{BlueWords} Coincidence (MF Rom)
There are some song lyrics below, and I want to give
the writers credit. The first is from a song called
"I Give In" by Charles Gorman (was in a local band
QID). The second, further down into the story, is
from a song called "You Break It" by John
Tesh/Michael Hanna/Diana DeWitt. The Beatles song
lyrics from "Eight Days a Week" are by either John
and/or Paul, I suppose. All lyrics are copyright by
the respective authors. I'm not trying to make any
money off their lyrics, just seemed appropriate to
include them in the story. Hopefully that doesn't
piss anyone off.

'I Give In' - QID
The traffic was light for a Saturday, and Jeremy was
thankful. He was heading out to the gym to work out,
like he usually did on Saturdays. Stopped at the
light, he was thinking about nothing in particular
when a Camero pulled up next to him on the left. It
was dark green and the engine hummed along well
tuned, which is what caused him to look.
"Man, that looks like my old Camero," he said to
himself. On closer inspection, he decided maybe it
was his old car. The color, the interior, even the
leather wheel cover, it all looked like his old car.
He didn't recognize the driver, but he'd sold it to a
dealer, so anyone could be driving it. What are the
chances of that? he wondered. He had traded in the
Camero for a little more practical car, a Honda
Civic. Better gas mileage, and 4-door, easier to take
passengers. A lot like the car that pulled up to him
on his right. He did a double take. The car on his
right was a maroon Civic, just like his had been.
There was a small dent in the driver's door, yes,
just like his. It was his old Civic. Now that was
just eerie, he thought. Two of his old cars, pulling
up right next to him. He half expected his old Nissan
to pull up behind him. Glancing in his review mirror,
he saw it. A light blue ZX, with a slight dent in the
hood pulled up right behind him, and honked its horn,
as the light had changed to green. Jeremy sat stunned
for a moment, then put his car into gear and moved on
down the street. The other cars turned off in other
directions and were soon gone.
"I must have been mistaken," he told himself. "No way
could all three of my old cars have pulled up to the
light the same time I was there." The Camero brought
back lots of memories. Susan, his girlfriend at the
time, and he made out in the Camero many times, up on
the hill near the University where they met. They
made out in the Civic, too, when they didn't feel
like going back to the dorms and fighting roommates
for privacy. Jeremy had traded in the Camero for the
Civic after getting tired of repair bills, and
deciding on something more practical.
Susan. There was someone he still missed. She was a
wonderful person. He'd gone out with her for almost
two years, before really screwing up the
relationship. He'd had family trouble. It had made
him become angry and he had driven her away. He'd
been too embarrassed to try and reconcile with her,
and he heard she had taken up with some other guy, so
he tried to close that chapter in his life. It had
been a year or so, and he'd had a few girlfriends
since, but no one really special. He supposed he
hadn't gotten over her after all.
"Man," he said to himself, "thought I was done with
her. Wonder what she's up to?" He shook his head. No
sense crying over spilt milk.
Jeremy pulled his Accord into the parking lot at the
gym. After he'd gotten a job upon getting out of
college, he upgraded his Civic to an Accord. The gym
was pretty crowded, but Jeremy didn't mind, and he
always managed a good workout. He liked to watch the
aerobics classes; some of the women in them were very
pretty and it was fun to watch them bounce around and
get all sweaty. Jeremy respected the women, though.
He'd tried to go to one of the classes once and
dropped out exhausted less than half way through.
As Jeremy was walking through the front door a woman
walked past him who he thought he recognized.
"Jennifer?" he said to her, in a surprised voice.
She stopped and turned to look at him, then a smile
lit up her face. "Jeremy! I wasn't expecting to see
you here," she said pleasantly. "How have you been?"
"Okay, I've been good. Got a job and everything." He
thought he sounded awkward. He dated Jennifer for
about two months after he'd broken up with Susan.
There were no sparks between them, and they had just
stopped seeing each other after a while. "How are you
doing?"
"I'm doing fine. I'm engaged, to Bill Hendricks, not
sure if you knew him, he was double E. Plan on tying
the knot in six months or so."
"That's great, congratulations. I'm really happy for
you," Jeremy was beginning to regret having stopped
her. Everything he said sounded lame to himself.
"How about you, Jer? You ever get back together with
Susan?" Jeremy's face went white, but Jennifer didn't
seem to notice his surprise and discomfort.
"Um, no, I haven't seen her in, well, since before I
went out with you." Jeremy shifted his feet. He
wished he could be somewhere else right now.
"Oh. Sorry, but you talked about her a lot when you
were going with me, I just thought maybe you might
have gotten back together. From what I remember, you
two made a good couple." Jeremy was really surprised
now. He was surprised Jennifer would remember
something like that, and he was surprised he'd talked
about Susan to her. He didn't remember doing that. Of
course, he'd been a head case back then.
"Yeah, well, uh thanks. I, well it's been nice
talking with you Jen, but I need to get into class."
It was a lie, he only did the weight machines or free
weights, but he felt queasy, and wanted to get away
from talking about Susan.
"Okay, well, have fun, Jeremy. It's been nice talking
to you." She waved, turned around and walked off to
her car. Jeremy shook a little inside, then turned to
enter the gym.
Today was one of the damnedest days he'd had in a
while. Seeing all of his old cars, running into
Jennifer. These things were reminding him of Susan,
and how much he'd tried, unsuccessfully, to forget
her. He went through his workout, but his mind was a
million miles away. Or more precisely, about three
years away.
He'd met her at a frat party one of his friends
invited him to during the second month of his junior
year. Jeremy wasn't in a fraternity, but since some
of his friends were, he went to the parties
sometimes. Susan was standing in one corner of the
room, nursing a beer, not quite getting into the
scene. He felt kind of out of place as well; parties
weren't all that interesting to him. He screwed up
his courage and approached her, asking her to dance.
He could see the hesitance in her eyes, her lovely
blue eyes. But something changed as she looked at
him. Her face lit up a little, and she say yes. They
set their drinks down and did not returned to them.
The DJ at the party was playing a mix of tunes, old
stuff from the 70's and 80's and early ninety's He'd
even played a few Beatles tunes, and people had a
hard time figuring out how to dance to them. Jeremy
wasn't the greatest dancer in the world, but Susan
didn't seemed to mind. Finally she told him she was a
little tired, maybe they could go outside for some
fresh air. They ended up walking all around the
campus, talking about anything and everything. It was
pretty late when Jeremy finally glanced at his watch.
"Oh, man, I really hate to break this up, but I've
got a eight o'clock tomorrow, I need to get at least
a little sleep."
Susan had been surprised at what time it was, too.
"That's okay, I need to get up early, too."
"Walk you to your dorm?" he asked.
She laughed. It was a pleasant laugh that he'd heard
many times during their talks. He liked it. "Sure,"
she said, pointing to the building they stood in
front of, "we're here."
"Oh, great. I, uh, I'd like to see you again, Susan."
Jeremy was a bit shy. He thought he was terrible at
meeting women, and hadn't had much luck so far. He
was hoping just that he wouldn't say anything dumb.
To his surprise, she readily agreed. "I'd like that,
too, Jeremy." She pulled a piece of paper down from a
nearby pole and wrote her phone number on the back.
"Give me a call tomorrow after dinner. We can go see
a movie or something."
Jeremy was smiling his biggest grin ever, before he
realized it and tried to reign it in, not too
successfully. "Great! I, I'll call you tomorrow." He
was unsure of what else to say or do, and he was
about to just say goodbye and walk off. Susan
surprised him again by leaning forward and kissing
him lightly on the mouth.
"I'll be looking forward to it," she said, then she
walked up the stairs to the dorm, turning and waving
before going inside. Jeremy stood there a while
before deciding he should probably go back to his
dorm and try to get some sleep. Walking back, he
examined the paper with her number on it. It had been
a poster for a science fiction movie festival on
campus, the picture on the poster from a movie called
"Dark Star" of a man surfing in outer space. Jeremy
still had the poster, even all these years later.
The next night, they ended up going to see "Forest
Gump". And they went out for coffee afterwards and
talked late into the night again. Even when they
didn't agree, they got along well enough to discuss
things instead of argue about them. At the end of the
date, the goodnight kiss was longer and mutual. That
had started their relationship, and it lasted for 2
years before - what. Before I screwed up, he thought.
He found himself done with his weight routine without
a clear memory of having done it. His muscles ached,
so he must have done something. He decided to take
his normal run in the nearby park, maybe it would
help clear the cobwebs from his mind.
The park was close to the gym and his old college.
Many of the people that went to the gym preferred to
run in the park instead of at the gym, at least when
the weather was nice like it was today. Jeremy jogged
along the park, not thinking about much, trying to
set a good pace. He ran by a young man sitting on a
bench with a boom box. The radio on the stereo was
playing "Reminiscing" by the Little River Band. He
slowed to a stop and leaned against a tree, trying to
catch his breath.
The whole world is against me today, he thought. That
song had been "their" song. It was at least 10 years
old by the time he and Susan had started dating, but
they played the song at dance clubs sometimes, and
they both liked it. They had been going together for
several months, and Susan decided they needed a song.
Jeremy, being ever practical, said, "Well, how about
this one?" They'd been dancing, and "Reminiscing" was
playing at the time. Susan had laughed and agreed.
Jeremy remembered that night for something else. It
was the first time he and Susan had made love.
They had made out often, in his Camero or in the park
or in a movie theater, but they never went much
beyond second base. Jeremy's roommate was leaving
school for the break, and it had been Susan who'd
suggested they go back to his dorm, since they would
now have some privacy.
At the dorm room, Jeremy was nervous as hell. He got
her a soda and they sat on the couch and talked for
half an hour before started to make out. They kissed
passionately, running their hands over each other.
Jeremy was fondling her breasts through her blouse
and brassiere, something he had done before, when she
reached up and unbuttoned her blouse, something she
had not done before. He was trying to act cool, but
was too astonished to help her. She pulled the open
blouse out of her skirt and let it hang loosely from
her shoulders, exposing her brassiere. He leaned into
her and starter to nibble on her neck and shoulders,
slowly working his way down to the exposed tops of
her breasts. She made little cooing noises while he
did this, evidently liking it. He reached up and
pulled the brassiere down slightly, exposing her left
nipple. Gently, he licked the nipple, which responded
by getting hard, the tip poking out. Jeremy sucked on
her breast, pulling much of it into his mouth,
causing Susan to gasp. He repeated this treatment on
her other breast, and she grabbed his head in both
hands and ran her fingers through his hair.
Jeremy reached around and unclasped her bra, luckily
getting it on the first try. Susan sort of shrugged
her shoulders and her blouse and bra both fell down
her arms. She pulled her hands out of her sleeves and
tossed the clothes to the side. Jeremy went back to
kissing her breasts, switching from one to the other,
getting both nipples hard. Susan moaned some more at
this treatment. She reached for his shirt and started
unbuttoning it, pulling it down his back and off his
arms. Then she stood up and reached for his hand.
Wordlessly, she led him into the bedroom to his bed.
Before getting into bed, she unzipped her skirt,
letting it drop to the floor, and kicked off her
shoes. She laid back on the bed, wearing only her
white panties. Jeremy followed her lead and kicked
off his shoes, unbuckled his pants and let them fall
to the floor. He pulled his socks off and climbed on
the bed on top of her.
For a while, they just resumed their necking. Then
Susan reached down and tugged at his briefs, so he
pulled them off while continuing to suck on one of
her breasts. She rubbed his cock, already hard, and
made it harder still. Jeremy had to concentrate not
to come in her hands. He reached down and guided her
panties off of her hips and legs. Her bush was
trimmed in a small triangle, above wet, open lips. He
was about to kiss her there when she tugged at his
shoulders. "Oh, Jeremy, please, fuck me, now," she
pleaded.
"God, yes," he answered. He reached into the drawer
of the bedside table an fumbled around for a condom.
Getting one, he opened the package and pulled it out.
Susan took it from him and rolled it over erection
down to the base of his penis. Jeremy crawled between
her legs and placed the tip of his penis at the
entrance of her vagina. He teased her a bit, pushing
in just a little. She groaned in frustration and
desire. The condom helped him to hold back his own
orgasm. While Jeremy hadn't had many experiences, he
knew enough to try and hold off a while, allowing the
woman to build up her pleasure before taking his. His
orgasms were usually stronger if he held them back a
while, anyway. Slowly he pushed into her, causing her
to gasp. She pushed her hips at him, trying to force
him in deeper. He controlled himself, teasing her as
much as he could. He was doing something right,
because her breath was coming in gasps, and she was
trying to grasp his penis with the walls of her
vagina. He started using strong strokes, almost all
the way out then in again deep.
"Yes, oh yes," she moaned. He was pretty sure she was
getting close, which was good; he didn't know how
much longer he could last. She grabbed him and pulled
him close to her and cried out. He thrust as fast and
hard as he could and came a few moments later. He
kept up his thrusts for a minute afterwards,
eventually slowing down. Before he became completely
limp, he grabbed the base of the condom and held it
around his penis as he withdrew. He rolled off of her
to one side, pulled the condom off and set it on its
wrapper on the bedside table. Then her rolled back to
her and hugged her, idly kissing her neck.
"Oh, Jeremy, you are so good, so nice," she breathed
into his ear.
"Well, I haven't really had a lot of practice, but
I'm very glad you enjoyed it," he whispered back.
"I won't pretend I've never done that before, but you
are definitely the best I've known. You cared about
me, my pleasure." She kissed him passionately on the
mouth, and he responded in kind, their tongues
fighting a gentle battle. When they broke off the
kiss, she whispered, "I love you, Jeremy."
Jeremy buried his head in her shoulders and hugged
her tight. He wanted to say he loved her too, but he
was afraid, even after have been so close to her.
Tears welled up in his eyes, but he held her until
they went away and he could trust his voice again.
He had finally gotten up and asked her if she wanted
anything, and went to get her a another soda. They
had made love again that night and she slept there
until morning. It turned out she was on the pill, and
so they didn't use condoms again after that, but even
the fact that he'd used one made her happy.
Jeremy broke out of his reverie of the past and
decided to start running again. He jogged on further
into the park, past kids playing frisbee, people
running with dogs, couples sitting on a park bench.
It was a beautiful sunny day. He ran past a large
column that kids from the campus had always used to
put posters up, advertising local bands, student
programs, rallies, all sorts of activities. One of
the posters made him stop dead.
The poster was for a science fiction movie festival
at the college. It had the same image of the man in a
space suit surfing past a space ship. The same
picture that was on the poster Susan had given him
her phone number on, three years ago.
"Christ, it can't be," he cried out. He must be going
insane, he thought. Insane with guilt and regret. The
post was fairly plastered with the posters, a normal
occurrence to make sure they're noticed. He went up
and studied one. It was a science fiction convention
again, same time every year, he knew. He and Susan
hadn't gone to the one the year he met her, but they
did go the next year. In fact, that was the night he
asked her to marry him.
They had seen the movies "Dark Star" and "2001: A
Space Odyssey", and visited the convention floor,
wandering around looking at all the weird stuff on
display and for sale. Several famous science fiction
authors were there, and they had literally bumped
into Harlan Ellison. After apologizing, Susan talked
to him a while. She was a big fan of his, having
collected most of his books. Jeremy was more in to
Asimov and Niven, but it was interesting to hear them
discuss some of his stories. Eventually, Ellison had
to go to a panel discussion, and Susan and Jeremy
decided to head out and get something to eat. After a
dinner, they went back to his dorm room. His roommate
was in town but out for a while, still at the
convention, Jeremy supposed. The headed for Jeremy's
bedroom and locked the door.
Susan had seemed particularly frisky that night.
Jeremy guessed that her period was coming up soon.
She was always friskier right before it started. He
wondered briefly how that worked, with her being on
the pill. She was undoing his belt before he had
finished locking the door, and quickly had his pants
and briefs down around his ankles. She knelt in front
of him and started to give him a really excellent
blow job.
"Jeez, I love it when you're horny," he told her. She
responded by starting to hum while she was sucking
his penis in her mouth. She would lick and suck the
end, then take most of it in her mouth and hum a
nondescript tune. Jeremy's legs felt weak, and he
could only make little grunting noises. His mind had
all but turned off under her assault. Suddenly she
stopped sucking and simply held his hard-on in her
hand, tightly.
"Jer-e-my," she said sweetly in a sing-song voice.
"Uh, yeah?" he managed to get out.
"Jer-e-meee, if I finish, will you do something for
me?" She was trying to look innocent, which wasn't
easy while kneeling in front of a hard, wet penis.
She has to ask? he thought. Right now he would kill
for her if she would only just finish the blow job.
"Anything, Susan, yes."
"I want you to go down on me, Jer-e-meee," she told
him. She loved teasing him like this, and he loved
it, too.
"Of course anything yes," he blurted out, adding
weakly, "please?"
She resumed her sucking, taking him deep into her
mouth. Jeremy considered himself very lucky indeed,
because Susan didn't mind swallowing, in fact she
told him she liked it. She quickly brought him to the
edge and then over, and his penis pulsed in her
mouth. He had a hard time remaining standing. After
making sure that he had given her all he had, she
jumped up and ran to the bed, wiggling out of her
tight jeans.
Jeremy quickly followed, shucking his shoes and
jeans, just leaving his socks on. She was completely
naked by the time he reached the bed. He pulled his
shirt off and almost dove between her legs. He knew
she didn't want any preliminaries now, she just
wanted him to suck and lick her until she came. He
immediately shoved his tongue into her wet vagina,
eliciting a gasp from her. He ran his tongue up
between her labia and gently flicked her clitoris. He
sucked on one of his fingers to get it wet and slid
it into her, then licked up and down over and just
below her clitoris. He pushed a second finger into
her, then trailed it down and gently pushed it at her
anus. She was very sensitive there and liked having
it touched. A few minutes of rubbing her g-spot,
fondling her anus and licking her clitoris and she
was crying out, grabbing at his hair. He stopped his
licking, but kept on moving his finger in and out of
her vagina. On impulse, he slowly pushed the finger
at her rear past her sphincter and in about an inch.
She responded by pushing back against it. He pushed
it in a little more and then simultaneously pushed
and pulled on both fingers, fucking her ass and
vagina at the same time. She moaned even more, and
rolled her head from side to side. He climbed up her
body until he could suck on her nipples. "Oh, god,
Jeremy," she said in a thick, dreamy voice. He
removed his fingers, but replace the one in her
vagina with his penis, which had become hard again.
Slowly, gently he fucked her. She hugged him, and
they rocked together for a long time. Jeremy finally
picked up his pace and thrust harder. Susan responded
to this, and it seemed to Jeremy that she was as
ready to have another orgasm as he was. He leaned
into her with his penis, trying to stimulate her
again. They were both close to coming.
"Yes, yes, there, fuck me there," she begged. Jeremy
continued what he was doing, holding back on his
orgasm as best he could. Finally, he felt her vagina
walls contract around his penis as she cried out
again. It was all he could take and he came, too.
They lay there awhile, just feeling each other
breathe. After a few minutes, Jeremy slid off her to
lay beside her, and idly ran his hand through her
hair. He finally broke the silence.
"Do you ever think of marriage, Susan?" he asked. She
turned to look him in the face.
"Sometimes, why?" she answered.
"I do, too. I - think we make a good couple. I was
wondering how you felt about it, about us."
Susan kissed him gently on the lips. "I love you,
Jeremy. Are, are you asking me, to, marry you?"
Jeremy stared back into her pretty blue eyes. A smile
crept across his face. "Yes, I guess I am."
She wrapped her arms around him and pulled him close
to her. Her lips at his ear, she said, simply,
softly, "Yes."
Jeremy was surprised to find he was crying tears of
joy, as was Susan. They held each other all night,
falling asleep with their arms still around each
other.
Tears ran down his face as he stood there remembering
that night. What he would give to be back during
those happy times. They had lasted another ten months
or so. They were going to wait until they were both
out of school before getting married, and she had
said she didn't want an engagement ring. But then
things started falling apart, and he made the one
mistake he still regretted.
Jeremy walked off to find a bench to sit down on,
wiping the tears from his face. I have to get a hold
of myself, he thought. I already beat myself up about
this a year ago. Then it hit him. It was a year ago,
almost exactly, that he had broken up with Susan. Or
rather, when he had caused her to walk out on him.
Just then, someone approached him.
"Jeremy? Jeremy Wilson? Is that you?" she said. He
looked up. It was Susan's old roommate. Of course it
was. Who else could it be on a day like today? What
was her name? Mary? Martha? Margaret? Margaret.
"Margaret? How are you? What are you doing here?"
"I'm in town for a few days to visit my family, and
thought I'd wander the old haunts a bit. Never
thought I'd run into any old friends." She paused,
then asked, "Jeremy, are you okay?" with genuine
concern in her voice.
Jeremy was unsure what she meant for a second, then
realized his eyes were probably red from his crying.
"Yeah, sorry, I,I just ran a bit more than I usually
do, I needed to sit down a while." He wiped his brow
with his sleeve while Margaret sat down next to him.
"So how have you been, Margaret?"
"Fine, fine. I took a job in California, it's pretty
good so far. Nice country out there. I don't live too
near any big cities, and where I work is not too far
from home so I avoid all the traffic. How about you?"
"I work here in town, programmer for one of the big
companies. I like it so far, too." Jeremy decided to
preempt questions about Susan by asking first
himself. "Have you seen anyone else from school?
Susan or anyone?"
"No, although I was going to look her up. We still
write to each other every once in a while. I do know
she is still living here. She hasn't gotten married
yet. I forget who she works for, somebody downtown."
This was news to Jeremy. He had completely lost track
of Susan after the break up, mostly because he felt
too guilty to see her again. He just assumed she'd
moved away.
"Jeremy, I need to get going, I'm meeting my folks
for lunch. It was nice talking to you. You take care,
okay?" She got up as he nodded at her.
"Okay, Margaret, you too." She waved goodbye and
walked off.
Jeremy felt a little like he had been on "This is
Your Life", only it was also a boxing match. He felt
really beat up. The last time he'd seen Margaret, he
was handing her some CDs he'd borrowed from Susan.
Susan had a pretty large collection with lots of
different artists. He had borrowed some Beatles, John
Tesh and K.D. Lang. He was going to return them to
Susan directly, but hadn't had the nerve to face her,
so he dropped them off at her dorm room when he knew
she'd be in class. Margaret had taken them and wasn't
very happy to see him. He didn't say much, just gave
them to her and left.
Jeremy's life at the time had been a roller coaster
ride, although it had mostly gone down hill.
Actually, Susan was the one good thing in his life
then, and he started to shut her out. He had trouble
dealing with his family life, and was so upset about
it he didn't see how it had affected her, too
His father had died just a month before. He had
cancer, and it was too far gone for anything to be
done about it. Jeremy's grades had suffered as he
missed a lot of classes, trying to help out at home.
His dad had not responded to any treatments, and
eventually it took its toll. Jeremy was sleeping at
home a lot then. One night he woke up to the sounds
of many people rushing down the hall. His father had
had a heart attack and his mother called 911. They
managed to revive him on the way to the hospital, but
he was too weak to recover and he died 5 days later.
Jeremy's mother was a mess, which was probably to be
expected, but Jeremy was a mess, also. They had some
trouble with the insurance, and his mom started
making crazy demands. Jeremy's sister came back into
town, and they all fought over stupid details. Ever
time Jeremy managed to calm down, some other problem
would come up and rattle everyone again. Jeremy
wasn't very good at handling grief, but his mother
couldn't cope at all. It took her months before she
could act normal again.
Jeremy hadn't seen Susan for a week after his
father's death. When they did get together, it wasn't
any fun for either of them. Susan tried to be
supportive, but there really wasn't much she could
do, and Jeremy wasn't of any mind set to be much
company to her. They talked on the phone but didn't
get together for three more weeks.
Jeremy was actually feeling pretty good, considering,
and was looking forward to his date with Susan. Just
dinner and a movie, but it was going to be a real
date, and he was hoping he could make up his neglect
of the past month. That day, though, his mother went
through another nervous breakdown. She had yelled and
screamed and it was all he and his sister could do to
calm her down. Jeremy was frazzled and worn out by
the time he went to pick Susan up.
She could sense something was wrong, and suggested
they just hang around and talk. To Jeremy, it seemed
like another plan down the tubes and he was unhappy
about it.
"Look, Jeremy, I know you're upset, but I'm just
trying to help." His eyes were clouded to her
concern.
"You can't help," he yelled. "Nobody can help, you
stupid bitch!"
Immediately, he regretted it, more than he regretted
anything in his life. He had been upset, but it was
no cause to yell at Susan, who was only trying to be
a comfort.
"Susan, I,I didn't ..." he trailed off, knowing
nothing he could say would ever make up for his
outburst.
Tears welled in her eyes. She shook her head, turned
and walked away. It was the last time he had seen
her. He wanted to run after her, to drop to his knees
and beg her for forgiveness, but he remained frozen,
watching her leave.
Even after a year, the image pained him. Beautiful,
kind, gentle, sexy, funny, wonderful Susan, gone from
his life. At the time, he assumed it was some sort of
justice, his penance for being alive while his father
was dead. He eventually realized it was silly to
think that way, but it had been too late. He felt too
guilty to try and call her and apologize, and he
figured she probably wouldn't want to see him anyway.
After a month or two he tried to date again, going
out with Jennifer for a couple months. His heart just
wasn't in it. He'd dated a few other women a time or
two, but something wasn't right, and there was
usually no second date.
He shook himself physically. One of the songs on an
old John Tesh album came back to him, for some
reason. "You break it, you pay for it. You break my
heart, you're gonna pay for it. Everything you do
comes back on you." The song fit. He was paying for
breaking Susan's heart, and it was coming back on
him.
He wondered what Susan was doing now. Maybe he should
look her up. Maybe she would forgive him after a
year. Maybe she didn't actually hate him. Maybe pigs
would fly. He thought he was over her, but he was
miserable all over again. A shadow crossed his heart.
A shadow fell over him as he sat there. He looked up
and unto blue eyes.
He blinked, unbelieving, before realizing who it was.
"Susan?" he asked, incredulous. His mind told him he
must be dreaming, that he was going to wake up soon.
It was the only explanation.
"Jeremy, I thought it was you, how are-" she started
saying. He jumped up and hugged her tightly.
"Susan, I'm so sorry," he breathed in her ear,
holding onto her as if his life depended on it.
"Please, forgive me."
Susan seemed startled, then hugged him back, and
nodded her head. "I forgive you, Jeremy. Of course, I
do," she said gently. "We, we both made mistakes."
They hugged for a few more minutes. People started at
them as they passed by, but to Jeremy, he and Susan
were the only two people in the world. Finally, he
laughed a little and let go. He was crying again, but
they were tears of joy this time.
"It's been a hell of a day," he told her as he wiped
his tears away, a smile on his face. "So many
coincidences. I saw, well, never mind. Jeez, it's
great to see you! What are you doing here? "
"I don't know, really, I just felt like taking a walk
in the park." She looked at him, as if wondering
whether to confess something. "I was thinking about
things. You, actually. I, I've missed you Jeremy. I
started seeing things that reminded me of you, and,
well, I guess you could say I've had my share of
coincidences today, too."
Jeremy's stood there stunned. A dream, he
thought. Please don't let me ever wake up.
"Sue, do, do you want to have lunch or something? We
could talk about old times, maybe catch up on what
we've been doing this past year."
Her smile could have turned night into day. Jeremy
melted right there. Fate had handed him a second
chance, and he promised himself that he would do
everything he could not to screw up this time.
"Sure, I'd like that," she replied.
Jeremy wanted to ask her to marry him again, right
then, but he thought maybe he should wait until at
least after dinner. He offered her his right arm and
she linked her arm in his. They turned to walk off
down the path.
A young man with a boom box approached them from a
fork in the path. Jeremy didn't notice, but this was
the same man he'd seen on the bench earlier. The boom
box was off and the man was just about to turn it on,
when he noticed Susan casually waving her right hand
at her side, fingers outstretched. Jeremy didn't
notice the gesture. The young man with the boom box
veered away from them, then stopped by a tree and
watched them walk off. After they were gone from his
view, he turned the boom box on. The CD played a
Beatles tune, "Eight Days A Week", and he walked off,
while the Beatles sang "Oh, I need your love, babe,
guess you know it's true. Hope you need my love,
babe, just like I need you..."
