My mom and I had made a very good life for ourselves after dad left.
My mom had taken his leaving pretty badly and it showed by her 3 pack
aday smoking habit.I was so glad she had met a new friend.She had
been spending quite alot of time next door with our new neighbor,Mrs.
Gates.Mrs.Gates must have been in her late 50`s,looked good for her
age,and was a widower.My mom said Mr.Gates had died a few years ago
and left her pretty well off.Well off enough to buy this new home and
go back to school.Can you imagine a woman her age back in school?
Anyway,my mom asked me over to meet our new neighbor and I agreed.It
was good to get out of the house since being grounded because my high
school grades had been going down hill.We went over there around 8pm
and knocked.She was glad to see us.
'Hello,Joel,your mom has been telling me a lot about you.Come in
and make yourselves comfortable.' Mrs.Gates had really fixed the
house up alot. I remember what it looked like when my friend Pete
lived here.
'Joel,your mom has been telling me you have been having trouble
with your studies.I know just how hard school can be,since going back
myself.Your mom did mention,didn`t she, that I was going to school?'
'Yes she did,Mrs.Gates'
'I think learning is so important.You must never stop learning,
even at my age.I mentioned my going back to school because I may be
able to help you with your school work or better put,get you to do
better.'
'How`s that,Mrs.Gates?'
'You see Joel,I have helped many people in my life overcome
personal blocks that prevented them from acheiving personal goals.I
seem to have a knack for it.Take your mom for instance.You know your
mom smokes about three packs a day,right?'
'Yea,right.So what?'
'Have you seen your mom smoking recently.? I thought about her
question and realized I hadn`t seen my mom smoking in the past few
days.I quess I hadn`t paid much attention to it ,seeing her smoking
just about all my life.
'Now that you mention it,I haven`t.It just occurred to me now.' My
mom just sat there smiling.
'Do you know why that is?'
'No,I don`t.why?'
'Because I helped her,Joel.I helped her release her desire to
smoke.I redirected her desire into more beneficial things.I`d like to

'Well..I don`t know what you could do for me.I`m just having a
little problem concentrating on some of those boring subjects I have.

focus.A lot of people have trouble focussing.I can help you overcome

'Good! I tell you what,after school tomorrow come over here and

'Sure,Mrs. gates.I`ll be here after school.' As my mom and I were
heading toward the door Mrs.gates was whispering in my mom`s ear.My
mom just seemed to be listening and Mrs Gates was smiling from ear to
ear for some reason.
The next day after school I finished up my homework,as best I could,
and headed next door to keep my appt.with Mrs.Gates.I still didn`t
know what she could do to help me but I was willing to try whatever.I
quess Mrs.Gates was looking for me because she was standing in her
doorway,smiling.She was looking pretty good.
'Hi Joel,come right on in.I`ve been expecting you.' I entered her
house and saw on her coffee table that she had prepared two cups of
tea.There also was a black velvet box on the table.I really didn`t
pay much attention to it as I sat down on the sofa and was soon
joined by Mrs.Gates.She fixed a cup of tea and handed it to me.
'Your mom told me you liked tea,so I prepared some for us.I hope
you don`t mind.'
'No problem,Mrs.Gates.Thanks!' We sat there for a few minutes,
relaxing and sipping our tea,and I must admit the tea was very good.
Herbal,I think.
'How`s the tea?'
'Very good,Mrs.Gates!You have good taste.Thank you!'
'It`s my pleasure,Joel.Now that we have relaxed with our tea I
want to show you something.' She reached for the black velvet box.
She gave it to me and told me to open it. Inside was a ruby the size
of a quarter on a thick gold chain.I had never seen a ruby this big
before.It was beautiful.
'Take it out Joel and hand it to me, please.' I took it out and
handed it to her.She smiled and held it up to the light.
'This ruby was given to me by my late husband.He was a scholar and
was into learning how the mind works.He wanted to know how to remove
blocks that prevent a person from acheiving his or her goals.It`s
very lovely isn`t it?'
'It sure is.I`ve never seen a ruby that big before.It must be
worth alot of money,huh?'
'I`v never even considered it`s market value,Joel.I`m more into
it`s beauty.I love rubies.I love their color. That deep,deep red
color and the way it reflects light from the outside and from the
inside. A lot of people never notice the light coming from the center
of a ruby.It`s amazing.Can you see what I`m talking about,Joel? The
light that seems to come from the center?.Can you see it?' I was
looking at it more closely now and thought I saw what she was talking
about and answered,'yes.'
'I could gaze into this ruby all day and never tire of it`s beauty
and fire.If you look deep into the stone you might be able to see
that fire...that light.Can you see the center,Joel? Here,let me move
it closer for you.Can you see the center now?' The ruby was close now,
thanks to Mrs.Gates, and I stared into the stone trying hard to find
the center.
'I`m trying Mrs.Gates but I don`t know.....'
'Just relax Joel,you`re trying too hard.All you have to do is
relax and look deep into the ruby.Concentrate on looking deep into
the ruby.It`s there.The fire...the light...in the center...keep
searching for the center.Don`t stop...don`t stop until you locate the
center of the ruby and then you`ll see the light..the fire that I`m
talking about.She kept moving the ruby so that I could get a better
look and I think I saw it now.There in the center of the ruby, a
light.
'I think I see a light now, in the center.Is that what you`re
talking about?'
'Yes Joel,you`re doing very well.You are concentrating and
noticing the light in the ruby and nothing else.Nothing but the light.
Just concentrating SSsoo well and focussing on the light in the
center and blocking every thing else out.Nothing will break your
concentration...nothing ...nothing.. just the light in the center and
my voice.That`s right Joel,you`re doing very well just focussing on
the light and my voice and nothing else.SSssoo good to reach the
center and the light there...the center and the light...just relax...
relax, and as you relax more and more you can follow the light
further into the center now...further and further now...just follow
the light Joel,further and furhter...deeper and deeper now...deeeeper
and deeeeper ...deeeeeper and furrrther......' I was staring into the
ruby and I felt a force pulling me inside and Mrs.Gates voice seemed
far away, in the distance.I didn`t seem to care.I just wanted to
follow the light now, to the center.The center and nothing else.It
felt so nice to j
st follow the light and relax.This ruby was beautiful,
just like Mrs.Gates said

bored you too much?' I felt myself "snap" back to the here and now as
if I had dozed off.I was confused about what had just happened.

'I`m glad.I think that`s enough for today.We`ll take up your "self-

talking about.Had we done anything else besides talk about the ruby?
I couldn`t remember for some reason.
'..I..I`m sorry,Mrs.Gates but did I doze off or something? I can`t

'Don`t worry Joel,you will remember in time.My lessons are never
forgotten.You will remember.You will.' She smiled and led me to the
door and said goodnight.I went home,confused.It wasn`t until I got
home, and my mom was waiting up for me and asked how things went with
Mrs.Gates, that the depth of my confusion became more apparent.I
didn`t know what to tell her.Then I asked why she was waiting up for
me.She hadn`t done that in years.She mentioned the time.I looked at
the clock and it said 8pm. I had been at Mrs.Gates`s house for almost

It`s amazing what a good nights sleep will do. When I got to school I
even found those boring subjects interesting.I just seemed to
understand them better now. I breezed through each class with energy
to burn. I felt different somehow.Why did I feel this way? I figured
it was because of my visit to Mrs.Gates, even though I still couldn`t
piece together what exactly happened. I thought about this for days
afterwards.Then I got the phone call.It was Mrs.Gates.

passed it off and finished what I was doing and headed out the door

about my mom.I hadn`t seen her all day and I had to leave her a note
in case she got home and wondered where I was.I went back inside and
left a note on the frig. and then started back over next door.Mrs.

games.' I sat there for a moment wondering what she meant by "games"
but I didn`t think about it for long.This woman was crazy or
something and I had to get my mom out of there.I made a dash for the
front door.
'Stop.You can not move.You can not.Turn around,Joel.Turn around,now.
' I froze in place.I couldn`t move.I tried but it felt like my body
was made of lead.I was rooted to the spot.I began to turn around.I
didn`t want to.I wanted to get out of there but I was turning away
from the door and faced Mrs.Gates.She walked slowly up to me,smiling,
and placed her fingers on my temples and began to move them slowly.
'You don`t won`t to leave so soon, Joel.You want to stay here with
me and your mom and play.I think all you need is to sleep for awhile
and then you`ll feel alot better about staying.Here,let me help you
relax.Just look at me Joel.That`s right,look into my eyes and
remember how you felt when you looked into the ruby.You remember the

I vaguely remember hearing someone saying,"wakeup." I woke up on the
sofa,next to my mom.She was still asleep and Mrs.Gates was sitting
across form us,watching.

hing I sugggeted.I found that I could get anyone to do anything if I
gave the right suggestions and commands.Then I started having some of
the subjects come over to my home,after giving them post-hypnotic
commands to obey certain words or phrases,and I would have all sorts
of fun with them.Men or women. No one could resist being hypnotized
