Author's Note: And here is the fourth installment of the
story. I would like to thank all of you who wrote and
told me to continue. I wouldn't be writing this
otherwise. :-)

On another note, I wanted to tell you up front that there
will not be any sex in this chapter. You can skip it if
you want, but you'll miss some important parts. >:)

I'm also introducing a new character. Send all comments

*** Chapter Four

Shopping. The one word that sends shivers of fear down
most men's spine. That was what Gabriel was having to
endure right now. Though, it would have been going much
better if 'The Girls' knew what they wanted to buy.
Gabriel wondered why they couldn't go in and get out with
what they wanted. Like he does. But no. 'The Girls' would
stay in one section and look at stuff (for far too long
in Gabriel's opinion) and not even buy anything. They'd
just move onto the next section.

And they had turned him into the ever-infamous "Bag-boy".
You know the type. The boy that stands outside of the
dressing room, holding bags full of whatever 'The Girls'
have bought. And the one that guarded their purses with
his life, by holding them while sitting on the bench.

Yes, Gabriel thought he was in hell. All of this happened
when Dawna found out that Holly did not have every brand
of clothing known to man. Dawna apparently thought that
that was a mortal sin, and set out to rectify the
situation. And then it escalated when Dawna and Rachel
both thought that it was time for them to update their
wardrobe.

Gabriel had thoroughly told them "NO" when they asked if
he needed any more clothes. Even Rachel's pouty look (the
weapon she used against him to make him fold on a
subject) didn't even work when she asked him to get a few
more sets of clothes.

He pretty much hated shopping with vigor. Rachel found
this out when she came out of the changing room for what
seemed like the hundredth time and asked how she looked
in the new jeans. "They make your ass look big," He lied,
just to piss her off. But it only irritated her. She knew
that he hated being at the mall.

This was the eighth day that he was a resident of the
Wilson household. And he pretty much had no complaints,
even though they were still holding back some secrets
from him. But he promised not to push, and Gabriel always
tried to keep his word, if at all possible. But he really
did hate going to malls. The only thing that seemed to
pacify him at all was that Rachel told him that after the
shopping excursion was over that he would move onto the
next level of his training. That would be Thought
Manipulation from a distance.

And this time they would do it on a complete stranger. A
stranger of Gabriel's choice.

The reason they were going to do it on a stranger was
because Holly firmly drew the line when it came to
messing with her thoughts. His fascination with his
powers never diminished, more to the point, they grew
since that first "training" session with Holly. For the
last few days, even Gabriel had to admit that he and
Rachel had run Holly through every emotion that was
possible.

They only touched rage once, though. That was not very
fun. Gabriel found out that a fully pissed-off Protector
could be a very dangerous thing. She destroyed half the
den and threw Gabriel about nine feet before Rachel
intervened and calmed her down.

But the thing that had amazed Gabriel the most didn't
have anything to do with mental powers. It was the way
Rachel had acted after their first "training session"
with Holly. After it was all over, she had basically told
him that she didn't care who he slept with, as long as
she held his heart. Which made Gabriel do a double take,
but he didn't complain. In fact, he loved having sex with
Holly. But if he was truthful, he loved Rachel more. And
that had nothing to do with sex.

Gabriel looked over to his left as a man sat down beside
him. He was a short plump little man with a light brown
purse in his lap. The man's face was drawn and he looked
tired when he looked Gabriel's way. "How long you in
for?"

"'Bout five more bags." Gabriel replied promptly.

The man winced in sympathy. "My wife has two bags left."

<'Oh quit being a baby, Gabriel. We're not that bad.'>
Rachel's voice rippled through his head.

<'You just remember that when I want to go to Auto Zone,
Darlin'.'> Gabriel replied smugly. There was no reply to
that but worried silence.

The reason he was taking going to take a trip to Auto
Zone was because he wanted to tweak his new car. My car.
He thought with a rueful shake of the head. Nine days ago
he would never dream of owning the brand spanking new
Dodge Durango that was currently setting outside in the
parking lot. He insisted on driving himself, while 'The
Girls' took their own vehicle.

Getting Dawna to make him accept the Durango was sort of
like pulling teeth from a hen, though. He had refused for
three days straight, but on the fourth he finally caved
and Dawna drove him and Rachel to buy a new Dodge.
Rachel's was red, his was black. He had to smile as he
remembered that one said "His" on the plates and the
other said "Hers". It was Rachel's idea.

Rachel had told him to make sure to stay close to them
when they left, in case a cop pulled them over. That way
she could "conveniently" make the police officer "forget"
that he was fifteen and exactly what he had pulled him
over for.

Gabriel thought that the plan had merit, so he tail-
gaited the women of his life all the way to the mall. But
neither of them got pulled over and arrived at the mall
quite safely.

And that was four hours ago. He thought bitterly. And to
top it off, he was pretty sure they were going to be
there for another two hours. Fuck that. I'm going for a
walk. He thought as he stood up, walked up to the door of
Rachel's changing room and knocked quite loudly.

The love of his life stuck her sandy-blonde head out of
the room. "Can't you wait till we get home to see me
naked?" She asked with a rakish grin.

Gabriel couldn't help but smile back. But then he
promptly shoved Rachel's purse into her hands. "I'm going
for a walk. Call me when you're done." He stated, leaving
no room for debate.

Not that Rachel would have argued. She knew that Gabriel
was getting a bit stir crazy. "Ok, just don't leave the
mall, not that I'm telling you what to do, but if you
leave the mall it will be harder for me to "call" you."
She replied.

Gabriel gave a shrug of the shoulder and a small grin.
"Whatever." Then he promptly turned on his heel and
started off on his walk.

The mall was fairly large so he knew he could walk quite
a bit if he wanted. The reason that he wanted to walk
(beside escaping 'The Girls' and their shopping illness)
was so he could think. He always thought better when he
was walking. And Gabriel wanted to think of the powers
that Rachel said he had. He had no more doubts about it,
if Rachel said he had them, he had them.

What had she listed off I could do? He tried to remember.
Ah. She said I could read the thoughts of mortals easily
and manipulate them. From a distance no less, without
touching. Although, she also said that I could manipulate
emotions without touching as well, just takes more
concentration. Then there's the telekinesis. Gabriel
paused his thought process for a moment. Telekinesis was
what he was the most afraid of, since he almost killed
Rachel with it once.

Then there's what I did in the street tournament. He
thought.

Gabriel continually walked around the mall and quickly
became bored. Then he decided to sit down and practice
reading people's thoughts. He had been practicing this on
Rachel and Holly (with their permission, of course) for
the last few days. That and building mental shields. He
had trouble reading thoughts with his mental shield up.
Rachel told him not to worry about it, though. He would
get the hang of it sooner or later.

Gabriel was sitting next to a big cement water fountain
that shot water about five feet in the air. He looked
across the walkway and noticed a Gap store, and promptly
shivered from the idea of more shopping. But he noticed
something else. A girl.

The girl had long, dark red hair that fell to the middle
of her shoulders, that was also french-braided. And the
braid was placed through the back of a blue Dallas
Cowboys ball cap. She was also wearing a plain white t-
shirt and a pair of Wranglers that looked painted on. She
had the smooth grace of someone who liked sports and she
looked to be no older than fourteen.

Gabriel decided to practice on her. He narrowed his eyes
as he concentrated. He found out something real quick
that Rachel forgot to mention. She and Holly had shielded
*some* of their thoughts... And apparently Normal's
didn't have this option.

Gabriel was bombarded with images of the girls past and
her thoughts of the future, not to mention that the
images were very vivid. Gabriel literally saw the girl's
life flash before his eyes. He didn't know that he
virtually downloaded the girl's mind, instead of just
reading her thoughts. It was completely by accident.
There were so many images and thoughts hitting him at
once that he felt more than a little dizzy. The next
thing he knew, he was in total darkness.

But before the darkness overtook him, he saw Rachel
coming his way. Concern was etched deep in her facial
features . . . Then there was nothing but blackness.
His last thought before he blacked out was: 'Guess I
should have waited for her to teach me before I jumped in
head first like a fuckin' idiot. Then there was nothing.

*

The dull ache in his head was receding quickly as Gabriel
slowly opened his eyes. It took a while for him to get
them into focus as well. For a minute or two there were
about three Rachel's standing side by side. Guess I
should talk to the one in the middle. He thought dimly.
He could only catch bits and pieces of what Holly and
Rachel were talking about, but he knew that it was Holly.
He knew by the voice.

"...I can't believe he did this! I expressly told him not
to try to use his power unless supervised!"

Ohhh, I have an irrate girlfriend on my hands. Gabriel
thought ruefully.

"...If you have to lay blame, Rach, you should lay it on
me. After all, he did it on *my* watch..."

Holly sounded very dejected to Gabriel's ears. Why would
she sound dejected? Then it all started to rush back to
him, reliving the girl's life (Connie was her name) in a
matter of seconds and that pushed his mind into an
automatic shut down.

"No, Holly, it's my fault. I'm his trainer, I take full
responsibility for it."
Gabriel shifted his head to Rachel and seen that she
looked *very* distraught and worried. Holly really didn't
look much better. I'd better say something before they go
completely into full mother hen mode. He thought
ruefully. "Didja girls catch the number of the truck that
hit me- twice." He said with a horse chuckle.

"Well, I'm glad to see you think this is amusing, Gabriel
Brice," Rachel replied in a biting tone, she couldn't
help it. Whenever she felt helpless, she always seemed to
fall back on anger. But, for Gabriel, her eyes and voice
softened somewhat. "You overextended your mental
abilities. From what I read from your mind, you took in
Connie's entire mind. And now it's stuck there until you
learn to get rid of it. And so far, there hasn't been a
Chosen yet that has been able to do that."

She didn't bother to tell him how impressed she was. It
took most Chosens years to learn to do what he did on his
first try. She wasn't lying when she said that he took in
the entire girl's mind. It was buried somewhere in his
complex mind. If he wanted to think about it, he could
recall everything about the girl like: Memories, emotions
and hopes. Hopefully he wouldn't pick up her personality
quirks, there was a 50/50 chance of that happening, but
they would fade in time.
But nothing else would fade.

Gabriel looked around to see just where the hell he was,
and wasn't really surprised to find that he was in his
bedroom. He looked calmly (even though he was quite sure
that someone had placed a Jack hammer in his head and was
using it at a menacing rate) around his room as he rubbed
his temples. It had changed in the last eight days.

For one, there was another bed in it, a queen-sized
waterbed. That was for Holly. She meant it when she said
that she was going to be near him when he slept. In
truth, he would have been happy if Holly just slept with
him and Rachel.

But that was where Rachel drew the line. She didn't mind
him having sex with the beautiful Protector, but she
would be damned if she stole cuddling time away from her.
That flattered Gabriel in a small way, a little anyway.

Gabriel was drawn out of his reverie by the sound of
Holly's voice. "I'm sorry I wasn't there when you needed
me. I know I screwed up."

Gabriel gave her a blank look, because he hadn't the
faintest idea in hell what the young Protector was
talking about. Then it came to him: She thought she
wasn't there, or didn't get there quick enough. "Don't
worry about it, Holls. Hopefully I won't be dumb enough
to do this again."

Then she gave the beautiful brunette a wink, followed by
a small chuckle that escaped his chest. It seemed to
pacify her somewhat and that made Gabriel feel a little
better. He really didn't like anyone to feel bad about
something he did. Because if there was one thing he knew:
It was what it was like to feel bad. He learned that well
in foster-care.

"What happened to Connie? Did she just leave the mall?"
Gabriel asked. And then he watched as Rachel started to
look at her shoes and a look of worry flashed across her
face. Gabriel felt a sickening feeling in the pit of his
stomach. Did I turn her into a vegetable? He asked
himself, very distraught. "Spit it out, Rach. What did I
do to her?"

"Well... Look, its not as bad as its gonna sound. You
have to remember that a lot of Chosens do it on purpose
all the time. And so-" Then she saw Gabriel's impatient
look and just spit it out. "She's drop dead in love with
you and can't leave you're side for very long, or she may
sink into a deep depression. She's in the kitchen right
now, talking to Mom."

Gabriel's facial expressions were completely neutral...
Save for the fact that his eyes were like saucers. "W-
What?" I *know* I didn't hear that right. His mind
screeched.

"She's your Follower, Gabriel. Only she still has most of
her personality." Holly said with bluntness that Gabriel
sort of admired and sort of hated. She saw that he was
about to argue and she could tell by the look on his face
that he really didn't want a Follower. "Before you say
anything, hear me out, please?" Holly knew that she might
be out of line talking to her boss like this, but she
thought the girl (Connie) might be good for his training.

She watched as Gabriel gave her one of his trademark
shrugs, allowing her to continue.

So she did. "What Rachel told you, is basically true.
Most Chosens have at least two followers. You could turn
this into an opportunity. This girl will be perfect for
you to practice the more advanced Mind Control techniques
that Rachel is going to teach. Plus, SOMA will respect
you more if you already have a Follower. Don't ask me
why, but they will."

"And don't let your morals get in your way. This is
basically one of the many things that Chosens can do. And
we all know it's a shame to waste talent." Rachel added
with a small gleam in her eye.

"Then why don't you have a follower?" Gabriel retorted,
still a little stunned at their casual attitude towards
this. But he did have to admit that he was slowly warming
to the idea, very slowly though. What have I got myself
into? He asked himself, half amused and half confused.

Rachel brightened at the question, as if she were
expecting it, which she had. "Oh, I'll get one. I just
haven't found the right one yet." She stated with a coy
look.

"Look, Gabriel, why don't you let us bring Connie up, and
you can decide on your own. But keep in mind, if you turn
the girl away, it could very well shatter her." She and
Holly started to walk to his door at that moment.

Holly stopped at the last moment, turned, then looked
Gabriel directly in the eyes. <'I took the time to look
into the kid's mind. And if you would bother to search
yours, you would know what her home life is like. At
least here she could be happy.'> She finished and walked
out the door and shut it behind her.

Gabriel laid back and relaxed against his pillow. He
could tell from the sensations of the covers moving over
his body that he was completely nude. Why did they
undress me? He wondered to himself. But, in his opinion,
that was the least of his problems.

Gabriel laid back and searched his mind for Connie's
past. It was a lot easier than he thought that it would
be. But what he found there made him shake, not from
fear, but from barely checked rage. The girl had scars on
her back where her father (a Preacher, no less) had taken
a thin, but cutting belt to her. He did this for her so-
called sins with a date. Her *big* sin was giving him a
light kiss on the lips and telling him she had a
wonderful time.

And then, after she was in bed, the father committed some
"sins" of his own when she was in her nightgown. If I
meet the man, I'm gonna gut the fucker from groin to
gullet. Gabriel thought clenching his jaw, his eyes as
hard as flint.

Gabriel didn't know it, but the link he had with Connie
earlier was still there. He felt something for her. But
it wasn't like the love that he had with Rachel, it was
more of a need to protect her and make her happy. Even if
that meant messing with her thoughts a little. It was a
price to pay. He didn't know if it was worth it, or fair
to Connie, but he was going follow Rachel and Holly's
advice on the matter.

Going over the girl's past and her suicidal thoughts,
Gabriel's own past was starting to pop up in his head as
well. And that was something that he definitely didn't
want to relive. He had his scars, just like the girl, but
his were more. Not that it was a contest. But he just
couldn't, for the life of him, understand why someone
would want to do that to a child.

But then again, nobody ever said life was fair. And if
they did, they were lying through their fucking teeth. He
thought darkly, hoping the girl would hurry up and get to
his room so he could talk to her, so he could take his
mind off his own past. He was also trying to figure out
what to do if the girl was upset. Gabriel always knew
that he wasn't much for words.

At about that time, there was a light knock at his door.
"Yeah," Gabriel called out his usual greeting. Some would
call it insensitive, but he never thought of it that way.

Then he was in for a sight. The fourteen-year-old girl
walked in and Gabriel's jaw almost dropped. She was
wearing nothing but a man's button-up shirt, that had the
first four buttons undone. It showed off her amazing
(well, amazing for a fourteen-year-old) legs and just a
hint of cleavage from her still growing breasts.

Before she said anything, Gabriel did a surface scan of
her thoughts and found that the shirt was Rachel's idea.
The little minx. I guess she *really* wants me to keep
this beautiful redhead. He thought. And he could see that
the girl was worried, and the thoughts she was giving off
were a little strange. She was both afraid of being
beaten and being (because she loved Gabriel) rejected.

Gabriel pushed himself further to the right side of the
bed, and patted the empty spot with a mute invitation,
all the while giving her a reassuring smile. <'C'mon,
Kid, I promise I won't hurt you.'>

Connie looked a little surprised at having a voice in her
head. But she made her way to the bed timidly, hoping on
softly. Gabriel watched her carefully. He could almost
smell the nervousness that was radiating off her. Since
he didn't know how to Manipulate Thoughts yet, the black
haired boy didn't have a clue as to how to calm her down.

I have to figure out a way to make her trust me. He
thought. Then a idea came to him. He reached out and took
her hand, she flinch a little, only a little. Then he
looked into her dark green eyes as he concentrated on
their link.

Gabriel found it hard to believe, but safety *was* an
emotion. And emotions were the one thing he knew that he
could control without much trouble. And he saw all the
colors and zeroed in on the light blue and made it even
brighter.

Gabriel felt the fear fade away from her almost
instantly. But that was only part of the plan for her
trust. When he spoke, it was in the same calm and
reassuring voice. "Are you still scared?"

"Nay, I no longer be scared of ye," She replied, her
Irish brogue was thick and held a hint of a smile behind
it, even though it didn't show on her face. "What did ye
do to me?"

"Nothing much. Just something I learned not to long ago,"
He paused. Gabriel found her accent very sexy, almost
exotic. "But I would like to do something else for you."
He added with a coy smile.

"But you have to take off your shirt first," Gabriel
watched as a look of worry passed over her eyes. "So I
can give you a massage. It will help you relax." And
trust me more. His thoughts added. Gabriel then read her
thoughts and knew why she was wary.

"You don't have to wary about the scars on your back,
Connie. Believe me, I've seen much worse." Gabriel's
voice sounded haunted and his face didn't look much
better. God, how he hated reliving his past.

The redhead downcast her eyes as she started to take off
the shirt she was wearing. "I'm gonna go get some baby
oil out of the bathroom." He stated, just in case the
girl was modest.

As Gabriel made his way to the bathroom, he was thinking
of one word: Changes. And the changes he was thinking of
had nothing to do with mental powers. They had to do with
his personality. Gabriel knew that his personality had
changed drastically (at least to him) in the last eight
days. And he would be lying if he said that it didn't
worry him a little.

Take the beautiful redhead that was laying in his bed at
the moment. Nine days ago, he wouldn't have felt one
shred of remorse for the girl. He would have thought that
that was just how life went. Some people got dealt a good
hand in life; others (like the girl) got dealt a shitty
one. But it was up to the person to deal with what they
got. Help was far and few between and he never relied on
it and hardly *ever* gave it.

Gabriel wondered what had happened so much in the last
eight days that had changed his way of thinking so much.
Surely being around Rachel, Dawna and Holly wasn't
changing him that much, or was it? And if so, was it a
good thing? Him dropping his defenses like this? These
were the thoughts that were running through his head as
he searched for the baby oil in the bathroom.

*

Connie laid completely naked on Gabriel's bed on her
stomach. She was vividly aware of the scars that she knew
were showing. They were not large, and they didn't stand
out much, they were pretty light. But they were there
nonetheless.

Her thoughts, like Gabriel's, were in a whirlwind of
motion. She couldn't believe how much she cared for this
boy named Gabriel. She... She loved him. How can I love
him? We've barely spoken to each other. Her thoughts
asked.

But she had to admit; everyone in the Wilson household
was being very nice to her. It was nothing like at her
home. My home? Her eyes darted to the clock that was on
Gabriel's nightstand. She was *very* late. My Dad's gonna
kill me! Her thoughts screamed. And the muscles in her
body seemed to tense in the anticipation of the beating
that she was going to receive.

Maybe Gabriel will protect me. I know he had to use some
kind of magic to make me love him. She thought. Before
this day, Connie didn't believe in things like magic, but
she knew that it had to be magic for her to feel the way
she did about Gabriel.

And if Gabriel doesn't protect me, there's no telling how
bad the whipping I'll get this time will be. She thought
with a sense of dread.

"Your 'Dad' ain't gonna do shit to you. And if he tries,
it'll be the last fuckin' thing he does." Gabriel said
with a no nonsense voice as he walked back into the room,
baby oil in hand. It was only then that he realized that
he was still stark naked, but he was surprised that he
really didn't much care.

Gabriel's eyes were glacial when he said those words and
Connie had no problem believing he meant every word. "Ye
can read my thoughts?"

Gabriel gave her a self-deprecating shrug. "Yeah, but
it's not that big of a deal... I'll stop if you want me
to." He replied as he moved closer to the bed.

He already knows everything about me anyway, from what
Dawna said downstairs. She thought. "No, I don't mind.
But if I ask ye to stop later, would ya?"

Gabriel gave her a half-cocked smile. "You got it." He
replied, lifting the baby oil invitingly. "You ready to
relax? You look like you're wound so tight that you might
snap in two.

She gave him a girlish and sweet smile and nodded. Then
laid her head on the pillow, trying to relax. Gabriel. Ye
have to admit, it has a ring to it. Was her last thought
as she turned herself over to his capable hands.

Gabriel's plan was for a slow massage and then an even a
slower lovemaking session, to show the girl that there
were still people in the world that could be gentle,
unlike her father. But the girl was in a deep sleep not
even two minutes into the massage.

Author's Note: I know there was not a lot of action or
sex in this chapter. I'm saving that for chapter five,
when I'll introduce SOMA. (School of Mental Acuity) So,
until then, please send all your comments to
