The eastern sky was just breaking into typical Texas summer day, hot,
sunny and not a cloud in the sky. The quiet of the barn was disturbed
by the girl saddling the gelding, talking to him in slow mummers as
she worked steadly hoping to make a hasty retreat from the ranch to
the solitude of the prairie. With the experience of generations of
cowboys in her fingers she had him bridled, saddled, was on him and
gone before the rest of the ranch stirred from their slumber.
******
"Kate, I'd been looking for you all morning. Pa sent me, you are to
come back now and get ready for the Mayor's barbecue and he said I was
to take no spit from you, you're going and there was no more to be said.
Now Kate that is pa's message ok, not mine so before you
start yelling at me and cursing that gelding you have there is the
biggest piece of horse trash I ever saw . . . "
And with these words the fifteen-year-old boy turned his horse around
and lit out of there like the whole Comanche nation was after him
instead of his 22-year-old sister. Both the boy, with the girl in
pursuit moved with the fluid grace that almost made each horse and
rider appear as one beast as they raced toward the ranch in the mid
morning sunlight. With the house in sight the girl spurred her horse on
so she passed the boy and his mount with what seemed like little effort.
She stopped the horse in front of the porch and jumped from the saddle,
to touch the porch first, the obvious intent to this game.
"Katie girl, you are going to ruin that boy, let him win at least once
in awhile."
"Never Pa he is such a little weasel"
"A LITTLE weasel I am not so sure. He is at least three hands taller
than you that is for sure." As the second rider came flying around the
corner to the touch the porch.
The older man looked lovingly on both his off spring. "Boy I said fetch
her not race her, you know she was born in a saddle."
"Yes sir, but she would not come unless I made it easy on her and let
her race back and beat me."
Kate turned her fiery eyes on her brother "Made it easy on me! Let me
beat you. Why you little . . . "
"Ok, Ok you two, Tim take both the horses to the barn and ask Blue to
help you cool them off while I talk to your sister."
"Yes sir," the boy replied as he stooped to pick up the hastily
discarded reins and lead the two horses toward the barn.
"Kate, I need you to help set up for this barbecue, you know me and the
hands are no good at this sort of thing so I want you get cleaned up,
come back down here and tell us what to do. I need you to be my
hostess. You know since your Mother died I have relied on you for this
type of thing. The Mayor and his family will be here any minute, the
meat's about ready and well the tables and such need tending."
"Pa, I don't understand why we have to have the MAYOR'S barbecue? I
mean it is his idea, he pays for the food, he sends out the invites.
Why here?"
"Katie, you know he likes to have at a ranch and not in town, now I said
we would host it and so we will, now go get cleaned up. Please, honey."
Kate resigned to having to play hostess at the barbecue, turned and
started to enter the house.
"Oh and Kate, Rob is coming too, but I suspect you knew that since you
just had to go riding early this morning. Do not let him spoil your
day."
She just sighed as she went on in and upstairs.
The older man just shook his head as he went off the porch toward the
stand of trees where the tables and barbecue pit had been placed.
Upstairs Kate undressed and looked at her young body in the mirror
giving herself a very critical self appraisal. As she ran her hands
over her soft skin, she thought her breasts were just right,
still upturned, a nice handful each, her nipples soft and pink. Her ass
nice and firm, strong tapered thighs and calves and what did her mother
call it . . . a well-turned ankle. She giggled at that not having a
clue what that meant. She reached up and released her auburn tresses,
she had hastily pinned up to fit under her hat, allowing them to fall
about her shoulders. The natural curl drove her
crazy but in actual fact her hair framed her face making her dark eyes
appear larger and more expressive. She turned to look at her abdomen
noting it was still flat and hard not like some of her old high school
classmates that had already had at least one baby. She quietly slipped
her fingers into her pussy as she dreamed about meeting her Mr. Right
and staring her own family, allowing the
intensity of sensation to build, feeling her nipples harden, getting
closer to climax . . .
"Kate, the Mayor's here and pa wants you downstairs NOW."
Her daydreams vanished with those words, thinking to herself, she had to
find more for her brother to do, she retorted "I'll be down in a moment,
I have to change."
She then hustled into the shower, sighing she had been so close.
Finishing the shower in record time she wrapped a towel around her wet
hair as she tried to decide exactly what to wear. She knew pa hoped she
would wear a dress and she did want to please him but she
had to face it, Rob, her old high school sweet heart, no that wasn't
right her old high school heart breaker was home from college and
coming. This was the first time she'd seen him since he left
almost four years ago. She scoffed to think that once he got east he
seemed to prefer it to coming back to Texas. Fine she was a Texas girl
and so she would dress like what she wanted, she was no dainty thing
that had to dress up to catch a man. Once in her bedroom she
pulled out her new jeans that were tight in just the right places, her
new rodeo shirt, the white one with the little pearl snaps. She liked
the way it hugged her breast line and then in a glimmer of revenge
decided to go braless so Rob could be teased by what he could see but no
longer touch. As her final touch she pulled on her black boots that
brought her height now to all of 5'3". She turned in
the mirror admiring her reflection noting not a wrinkle anywhere to mar
the straight firm lines of the clothes as they hugged her form. She
turned to look again at her reflection in the mirror. The shirt, was
not quite right, opening it just enough so her cleavage was apparent but
not too bodacious. She giggled to herself thinking well Mr. eastern
collage boy welcome back to Texas. She flipped the towel off her head
letting the damp hair curl in the heat applied just a hint of make-up
and descended the stairs ready to face her father and guests.
As she hit the bottom landing, she heard voices through the screen door,
yup there were her father, the Mayor and Rob. She paused for a minute
to hear the tone of the conversation.
"Well Jordan I understand your daughter has got another grand champion
Appaloosa. You gonna sell this one or breed it?"
"To be honest Mr. Mayor I leave that up to Kate, she knows the horses, I
am just a cattleman. Now Rob, glad to see you back, how'd you like
college, Yale wasn't it?"
Not wanting to hear Rob's reply and thinking no time like the present
she strode out to join the conversation and make sure everything was as
ready as possible for this shindig. All eyes turned
to her, her father somewhat dismayed to see her attire, the Mayor trying
to appear coy and the reaction from Rob, well she thought slack jawed
described it. Giggling to herself, she asked.
"Yes Rob how did you find those . . . cold . . . eastern . . . nights?"
as she laid a hand lightly on his arm so he had to turn to face her.
Trying to catch his eyes as they flitted down to her
cleavage and back up to her eyes, she added, "hum mm I want to know."
The two young people locked in a silent communication with their eyes
were brought back to the mundane with a cough by the Mayor and the
observation that the rest of the invitees were within sight.
"I gotta go and check the tables, pa, Mr. Mayor, Rob will you excuse
me," as she turned away and stepped off the porch striding to the picnic
area to inspect the readiness. Making sure all 12 rectangular tables,
each seating 15 to a side, were set with flowers, plenty
of lemonade, ice tea and beer. The buffet serving table was ready with
the large cutting boards, the chafing dishes individually filled with
either potato salad, butter beans, or corn on the cob. The strawberries
were chilling and the shortcake and ice cream were almost ready. The
outdoor lights had been strung all looked in readiness to her. She knew
her father really didn't "need" her, the serving women the mayor had
contracted with did all the work, he just wanted her there to be his
hostess.
Fine she had done her obligatory inspection. Complementing all the
women on their hard work Kate decided to stay in the shade of the trees
and greet the visiting families. As entertaining as it
had been to initially tease Rob, the interchange had actually opened old
wounds that she had worked very hard to at least ignore, since she had
been unable to close them entirely. Kate resolved not be alone with him
anymore this day. It hurt too much.
Just as the mayor had said all kinds of trucks and cars were coming down
the country road and turning into the ranch. The hands directed traffic
putting most of the modern conveyances in the open field back of the
barn. Those that rode horses were invited to put them
in the paddock and the buggies and pony carts were parked in the shade
provided by the east side of the barn. All the families looked forward
to the summer barbecue, calving was over and the kids were out of
school. This time of year tended to be a more quiet time until the fall
when the herds were rounded up and the heifers separated for branding
and sale. Now everyone could sit back eat,
and brag on how well all was going.
Kate mingled with all her neighbors, making sure she had a lot of
distance between her and Rob. As he moved toward her she moved away,
for the observant they seemed like two wolves constantly circling a
herd. Kate grew tired of the game and sat for a moment to drink some
lemonade.
"Kate, can we stop for a minute?"
"Stop what? Rob."
"This game of chase around the barbecue."
"I guess I didn't have anything to say to you. I guess you said it all
when you left."
"Kate, please let's talk."
"Why did you leave? I don't understand it."
Rob sat down next to her trying to catch her eye, anxious to explain, "I
had to leave I had to find out about the rest of the world, I want to be
something other than a west Texas rancher."
"But that summer after we graduated, we were together all the time,
everyone thought we would get married, hell I even thought we would get
married."
"I know, I know, but I wasn't ready to get married I wanted to go on to
college and when the scholarship came through well I took it in a heart
beat."
"And never looked back?"
"No, I looked back I just didn't stay back. I knew I'd be home again
someday and maybe you would at least talk to me again, at least smile at
me. To be honest I expected you to have at least two kids by now and be
settled down on some nice place raising those Appaloosa
horses you're so fond of."
Looking down she answered quietly, "So did I, so did I. Well what do
we talk about now?"
"Let's not talk about anything important right now, do you remember when
we were kids together we would ride out and sit watching the prairie dog
town. How busy they were and make up stories about their lives."
"Yes, I remember . . . do you want to do that again?"
"Yea I do, I've heard nothing but what has changed around here now I
want to see what has stayed the same."
With a sly smile she turned and walked toward the barn asking him, "you
do remember how to ride don't you or have fast cars replaced fast
horses."
"Oh no I remember how to ride, you know I am three months older than you
so I have that much more riding experience, even thought I didn't ride
much at college."
"Oh let me see if I can find one of those little bitty eastern saddles
and I'll make sure it has a seat belt for you," she giggled.
He smiled at that hoping they were over the rough spots.
In a blink of an eye she had two horses saddled and ready to go, both
beautiful, full bloodied Appaloosa champions. She giggled as she teased
if he remembered which side to mount but soon they were off.
They rode mostly in silence enjoying the day. He had forgotten how
intoxicating the smell of horse and leather was. The feel of a fine
animal as it moved along the trail. He had missed riding but not enough
to make it part of his life's work.
She broke his thoughts with the smart comment, "How you holding up
there, ok, dude?"
"Who are you calling a dude?"
"Well, all we've done is walk these horses, a real cowboy would want to
give them some exercise but since you need to get your legs back I guess
it's ok just to walk along on this trail. I just hope we can get out
there and back by midnight at this pace."
Rob knew a challenge when he heard it. He gave the animal a tap to the
sides and as if reading his thoughts the horse took off at a gallop
leaving Kate only momentarily behind.
Laughing and kidding each other about who really won they stopped and
looked out over the land at all the dug holes each one a home for a
prairie dog and it's family.
They watched for a few minutes then dismounted in the trees loosening
the cinches on the saddles, leaving their horses to quietly graze. Kate
sat down and just watched the town in renewed fascination. Rob
moved it next to her, looking only at her, he broke the silence with,
"You know I missed you?"
"I couldn't tell that."
"I wrote. I wrote you a lot of letters but you ever hardly wrote back."
"I know, Rob, but you know me, school was never my thing, writing. I am
the kind of girl that likes action and purposeful behavior, don't write
and tell me you miss me, come here and tell me you miss, me show me you
missed me."
"Show you like this," as he slid closer to her leaned over and gave her
a deep sensual kiss.
"Yes, like that." She giggled as she looked into his eyes. She missed
him, missed him terribly, more than she could say adequately with words.
Words could always be misunderstood, action was rarely misunderstood she
thought as she pulled him down to her, closing
her eyes as asking for another kiss.
He wanted more than a kiss this time, he wanted to taste her, take her
in all of her, possess her for this moment. He started kissing her
softly around the ears, slowly working down her neck,
between each kiss saying, "and I missed this part of you, and this
part."
She squirmed under the attention of the small kisses, feelings she had
tried to suppress were bubbling up to the top. Half of her wanted to be
angry, tell him to get lost, he was too late, the
other wanted him to continue, not only continue but progress. It was
not just her mind versus her body, it was her feeling of rejection
versus wanting love and affection. Her body had made it's statement it
was aroused and ready for more.
His small kisses having now moved down to the open collar of her shirt,
he looked up into her eyes as he reached this natural barrier searching
for any sign of encouragement. She moved her
fingers to quickly open the snaps on the shirt inquiring "did you miss
these?"
He smiled answering, "Yes Mam," in his best west Texas accent as he
began his little kisses again to each breast. He leaned down to kiss
the nipple but actually sucked the little nub into his mouth, playing
his tongue over it until he heard her respond. He felt her fingers
fumbling with his belt.
"Kate, you don't have to do this."
"I know I don't, listen here Rob Saunders have you ever known me to do
something I didn't want to?"
He pretended to think for a second, but in his heart he knew if she
didn't she wouldn't, not like this for sure. "No, I guess I can't say
as I have . . . "
"Ok, then kiss me and let's get back to where we were."
He loved her complete self assurance, her desires to have pleasure and
give pleasure. He had missed her.
He felt her fingers again on his belt, working the buckle open, her soft
hand snaking down inside his jeans, pulling the zipper open, slowly
moving his underwear out of the way and then taking his cock in her soft
hand as she stroked his shaft. A groan escaped from his
lips. He could hardly stand it, he knew he was close, hell once he had
seen her, smelled her hair he had been close. He fumbled with her
pants, thinking why had she decided to wear jeans, almost
ripping open the zipper, caught totally off guard as she had no panties
on and looking again into her eyes for encouragement. He moved away from
her hands and began to kiss her pussy.
Her woman smell almost over powering him, oh how he had missed her. She
responded to his kisses by rhythmically moving her hips, allowing
herself to be caught up in the sensations. The ache between his legs
was getting worse so he moved up and gave her a long deep kiss, having
her taste herself on his lips. "Kate" was all he said as she kicked off
her boots and began wiggling out of her jeans.
"Rob, I missed you too," was her answer as he positioned his cock head
to the opening of her vagina and gently began impaling her on his cock.
She felt so good, warm, and tight, responding to each of his thrusts
with a squeeze of her muscles to his cock. Her arms held him tight to
her chest as she brought up her legs to his waist so she
could feel the power of him as they moved together nearing their mutual
climax.
The prairie dogs scattered with the frenzy of activity and the outcries
of mutual release.
They laid together, just holding each other allowing each to be lost in
their own thoughts. Kate shifted and Rob released her.
"I had forgotten how lumpy jeans can be when you lay on 'em."
"Yea, and belt buckles," as he shifted trying to get his pants back up
and straight. Finally sighing in frustration and just standing up to do
it. As he stood there he adoringly watched her sitting on
the ground pulling on her pants and then her boots.
"Kate"
"Yea, give me a second, then we can head back."
"No, not that I want to talk for a just a minute."
"Talk? Talk about what? You were great and well I was horny."
He crouched down and laying his hands on each of her shoulders looking
her straight in the eye, so she would not mistake his meaning, "Kate, I
want to talk about us. I want to marry you, so we
can start a family, be a family."
A tear formed in her eyes as she just put her head down and shook a
negative reply.
"Why Kate? I know you still have feelings for me. You still love me."
"Yes, I have feelings for you deep feelings. I love you. But you will
never be happy here and this is where I always knew where I would be out
here. As a child I always saw myself here with
horses, in the west Texas wind. I am a part of this land, this life. I
fell in love with you probably because you were so different. Sure you
were born here, you wore boots and jeans but they were never part of
you. You could ride with the best of us, even had a talent for it if
you tried, but it held no special allure. You dreamed of another life
in another place. Those days after graduation when you thought you were
not going on to college I saw a part of you begin to wither, that part
that had dreams outside of Pecos County. I saw that gregarious,
self-confident guy I loved turning into a disagreeable morose individual
I was having trouble
being with. I tried to do anything and everything to distract you from
the tenacious hold that mood had on you. Do you remember?"
"Yes", Rob started to laugh as in his minds, eyes he replayed those
images from years ago.
"The frilly dresses, the provocative gestures the moonlight drives and
finally giving you all of me."
Looking askance at her Rob rubbed her arm "You were quite brazed in
those days, fiery, I wondered what got into you."
"You got into me, I knew I was losing you and so I fought back with all
I had, but I knew it was a losing battle. I knew for you to be happy
you had to leave. You had to go and at least attempt those dreams. I
also know you are not really back are you?"
"No, I am not. I have a job in Chicago. I start in another two weeks.
Kate, I came back for you."
She looked away from him as tears began to form in her eyes. She took
his hand in both of hers as she put it in her cheek, hoping he would
not see her crying.
"Kate, they have canyons there too, sure they're steel and concrete but
none the less canyons, and we can board one of the horses in a stable
not far from where I have an apartment. And then we can buy a place
outside the city where you can have the horse right there. Kate, share
my dreams."
"Rob, please don't ask me. I can't choose."
"Sure you can!"
"No, this land, these horses, hell even this dirt is all apart of me. I
am a west Texas girl, and you, you are a boy from west Texas. I don't
know any better way to explain it."
"Kate, you said you loved me so come with me."
"I am afraid I would grow to hate you, hate Chicago and hate my life
there and then we both would be miserable. I also know you will never
be happy here, riding 5 miles to pick up the mail, waiting six weeks to
see a first-run movie. No you would be miserable here.
So as much as I love you, I won't go with you."
"Is this your final word on it today?" he asked smiling.
She looked askance at him, knowing something was going on in his mind.
"Yes it is."
"Okay I won't ask any more today, but I have two weeks to change your
mind and just like the west Texas gully washers I am going to convince
you and sweep you out of here."
She smiled to herself the self-confident, warm hearted man she had
fallen in love with was back, maybe . . . "Well right now get those
saddles tightened before Pa sends Tim out here to find us and we have
more explaining to do than a boy his age should know."
"Kate, I love you."
"I know, now hurry before my brother gets here." she giggled.
