants to Sean although we've had a conference here and it's pretty much been decided that if he wants to change his name, we'll have it changed to 'Spider' Tucker."

Everyone giggled.

"On a serious note, let's toast the reasons that have moved this into possibility."

"First, God has taken Brian's grandmother home releasing his Mother from the burden and responsibility of her care."

"Second, this sad death has accelerated the desire in his Mother's heart to fulfill a longing she has harbored for most of her life; the taking up of Holy Orders and committing the rest of her life to God."

"Third, in order for her to feel free to do that, it was necessary to find Brian a loving caring home, and to be convinced in her heart that he would be raised in a loving, supportive environment. More important than that, she needed to be convinced that it would be an environment where Brian himself would be happy and know he was loved. Without meeting these last criterion, she would have given up her vocation and never considered entering the convent."

"She and I talked about this for many long hours and I did some soul-searching. After ensuring that he'd received all of his shots, had been recently flea-dipped and had no indication of mange, I agreed to take him off her hands."

I pulled him into a hug as everyone laughed.

"Now before we have our cake and I pack these boys off to bed, let me tell you that Brian and Sean have a baseball game on Tuesday, you're all invited to Brian's adoption diner on Friday which will also celebrate Sean's first 'official' lesson in his airplane which he has christened; 'DOVE'."

"Then, on Saturday, Deer Run will field the first baseball team with two members of the Tucker family."

The cake was delicious and the celebration was joyful.

***

I wasn't in the least surprised to find three beautiful, smiling and completely naked boys sitting on my bed when I entered my room. "What's this all about?" I asked trying unsuccessfully to look gruff.

"We want to sleep together as a family Dad."

Brian seemed almost afraid to have spoken. I realized this was a terribly emotional day for him.

"OK, but 'sleep' is the optimal word tonight got it?"

"Of course Dad."

They were all three grinning like the wicked little boys they could be.

"If you guys try anything, I'm going down to the trophy room, getting Sean's paddle and tanning your asses."

Jack leaned over and kissed me. "Is that a promise?"

I issued a very pretend growl as I shed my clothes and slipped in between a pile of smooth little boy flesh. There are far worse ways to end a day.

Sean was kneeling at my side. "Dad, you're not really gonna make Brian change name to 'Spider' are you? That's just his nickname when he plays sports."

I giggled. "You didn't really believe that did you?"

Sean and Brian answered in tandem and a little timidly, "Well… yeah; a little bit."

"Well, the truth be told, although that would certainly be an exotic name, I suppose 'Brian' sounds better."

At some dark hour, I felt a kiss against my cheek and then a whisper in my ear. "I'm sad that my Mom doesn't want to be my Mom any more but I'm sure happy that you want to be my real Dad."

I grabbed him and rolled him up onto my torso. I smiled as I felt the sleeping body of Sean instinctively roll up against my right side while the cutely snoring larger body of Jack huddled against my left side.

I knew that soon, Jack would turn over and press his succulent ass into my hip and he would out sleep us all in the morning.

Sean's leg had already been thrown over mine and sometime in the night, his arm would cross over my body or Brian's.

I sighed as I rested among the warm bodies. "I love my Tadpole, my sailor and my Spider. How about you Dad and Mom?"

I'm certain it was the champagne but I distinctly thought I felt two sets of lips kiss my own.

Before sleep took me, I made two mental notes:

I wanted to call Coach Chino Lopez and make certain I talked him into changing the pitching order. I didn't want Brian pitching Tuesday's game, I wanted him pitching next Saturday's game as my son.

I also wanted to make four appointments with Jerry at 'Sheerz'. We were all shaggy and I wanted us all to look good for the adoption and the party

First of… to all you sharp eyed readers; I'm from Coastal Georgia I'm a 20 year Georgia Bulldogs fan. I don't know what kind of Brain-fart I had last chapter regarding the piano player in Casablanca but, I ASSURE you that I DO know that Vince Dooley was Head Football Coach and Athletic Director for the University of Georgia. During his 25 year tenure, them 'Dawgs' had an impressive 201-77-10 record but to my knowledge, Vince Dooley plays no musical instrument. If he does, he certainly didn't play and sing 'As time Goes By' in the classic Bogart film. That gentleman was Mr. Dooley Wilson. - BACK

Chapter 25

The wonderful thing about waking up each morning is that we've been granted the chance at a new beginning. What happened yesterday is essentially a done deal and we can't do a thing about it.
We also can't do more than wonder what might transpire today. It is a very new playing field.
Since what happened yesterday cannot be undone… begin each day anticipating what might take place rather than dwelling upon what has already happened. Forget what is past and joyfully envision what can be.
Accept these opportunities as the gifts that they truly are.

"Man Jerry! I've never had my hair cut this fancy before. Usually my Mom just had Cindy, the lady next door cut our hair. I always thought that was alright but you… this is great!"

Jerry smiled as his scissors and comb flew through the mahogany brown hair. Unlike Sean and Jack who for the most part tolerated haircuts, this was a new experience for Brian. Jerry was a master stylist and he essentially sculpted hair to enhance a person's appearance. Somehow, Brian understood this and appreciated it.

As he finished and flicked the cape before dusting off Brian's neck, Jerry patted his shoulder and guided the boy off the chair.

"It was a pleasure to cut your hair Brian. I expect I'll see you often." He turned his attention to Sean who was sitting next to me. "You next wiggle worm."

Sean blushed because he knew the accusation was true.

"Kay Jerry, just not too short."

"Sean, what did I tell you the first time I cut your hair?"

The boy giggled as he answered, "That you'll cut it the way it needs to be cut."

"Right. I'll cut it the way it needs to be cut. You've never been unhappy about that have you?"

"No Jerry, I always look cool when you're finished."

"Then can you possibly try to sit still while I attempt to perform my magic on this thick black mop of yours? Christ, what I'd give to have a head of hair like yours Sean."

I smiled to myself. This type of dialogue had been going on between Sean and Jerry from the first time I'd brought him here to SHEERZ

Sean's was the last haircut and then we could all grab some lunch. The boy was smiling as he left the chair and Jerry gave him a friendly squeeze.

"You know that you're my biggest challenge Sean. I always hope your Dad forgets to bring you when he comes here."

"Aw Jerry, you know you love cutting my hair. You'd miss me if I stopped comin here."

"Yep, of course I would Sean except if your Dad keeps on adopting kids… you might get lost in the shuffle."

"I don't think you need to worry about that Jerry," I smiled as I handed him my credit card. "I suspect that Brian is the cap on this family jug."

The boys bid him a loud goodbye as we left his shop.

Brian had become as addicted to carne assada burritos as the rest of us were and therefore, there was no question about lunch.

We were seated around one of the crude wooden tables chowing down. I glanced at my three newly shorn boys and admired their beauty. Sean noticed me looking.

"What Dad?"

"Nothing little man. I was just enjoying the view."

He giggled and took a big bite from his burrito.

"You know, I was supposed to pitch tomorrow but coach moved me to Saturday instead," Brian said.

I smiled inwardly as I realized Chino Lopez had made the switch I'd requested. I thought to myself that I needed to find a way to thank that man for everything he'd done. "Well do you know what that means Brian?"

He looked blankly at me.

"Well, by your choice, after I've officially adopted you, you will have also legally changed your name. In the face of the law and the world you'll be Brian Tucker so on Saturday, there will be a Tucker on the mound and a Tucker on first base. That will be a first for Deer Run."

"Yeah and don't forget that there will be two Tuckers watching and cheering you on," Jack interjected.

Brian placed his burrito down and blinked back his tears. "It's true isn't it? Friday I'll really be a Tucker. You guys will really be my brothers and you… YOU will truly be my father… my Dad. It will all be real, not pretend anymore."

I knew he couldn't hold it in and I pulled him into me as he burst into tears. I hugged him fiercely as he shook with sobs. "Cry out those happy tears Brian." I rubbed his heaving back. "Cry out those tears little boy because there is nothing but happiness ahead of you. We… your family will make certain of that."

"F-Family… I've got a family and I love every one of you."

"Geeze Brian, you're cryin' onto your burrito," Sean said with a giggle and that lightened up the mood.

***

As we pulled the Lexus past the gate I asked the armed Skugga to call Richard and let him know that we'd arrived. I was just dicking around and wanted Richard to know I could still maneuver around his 'sensible' rules.

I escorted the boys up to their classroom and took the elevator up to the command center. It was Brutus sitting at the com and I greeted him happily. "How's the coffee today Brutus?"

"It's perfect like always Mr. Tucker. Shall I get you a cup?"

"No, as far as I know neither of my arms or legs are broken so I suspect I can get my own but I do need to inform you that if you intend to continue your career in the Skuggor Brutus, you need to begin calling me Eric."

The look on his face was humorous but I didn't laugh.

"We all work closely up here and titles or formal names just get in the way. The guys trust you and think highly of you; therefore, so do I. "

"Thank you Eric. I appreciate that and I appreciate the right to familiarity."

I clapped him on his shoulder. "It seems to me that you've earned all that."

He smiled and I sat next to him sipping my mug of coffee. We exchanged small talk for about a half of an hour before Barry entered the room.

After some discussion, I rose up to leave. Brutus smiled and said, "See you later Eric."

His face showed the pleasure he felt saying that and I smiled back at him. "For sure Brutus, see you later."

My meeting with Uncle Phil and Chris was a bit of a surprise because they both asked if they could begin daily lessons with Brian. "If these boys gently learn what they are destined for, it will be easier and more natural than what you've had to endure. Your father failed you in that regard."

Uncle Phil tilted his tumbler at me and I realized he was quite right. I was learning about the vast empire that I controlled bit by bit. My boys should learn about it slowly and naturally.

***

"OK now Brian choose."

There were four bedrooms on the floor that had never been occupied. They were essentially identical to Sean and Jack's rooms so the main choice was the view.

Very quickly Brian chose the room with the west view like mine and Sean's.

"Alright then. Daniel is expecting you to get with him and select furniture also paint colors and everything else you need to make this room your own."

His smile was enough to brighten the entire day. "I can't believe that this is really happening."

"Well Brian, the only one who can stop this from happening is you."

"Dad!"

"I'm just saying."

He was on my lap with his arms around my neck and I wrapped my arms around his torso and pulled him tightly against me. "You're very welcome into this family Brian. I love you."

"I love you too Dad. I never believed this would be real."

"Well, it's not real until Friday so I guess you're just our guest until then."

"Dad!"

I smiled and pulled him close to me. "I think you've been a part of this family from the very first day I brought you here. Your brothers have always loved you and so have I. Friday will simply make it legal. Are you comfortable with what is going to happen? Any regrets or questions?"

"Only that I wish I understood my Mom's decision. I know she hasn't been happy but I thought she loved me."

"Brian she loved and still loves you. For whatever reason, she loves God more. It was a thing in her family as she was growing up. It seems she always felt compelled to be a Nun and after your grandmother died and after getting to know and trust me, she decided that she could take up those holy orders. It was all about love Brian especially her love for you."

I kissed him softly and quite tenderly. "Can you be happy here in this family Brian?"

He raised his face to mine and smiled. "I already am Dad. I've never been so happy or felt so loved. Thank you for caring so much for me."

I ran my hand gently through his brown hair. "Brian, you are easy to love and to care about. Now go out and have some fun you're playing in left field tomorrow don't let anything get past you."

He smiled and we kissed before he scampered off to find the other boys.

***

I was sitting in the kitchen munching on some oven warm sugar cookies as Martha told me that she planned Friday night's dinner to be lasagna. "Jenny and I can pull this off with no problem."

"Well, you won't get any argument from me."

Smiling she swatted me on the back and said, "You big jerk. I'd have had you if I suggested burgers."

I giggled. "Yeah but they would have been Martha Burgers."

Smiling, she swayed into her kitchen.

***

Chris was sitting across from me in the library. "My Mother and Aunt Rita would like to stay at least until Brian's adoption on Friday."

"Chris, they can stay here forever as far as I'm concerned. That's completely up to you and them."

"Is that a real possibility, Eric? I mean, my condo sure has more than enough room and I really enjoy having them near and they just love the boys and they love Martha and Jenny… I would…"

"Chris, don't ask me, you jerk, ask them. You might discover that they don't want to live here."

"I will and I'll let you know what we decide."

Daniel appeared at the door. "A moment if I may Eric?"

"Sure Daniel, come join us and make yourself a drink. In fact, I was sent a case of a new single malt to try and I've only had one drink from the bottle on the bar but I like it a lot. It's called 'The MacGladrey' and it's wonderfully peaty."

Daniel smiled and moved to the bar, poured a dram and sat down with Chris and me.

After taking a long sip he said, Well I got together with Brian as you requested and we walked through his bed room and he selected furniture and fixtures from the various catalogs and, frankly, they're all substandard."

I smiled at Chris remembering the cheap furniture he'd originally ordered for his condo. "That sounds like somebody else who moved into this complex. Do you need my thoughts on the actual furniture Daniel or just my authority for you to select the upgrades?"

"Oh, I suspect I can do it quite satisfactorily with your permission. That will also include much upgraded computer, entertainment and technical equipment. That wonderful boy is quite modest in his desires."

"That's what I love about all three of them Daniel; they're so unselfish. Why don't you make us each another drink then you can get Brian's stuff ordered and coming? Whatever it takes, I want it here and in place by Friday."

***

The Tuesday ballgame was very exciting. The other team was very strong and aggressive and they gave our defense a real workout. Sean at first base and Brian in left field made some spectacular plays. The score was very close… we were tied into extra innings. In fact, it was the seventh inning.

Sean was third at bat with two outs against us and on the second pitch, my little man blasted a one-run homer over the fence.

That proved to be all that was required. Our team won the game and my little Sean had now hit a home-run in every game played so far! I was so excited about two Tucker boys playing on Saturday.

We selected Deegan's for our celebration after the game and I don't know who was more enthusiastic; the boys or Arlen. I'd really become fond of that man and appreciated what he'd done for both of my younger sons.

***

I'd taken Brian to Struthers and we'd obtained a summer wardrobe for him. All three boys would be re-measured and outfitted in the fall. I smiled and thought to myself that from now on, the underpants he wore would be his own

He looked wonderful in his fitted blue blazer and tan twill slacks. His white oxford cloth shirt was open at the neck as was mine as well as Sean's and Jack's. None of us Tucker men were big fans of neckties.

John was waiting at the front door with a broad grin on his face.

"Hi John. Are you coming with us too?" the brown haired boy smiled as he asked.

"Brian, I've been there for the other two. I certainly wouldn't miss this one."

"We climbed into the limo and we were at the courthouse in a bit less than twenty minutes. We were in Judge Gardner's courtroom almost at once.

The judge, being a family friend had been through this before. He knew that about half the paperwork was bogus and strictly meant to impress the kids I really appreciated his going along with that because it made it feel more important to the boys.

He formally asked Brian if he was desirous of becoming my son and then enquired about the name change.

Brian answered affirmatively to both questions and we signed the papers.

As he'd done twice before, the Judge took the young boy's hand and became the first person to greet him as a Tucker.

We left the Courthouse with the boys hooting for joy and John and me trying to hide our happy tears.

***

The big dining room table was fully extended and the happy sounds rang against the walls as we all enjoyed each others company and the wonderful meal Martha and Jenny had created.

Sean had been a bit disappointed with his flying lesson earlier because it was strictly using a flight simulator. Even though it was a very good one. Will Fletcher had cautioned him that it might be four weeks before they moved from that to the cockpit of Dove.

"It's my intention to have you taking off in five weeks Sean and landing in six. We're going to be slow and methodical because there's very little margin for error in an airplane."

Sean had given him a sort of half smile. "I understand, Will. It's just that I'm so excited about learning to do this."

"And, I'll be even more excited if we take the time to make certain you don't crash with us both in the plane Sean."

My boy gave that a moment's thought before breaking into a big grin. "Yeah. You're prolly right about that Will."

Now though, Sean was laughing and joking as we all sat around the huge table and celebrated Brian's entry into the family. I had whispered to both of them that I would be watching how much wine they drank because I wanted a spectacular performance on the baseball field tomorrow.

Sean giggled and said, "You better remind Brian 'cause he usually drinks all of his an' half of mine."

As the plates were being removed, Doctor Swaim rose from his chair and, with a smile, presented Brian with a gold pendant identical to those he'd given to me, Sean and Jack. It was a simple gold oval with the words: 'Noli Timere' engraved.

Brian recognized what it was at once and promptly burst into tears as he hugged his large tutor in gratitude. Doc helped him place it around his neck and Brian smiled as everyone in the room cheered.

I watched the faces of all three boys during the meal and it was obvious to me that adopting Brian had been a right and good decision. They were happy and perfect together. I shook my head as I marveled at how relatively quickly I had built a family. It was a family of three good, caring, loving and responsible boys.

I suddenly felt very proud and very grateful.

***

"The kid's never pitched like this in his life before," Arlen exclaimed to us all.

Brian had walked to the mound in the first inning not as Brian, but as 'Spider' and Spider was dealing today.

It was the fifth inning and thus far, he hadn't allowed a player to reach first base. These were six inning regulation games. Could my new son be on the verge of a perfect game?

There was one out and 'Spider' had the current batter at a full count. He launched one of his fastballs and just slightly missed his spot.

The batter connected and the ball flew almost straight to Sean who snagged it for the second out. The two new brothers grinned broadly at each other as the runner retired to the dugout.

John gave Arlen a gentle punch in the arm. "You've sure done some great work with those boys!"

"They're naturals." Arlen grinned.

We all sat in awe as Brian took out the next batter with three pitches.

The score was one to nothing as Deer Run came up to bat.

Kelly was playing third base and he swung at the first pitch sending the ball into center field easily making it to first base.

Evan our left fielder was next and he worked his at bat to a full count before he flicked the next pitch over the shortstop's head and, just like that, we had runners at first and second.

Rico was up next and he took two quick strikes and a ball. The pitcher tried to be a bit too cute with his next throw and Rico was right on it nailing a great base hit into short right field. The bases were loaded and we had no outs as Chris came up to bat.

The boy swung on the first pitch and made great contact but the ball was caught by the center fielder and our runners were held on base.

Charlie was next and, as usual, he patiently waited for his pitch. He connected on the third one but unfortunately, his drive wound up right in the third baseman's glove.

It was Sean's turn. He'd played an extraordinary defensive game so far but he hadn't produced at the plate.

He took his customary chops with the bat before stepping into the box. I wondered suddenly if this was something Arlen had taught him or just a ritual he'd developed on his own. I always loved watching how his wonderful little ass filled the seat of his uniform pants as he did this. I sighed.

The boy was beautiful and there was no denying it.

He took the first pitch and it was a strike right down the middle. His beautiful face was stoic and there was no hint as to what he was thinking.

He held steady for the second pitch knowing it was high and outside.

The pitcher obviously felt he could get Sean and the third pitch was right on the left corner. Sean didn't swing but it was a called strike. A good call I had to admit and Sean certainly didn't demonstrate any complaint.

The face on the pitcher was demonstrating more confidence. He shook off two calls from his catcher before indicating he was satisfied. He reared back and let the pitch go.

Arlen has great eyes and he was whooping long before the ball reached the plate.

Sean's swing was textbook perfect; almost elegant in its execution and accuracy.

They say that every bat has a 'sweet spot' that may be true for traditional wooden bats but I'm not so certain about aluminum and compound bats used in youth sports. Having said that, there most certainly seemed to be a sweet spot on Sean's bat this day. The sound of the contact was brisk and only momentary. The ball flew over the fence swifter than a hawk. It wasn't his longest home run but it certainly was significant.

As the other three boys crossed the plate, they waited to greet their slugger. He was smiling jubilantly as he touched home.

It was pretty much all over but Brian made it official as he took down the other team's first three batters.

I was almost screaming with my pleasure.

Brian had a perfect game and Sean had a grand slam… not only that, it meant that Sean had homered in every game so far this season.

As we were all enjoying our burritos, Jack excused himself to go to the Men's room. I was shocked as I watched him walk away. With everything that had been going on lately I suppose I'd failed to notice that my red haired wonder was suddenly rather buff.

I pulled him aside and asked him about it and he smiled. "Well Dad, I can't actually box yet but coach Sal has been working with me. I'm doing a lot of bag work and he's put me on a program with free weights. I supplement that workout with time on the Nautilus at our gym at home. If I'm going to take over from Richard someday, I figure I should be in shape."

"What do you mean Jack?"

He smiled and reached out and took my hand. "Well Dad, I've been thinking that if Sean and now Brian, are going to be involved in the family business then so should I. Richard and the Skuggor are the part that I'm most interested in and I'd like to start learning about them."

"But Jack, what about your dreams of ocean exploration?"

"I actually figure that I can do that as well, Dad. You're a young man, Richard is a young man and so is Chris. We boys don't need to be in control for a long time. We can be learning and still doing other stuff as well… like Sean learning to fly for instance."

"Have you talked to Richard about this Jack?"

"No Dad, I was hoping we could do that together."

I mused to myself that my father's ultimate dream might actually be fulfilled someday; Magnus Veritas controlled by three Tuckers. What a grand plan.

"Well Jack, Brian was only just approached by Uncle Phil regarding his role in all this so, I suggest we meet with Richard tomorrow. I suspect that he'll be very pleased. He likes you a lot."

"I know Dad and I like him just as much."

***

It was quite dark when he came into my room. Even in the lost light of the nighttime, I could tell that he was naked. He slipped silently under my covers and sheets and sidled closely up against me.

"Hi little man. Is something bothering you?"

"Nope. It's just that I miss sleeping with my Dad alla time like we used to."

"But, you know how much you're loved and how important you are to me right?"

"Course I do an I'm not jealous that you adopted either Jack or Brian I just sometimes miss when it was just us."

"Me too, Sean, so what do you think about you and me doing something together? Will Fletcher, your flight instructor has been talking to me about a previously owned sea plane he's come upon so I'm thinking that we try it out by flying up to the cabin at Long Bear. How does that sound?"

He hugged me tight and I could see his smile.

"That sounds great as long as you fuck me tonight and fuck me every night we're at the cabin."

I kissed him and said, "You've certainly become a little wanton Sean."

"No Dad, I've just become so much in love with you."

I smiled and reached into the drawer and pulled out the tube of lube.

"Well little man, I've always been in love with you. Pull up your knees and let me lube you up."

To my astonishment, I was up to the task three time that night and he was an exceptionally active lover. Eventually we just fell against each other totally exhausted.

Chapter 26

There is nothing more important than being positive. Your attitude and mind set are what makes or breaks the moment, the day and even your life.
Ships don't sink because they are surrounded by water. Ships sink because water has poured inside them and pulled them under.
Don't let whatever is going on around you get into you and weigh you down.
Stay afloat.

"Well Jack, I can't tell you how excited and delighted I am with your decision. Give me a couple of days to put my thoughts and plans together and then, we'll meet with Professor Swaim and work out plans for your education in your newly chosen profession. I agree with your idea that you also have plenty of time to pursue your other interests like oceanography but I must tell you that I'll insist that you… as soon as possible… enter one of our basic training programs."

"You've heard about Marine Boot Camp? Well my young friend, that's essentially child's play."

"You're only about to turn seventeen so that will need to wait. We have a strict policy that we take no one under eighteen but that doesn't mean you can't begin your training. Hell, Jack, you'll probably be pushing me out of my chair and into retirement in ten years."

We were sitting in the library. Jack (with my assistance) had explained to Richard his new intention to become involved in the Skuggor. As I'd suspected, Richard was ecstatic over the idea.

"Actually Richard, I'm hoping that in ten years, you and I will be working side by side handling the largest private para-military organization that the world has ever seen while my brothers manage the largest economic empire in history."

"I want to train just as every other member of Skuggor but, to be honest, I expect to be on the fast track to command. I envision my position to be very integrated with those of Sean and Brian. I see for the future a more closely-knit Magnus Veritas with every aspect basically intertwined. It will continue to grow as it has but eventually, there will be more than one person in absolute command."

"No offense Dad, and certainly no offense to your father, but three Tuckers will do much better than one Tucker."

I smiled as I got up from my seat and gathered their glasses. I walked to the bar and made two single malts and poured one Stone IPA. I smiled as I did this and commented, "Jack, since you've come of age, I suspect that the profits of the Stone Brewing Company in Escondido California have increased by at least twenty five percent."

I handed them their glasses and sat back down.

"Jack, the Great Game was designed to grow and mature. My father had two sons and he was counting on us to move the organization along. He never reckoned that he and my brother would die in the same instant. While he never resented it, I don't suppose the fact that I, his oldest son, was gay ever was a part of his planning either."

"If he were alive Jack, I promise that his three adopted grandsons would have pleased him to no end. You and your brothers are splendid young men with great hearts and minds. My mother would have spoiled you by now and, I suspect, so would have my father. I would never have pushed you into this choice but I'm very happy that you made it for yourself and, frankly, of the three of you, you are the best suited for the direction you've chosen."

"Thanks Dad, thanks Richard. I'm happy too and I know it will be a lot of hard work but you know what? I can do it."

Richard smiled and leaned over and gripped his shoulder. "Jack my friend; I believe you can do anything."

***

"I know you've never considered a pontoon plane and I'll bet Sean had never even heard of them but this sweet Cessna is in perfect condition. The original owner only flew her for six months before he suffered a stroke. His widow is willing to let it go for a steal."

"I know about your property up on Long Bear Lake and I thought that if you bought this plane, you'd use your cabin more often since you didn't have to take that long drive. If nothing else Eric, this'll be a fun weekend."

We'd picked up Will and were almost at the cove that was currently used by the small community of seaplane pilots in our area.

"The idea is appealing, Will but, it's still only a four seater so, until Sean gets his wings, we won't be able to move the whole family up and down there."

"I understand Eric, but Sean will be licensed in three years. In the meantime, you'd own the plane. I know that your mental concept of money is very different from mine but even if you flew her a few times every year until Sean stops being a 'junior birdman', she'd have years and years of reliable service for you and you'll never match to price."

He grinned slyly at me. "Of course you do realize that I'd get a rather nifty commission if you bought it?"

I smiled as I pulled into the parking lot of the little waterfront airport.

"For right now, let's just load up the plane and plan on having a great weekend. The cabin is loaded with fishing gear and LC and Windy are expecting us… so we'll have a damned good time."

Sean (at my insistence) sat up front next to Will and they went through their checklist together.

"Now, guys, since neither of you has ever flown on a pontoon boat before, let me just tell you that take-off and landing feels different. The water offers more residence and so take-off will feel rough and restrained and landing will feel choppy. Nothing to be afraid of but I wanted you to know ahead of time."

As he taxied out to the middle of the cove, my initial impression was that this was like being in an awkwardly designed motor boat. Will revved the engine and soon we were speeding down the cove and he was right… the ride was choppy and the plane seemed to strain against the water and then suddenly, we were up and the world dropped beneath us.

"That was so neat Will!" Sean smiled at the pilot.

"Yep. It's almost a completely different feeling, Sean but, you'll learn all of it I promise. Now that we're in the air, why don't you take over? I'll tell you what you need to do but for now, you see our plotted course right?"

"Yes Will."

"Cool, then I think I'll take a nap… Oops! Just kidding."

They giggled and I settled back to enjoy the view.

***

Sean was still flying the plane as we flew over the cabin compound.

"Let's loop around Camp West Wind just to get the Commodore's attention," I suggested.

Sean grinned and to my extreme pleasure, knew exactly what he was doing. Looking down from the window, I could see boys on the beach jumping and waving.

"OK Sean, I've got the controls now."

Will put the airplane gently down onto the lake and taxied up to the dock in our cove.

Windy and LC were standing there waving as we pulled alongside. "Well, this is certainly a first Eric!" LC called out as the three of us deplaned. "Maybe Windy and I need to start thinking about redesigning the dock."

"Don't jump to any conclusions yet but I must tell you that, so far, this has been enjoyable and I've never gotten up here to the cabin this fast. LC and Windy, please say hello to Will Fletcher. Will is Sean's flight instructor and currently our pilot."

"That's only partly true you guys," Will said as the three men shook hands in greeting. "I did the take-off and the landing. Sean did all of the flying."

The smile on my boy's face was priceless and he happily hugged the two cabin caretakers.

"It's wonderful to see you again Sean," Windy said. "Are you ready to be our kitchen slave in the morning?"

The look on Sean's face was priceless until Windy, LC and I began laughing. "Why don't you guys take Will and his bag to his room and then we can all enjoy drinks out on the porch?"

"LC will do that and I'll run off to the kitchen to heat up some snacks. Then, LC can play bartender," Windy said as he turned and walked away.

As we sat comfortably in the cool evening air sipping our drinks and munching on Windy's wonderful finger food, Will remarked, "This may very well be the most perfectly beautiful place I've ever been to."

"Yes and Windy and I are forced to stay here all year long. Isn't that a bitch?" LC said.

"You might not think it was so perfect if you were up here in the winter," Windy interjected.

Will nodded his head. "I have to agree that I'm not a big fan of cold weather."

Sean just sipped on his glass of single malt scotch which I'd allowed him to have and smiled at us all.

Dinner was simple and delicious. LC grilled porterhouse steaks while Windy prepared cheesy mashed potatoes, mushrooms sautéed in white wine and a crisp mixed greens salad with grape tomatoes, cucumber slices and a spicy Italian dressing. We ate on the porch enjoying the view of the sun going down beyond Mount Osa Largo.

"We'll go out in one of the boats and show you the lake tomorrow, Will. For now though, I have a little boy here who seems to barely be able to keep his eyes open. Good night gentlemen."

I picked Sean up from the chair that he was semi-huddled in and as we left the room, he muttered more than actually speaking, "G'night guys."

The walls of my huge bedroom were almost entirely glass and the darkening sky was now a deep purple color as the sun hid itself behind the mountain.

"Let's get your clothes off so you can get to bed Sean," I said softly as I laid him onto the mattress.

His face broke into a sort of bad boy grin. "You do it Dad. I'm too much of a tired kid."

I smiled down at him. "Oh, I think I can play that game with you little man."

I untucked his blue aviator shirt from his trousers, unfastened the buttons, and pulled it up his chest. I forced him to sit up and worked it over his head and past each arm individually. Sean was playing 'rag doll'.

Once the shirt was off, I teased each of his brown little nipples with my tongue before I removed his sneakers and socks. I took the time to nibble his toes thinking to myself that his feet had certainly gotten bigger. My little Sean was growing up.

I reached down and unbuckled his belt and flipped open the copper button on his jeans. The zipper to his fly worked smoothly as I pulled it down. I remembered with a bit of a grimace that when I was young, the fashion had been to wear jeans with button up flies. How tedious that must have been for pederasts and boy lovers back then. This was certainly much easier.

"Are you too tired to raise that cute little ass of yours off the mattress so I can pull these down?"

He looked at me and giggled. "I'll try very hard Dad."

I grinned at him and said, "I'll make it as easy as I can. I'll pull your jeans and your briefs past your butt in one slick move."

With another giggle, he arched his back and in one long pull, I had his pants and boxer briefs down to his ankles. As he collapsed onto the bed again, I had both garments over his feet and off.

I gazed down at him and he stared up at me with a half-smile on his beautiful face. Even though his hair had been cut recently, it still spilled onto the pillow and he just lay there motionless inviting my inspection. His naked body was a gift to my eyes, my brain and my heart.

"When was the last time I told you that I love you?"

His smile widened. "You tell me alla time Dad. You show me that too."

In the lush dwindling light of the purple sky, his nude young body sprawled against the gray duvet was so heartbreakingly beautiful that I found I was fighting back tears. I loved this boy so much that there were times that even in my own private thoughts I couldn't find words to express it. The articulation of that love came from my heart and soul and imprinted itself wordlessly upon my very being.

This was such a time and I stood silent almost worshiping the display unabashedly presented beneath me.

I loved his spirit. I loved his sharp wonderful mind. I loved his agile, quick and capable physical skills as well as his incisive ability to learn. I loved his gentle and caring heart.

He was everything I wished I had become… everything I wished I was. I adored this boy. He was the angel that had saved my life.

"Come to bed with me Dad. I'm not really that tired."

"Soon, little man. Give me a second. I've got to do something first."

I bent down, took his young penis into my mouth, and wrapped my lips around it. I felt it rise and stiffen almost at once… young boys are young boys after all.

I looked up and his eyes were half closed… hooded by his incredibly dark lashes. He sighed softly as I moved my tongue along the hard little shaft I held trapped inside my mouth.

I moved slowly and sensuously up and down the stiff little member that was considerably larger than the tool that had belonged to the boy I'd originally brought home not so very long ago. My little Sean was growing up.

He wasn't so grown up yet that he could or even tried to control his orgasms and he exploded into my mouth rather quickly almost squealing out his delight.

I undressed and he pulled the covers down so that we both could slide under them and cling to each other with the sensual enthusiasm that only lovers can achieve. He was wrapped in my arms as his breathing settled into a slow gentle rhythm that told me he had fallen asleep.

It was then that I allowed my tears of joy and love to spill out and I wept silently as the purple sky turned to deep gray and then to black.

I wasn't religious but I certainly wasn't an atheist either. I considered myself to be spiritual and I had no qualms about whispering my gratitude and thanks to the universe for giving me the boy I held lovingly in my embrace.

Sometime in the dark, I fell asleep still holding him tightly against me.

He wasn't in bed when I woke up in the morning and after checking the bathroom and not finding him, I threw on some shorts and a sweatshirt and almost in a panic, I ran downstairs.

Almost by instinct, I entered the kitchen first and there he was. He was wrapped in an apron two sizes too large for him and his 'Sean smile' was brighter than the morning.

"Sit down Dad an I'll get your coffee. LC and Windy played a joke on me yesterday so, I decided to fool them an' actually be 'kitchen slave' today. Oh… good mornin' by the way," he grinned and leaned in and kissed me.

He scampered off but returned quickly with a large mug of strong black Kona blend and I took my first sip with pleasure. "Why don't you get a cup and join me, Sean?"

"Cause I'm the kitchen slave this morning, Dad."

LC walked over and placed a hand on the boy's shoulder. "Sean, you are officially relieved of that duty but Windy and I are certainly proud of you. Have some coffee with your Dad."

Sean smiled and ran off to the coffee urn. "Thanks LC!"

"No, Sean, thank you. You're a great young man."

As we sipped our coffee smiling at each other and not actually saying very much, Will entered the room. "I was compelled to come here by the enticing smell of java and now I realize that I am very close to my goal."

Sean giggled. "How do you drink your coffee, Will?"

"Just like your father… black and strong."

Sean got up and ran to the big coffee urn returning quickly with a steaming mug.

Will took a long sip and smiling said, "Sean if you weren't my only student, you'd still be my favorite student."

Sean giggled and said, "Oh, I bet you say that to all your other students, Will."

He grinned and replied, "Only the ones who bring me coffee when I'm at a cabin by a lake in the mountains."

***

"We're going to see the Commodore before he knows I'm here on the lake." We'd been out in the boat for about two hours and Will seemed to be enjoying himself. An admitted 'city boy', this much natural beauty was almost overwhelming to him.

"That's Raccoon Cove ahead of us and it's the gateway to Camp West Wind."

As we pulled in, I could see the old man standing near his dock waiting for us. I thought to myself that he must have some sort of radar in his head or a spy network stationed all around the lake.

I tossed my rope to him. "Make yourself useful you old sailor. Besides that would be the friendly way to welcome guests."

"Little E, is it your intention to become a pain in my ass?"

"On the contrary, Commodore, I just wanted to personally bring you a gift of two cases of whiskey."

"Hmmph… you always were a charmer little E. Welcome ashore."

As we stepped out of the boat he said, "Sean, I expect you'll find some old friends here. Your father, his companion and I will be up on the porch of the castle."

***

We were sitting on the porch drinking 'commodore lemonade'. "Thanks for the whiskey, Eric but I'd have done what I did just based upon your request. It's a very ugly world as you well know. I think though that you've made a start with what you're doing at the nest. I'll always be proud to have been a part of that."

"It never could have gone so well without you Commodore."

He smiled and then refilled my glass. "Now you're not here to try and con me into some other adventure are you?"

I smiled and shook my head. "No Sir. Believe it or not, I'm here strictly to try out a seaplane I might buy. I couldn't come to the lake without paying my respects though."

He slammed his fist down onto the wide arm of his dark blue Adirondack chair.

"So that WAS you that buzzed my beach yesterday! I should have known!"

"Actually, it was Sean flying the plane and he was trying to salute you."

The crusty old man laughed deeply and then grabbed his pitcher and refilled all of our glasses.

***

"Will we have time tomorrow to go to the grotto?" He was wrapped in my arms and I'd only just fucked his sweet little ass.

"Of course, Sean. We make our own schedule, little man. If we do, may I suck your little dick on the other side of the waterfall? I've never done that before."

His grin was mind-blowing. "Dad… you can suck my dick anyplace you silly! The thing is though that I want you to fuck me on that big flat stone we laid on last time we were here."

"I'm not so certain how comfortable that would be for you, Sean."

"I don't care about bein' comfortable. I only care about you an' me doin' stuff and that's somethin' I want to do. I wanted to do it last time but we… well… you know, we do it now."

***

Hand in hand, we burst through the cascading water and into the cold embrace of the sparkling pond. Beyond the curtain of falling water behind us, I had lovingly wrapped teenaged cock with my lips and sucked him to a dramatic and joyful denouement.

"Dad, Dad I love you so much! What kinna' life would I had if you hadn't chosen me? What kinna' life would I be livin'? I just love you so much!"

He rose up and out of the water. Beads of moisture glistened like gems… like tiny diamonds against his skin as the sunlight beamed down upon him and he shook his body like a puppy would do after emerging from a bath.

I stared in very appreciative awe as he climbed out of the pond and stretched himself flat against the table-like rock at the water's edge. "You promised, Dad." He was smiling as he beckoned to me.

"OK, my little man," I said as I walked to him.

"I'm thinking though that we'll do this with you on your knees. I really don't want you to be hurt. This should be fun so, we'll use these towels to protect your knees from being scraped. You get ready while I get the lube from my pack.

My heart almost burst with love and pleasure as I looked upon him perched on the stone and ready to offer himself to me.

I applied the lube liberally to his little rosebud, then slicked up my raging hard boner, and steadily slipped into him. The tight and remarkably warm atmosphere of his young bowels encouraged my raging hard penis to grow to boundaries it had never grown before. I was astonished as I moved in a very slow rhythm in and out of the boy I loved so well.

It was certainly our shared ardor but also the outdoor element and the natural beauty of our surroundings that made the lovemaking between us seem to go on forever.

It didn't, though and eventually I spilled my substantial load into the boy I loved. I rolled him over onto his back and gently cradled him into my arms.

He woke me up. "Dad, we've got to take off in the daylight. That plane hasn't got any instruments so we need to fly by line of sight."

I squeezed him against me. "You're right, little man but I sure love having you naked and against me out here in the wild. I love you my little Sean."

"I know that Dad and you must certainly know how much I love you."

***

"So, we need to establish future plans Eric. I came here to essentially be the tutor to an eleven-year-old boy for one year."

"I am now tutoring four boys all of whom are (on mutually agreed upon) divergent learning paths. The way you're going, I would hardly be surprised if one or two more little tykes dropped into the picture. This was a temporary arrangement Eric so we must come to some conclusion."

I stared harshly across at him because this was a conversation that I hadn't been expecting. Doc Swaim had become such a fixture in my life, the life of my family and the overall structure at Joyous Gaurde that I never considered he might choose to move on.

I felt a cold almost empty thing like a lump in my chest. "Are you unhappy here Doc? Have I put too many boys in your charge? Do you just want to leave because you feel it's time?"

He smiled as he took my empty glass from me and moved to the bar to mix two new drinks.

"Next May, Eric, I'll turn seventy and I want to know where I'll be nesting before that famous, but inevitable, grim reaper knocks on my door. I've loved my life but I've never taken the time to have a family. This is as close as I've ever come."

He waved his arm randomly across the room symbolically including the entire estate. "I loved you as a young boy and certainly adored your brother, Kyle. I loved your father as well, by the way, but after the accident, I just assumed that the relationship with your family was ended… especially since you turned into a drunken fool."

"When you brought me to the estate for Sean, I'd forgotten how much at home I felt here. I adore Sean, Jack and now Brian as well as Bobby but I've reached the age where I need to know where I'm going to die. I need to find and settle into somewhere permanent."

"My new book will be published in about two months. The royalties' from it and my other books… the residuals from my television shows and, of course, my university pension will allow me a very comfortable old age but I have to do that somewhere stable."

"Doc, why can't HERE be permanent? You've become such a part of our lives and I believe you love us as well. You love the cottage at Fish Camp and, as far as I'm concerned, it's yours. When you decide you don't want to teach anymore, we'll find another tutor but I need you as my personal mentor and guide. Please don't think of leaving us Doc. You're more than a part of our family… you are essential to our family.

"This is your home and when the time comes, THIS is where you'll die."

"THIS is your home Professor Swaim and don't you try to deny it."

He removed his dark rimmed glasses and wiped his eyes. "I was hoping that would be your answer but I felt you were owed the right to make that decision. I'll be delighted to stay here and tutor the children though I must caution you that if you begin to adopt eight or nine year kids, I probably won't be there for them."

"That's not very likely to happen my friend but thank you for this discussion. Please consider this estate and especially Fish Camp your home. I couldn't imagine it any other way. You are family and I love you more than I can ever express."

***

Jack's body stood silhouetted against the large window of my bedroom. His Daily workouts at Deer Run and down in our own gym had engendered round muscles on his body all without making him some sort of a caricature of a man/boy. His body was beautiful and perfect… sculptured but not obscene. He was essentially stunning. I wrapped him in my arms and drew him down onto the bed.

"Dad, could I ask you something?"

"Well that's silly, Jack. You know you can ask me anything."

"Well, next weekend Charlie's parents are going away on a trip and I'd kind of like to invite him to stay here. It's just that… he'd be sleeping in my room with me."

I tried to stop from giggling as I pulled him into me. "My little Jack! I'm envious of your sexual problem but you know I'm liberal about your adventures. Of course, you may have a guest here and I certainly don't care if he stays in your room. I'm all for it as long as I get to fuck you tonight."

He grinned and rolled over pulling his knees tightly to his chest. I grabbed a tube of lube and worked my fingers into his rectum before I greased my now rock hard cock. I leaned over and kissed his shoulders and the back of his neck. "Ready for me Jack?"

He chuckled, "I've been ready for you before you were ever ready for me, Dad."

I slid into his smooth hotness and smiled as I first drove into him deeply and then withdrew.

I began a slow almost rhythmic in and out motion until the boy beneath me was moaning and writhing on the bed. "Dad oh Dad! Eric… Dad I just… I juust"

His cock exploded a hot load and just moments later, I came inside him. It was an almost perfect experience.

Jack usually rolled onto his side and slept with his ass pressed against my hips but tonight, he slept wrapped in my arms and I woke that way as the sunlight slowly drove the darkness from the room.

I looked down upon my red haired wonder and he seemed so much like a little boy though I knew he was just a stone's throw from being a man.

He would be a man soon… almost in the blink of an eye but I was so glad he'd come into my life and that I was going to enjoy the twilight of his boyhood. I already knew that I'd enjoy him as a man as well. He was a good, smart and descent person and I was his father. I loved him and he loved me.

***

He was giving me the grand tour, so to speak. "Daniel decided that the stuff I chose was too cheap so he upgraded everything and it's wonderful. Look at this desk… could anything be cooler?"

"So you like your room?"

"Dad, I LOVE my room."

"As far as the view goes, I think you chose the correct side of the wing. Do you think you've chosen the correct direction for your life?"

We were sitting on his bed side by side and he turned to me. "Are you asking about becoming involved in Magnus Veritas?"

"Yes, Brian. You know you aren't forced to be."

"Dad, I can't even imagine being involved in anything more exciting. It's like playing a game of Monopoly with the whole world as the game board!"

I couldn't help it, I just pulled him against me and hugged him tight.

"Brian Tucker, I love you little boy."

His face was against my chest so his response was muffled but I heard it none-the-less. "I love you Dad. You have no idea how much I love you and my brothers."

We sat and hugged for a few minutes before we got up from the edge of his bed.

"So then, you've got everything you need Brian?"

He grinned at me. "I think it would be fair to say that I've got more than I need, Dad. Thanks."

"Well my little Spider, there's one more baseball game on Friday and then we're all going to work on your swimming because that's kind of the center of this… YOUR family."

"Cool!" he grinned and he took my hand as we walked down the hall.

***

I was in the library finally reading the Nate Mentor novel I'd given to Jack while he was convalescing. I'd invited Daniel to join me for a drink and he'd done just that… one drink and then out of the room. The man was a wonder and a puzzle but if I couldn't have Walter, I don't know who would be a better choice.

I was absorbed with my book so the subtle clearing of the throat noise got my attention at once.

It was Jack.

"Dad, I'm so sorry to bother you but it's just I've got this email and it's j-just…" His tears were pouring from those emerald green eyes.

I jumped to my feet and pulled him to me. "Jack! Slow down and tell what's going on."

Slowly his heaving sobs stopped as he sat against me on the black leather sofa.

"Dad if this is true, then our ship didn't go off course accidentally. Someone on the ship… maybe even the captain was looking for sunken treasure and they diverted the ship off course."

"Jack, may I read the email?"

He handed me the paper. I read it and then hugged him closely. "What we're going to do is research this and then we'll act upon it. If we act upon it Jack, you'll be integrally involved I promise you."

As I walked down the hall to the elevator I couldn't help but think that a sea voyage was in our future.

Chapter 27

Crooked paths are more intriguing than straight highways. Rolling waves are more thrilling than placid pools.
The blowing wind is more exhilarating than the calm air and the ghostly half-light of evening is often far more interesting than the bright sunshine of morning.
At any given opportunity, choose adventure over security. Dull routine will kill you just as surely as danger will.
It's just that taking risks and making unanticipated decisions allows for a much more enjoyable route to the end. Life itself should be the biggest adventure or else, perhaps it wasn't worth living at all.

It was Friday; the last regular baseball game of the season and our boys were undefeated. It was the top of the sixth inning and we were ahead four to two. Sean had done the impossible already and had hit a two-run homer which meant that he'd hit a home run in every game during the season. I'd made a mental note that I needed to figure out some way to reward Arlen for all of his wonderful work with both boys.

Our pitcher had gotten himself into a bit of a jam and so, Coach Chino had called Brian in from left field to hopefully close the game out. Just as in every competition he took place in, Brian almost magically transformed to 'Spider'.

'Spider' was a boy I didn't really know but he was a boy I wouldn't like to have to try and compete against.

'Spider' knew he couldn't be beaten. 'Spider' knew he was in perfect control whether he was pitching in a baseball game or defending his goal on the soccer pitch. 'Spider' was an awesome athlete and a fierce competitor.

He took the mound with runners on first and second, and only one out. He threw his warm up pitches and then nodded to Rico behind the plate.

The batter stepped into the box and Spider tossed a fastball inside almost frightening the kid at bat to death.

"Strike!" the umpire called.

He hurled another screaming fastball right above the batter's knees. The kid swung his bat but the ball was already in Rico's glove.

"Strike!"

The boy at the plate called time and stepped out trying to gain control. I pitied any batter his age going against my Brian when he was 'Spider' and he was dealing his Spider stuff.

Rico slipped the sign and Brian smiled and nodded. The next pitch was his filthy, filthy slider and the poor kid at bat didn't even know what had happened before he was called out.

I leaned over to Arlen. "If you'd done nothing else for Brian, that slider you taught him was the best thing you could have ever done."

He grinned and took a sip of his beer. "Yeah but Eric, if the kid wasn't so talented, just knowing how to technically throw a pitch wouldn't be worth crap. Brian and Sean are natural athletes. I instruct but they DO."

The next batter stepped into the box and 'Spider' and Rico exchanged looks before Rico gave the sign.

It was a change-up just off the middle. The batter connected and drove a hot grounder almost directly to Charlie at shortstop. The boy quickly snagged it and tossed it to Sean at first base and. just like that, the game and the season were over.

There would certainly be post-season play-off games but only for our team. The other triple A Deer Run team hadn't done so very well and they hadn't qualified for the post-season.

I shook Chino Lopez's hand. "I want to host the entire team and staff to a cook-out and pool party next week-end. I'll arrange the invitations and everything. You're a marvelous coach and a wonderful man Chino. This has been so much fun!"

He grinned. "The party sounds wonderful and I'm glad you're going to do it before the post-season games. We might be clobbered you know. Although, with Brian pitching and Sean's bat, I think we'll be something to reckon with."

The boys approached me. "Dad, seein as how Charlie is spendin' the night with us, Brian an me were wonderin' if Rico could too."

I looked at Rico. "Have you asked your parents?"

His smile was (as always) dazzling. They're fine with it if you are Mister T.

"Have you brought a change of clothes?"

"He don't need to Dad him and me are the same size so it'll be ok."

"Well then, it's fine with me. Do you want me to have the solarium fixed up like we usually do?"

"No Dad, we're gonna sleep in my new room. It'll be very special."

"OK Brian, now guys, I've already called Mrs. Edwards and told her we're having dinner out and I'm thinking that the undefeated Deer Park boys deserve nothing less than steaks so Arlen has made us reservations at Oakwood House. We have a private room so you can all remain in your uniforms.

"Wow Mr. T! My Dad ate there once and he told us it was the best meal he'd ever had!"

I grinned at him. "Charlie, I hope it turns out to be the best meal you've ever had but either way, we're off to celebrate."

As the five boys tore into their tee-bone steaks like the little carnivores nature intended them to be, Arlen and I smiled. He sipped his beer and I enjoyed my more than adequate Merlot.

I secretly took pleasure in watching Rico and Charlie try to pretend that they weren't excited about sharing Brian's bed tonight. Loving, caring sexual experience was such a blessing and I (like most people) had sadly gotten mine much later in life than these boys. I was so happy for them.

I knew what was going to happen in Jack's room but I secretly wondered about what was going to happen in Brian's. That might be worth being the proverbial fly on the wall. I knew that Sean had been sexually involved with both of them. I didn't know if Rico and Brian had ever done anything together but I strongly suspected that tonight was going to be an event in Brian's room.

***

The boys were all in the game room mostly playing pool though Sean, Jack and Brian were also attempting to engage their friends in a game of seven-card stud.

I picked up the phone and dialed Chris. "Do you think your Mother and Aunt could spare you tonight?"

I heard him giggle. "Do you still have spare toothbrushes?"

I giggled this time. "Meet you in the parking lot. A couple of drinks and then upstairs yes?"

"I'm halfway out the door, boss."

***

I reveled in the beauty of his hard sleek body as he almost tore his clothes off. His goofy little grin as he pulled off his underpants was almost priceless.

"I'm ready, how come you're not?"

"Because, I want to look at you for a while you beautiful young man."

He smiled and did a pirouette before jumping onto the bed and sprawling himself out almost obscenely.

I'd pretty much come to the conclusion that, as the boys grew into their own lives, it would most likely be Chris who would share my bed and the idea was not at all unattractive to me. The young man was beautiful and enthusiastic and he gave me great pleasure every time we were together.

I took the final sip from the drink I'd brought up from the library and began to unbutton my shirt. "I suspect that you may be in for it tonight my little bro. Is that OK with you?"

He grinned again. "If you can give it, I can take it Boss man."

He was true to his word and we finally fell asleep in the obscenely early hours of the morning.

He was sprawled upon his side of the bed and was snoring but it was actually very cute so I just slid off the mattress and moved to the kitchen alcove and the coffee maker.

I dropped in the paper filter and measured the grounds. Pushing the button to start the brewing process, I walked into the bathroom and brushed my teeth.

The pot was filled when I walked back in and I poured two large mugs and carried them to the side of the bed.

As usual, the aroma got to him and he woke up grimacing and stretching. He finally looked up and grinned. He reached out for his coffee mug and said, "You know that the only reason I let you fuck me is because you make me coffee in the morning right?"

"Oh, for certain Chris."

I decided to do something very different. I walked out into the hallway and shouted, "Who wants a mass shower?"

Receiving no response I walked over to Jack's door and pounded on it. "Mass shower in my bathroom right now!" I walked down the hall to Brian's door and did the same.

Almost at once, the hall was filled with naked little boys shuffling into my big shower, rubbing the sleep from their eyes and giggling as they realized what they were about to do.

I had the water running at a perfect temperature and I said, "Chris and I have shampoo duty. Walk under the spray then come to us and we'll lather you up and then circle around and rinse. When that's done we'll do the same thing with scrubbing you off… one continuous circle got it?"

They happily chuckled and expressed their understanding and we began the process. Chris and I worked soap and shampoo all over five young squirming bodies but we got it done.

I sent them out to dry and then get dressed while Chris and I finally showered ourselves. I leaned in and drew him against me and kissed him. "You're a big part of my future you know."

His smile was warm and tender. "Of course I know and I'm very patient, Eric."

***

Arlen drove Rico and Charlie home and my boys rode with them. The nasty little boy noises that I'd heard from behind the bedroom door had convinced me that four little boys had experienced a very wonderful night in their chosen configurations.

I just grinned as the limo pulled away from the car park.

***

"Its intriguing Eric," Doc Swaim said as he sat in the library with Richard and me.

"According to this documentation, back in May of 1916 (almost a year before America entered World War I) a ship registered under the Argentine banner, the Santa Lucía left Buenos Aires carrying gold and silver bullion secretly provided by American and Canadian supporters of the British and French."

"The Santa Lucía disappeared from history three weeks later. The last communication from her was that she was miles east of Nova Scotia and headed for the North Sea. This documentation Jack has received indicates that the ship was stalked by a German U-Boat and torpedoed. Supposedly, the U-boat commander or his superiors hoped at some point to return bringing deep divers and retrieve the cargo but the United States entered the war and it went badly for Germany."

"The point is Eric, at least the U-boat commander and his second in command knew what the cargo of that ship was. If this information is true, then it's highly probable that other people knew as well."

"Jack's anonymous correspondent is telling him that someone (presumably associated with the University Marine Studies Department) knows about this incident and has (at least) an approximate idea of the sunken ship's location. This person (or persons) somehow coerced, bribed or otherwise convinced the Captain of Jack's lost research ship to go off course to attempt to locate the lost Santa Lucía. This was obviously because of the research ship's sophisticated underwater search equipment."

"Jack's ship should never have been in harm's way and there should have been no tragic loss of life but someone seemingly was (or for that matter, still is), looking for a lucrative prize."

"By today's standards, if the manifest of the Santa Lucía is correct, in her hold lays some two and a half billion dollars in precious bullion, which can be easily moved and cashed-in all over the world. That fortune was certainly worth diverting the research boat out onto storm- threatened seas by someone in order to locate her."

"If the Santa Lucía was sunk while still above the continental shelf, she would be salvageable fairly easily. If she made it into the north sea, a salvage operation would be difficult and expensive. The questions, of course are several."

"First, is the story of the Santa Lucía actually true?"

"Second, are there secret records of where she went down? These would at best be approximate because there were no GPS systems back then."

"Third, are there still people out there who know this story and are looking for the treasure and finally, how responsible are those people for those deaths on Jack's ship? After all, you can't blame anyone for a storm and a rogue wave."

I gathered their glasses and walked to the bar. "Richard, get our best people on this and make certain that they work closely with Professor Swaim. Full research at the highest priority! I'd like some basic answers next week."

"I'm thinking that we might go looking for sunken treasure. I do mean us… I'll want you and Doc along since I'm obviously intending on going on this adventure."

"If we eventually find and recover this trove, we'll put it all into a dedicated account for the Academy… that should certainly contribute to its future. That is, of course, after you guys and the crew that goes with us splits up a twenty percent share of the booty."

"Mostly though, I want to find out about the actual events and motivation behind how I almost lost my redheaded wonder. I won't be able to forgive that."

"Damn Eric, you certainly are becoming a hard ass!"

I actually glared at my trusted head of Skuggor. "Do you consider that inappropriate Richard?"

He actually smiled. "No Sir, you are the Lancelot and you are acting just as you should."

I smiled and tilted my tumbler to them both.

***

I was a bit surprised to find them both on my bed. "We want you to do us both, Dad," Sean grinned.

"Boys, you think too much of me. I could do one of you and then, I'd probably be asleep. You're young boys and you have a hell of a lot more staying power than I do. I'll be happy to suck your sweet cocks but I certainly can't fuck you both tonight."

"Yes you can Dad! You just don't know it. We know you can. I'm so sure, that you fuck Sean first. If you can't do me… then, I'll understand. OK?"

I smiled and felt so loved. "OK you monkeys! I'll do Sean first and then we'll see about you Brian."

"Let's do it this way Dad," Sean said as he got up on his knees with his chest and head resting on the mattress. To my surprise, Brian produced the tube of lube and worked it into Sean's tight hole and then coated my cock.

He grinned from ear to ear. "So Dad, fuck my brother!"

With a half grimace, I moved against Sean's perfectly offered rectum, and with only minimal pressure, I was in and we were doing the lover's dance.

His little body was so wonderful and responsive and I nibbled his ears and kissed all over his young back as we moved against each other… my cock sliding into his hot ass.

I realized that I'd reached the goal post and I whispered to him, "I'm coming, little man."

"Me too, Dad!"

Instantly, his raging hard cock spilled a big-boy dose of jiz out onto the bed. I followed him instantly but my load spilled inside his wonderful young body.

We collapsed onto the bed and I pulled him close to me.

"That was so great to watch guys!" Brian was cuddling against my back.

"You rest a bit, Dad, and then, it's my turn. I know you can do it."

I smiled and reached behind me grasping him to me. "I'll certainly try Brian."

They both wrapped their arms around me and began kissing me all over and I tried to return the favor. I have no idea how long it was but I suspect it was about forty-five minutes before I felt my cock become as hard as a rock. I smiled with a great deal of satisfaction.

'I'm still a young man.' I realized.

I slapped them both sharply on their beautiful little asses. "Up on your knees Brian my son. I'm about to fuck you it seems."

He giggled and rolled over.

"We told you Dad," Sean said with a chuckle as he lubed up his brother's rectum and then re-greased my very hard cock.

In the end, we collapsed into a loving and erotic group embrace and we fell asleep.

***

It was certainly going to be an interesting week.

Sean was scheduled to do his first take-off on Friday and then he and Brian had their second play-off game. They'd won the first rather dominantly at six to two. Brian was scheduled to pitch this time so I anticipated a bit of family excitement.

We'd had a wonderful celebration pool party and cook-out two weeks ago and I felt it had been a great bonding and encouragement event for the team.

They'd become very close over the season and were excited to be going into the play-offs. They were a wonderful and funny group of boys.

Jack had a scheduled check up with Doctor Sam on Wednesday, and I, of course, was waiting for information on the treasure ship.

Chris had told me that his mother and aunt would love to move here but felt they'd be cramping his and his neighbor's style if they moved into his condo. I privately sighed in relief over that news because that particular compound was really intended to be a male habitat. Two older women might have made it uncomfortable for Richard, Barry and Uncle Phil.

I countered with the offer of one of the new condos being built at the north end of the property and after a rather brief discussion, they'd accepted tearfully. I thought to myself that in about another three months, those homes were going to be filled with lively and valuable tenants.

***

"Well Jack, You are recovering remarkably well. I have to tell you that there is still enough residual shrapnel in you to set off an alarm at the airport but we'll take care of that in one simple operation in a few months. From what I can tell, your ear is also healing as we hoped so I expect hearing to begin returning very shortly."

My boy smiled at him. "Thanks Doctor Sam. How long do you think before I can be boxing and other rough stuff again?"

"Well, Jack, if you continue to heal like you have been, I'd guess about three months."

The red haired wonder broke into a large grin. "That sounds great Doctor Sam. Thanks."

"Don't thank me Jack; thank your body for healing so well."

The boy was sitting totally naked on the doctor's examination table without a qualm. nest boys had no sense of shame or concern about being naked. I privately wondered if the Doctor found that unusual or disconcerting.

"Thank you Sam. I'll be in touch about a pool party in a couple of weeks. I and the boys would certainly enjoy your company."

"Thanks Eric. I know my wife would really love that."

***

"Eric, you can't be in the plane for this because I need Sean's complete attention to be on the task at hand. He's flawless on the flight simulator but this will be his first real take-off. You get to watch from the ground."

Will and Sean had already done their walk around and my little boy was so excited that I thought he didn't even remember that I was there.

I was surprised when he ran up to me and hugged me tightly. I pulled him close and kissed his head so as not to embarrass him. "I love you, little man. Do well and have a good time."

"Thanks Dad. I love you so much that I can't even tell ya'"

Tears were literally pouring from my eyes as the little Cessna sped down the runway and gracefully took to the sky.

That was Sean that did that, I thought. My little boy just took off in his own plane.

After they'd landed, he was so excited that he was jumping.

"Dad… Dad that was so cool! I never thought I'd be able to do that! An' in two weeks, Will says that I'm gonna land. Then I'm really a pilot though I gotta wait to be old enough for my license. I love you so much for letting me learn to do this Dad! I love you so much!"

He was actually spinning around me as he hugged my waist and I smiled broadly down at him. "So I take it that you enjoyed that did you, little man?"

He rewarded me with a Sean Smile and I pulled him into a tight hug.

***

The four of us were sitting around in the library like miserable little children. Out of nowhere, the skies had opened up and the rain was torrential. Our part of the country drains slowly so the baseball game was canceled.

Jack and Brian were enjoying a beer while Sean and I were sipping single malt and trying to decide how to spend the day… a pretty hard decision when you live in a place like Joyous Gaurde.

It was Jack who reminded us that there was an indoor pool. "let's start learnin' our new minnow here how to swim properly."

"Great idea Jack! You two teach and I'll be the lifeguard."

My three beautiful sons, naked and happy were in the water. They were working on the breast stroke with Brian and he was a quick learner essentially because he was such a natural athlete. I sat at the side of the pool watching and thinking how lucky I was to be able to have these three boys share their lives with me.

"We'll work on the crawl next time Brian," Jack said as the three of them climbed out of the pool. You'll be good enough to make the swim team next year. little brother. You learn stuff so fast."

They walked off to the showers and I choked back tears. These three loved each other so much. It reminded me of how much I had loved and treasured Kyle.

The thought brought a terror to me. Please no… don't let anything happen to one of my boys! You've taken so much from me. No more please.

The morose attitude ended quickly as they walked out of the showers giggling and joking as they dried off.

I looked at them. They were all so beautiful

Jack was almost a man but still very much a boy. Brian was still taller than Sean was but his 'bits' were actually slightly smaller than Sean's. Sean was obviously just on the cusp of a growth spurt and still the apple of my eye.

My god but I loved them!

***

"So, we now know that the story of the Santa Lucía is true. We even know the number of the U-boat that sank her. We now have the approximate coordinates for where she went down."

Doctor Swaim and Richard smiled at me. "So Richard, do we have ships? Do we have a navy or something like that?"

He grinned. "No Eric, we certainly don't have a navy but we do have ships."

"Do we have any ships that might be capable of this type of salvage search and recovery?"

"Way ahead of you, Boss. Our ship the Magnolia is almost purposed designed for this job. She's unfortunately stationed in Portland. I've already ordered her to move here. All things considered, she'll be through the canal and sailing up the east coast in about three weeks."

I grinned across at him. "You know Richard; you are getting very good at your job."

He smiled back at me. "Thanks boss. Does that mean that the Professor and me get another drink?"

I don't know who laughed louder… me or Doc.

"Hell boys, we're going treasure hunting how do you feel about that?"

"Arrrr!" they replied in their best Robert Newton impressions.

"OK then, I guess we need to wait for our ship."

Chapter 28

There are two ways of thinking about the future; Anticipation or anxiety.
When we anticipate, we are often timorous but we are at the same time excited and hoping for the best. When we look forward with anxiety, we are also afraid but besides that, we are worried and expecting the worst.
Always be anticipating what is coming because it might just be something wonderful.
Anticipate, always anticipate.

The Magnolia's voyage from Oregon to the Maritimes was almost textbook. She'd traveled at a pretty consistent 21 knots which was impressive for a ship her size. It had taken her seven days from Portland to the mouth of the canal and 8 hours to travel from the Pacific to the Atlantic. The ship then traveled up the eastern shoreline. It had taken an impressive eight days but she was now anchored in Halifax and we were preparing to fly out to her.

I'd had several meetings with Doc Swaim and Richard. I first proposed bringing none of the boys but then, remembering my promise to Jack, I insisted on him coming along and then, I'd decided that all three of them should come to share the adventure. Also of course, because Doc was coming on this treasure hunt, their education could continue.

"All of our personal equipment is already on-board the Magnolia Eric and she is a state of the art research vessel. Doc has already forwarded all of the location information that we have to the Skipper and his crew. We have three remote control submersibles and one manned mini-sub on the ship, plus the very latest in sonar and sounding equipment. There's also a helicopter on her deck. There's not much more that we could bring into the search, Boss."

"Thanks Richard. We'll have dinner at six and then we're off to the airport. I want Barry, Wolfman and Brutus on constant alert and if they lose communication with us for more than a half an hour, I expect Skuggor in the air and at our side. Do you have an adequate force in the Maritimes?"

He huffed. "Eric, do you go out of your way to insult me? I've got a major force available and on instant call. Don't forget, it's my ass that could be in danger out there too."

We all laughed and I told Richard that it was his turn to make the drinks.

***

The three boys hugged Martha after dinner and they seemed a bit teary-eyed. Sean muttered, "We'll be back pretty soon Mrs. Edwards but we'll sure miss you."

I was so bothered by his reaction that I pulled him aside. "Sean, would you feel better staying here?"

"N-no Dad," he was blinking back tears. "I j-just think that I hate leaving the people that I love so much but you and my brothers are the people that I love the most, so I wanna be with you guys."

"OK. little man, if you truly want to go on this cruise, you and your brothers go grab your travel bags and let's head out to the van."

John was still looking a bit morose. He'd wanted to come along but as a newlywed with a baby now on the way, I wouldn't hear of it. "You've got responsibilities now John and besides that, your folks are moving into their condo in two weeks and you need to be there to welcome and help them."

"I know you're right but I'd still sure like to be part of this Eric."

"Not this time, my good friend," I said as I patted his shoulder.

***

Though smaller jets don't cruise as fast as the big airliner planes, they really make up for time in quicker take-offs and of course, not having to change planes once or twice on a long flight.

All of us had a couple of drinks with the exception of Sean who was seated in the cockpit watching and chatting with Captain Lucas and his co-pilot Billy Ruiz.

Eventually we all began to tire because long nighttime flights are essentially boring. I reclined in my seat and Brian soon cuddled up next to me. Jack and Richard had both fallen asleep next to each other. Their friendship wasn't sexual but more like a brotherly regard. They simply liked each other a lot.

"Move over you guys and let me in!" It was Sean returned from the cockpit and wanting into the cuddle.

Brian moved to the seat closest to the window, I moved to the middle and Sean jumped in next to me. Very soon, we were huddled against each other and not long past that, we were fast asleep. We didn't even wake up when the jet landed and re-fueled.

I didn't wake until our steward gently woke us so that he could serve breakfast which we ate while we were beginning our slow descent into Halifax.

I'd arraigned for transport and we all were quickly in the car and soon entered the Prince George Hotel. The boys and I had a suite and Doc and Richard had private rooms. Nothing mattered at that point except going to sleep. The master bedroom in our suite had a king-sized bed and the four of us just collapsed onto it and we were asleep in moments.

***

We all ate a hearty breakfast before being transported to the Magnolia.

None less than the Captain himself greeted us at the gangway. He surely knew who I was and where his level in the pecking order fell. Despite that, he was very professional.

"Mr. Tucker, welcome aboard I am Captain Corcoran"

As I grasped his hand, I broke into a grin. "Why Captain, I thought this ship was the Magnolia not the HMS Pinafore."

He guffawed as he said, "Well not many people make that connection these days but I assure you that this is a real ship and she is the Magnolia."

I introduced Doc, Richard and the three boys. He of course recognized who Richard was and he was respectfully diffident.

"Your crew is to work closely with Doctor Swaim and Richard. The boys will be involved in this search but, most specifically, it will be Jack. The two younger boys will be involved in this voyage as is appropriate. They'll most likely be given assignments by Doctor Swaim who is their tutor. I'd like, captain, for you to assign someone on your crew to supervise these young boys as well. A ship at sea can be dangerous after all."

He nodded his head and beckoned two uniformed men to his side. "This, (he indicated a tall dark-haired young man) is first officer Paul Genese, and he'll be your liaison with the search team. This (again he indicated a unformed young man who seemed very young, tall and blond haired) is second officer Mark Balutto and he'll be your boys' constant companion.

I nodded. "So Captain, you have a full knowledge of what we're looking for and what we're expecting? Do you have any questions or problems?"

"No Sir. You are Lancelot and orders don't come from any higher. Besides that, this is a pretty exciting voyage."

"Remember also that you and the crew will share in twenty percent of anything we recover."

He smiled. "That's certainly an incentive for success I'd say."

We were all in the wheelhouse as we pulled away from Halifax.

"I'm rather glad that our course is steering us away from Sable Island. That's known as the graveyard of the north Atlantic. There have been something like 480 shipwrecks there. It's safer that we're heading east."

I grimaced and thanked the captain for his information.

We ate a rather hearty if basic dinner in the galley and then headed off to sleep.

As we were heading off to the cabins, Jack pulled me aside. "Would it be alright if I shared a cabin with Richard Dad?"

I smiled and brushed my hand down his flushed cheek. "Of course it would be alright Jack."

He smiled sweetly and kissed me softly. "Goodnight Dad."

"Good night Jack."

I wondered if the friendship between Richard and Jack was blossoming into something further. Perhaps my boy just wanted to spend time with the man that he considered his mentor. Whatever was happening was all right with me. I just wanted Jack to be happy and I knew that he was confused sexually.

It was late the following day that we stopped and considered lowering the submersibles the next morning. We were at the approximate co-ordinates that the torpedo had sunk the Santa Lucía all those years ago.

We sat around a table looking at charts and decided that tomorrow we'd set the subs in a radial direction and get a scan of the immediate are. We didn't have a great expectation of finding anything this first try, but who knew what could happen.

Sean and Brian were in my cabin naked and grinning. The bed was really too small for the three of us but they insisted it would be just fine and I caved in because I loved them so. The boys didn't like sleeping alone and, for that matter, neither did I.

I awoke rather early the next morning, dressed quickly and walked up to the deck. The rising sun was a large blazing hot red ball as it slowly but persistently climbed above the watery horizon.

Sunrises weren't something we spent much time enjoying back at Joyous Gaurde… we were a sunset part of the country. I was watching the dawn with great appreciation.

There was a tap on my shoulder. I turned and it was Sean. "Here Dad, I thought you'd want this." He handed me a mug of coffee. I accepted it and one arm hugged him against me.

"Thank you Sean. I didn't even think about it. Did you sleep well last night?"

"Dad, I always sleep well when I'm with you." He squeezed up against me and sipped his mug of coffee. "You know, I can understand why Jack loves the ocean so much. It's really beautiful an' you kinna' feel like you're all alone on the whole planet.

"Well, Sean, I hope you guys enjoy this little adventure. The ocean is very large and often unpredictable as Jack found out on his last voyage. That's why I don't want you or Brian going anywhere on this ship without Mark. OK?"

He wiggled against me because Sean couldn't be still very long without wiggling. "Yea Dad, we both understand an' besides that, Mark is cool so, we won't mind."

"Let's go down to the galley and get some breakfast then you can go and wake up Brian."

"That's a deal Dad!" He grinned and took my hand. He was still my loving little boy, and I just simply adored him

The team of young men hunched over the monitors as skilled operators maneuvered the three submersibles across the eerie underwater terrain. Doc, Jack and Richard were in the room keeping constant watch and making suggestions. I was more or less in and out. I felt that I also needed to spend time with the two young boys and I frankly didn't have a clue what those guys were doing. I felt like a third wheel on a bicycle.

The sun was setting behind us and the two little boys were clutching the rails. The ocean environment was still new enough to them that they were fascinated.

"Mister Tucker!" a young seaman was running in my direction. "They want you in the control room Sir!"

"Thank you. Boys, let's head down to the control room."

"It is almost impossible but by Christ I think we've found it." Doc Swaim was grinning like a kid on Christmas morning.

I looked at the monitor and surely, it showed a much-deteriorated freighter nestled broken against the rocky bottom.

"We'll launch the manned submersible in the morning," Captain Corcoran said.

"We couldn't have been this lucky so quickly, could we?"

"Well Eric, someone has to be lucky on every given day… yes?" Doc was smiling and he took the Captain's shoulder.

"Drinks in my cabin men. Yes Erick, we made certain that you're favorite Hibernian hooch is well stocked on this boat so you won't need to be petulant."

I thought to myself that since I was financing this voyage. I certainly should have been considered but I kept that thought silently.

Doc's cabin was crowded but we all found places and enjoyed our 'Happy Hour'.

***

Paul was going to drive the submarine and I insisted that Jack was going to be his partner. I felt that Jack had the right to be a major part in this discovery. My young red head was so excited that he almost couldn't eat his breakfast.

Bundled up warmly due to the cold water temperature they'd be entering, Jack and Paul climbed into the small submarine and were slowly lowered by winch over the side and they almost casually sank below the surface.

We all gathered in the command room around the video monitor and watched with anticipation.

The sunken ship was highly deteriorated. Salt water relentlessly destroys land built ships. It wasn't like the Titanic because that ship had sunk a few years earlier but, the Santa Lucía was slowly being consumed by the salt sea.

After twenty minutes, it was obvious that the ship was lying on her port side and the little sub made an entrance through one of her hatches which lay open ostensibly so that crew could evacuate.

The small sub made a slow and cautious journey through the bowels of the fallen vessel and eventually made its way into the cargo hold. Almost immediately, the bars of precious metal came into view and we all gave a high five. This had turned out to be much easier than I'd anticipated.

"The access is so easy that starting tomorrow, we'll launch the remote subs and retrieve the bars," Captain Corcoran said as we were receiving the little manned sub.

"We found it Dad!" Jack was in my arms and ecstatic. "I've never done anything this cool! Thank you for making this possible. I'm going to love you forever!"

"Well Jack, before this voyage, I was planning on loving you forever."

He blushed an almost bright crimson. "Dad… you know what I meant."

I hugged him tightly and almost whispered, "Jack, of course I do and I also understand your excitement."

"I guess you and me can't go to bed on this ship since the little boys are in your cabin."

"Probably not Jack, but since we've found the treasure ship so quickly, we'll be back at Joyous Gaurde sooner than we anticipated and you and I can share loving pleasure then.

He smiled and kissed me.

***

The submersibles were slowly but methodically raising the bullion from the wreck to our ship. Jack was having a good time controlling one of the little vessels and it seemed like there was almost a race going on in the command room.

Dinner was hearty and I quickly made my way to my cabin with my two little boys. We huddled together and before I fell asleep, I smiled as I enjoyed their smells and sounds as they cuddled and fell asleep in bed with me.

The dark silhouette standing above me was unexpected. "We've taken this ship and we need you on deck right now."

"What the fuck?…" suddenly I felt a blow against the side of my face.

"Now! On deck!"

Naked and confused, the two boys and I left our cabin and up the short staircase to the main deck.

The bulk of the crew was gathered in a group cowering against a bulkhead. I noticed Doc Swaim was kneeling over a fallen person that I soon realized was Richard. Kneeling beside him was Jack weeping in total despair.

My boy looked up and saw me and jumped to his feet to race to my side but, as he did so, a strange man struck him over the head with the butt of an AK 47. My red haired wonder collapsed to the deck like a rag doll.

I moved to go to him. "Slowly and carefully mister. The wrong move could mean your life."

I nodded to the speaker and then walked over and knelt beside Jack. He was breathing and there was no sign of blood so I assumed he'd simply been knocked out. Of course, he was most likely suffering from a concussion but it didn't seem life threatening.

"Doc, how is Richard?" I called out.

"Pretty badly beaten up," Doc Swaim replied. "I'm rather certain that he'll recover though I do wish we could get him to a hospital."

"Yes, your friend there gave us quite a fight. He took out four of my men before we could beat him senseless." These words were spoken by a short fat man who swaggered towards me.

I thought to myself that they'd obviously surprised Richard before he could get to his gun or else he'd have taken out more than four of them.

I looked over the side of our ship and saw a large luxury private yacht obviously tethered to our ship and assumed that was how these marauders had gotten on board our vessel.

"So then, Mister Tucker isn't it? I just want to thank you for doing all this work for me. I've been after this prize for over twenty years but I never had the financial resources to finance a search expedition."

"When I learned that the University was sending a research ship up to the Maritimes, I finally had my chance. I bribed the Captain and the First Mate to go off-course and do some soundings around a specific area… this very area if the truth be known but, they got caught in a storm and knocked over by a rogue wave."

"I thought that my chance was over until I found out that, your son, Jack, was on that cruise and that he'd survived. I began emailing him slowly at first… presenting myself as a fellow student and ardent admirer of Doctor Chambers. As time went by, I gradually filled him in on the part truth that his university ship had been diverted on purpose and, in the end, I filled in most of the missing pieces even supplying the German U-Boat co-ordinates for the sinking."

I SO hoped young Jack would share this information with you because I knew that you certainly had the resources to finance this type of treasure hunt. It turns out that I was correct and now, here we are."

"Who the hell are you?" I almost spat out the words.

"Not that you have any need to know, but my name is Kyler Moss. I'm a history professor at the University and that's actually how I stumbled upon the tale of the Santa Lucía. Now that your crew is subdued, I'll allow you to be escorted back to your cabins. Tomorrow, your able crew will continue to recover the bullion from below and then assist in transferring it all to the rather spiffy yacht I've rented."

"By the way, I do have to compliment your crew for being so compassionate in helping a private little ship in distress and allowing us to come alongside. After that, taking over your vessel was rather easy work."

I thought to myself that it shouldn't have been so easy to take over a Skuggor ship but then I realized that this was a Magnus Veritas ship not specifically a Skuggor vessel.

"So then Mr. Moss, what happens after all of the gold and silver is recovered?"

"Sadly, it will take a few bullets but then your ship will be sailed to the west and scuttled… yet another victim off the Coast of Sable Island… the grave yard of the North Atlantic."

"You would do such a thing?"

He actually smirked. "My share in this will be over a billion dollars Mr. Tucker. For that much money, I'd slaughter my entire family."

Jack began moving in my arms and I turned my attention to him. He moaned for a few moments and then his eyes opened. As expected, his look was one of confusion so I talked softly and soothingly to him as he came into full consciousness.

Without asking permission but moving cautiously, Sean walked across the deck and knelt down beside Jack. His little naked body looked so frail on the deck of this now dangerous ship on an evil sea. He placed Jack's head upon his leg and softly stroked his hair as he whispered soft consoling words to his lifelong friend.

Moss swaggered like a bad movie pirate and said, "Take them all below and lock them up except for this one…" He pointed at Richard. "Him, just throw overboard right now. He's been too costly to us."

Two of the invaders (dare I call them pirates?) moved forward and lifted Richard from the deck knocking Doc Swaim hard against the head in the process.

"NO! No you fuckin bastards no!" It was Brian and he flew across the deck and seized one of the two men who were manhandling Richard by the neck and was trying to bring him down.

The other man dropped Richard's legs and moved forward to attempt to subdue Brian. I rushed forward to assist my little boy and almost simultaneously, a man stepped forward with a pistol pointed at Brian's chest.

I heard the explosion just as a harsh blow to my head brought me into darkness.

Chapter 29

If you believe in yourself and have dedication and pride – and never quit, you'll be a winner. The price of victory is high but so are the rewards.
No matter what has happened to you in the past or what is going on in your life right now, it has no power to keep you from having an amazingly good future.

I was very confused as my eyes opened up to gaze upon a blazing blue sky. I blinked several times and my memory became whole. As that happened, I was terrified about what I might soon be learning.

"Please lay still Sir. You've suffered minor head trauma and sudden movements could complicate things."

The voice was familiar. Suddenly, so was the face. He was one of the four doctors who had so patiently put up with my boorish behavior while at the same time guiding me back to health after my 'joyride over the cliff in my Jaguar'.

"Mohamed?"

The face above me smiled. "I'm very pleased that you recognized me Lancelot. Yes, I'm the same Doctor who you considered such a pain in the ass after your plunge over the precipice a short time ago. You certainly lead an interestingly active life. I don't suppose suggesting that you stay home and spend your time reading would do any good with you would it Sir?"

I giggled and then cringed as my head hurt so badly that I thought it would crack open. "Mohamed, tell me what happened."

"If you promise to lie still and just listen I'll tell you everything I know… yes?"

I didn't even try to nod my head. I just mouthed the word; 'yes'. "I learned last time not to say 'no' to any of the four of you."

He smiled down at me. "Well at least for now, you've only got to contend with me although you'll discover that Joseph is on duty at the infirmary back at Joyous Gaurde. Now be still and I'll tell you what we know so far…

"Sometime in the middle of the night, a private yacht drifted alongside your ship and issued a distress call indicating that the ship had lost all power and had been drifting for several days only coming upon your ship by the kindness of the tide. Suspecting nothing wrong, your night crew threw them a few lines and pulled them alongside.

"Their kindness was repaid by treachery and the night crew was quickly overwhelmed and as the rest of the pirates climbed on board, the ship was quickly invaded. Most of the crew just surrendered… after all, they aren't trained Skuggor but Richard… 'Galahad' is and though he was asleep and naked, he killed four of the invaders as they broke into his cabin.

"Eventually, of course, they overcame him and beat him near to death. He is stable now and we've already flown him back to the mainland. We intend to bring him to one of our own medical facilities. Unless he sustained more severe internal injuries than we suspected after triage, he should be fine.

"They worked quickly taking over the ship but you had wisely set a thirty minute limitation on lack of contact and a group of Skuggor helicopters was launched from the mainland promptly.

"Obviously, all of our copters have 'feather technology' and can hover with almost perfect silence. As they looked down and saw the yacht tethered to the Magnolia, they launched a half dozen 'shadow flies' to ascertain the situation. It was immediately obvious that the Magnolia had been taken.

"The Skuggor were preparing a rather standard three-point attack to re-take the ship when almost at the same time, it became obvious that the pirates were preparing to dump Richard… excuse me… 'Galahad' overboard."

I tried to clear my mind. "And Jack?"

He scowled and nodded his head. "Severe concussion. That man really clobbered him. He's also being flown to our medical facility and truly I'm certain of a full recovery."

"How about Doctor Swaim?"

"He's fine, Sir. Some bruises but no broken bones and as he is fond of saying; nothing that a 'Jack and water' won't cure."

I swallowed deeply and then asked the question I was so afraid to ask, "Brian… what about Brian?"

I could tell by his face that he didn't want to answer that question.

"So, they brought you all on deck and grouped you together. They apparently declared their intention to kill Richard and brave little Brian ran in to his aid. They shot him in the stomach the cowardly bastards! A twelve year-old boy and they shot him!"

He lost all of his professionalism and began to sob. He wiped his eyes and took a deep breath. "He was alive when we put him in the helicopter and by now, he should be under the surgeon's knife."

"Almost the same time that they shot Brian, a Skuggor helicopter dropped a concussion grenade onto the ship which of course, knocked everyone to the deck. Taking back the ship was relatively easy."

I smiled. "May I get up on my feet Mohamed?"

He smiled back. "If you CAN, then you may sir."

I rose slowly and noticed that my headache was rather considerable. I smiled quietly and decided that Doc Swaim already knew the best cure for that. "Who is in command of this operation Mohamed?"

"Skuggor Level 10 William Sir."

"Please have him meet me in my cabin and, Mohamed, I feel like you've saved my life once again."

He smiled and nodded. "Protecting Lancelot is the prime duty of every Skuggor. Nothing else matters."

"Sean! Where is Sean?"

"He's fine and below deck with Doctor Swaim. We told him that he couldn't be near you while we were treating you. Little boys can get in the way, Sir. He's totally fine but of course, frightened and confused."

I found my little boy and he rushed to cling against me. "Dad, why did these guys do this to us?"

"Because they're evil greedy men, Sean. Sadly, you'll be dealing with men like this your whole life. The way to deal with them is to get rid of them and that's what we're going to do."

There was a knock on my cabin door. "Sir, I'm William Sir. I am of course at your service."

"William thank you for your expedient service to my family and me. Now, I need for you to help clean up this mess. The Crew of the Magnolia will continue to recover the sunken bullion. You William will have this rented yacht of theirs sailed just off the coast of Sable Island. Make certain that the crew of pirates are all bound, and then scuttle the yacht. I don't want there to be any survivors"

I'd reserved a few of the invaders for individual punishment.

First was the man who had shot Brian. He was terrified as he was dragged before me.

"My son may or may not live but you shot him like he was a rabbit or a game cock… you shot him for no reason except he was showing compassion for his friend. He is a twelve year old boy you fucking monster!

"A grown man shooting a naked twelve year old boy… how much more of a worthless piece of shit can you be? You shot him just because you could, you cowardly scumbag! I'm going to keep you alive until we learn if my son lives or dies. If he lives, then you'll live as well but you'll live without your balls and without the ability to do anything like this again.

"If Brian dies, then you'll die but it will be slow and very cruel. I promise you that the last thing you'll do on this earth is scream. My name is Eric Tucker and I assure you that 'Tucker Justice' is swift and without mercy."

"William, strip him and bind him. He's to go to the 'Steel Cunt'"

The next was the man who had clubbed down Jack. He'd heard what I'd said to the man who shot Brian and the fear was all over his face. "Mister, Mister… I only done it because I thought he was trying to do something that was gonna get him shot! Honest, I was really trying to keep him safe… I didn't want him t' get shot. He's just a boy! You seen it yourself. These guys, they don't care about shootin' children. Mister, you gotta believe me, I knocked him down to pre'tect him. They'd a shot him Mister. I'm sorry that he's hurt but Mister… ain't that better than bein' dead?"

Tears were streaming down his face and I decided that either he was a wonderfully talented actor or he was being honest and sincere.

My decision as to his fate changed at once. I thought about the island and decided that would be appropriate for this man. "I believe you and so, you will have your life and your manhood."

When he realized what I'd just said, he collapsed on the deck and crawled to my feet bawling like a little baby, He grasped my right foot and murmured, "Mister… thank you Mister… thank you."

"You'll never be free again but your life will not be terrible. You'll be taken to an island in the South Pacific and you'll work as a groundskeeper for a private resort. You'll be out in the sun and you'll have lots of time off. To many people, the prison I'm sending you to would be like a life-long vacation. I'm doing this because I believe you and therefore thank you for saving my son's life though I detest your method of doing it."

As he was taken away he was sobbing. "Thank you Mister… thank you Mister."

It turned out that the man who had punched me in my cabin was the same man who'd clubbed me on the deck. He was surprisingly little. In a fair fight, I could have easily kicked his ass. He was putting on a brave face but I knew that there was terror lying just below the surface.

"You are a dead man. I suspect you know that. What remains to be determined is how horrible your death will be."

"Who gives a shit you rich mother-fucker? You grew up calling all the shots. Well, last night, I got to call the shots and you had to do what I wanted you to do. I got to control your whole life even if just for a few hours."

"Did you enjoy that? You'd never met me before. I've never done anything to you or for you for that matter. Did you enjoy being cruel to me, my sons and my crew?"

I suspect I'd confused him.

"Yah. I fuckin' enjoyed it."

"I'm glad that you got some pleasure at the end of your life. You'll join your gang on the sadly doomed yacht but not before I return a favor to you."

I was surprised at the strength of my blow to the side of his head. I remembered the old French expression; a bon chat, a bon rat.

The Skuggor dragged him off and onto the yacht. Shortly, it pulled away from the Magnolia. I watched the yacht that was soon to never be seen again above the water.

Finally, Doctor Kyler Moss was brought in.

"Well Professor, how am I supposed to deal with a man who threatened and injured my family?"

He smirked. "In this particular case Mr. Tucker, I'd suggest a fair share in the loot. I was hoping for fifty percent but my little scheme failed and you are the victor but sir; I did most of the research and you simply had the technology at hand. I'm sincerely sorry if your little son dies but he certainly behaved imprudently don't you agree?"

I held myself under tight control because I already knew what was going to happen so I allowed him to be smug and arrogant.

"Well, Doctor Moss, your dream of a billion dollars isn't going to happen but I am going to allow you three bars of gold bullion. That's a good bit more than a hundred thousand dollars. William, would you bring them out for the good Doctor?"

William returned with three canvass bags each containing a brick of gold bullion. " These are each about 28 pounds of gold Doctor Moss. Grace the Doctor with his loot William."

William quickly looped the straps over the man's shoulders.

He smiled at me and said, "I assume that one of your helicopters will take me to the mainland Mr. Tucker?"

I smiled and indicated the door. "Actually Doctor Moss, I'm afraid you're going to have to swim. William would you be so kind as to show the good Doctor the exit? I'll accompany you."

The big Skuggor commander grasped the suddenly baffled man and in a quick motion, turned him over the rail and into the ocean. His face was completely baffled because he thought he had been in complete control.

I actually hated the fact that I enjoyed his terror as the 84 pounds of gold slung to his body pulled him under the surface. His eyes were almost imploring as he sank below the water. No one would ever get away with threatening my family. No one would ever survive such an attempt.

***

Our helicopter landed at the Skuggor medical location and we three hurried into the facility.

Jack was awake and totally lucid. Sean ran to his side and hugged him as he cried, "Rufus, Rufus, what would I do without you?"

"Tadpole, don't you ever worry about that. I'll never leave you alone." They hugged and wept and I didn't even attempt to interject myself into their reunion.

I moved on in order to see how Richard was doing. My god but he looked like Hell.

He had been beaten so badly. His face looked like chopped meat. He was being kept under a morphine drip so he certainly wasn't awake.

I gently stroked his forehead (the only place he seemed to not have been beaten.) I leaned in and kissed him. My brave Galahad had damned near died trying to save us.

I couldn't stop sobbing but I had to see my little Brian.

Sean was already there and he was crying softly as he leaned over the rail of the hospital bed. "D-Dad, how could someone have done this? How could somebody be that mean? Brian ain't never done anything but be good and gentle an' brave. He's never done nothin' but be good an' friendly to everyone."

"He was only tryin' to save Richard… they were gonna kill him. Brian was tryin' to save him. Is he gonna die for that Dad? Is Brian gonna die?"

"I don't know Sean but I certainly hope not. We need to have faith and hope. Brian is strong and I trust he'll be able to survive this. The man that did this has already been punished. I should have allowed you to be part of that, but Doctor Swaim needed you at that time."

He nodded his teary head and then bent over his brother crying like the world was going to end.

"Come with me Sean, we need to eat and then we need to sleep. The world will be better after that. I promise."

The dining room in the Skuggor medical center was actually excellent and the beef stew we selected was astonishingly delicious.

After we'd eaten, I took my little boy up to our rather mediocre room. I helped him remove his shirt and then pulled down his shorts. His boxer briefs followed down his legs and over his feet. I held him tightly against me as I filled the bathtub with hot water. I raised him up and lowered him into the warmness.

He sighed as he sank into the comfort of the bath but very soon, he began to sob. Everything that had happened sank into him and he could not handle his sorrow and his anger.

"Did you kill them Dad?"

I ran my hand down his little back and replied softly, "Yes Sean. Yes I did."

He smiled with a funny look in his eyes. "Good. That's good Dad. People like that don't deserve to be alive. We didn't do nothin' to them. They didn't have no right to try an' do anything to us."

I closed my eyes and thought that I was surely looking at the future Lancelot… the future of 'Magnus Venatus' the head of the family. My wonderful little boy had what it took to eventually control this large empire.

Jack would control the Skuggor and (if he lived) Brian would oversee the financial web that had been created… 'Magnus Venatus' controlled by three brothers. My father would smile at that prospect.

I guided him out of the little tub and gently dried him off as he limply stood before me. "It's a little bed so we'll be cramped I'm sorry to say."

He reached up and pulled me down into a kiss. "We'll be together Dad ain't that good enough?"

"Yes Son… that's good enough."

I placed him on the bed and climbed alongside and wrapped him in my arms. He was my sun and moon. He was the total reason for living. This little boy was why I was still alive. I hugged him to me tightly and kissed him furiously.

As I hugged Sean I realized that Jack was alright. Richard was probably going to recover. Brian was questionable and therefore, the greatest concern. I breathed in the sweet smell of boy as I clutched my little Sean against me and amazingly, sleep overtook me swiftly.

***

"It's rather wonderful, almost miraculous news, Eric. The bullet didn't even nick a major organ and entirely missed his spine. It just went through his body without doing any major damage. After some rather minimal care and lots of bed rest, Brian should make a complete recovery. Our major concerns are infection and his rather substantial loss of blood."

"We have him on painkillers and an IV. We're hoping that morphine won't be necessary but a stomach wound can be extremely painful."

"Doctor Mohamed, you're like a good luck charm. I'm thinking about having you permanently assigned to Joyous Gaurde."

"That would be you're call Sir."

"Thank you. May I see him now?"

"Yes sir. I think that will please him a great deal."

Typically, Sean burst into the room. Brian was sitting up in his bed and his smile was almost an answer to every question.

"So Baby Boy, how are you doing?"

"Dad, I'm doing fine 'specially since I was pretty sure I was dead."

His grin was like sunshine on a cold winter day.

I rubbed his shoulder. "I love you little boy. More than you can ever know."

He had tears in his eyes now as he looked up at me. "Oh, I think I do know Dad and I hope you know how much I love you and my brothers. It would sure have been a gyp if that guy had killed me. I'd have missed out on everything."

I didn't want to sob but it was unstoppable and soon I was weeping as I held him closely.

Sean was standing close by rubbing my back and Brian's arm.

"Ain't nobody that can beat Spider… not nobody."

Then he burst into tears. I suspected he'd held himself together as long as he could and now that he saw his brothers were all right, he simply lost it.

I clutched his little body close to me and we cried together while poor little Brian sat in his hospital bed trying to comfort us in any way he could.

What irony eh?

***

Now that I knew Brian was alright. I sent a message to 'Slida av Stil' (the steel cunt) and ordered the man who had shot Brian to be castrated and then, the thumb on his primary hand be removed. He was then to be brought to a remote part of the desert and released with a hundred dollars placed in his pockets.

I thought to myself that if he made it out of the desert, he could buy himself a few beers to toast his lost man-hood and if I ever found out that he'd learned to handle a pistol with his other hand, I'd have the other thumb taken off and perhaps his cock as well.

This was as close to mercy as I could allow myself to display.

The anger and hatred inside me was only beginning to dissipate

Doc Swaim and I sat together enjoying a drink. "The bullion is almost entirely retrieved and it will be taken to Jacksonville, Florida where we'll convert it to cash. Our crew will receive twenty-five percent shared equally between them. That's about 625 million between a crew of thirty. Every member of this crew shared in the danger and the work They should have comfortable lives if they're careful."

"The rest of the money will be put into an account to support the nest. That should be enough of an endowment that my financial support should need to be minimal in the future. Our people will manage the annuity and the Academy should actually be able to stand on its own financially."

There was a knock on my door and I opened it to find Jack standing there.

I wondered if I could hold back my tears as I drew him into my arms. "My sweet son." I managed to mutter as my face was pressed against his shoulder. I couldn't keep from weeping after all. He stood placidly as my body heaved in relieved sobbing against him.

As I finally calmed down, he took my hand and kissed it softly. "I actually came down here to see if I could get a beer."

I wiped my eyes and grinned. "Not great choices here Jack. It's mostly Budweiser or Bud Light."

"Isn't there an old saying about 'any old port in a storm' Dad?"

I smiled as I opened a cold Bud and poured it into a glass. He soon was seated next to me and we were pulled into a tight hug.

"We're going to fly home tomorrow. Richard needs to recover a bit longer so, he'll stay here for a while. Things will get back to normal, I promise."

He grinned at me. "Nothing this year has been normal Dad,"

I returned his smile and kissed him. "That's certainly true son."

***

I was aboard a Skuggor helicopter to watch the sinking of the yacht off the coast of Sable Island. She sank quickly and all hands on board assuredly perished quickly as well.

We then returned to the mainland I, along with Sean, Jack, Brian and Doc Swaim boarded the Skuggor jet and took off for home.

***

Of course, everyone at home already knew what had happened and they were waiting for us. Brian and Jack were quickly helped upstairs; Jack to his own room and Brian to our medical facility on the second floor of the East Wing.

When Brian realized that he wasn't going to be allowed to sleep in his own bedroom, he howled in protest. "I just got that room and now I've gotta be someplace else?"

Doctor Mohamed and Doctor Joseph gently slid the angry little boy up onto the gurney. Mohamed leaned down over him and said softly, "Brian, are you intending to be as big a pain in the ass a patient as your father was?"

The brown-haired boy flashed a big smile. "I don't know about him Doctor, but until I get to go to my own room, I'm gonna be as big a pain in the ass as I can."

Mohamed and Joseph looked at each other and rolled their eyes as they wheeled Brian away.

***

Daniel being wise and professional as usual. He escorted us down to the library and made us all a drink including Sean. We gratefully took sips from our tumblers.

Daniel stood there looking uncomfortable.

"What's up Daniel? Go make yourself a drink."

"Sir… Eric, the latest information we've received is… well, it doesn't look like Richard is going to make it. The trauma his body sustained was extraordinary. They really tried to beat him to death."

"Make yourself a drink Daniel and sit with us."

He walked to the bar and poured himself a drink and sat down on one of the couches. He took a long sip and then his big body began to heave in sobs. He completely lost it and his crying was overpowering.

Sean wrapped his little arms around the big man and pulled him into a hug. "Daniel, it's gonna be all right. Richard is the toughest man I know. Nobody could beat him up that bad. You'll see Daniel, he'll be back with us."

Daniel wiped his eyes and stood up. "Aside from the time I picked you up into a hug, that was the most unprofessional thing I've ever done. I apologize to you Sir and I'll expect to be fired if something like this ever happens again."

"Sean, thank you for your kindness. You're the finest young man I've ever known." He turned quickly and left the room.

I looked at Doc and said that it was time to say goodnight. He nodded and rose from his chair. I walked him to the back door with my little boy in hand.

We rode the elevator up to bedroom land and he slipped out of his tee shirt and shorts like a little magician. I smiled as I pulled off his sneakers and socks and the finally pulled his boxer briefs down his long little boy legs and over and off his feet.

"It's really gonna be alright Dad you'll see."

I took off my clothes and climbed next to him. I pulled him into me so closely that for a moment I feared that I might hurt him.

I decided to adopt my Son's optimism. Richard WAS a tough man and that gang of creeps didn't seem capable of beating him down.

The little boy in my arms was suddenly making little humming/squeaking noises that told me that he was asleep. I kissed his dark haired little head and very soon followed him into slumber.

***

Brian was an angry little boy when we visited him in the infirmary the next morning. "Dad, these guys say that I can't have any breakfast and I can't even drink anything!"

I'd anticipated this because being a young boy, he had no real sense of his own mortality and with the joyful impertinence of youth, felt indestructible.

"Brian, you're a very bright boy. Let's think about this. You have a hole in your tummy that goes right through your torso. If the bullet that went through you had traveled a different course by micro millimeters, you'd be dead or dying right now."

"By what has to be divine mercy, you're alive and healing. But Brian, until that wound heals, you're going to receive your nourishment pretty much from an IV. Son you're young and strong. You'll heal quickly… I promise you."

A large tear rolled down his cheek. "So, I really did almost die?"

I hugged him around his neck and pulled him to me. "Y-yes my little Brian. That damned man did his best to kill you."

"Why Dad? What did I do?"

I took a deep breath. "What you did Spider, was demonstrate love and compassion, bravery and selflessness in front of a man who had no concept of those values. They are so foreign to him that he felt compelled to destroy them and in order to do that, he had to try to destroy you. We won, but you're one of the people paying the price."

"Think about this though; once you've healed, don't you think Mrs. Edwards is going to go out of her way to fatten you back up? I can't imagine what goodies she's going to prepare for you."

He smiled though his golden brown eyes were still moist. I left so that he could visit with Sean and Jack.

***

"The Magnolia is about a day out of Jacksonville Eric," Barry said as I sat sipping on a steaming mug of coffee. Phil has already negotiated the sale and the transfer of the bullion. He can fill you in on the details but it seems that the estimated value is something like three billion. A lot of money Chief ."

"Yeah but if we lose Richard was it worth it?"

His eyes were moist as he turned to me. "Please don't make me start crying Boss. Losing Walter was the worst thing that ever happened to me so far in my life. If we lose Richard, I don't even know how much more use I'd be to the Skuggor."

"We're so fucking good, how in the hell do tiny little shitasses do this?"

"Because they're tiny little shitasses and we don't see them coming Barry. We spend all of our time looking for the big threats."

Brutus entered the room. "Eric, they need you in the infirmary for Brian and also, there is information about Richard."

I rose quickly to my feet.

"Thank you Brutus though I don't suspect any of this will be pleasant."

The big man tried his best to look encouraging but I could see that his eyes were glistening with unfallen tears.

Chapter 30

Even those who do not believe in God often pray.
There is an essential need to believe that someone or something out in the vast universe cares and can help.
This is my morning prayer to whoever listens to it;
There is darkness in me, please shine light upon it.
There is weakness in me. Please make that stronger.
Parts of me are broken and some parts are bruised. Please mend what's broken and salve what is bruised.
Heal what is sick in me and re-kindle the peace and love that has died in me for so many foolish reasons.
Refresh my soul. Refresh my soul. Refresh my soul and make me whole.

"He's worse than you were."

Doctor Joseph smiled, "We're hoping you can help with this. His bullet wound needs to heal and then his life can get back to normal but without his co-operation that will take longer than it needs to."

Brian was sitting up in his bed actually scowling.

"So, Son, is there a particular reason why you're giving these two good Doctors such a hard time?"

He was cowed by my sudden appearance and bowed his head in chagrin. "D-Dad, they won't even let me go to the toilet. They're making me pee in a bottle and I even gotta poop in a bowl. That's just not right. I bet I can get up and sit on a toilet right now."

"Besides that, I'm so hungry and thirsty. All that I get to do is suck on ice chips. Man, I'd sure like a beer or a soda Dad."

"Well, here's the good news Brian, Doctor Joseph just told me that tomorrow morning you're going to be able to try to eat solid food for breakfast. It will probably be something soft and bland like oatmeal. Along with that, you'll get to drink some milk. If your body handles that well, then you can drink all the water you want; no more ice chips."

"Then, the day after you'll have lunch. It will probably be a thick broth or a soft soup. If that goes well, then a dinner… not much but perhaps more than you've had since you were shot. We're talking about a poached fish filet or a creamy but not very spicy pasta dish like a mild fettucine and cheese."

"A day or two after that, you'll be allowed back into your own room and life will eventually get back to normal but… Brian, you've been a real brat so you owe these two good doctors a sincere apology."

He raised his glance up to Joseph and Mohamed. "I'm very sorry for being so bad but it's just that I'm new here and I don't want to miss out on anything. Thank you for saving my life and I'm so sad that I've been such a pain. It's j-just that I …"

He was crying so hard that I grasped him to me and held him tight while he wept into my chest. "Dad, I was so afraid I was going to die and then with all these restrictions… I was afraid there was something wrong and I'd never be able to act normal again. I was just so afraid. I'm so sorry I've been so much trouble."

I rubbed my hands through his dark brown hair and held him tightly against me. "It's more than alright Brian. You've been through a lot more than most people ever have to endure. You only have to put up with stuff for about four more days and then, you're back in your room and normal life. You'll still have some healing to do but that will be quick we think."

"Now, will you try not to give the doctors any more trouble while they still need to keep you here in the infirmary?"

He smiled and held my hand. "I'm really sorry doctors; I'll do whatever you say. I promise."

I kissed him and headed to the command center terrified over what news they had about Richard.

It was Wolfman at the Com and he nodded his head as I entered. "Coffee's fresh Eric. Just made it about twenty minutes ago."

I nodded and poured myself a cup. I noticed a very different, but delightful, taste.

"What's different about this coffee Wolfman?"

He smiled. "My late wife taught me years ago that you add a half of a teaspoon of cinnamon to a pot of strong black coffee and you have a cup of what god intended you to drink."

"Well, I'll remember that from now on. This is remarkable."

I sat in my chair and looked at him.

"So, what is the news about Richard?"

He sat down alongside of me and shrugged his tight body before he looked at me and said, "Richard is out of his morphine coma and lucid. Most of his vital signs are excellent. This is a remarkable turn-around from the news we had yesterday. We were all afraid we were going to lose him but now it looks like he is destined for a full recovery."

"His kidneys were really punished and so was his liver. Yesterday it looked like he was undergoing renal failure but those are resilient organs and during the night, they sprang back. They're very fragile still so, he won't be allowed to drink alcohol for a while and he certainly isn't very pretty but we can bring him home in three days. His entire renal system has returned to normal specs."

"Richard is one tough son of a bitch Boss."

I patted his arm in enthusiasm. "Wolfman, I think I'm on the verge of tears. What wonderful news. As soon as it's allowed, will you arrange to have him brought home to us? He needs to be here because this is where he's loved. Will you keep me informed?"

"Of course, Eric."

"You've just made my day Big Man." I squeezed his shoulder and left the room.

***

This was the big day that I'd looked forward to and feared at the same time.

Sean was going to land his plane for the first time. He'd already taken off several times but this was certainly more significant. Without any shame or abashment, he hugged me tightly before running off to the Cessna. This would be a complete flight for my boy for the first time.

The blue over white craft taxied to the head of the small runway and my heart surged as I realized that it was my little boy doing all of that.

Before I could get a mindset on that, the plane was roaring down the tarmac and suddenly into the air.

I watched in awe as it circled the airport and then descended. My heart was hardly beating as I watched the little plane touch the runway impeccably… without even a bounce. My little boy had essentially done a complete flight.

There wasn't much time to consider congratulations because at once, the little Cessna was wheeling up to the runway and, moments later, was airborne again.

After circling the little airfield, it came down to a once-again perfect landing. The process was completed three more times with the same wonderful results.

They climbed out of Dove laughing and jostling. "This kid is so cool Eric. Next week, we'll be doing 'touch and go' on the runway. He could get his license right now if he was old enough and had more hours. He's a natural."

Sean grinned and said, "Yeah Will, but you're a natural teacher. I'm so happy Dad found you."

"Next week then, Sean. That was wonderful."

He wrapped his little arms around me as we walked to the car.

"DAD… I took off and landed my own plane! Do you realize how crazy that is? I love you so much that I can't even think of the words that express it. The life I'm liven'… the things I've got… there is more in my life than I ever thought would ever happen… an it's all you Dad! It's all you."

"No Sean, I've provided things but you DO them. I'm so damned proud of you."

"Dad… you know how you had 'Red Kitty' painted on my cart? Do you think we could have Dove painted on my plane?"

I ruffled his hair as we were walking to the car. "Consider it done my Son. Do you want to choose the font and the color?"

"Nope. Whatever you select will be perfect, I know that."

"OK then I hope you'll be pleased next week before your 'touch and goes' little man."

There is a little Italian Restaurant about a mile from the tiny airport we used. I pulled the 'red cat' into the parking lot and my still-excited boy and I entered.

It took very little time for us to decide on pizza. There was a small deliberation over the toppings but we finally agreed upon ground sausage and mushrooms. We ordered a large because, I was with a thirteen-year-old boy who had just landed his own plane multiple times. I pretty much assumed that he would be hungry.

We were seated in a small booth way over in the corner so I said softly to him, "I'll order two beers and you order a soft drink. One of my beers will be for you but be very careful as you drink it OK?"

He grinned. "I can be sneaky Dad. Thanks."

Our drinks came first and we each raised a beer cup to each other and grinned lovingly. Our pizza arrived shortly after and we smiled over it. The smells were perfect and the cheese was white and bubbling just as it ought to be.

We each plucked a red hot slice onto our plates, took another sip from our cups and folded the hot slices in half and took a cautious bite. There is nothing more happiness-destroying than a hot pizza burn to the roof of your mouth.

The taste was exquisite. I had of course, eaten great pizza particularly in Manhattan and the Bronx. This was not on that level but it was way above the level of crap like Domino's and Pizza Hut that should be required to call what they served something far different from 'pizza'.

I don't know what that stuff was that they sold to the public but it didn't even remotely resemble pizza.

The pie cooled down enough that we both smiled and literally inhaled the cheesy magnificence before us.

Typically, Sean out-consumed me but I did pretty well. In unimaginably quick time, we'd eaten it all and Sean smiled and swallowed the last of his beer. He let out a magnificent burp and grinned as he placed his empty cup upon the table.

"Scuze me," he said it as if he was apologizing but he wasn't really apologizing. Two things Little boys love are farting and burping and they find them so amusing and satisfying. He had the decency to only giggle a little.

I looked down at the table and wondered what our waiter was going to think of two empty beer glasses and a root beer that had literally not been touched. I guessed he'd figure it out but he'd be receiving a tip big enough that his curiosity would soon be stultified.

***

We were walking around the hedge to the pool and as we did so, Gary and Bobby were just walking onto the deck. We smiled at each other and very quickly Sean and Bobby were naked and in the water.

"Well Eric, life around you certainly isn't boring is it?"

I smiled as I made us both a drink at the patio bar. "Gary, it wasn't so long ago that it was. It used to be drinking myself into oblivion and nothing more. Now it's sharing every minute in the adventure that is a boy's life… make that three boy's lives.

I know that sunken treasure hunts, pirates and terrorists aren't a normal part of that prescription but you know as well as I do that being very well off changes the formula."

I looked around for a second and then mused, "I wonder where Jack is?"

"He's in a private meeting with Professor Swaim. That's why Bobby has the time off."

I nodded my head and replied with a bit of sadness, "I see. Jack has reached that point in his young life that he doesn't inform me of all of his actions or intentions. I wish I'd found him sooner and been capable of being his father. I would so have enjoyed him as a little boy because I sure enjoy him as he is now, Gary. I have no doubt that you feel the same about Bobby."

He just smiled and patted my arm.

***

I was sitting at my desk in the study going over some reports when there was a soft tapping at my door. The door itself was actually open so I looked up and there stood Jack and Doc Swaim.

"Dad, I know that you're busy but do you have a little time to talk?"

"Why, Jack, I've always got time to talk with you; you know that. Let's all go sit in the comfortable seats in the corner. Are drinks acceptable or is this a dire conversation we're going to have?"

Doc Swaim quickly interjected that drinks were perfectly acceptable.

We each took a small sip from our preferred beverage before I asked, "So, my young son, what do you need to talk to me about?"

His emerald green eyes almost burned into me as he replied, "Dad, I've talked to Doctor Swaim about this; that's why he's here with me. After what happened, I want to begin my Skuggor training now. I know that I'm two years too young to go to an actual training camp, but while Richard is still so injured, I was thinking Wolfman could start with me and when Richard gets better, he could take over. I want to someday be 'Galahad' but I want to earn that position not just because I'm a Tucker but because I'm a skilled and trained Skuggor."

Doc Swaim smiled and cut in, "We talked about the University but after tossing around our thoughts, we've concluded that for Jack to reach his desired ambition, working with Skuggor was a much more intelligent option therefore, I'm here to back-up his proposal."

"If Jack's destiny is to be head of the Skuggor, then his education should be centered around the Skuggor. At present, I'd suggest at least three hours a day."

I finished my drink and took Doc's glass and moved to the bar. I made two drinks and popped open a beer and sat back down.

"Well, the reality is that with Richard so badly hurt, I can't spare Wolfman for three hours a day. However, the idea is appealing so I'll talk to the guys and see if they will take turns working with you Jack."

"You'll learn a lot about tactics and strategy from Wolfman and Brutus but time spent with Barry will also be essential if you're going to eventually become 'Galahad'."

"You'll need to begin martial arts training and learn to use our peculiar weapons, but that doesn't have to happen at once. You're two years away from being able to enter an actual Skuggor training program but we certainly can get you a head start, Son, if that's what you want but… what about the University and the oceanography? What about that Jack?"

"Dad, that can always be a hobby and an interest. This family comes first and I'm so unhappy that both times we were assaulted, I was a useless little boy. I want to be a dangerous man that nobody would ever think of coming up against."

I nodded and then said, "This wasn't the course I'd have chosen for you Jack, but you have to follow your own star. I'm proud that you've chosen the family but I'm sad you've forsaken the sea."

He grinned from ear to ear, "Well Dad, I haven't had a hell of a lot luck out on the sea have I?"

I gave that a thought and then chuckled in agreement.

***

This was the last game of the regional play-offs. Poor Brian was devastated that he couldn't play but we'd brought him to the game to watch his team compete because he was, after all, a great team player.

Despite our absence, Coach Chino had welcomed Sean back into the line-up. I was worried that Sean would be rusty after the treasure hunt but, the first play he snagged at first base convinced me that he was alright.

It was now the fifth inning and we were tied two to two. Our pitcher was having a bit of trouble though he'd done a pretty good job so far. There were two outs but also a man on base. The batter had two balls and one strike on his count.

Rico gave the signal to the pitcher. He nodded and delivered. The batter drove a line drive straight to Charlie who snagged it, tagged second base and then tossed the ball to Sean a first.

The inning was over and we were up.

Rico tagged popped the first pitch into shallow center-field and was at first base easily.

Little Charlie did his usual patient job and was almost walked on balls before the pitcher made a mistake and he clobbered it into left field. Suddenly, we had runners at second and third.

Aaron was up next and made a fantastic connection with the ball on the first pitch. Unfortunately the other team's left fielder caught it instantly and the runners didn't advance.

Sean was up and John and Arlen were bouncing in their seats. Brian and I were (of course) under perfect control because there was obviously nothing exciting going on… just kidding… we were all going crazy.

My little man took his traditional swipes with his bat before stepping into the box. He looked up at us in the bleachers and gave us all a 'Sean smile' before stepping in.

The first pitch was high and outside. The second pitch was the same.

"They're going to walk him," John said.

"Maybe not. Maybe they're trying to fool him," Arlen muttered.

He was right. The third pitch was down the middle and Sean swung too late for a strike.

The fourth pitch was low but inside and Sean just ignored it but the Umpire called it a strike.

Two and two The pitcher and the catcher exchanged signals and head nods.

"This is the one!" Arlen exclaimed as the pitcher released the ball.

Sean's contact was almost deafening as the ball screamed over the fence and the three boys almost danced to home plate. After doing their little boy thing on the field and then lining up to shake the other team's hand's, the team ran up the bleachers and mobbed Brian.

"Spider, we never could have done this without you this season. You're the best!"

Brian smiled and accepted the accolades as he shook each of his teammate's hands.

"We'll have another winning season next year guys," he said with a smile.

***

We brought Richard home on Wednesday. He was still very battered but he smiled as we carried him down to the infirmary. I wondered if it was his turn to be a pain in the ass.

I took his hand as he settled into his hospital bed. "Welcome home my friend. We're so happy that we have you back. Jack would like to see you if that's alright."

He actually cried. "Jack was sleeping next to me and all we were doing was sleeping, by the way. These guys busted into our cabin and I woke up at once because that's how I am… anyhow I took down a couple of them before there were too many. I was naked and surprised and they got me. Did they get Jack?"

"Richard, Jack is alright and the Skuggor took care of the situation. All is well with the world. Now, we need is for you to heal. Are you feeling up to a visit from Jack?"

He smiled and said, "Send that boy up. I couldn't imagine anything I'd rather do except being back to work."

***

Brian was, of course, back in his room and well on the way to full recovery although most of his time was spent in bed. "So little boy, do you think some time in the pool would feel good?"

He smiled and said, "If you'll be there with me Dad."

"Of course I'll be there with you Brian, I'm after all YOU'RE goalkeeper.

***

I was lying in bed thinking that things were working out very well when he came into my room.

He quickly shucked his underpants, slipped under the covers, and pulled tightly against me. "I never thought that I'd have a real family Dad, but I sure never thought it would be one this neat and I never' never thought I'd have a Dad like you."

From the squeaking sounds he was making, I knew that he was crying. I reached over and pulled him to my chest. "Sean, I never knew I'd have you in my life. You taught me how to live, you taught me how to love and now suddenly' there are the four of us and it's all because of you. If you want to know the truth, it's all because of a video Uncle Phil took of a soccer game almost two years ago."

I could see his smile widening. "You chose me Dad but remember that I chose you too."

We hugged tightly and as sleep overtook me, I remembered that Jack was safe and asleep in his own bed and so was Brian.

We were a family and we were ready to face the world together. We would do that with love and confidence.

The End

Thank you all who have responded to these chapters. Response and feedback are what allows a writer to go on… well at least this writer.
My life is coming to a close but I can proudly say that I've expressed gratitude almost every inch of the way.
It is my hope that I'll be able to write a fourth book but if I can't, you've read this story and know these characters enough that you can invent your own future for them. In some other universe they are alive and well.
Thanks and I hope to be back.
