Perfect Ten
(298 words)
by Nick Scipio
Robert sat in his cubicle and quietly ate his sandwich. Before
him, his lunch was neatly arranged, everything in its place. The
harmony of organization appealed to him: columns, numbers, debits,
credits, all _just so_. When a shadow interrupted the symmetry,
he looked up, flustered.
"Hi," the tall blonde chirped. "I'm Dani."
"Uh... hi. I'm... uh..."
"Robert," she said with a smile, oblivious to his agitation.
"Missy in Marketing is having a costume party. Since I'm new at
the company, I didn't know who to go with. She suggested you."
"W-why me?"
"She said I'd like you. So, do you want to go with me?"
He swallowed hard.
"Great! Let's meet after work on Friday. I've got the perfect
costume. You'll love it."
With that, she left, and the distraught accountant stared at his
lunch, _just so_.
-----
By Friday afternoon, Robert was a nervous wreck. Why him? He'd
told them before, why wouldn't they leave him alone?
"Are you ready to go?" Dani asked from the entrance to his
cubicle. She was as cheerful as ever.
Robert nodded glumly, afraid to say no.
"Great! I'll change into my costume and meet you back here in
fifteen minutes."
Robert mechanically donned his rented outfit: midnight blue
wizards' robes, complete with silver stars and a pointed cap.
When Dani entered his cubicle, she dropped her cloak and revealed
her costume--what there was of it. She was dressed as an Amazon
warrior princess. With her high-heel boots, she was more than six
inches taller than he was.
"Why me?" he asked, even though he already knew the answer.
"The other women in Marketing told me all about you," she said
with a sultry look. "They said you're a perfect _ten_."
"Oh, God. Not again."
"Relax," she cooed. "I don't bite."
