                           Latin Lust

                           Chapter Two

Paul Medlin sat in one of the large wing-back chairs in the

office reception area, reading the Times-Dispatch. It took a bit

of extra effort to get to work early enough that he could observe

this little ritual of his, but it was worth it. The other partners

saw it as a sign that he was a go-getter, something they all

respected. He saw it as an opportunity to watch Anna Maria walk

the fifteen or so steps from the front door to the hallway which

led to her office. In his mind that was worth getting up early for

any day.

What had immediately endeared Anna Maria to Paul was not her

physical beauty, although she certainly had not been short-changed

where that was concerned. Rather, it was the obvious and powerful

fact that she had never felt compelled to sacrifice either her

femininity to her professionalism, or her professionalism to her

femininity. Even those always-present office boors, like Jim

Carmichael, who hit on every woman who came through the doors,

could sense the strength of her integrity and intelligence, just as

strongly as her, at times, almost over-powering sensuousness.

The women in the office recognized it too, from her first day

there, but amazingly enough they all liked her and if they were

threatened either by her beauty or her potential for success, they

never showed it. There was a youthful innocence and charm about

her which seemed to make her seem non-threatening, but which did

nothing to lessen the validity of her position in the firm.

"Buenos dias, Senorita Anna Maria," Paul said, rising and

bowing deeply as she entered the room. His Spanish was pathetic,

but she loved his attempts at it, nonetheless.

"Good morning, Mr. Medlin," she replied, smiling that

beautiful smile, and stopping to curtsy with a graceful flourish,

holding her skirt out to the side. She walked close to him,

knowing he would enjoy the scent of her new perfume, and gave her

head an almost indescernible toss which made her brown hair sway

seductively as she turned to walk down the hall.

Paul stood with the paper still in his hands, watching her

every movement until she disappeared into her office. Sandra, the

receptionist, was accustomed to this morning ritual, but she

couldn't resist watching it, nor could she resist smiling at Paul

when he turned his head back to her and shook it slowly from side

to side.

"If she stays here fifty years, you'll still be doing that

every morning, won't you?", Sandra asked, teasingly.

"Yes," he said, folding the paper back up. "Even if they have

to roll me in, I'll still be doing that. Not a doubt in the

world."

"You could always ask her out, you know." It wasn't the first

time she had suggested it.

"Right. I have a tie that is older than she is. Not that I

wouldn't love it, you understand."

"I still say she might surprise you. Wouldn't kill you to ask

her."

"No, it would only kill me if she said no. Maybe someday.

We'll see."

Closing the door to his office, Paul reveled for just a few

more minutes in self-pity, and then purposely set about shaking his

thoughts clear of the adorable young woman who had such a stong

appeal to him. There was work to do.

In her own office, Anna Maria looked at her calendar, trying

to focus on what lay ahead of her for the day. Appointments til

eleven, a firm meeting with the partners and associates from eleven

until lunch, then two more appointments in the afternoon. Maybe

she would get away a little early today, if all went well. The

phone on her desk buzzed. It was Sandra.

"This is none of my business, but he's crazy about you, you

know."

     "Who?"

"Who? Who do you think? Paul Medlin."

"Oh, he isn't, silly. He's just a nice man who genuinely

likes women."

"No, it's more than that. Trust me. He's just afraid you

think he's too old for you. Do you?"

"Too old? He's 47 isn't he? Is that too old for me?"

Sandra laughed quietly. "I guess you have to answer that one

for yourself. Personally, I don't think a man like Paul can ever

be too old."

"I like older men. He should know that."

"Well, he may never know it if you don't tell him. Unless you

want me to tell him?"

"No! I mean, no...it's okay, I'll try to let him know that I

don't think he's too old...somehow..but I still think you're wrong

about his interest in me. He probably thinks I'm too young."

Sandra sighed. "I give up. Just thought you'd like the

opinion of an old pro at these things."

"Yes, thanks very much, old pro," Anna Maria said cheerfully.

"I'll keep you posted, okay?"

As she put the reciever back in its place, Anna Maria smiled

to herself and thought about Paul. Maybe it was time to boost his

courage a bit. Perhaps Sandra was right, afterall.

There wasn't time to think much more about Paul until the firm

meeting, and Anna Maria found it hard to concentrate on business

with him seated across the table from her. If he had a similar

problem he certainly didn't show it. There had been times, though,

when Anna Maria had sensed the truth of Sandra's suspicions, even

though she wouldn't admit it to her. There was sometimes a power

in his gaze that in itself was enough to almost melt her when he

looked at her. She knew he worked hard to stay in control of his

emotions, and she wondered what he would be like in bed. He was

certainly handsome, nearly six feet tall, just a touch of gray

showing in his dark blonde hair. There was somehow a mixture of

cruel toughness underlying his friendly and always gentlemanly

manners, something which Anna Maria found particularly appealing.

He seemed strong and intelligent, but yet gentle and caring. Older

men were often like that, but none she had met so far mixed those

attributes as attractively as Paul did.

Toward the end of the meeting, Anna Maria thought about asking

Paul if he would like to have lunch with her, but then remembered

that she had promised to meet Betty at Julian's. She had been

looking forward to that too, so she resigned herself to waiting for

another time.

Betty had been a good friend to Anna Maria ever since they

roomed together at Westhampton. It had been easy for them to stay

in touch, but they had both been busy since graduation, and they

only saw each other irregularly now, often less than once a month.

Anna Maria wanted to see her more often and to rekindle some of the

closeness they had felt while rooming together, but she wasn't sure

how to go about it.

Betty was waiting for her at a table toward the back of the

busy restaurant. At 5'9", Betty was taller than Anna Maria, and

her blonde hair and fair skin was quite a contrast to Anna Maria's

hispanic features. Anna Maria had always envied her long legs and

larger breasts, although she was very proud of her own body, and

preferred being 5'6". She loved the way she looked in high heels,

and Betty found it hard to wear heels as high as the ones Anna

Maria preferred. She remembered fondly how Betty used to try hers

on, and the wonderful effect they had on her legs as she modeled

them. Thinking about that made her flush, and she tried to change

her thoughts to more normal things as she sat across from her

friend.

"We really should spend more time together, Anna," Betty said

later during their meal. "I know you're busy, but we should just

make some time for us."

Anna Maria laughed softly. "Are you a mind reader? I was

just thinking the same thing myself. I miss our college days. Why

don't we go shopping sometime soon? I love to shop, now that I can

finally afford to buy something."

"That's a great idea! I'd love that. How about Saturday?

Will you be free?"

"Yes! And I know just what we'll do. We'll start early, maybe

have breakfast at The Jefferson. Then we'll shop hard until

lunchtime, have a nice long lunch together at Brennigan's, shop

hard again until around 5:00, and then we'll go to my house, cook

some steaks on the grill, and try on what we bought. How does that

sound?"

"I love it! And, one more thing. We both get to pick one

outfit out that the other one HAS to buy. There is something I've

been dying for you to have, and now's the chance for me to make

sure you get it."

"Agreed! Just don't forget that you're the one who came up

with that idea."

Betty chuckled and smiled warmly at Anna Maria. It wasn't the

only idea she had come up with. She just hoped that Anna Maria was

ready for the others.
