Her mom called out the window as Nancy walked up to the door. Nancy waved without looking back. Ding dong. A muffled emotive shout, followed by the pitter patter of running feet on hardwood floors. The door flew open. There, standing with a smile that seemed to be fighting a close battle with a frown and red puffy eyes, was Terry. There were tears still rolling down her face. She looked up at Nancy, arms raised for a hug. There was one word to describe her current emotional state: need. Nancy picked up Terry, who was quite small, even for her age. "It's ok, it's alright." Nancy shifted Terry up higher and let Terry wrap her arms around her neck, her head resting on Nancy's shoulder. "There, does that feel better?" Terry nodded. "Why was my little Terry Bear crying?" Nancy inquired maternally. Terry shook her head and bit back a sob. "Ok, ok, shush, it's ok, I'm here now" Nancy carried her over to the couch and laid down. Terry snuggled in close to her, crying very softly. Nancy looked around at her immaculate house. Terry's parents were out, as usual. She used to babysit for Terry and had come to the conclusion that her affectionate behavior was the result her parents almost literally never being around. They had never really liked Nancy much, but she was convenient and worked for free. Their dislike stemmed from the numerous occasions when they would arrive at home to find them in an embrace much like the one they were in right now. They were both big name lawyers and came from upper class backgrounds, so they were constantly on the look out for the improper, lest it come out into the open and cause them embarrassment. Even still, they mostly kept their objections to passive aggressive comments. That is, until they found Nancy and Terry in bed together. It had happened about four months ago. Terry's parents, at a conference at the time, called the house, explaining their flight had been delayed. Terry was ecstatic; her first sleepover with Nancy. There was no way in hell they were going to sleep in different beds. In Terry's own words, "Now I can REALLY be your Terry Bear!" It seemed harmless enough. Nancy knew Terry's parents wouldn't be happy about it, but, "Come on, were just friends. Can't two female friends sleep in the same bed?". Unfortunately, Terry's parents didn't share these sentiments, and Nancy was asked to leave. Worse still, this event convinced Terry's parents that she couldn't be trusted with other people when they were out; which, given Terry's emotional needs, was probably the cruelest punishment her parents could have come up with. Of course, it wasn't difficult to just bring friends over without their permission, but, being in the the fifth grade, it was hard to clear dates with other kids when they had to avoid parent to parent contact. Thus, the rule served its purpose and a tiny, affective little girl was trapped in a monstrously large, monstrously elegant, and monstrously empty house. Nancy immediately felt guilty, thinking of how rarely she came over now. It must have been terrible for Terry, being alone for so long. Terry had stopped crying now. She took long, deep breaths, her face buried in Nancy's shirt. Nancy casually played with Terry's hair, running her fingers through it. "Do you want to talk about it?" Nancy questioned. "No..." Terry mumbled dejectedly. "That's alright, we don't have to talk about it" Nancy reassured. Nancy leaned in and put her mouth very close to Terry's ear and whispered softly "You know you're my little Terry Bear, don't you?" Terry giggled, "yeEsss...". Nancy gave her two pecks on the cheek and then laid back again, sighing comfortably. After a few moments, Terry lifted her self up onto her knees, facing Nancy. Nancy looked at Terry, amused. "What are you doing?" Terry got closer and gave her a kiss on the cheek. Nancy laughed. "You're crazy, you know that?" Nancy said while putting her arms around Terry and pulling her in for a kiss of her own. Terry turned into the kiss, their lips grazing briefly. Nancy pushed her away gently and gave her an understanding look. "Terry... you just broke up, it's natural for you to have certain feelings, desires..." Terry cut her off, "No, no it's not like that... I just... I don't know how to explain it, but it's not really... uh... like a 'boyfriend' kiss. It's..." Terry closed her eyes and turned away, bright red. Nancy grinned in spite of herself, charmed by Terry's embarrassment. Terry regained her composure and continued, "But you understand, right? I just want to have something... special with someone... well, not just 'someone'; I mean, I'd like to... y'know, I'd like to share it with... with you. It's not like I want to... you know..." Nancy was overwhelmed by this little girl's capacity for intimacy, and heartbroken at how empty it was. "I get it, Terry, I do. But I just don't feel comfortable... right now... kissing you and all, I'm just not..." Nancy trailed off, she didn't know what to say. Terry shook off Nancy's guilt and playfully fell face-first back into Nancy's chest. After a while of just laying there together, Nancy felt a little hand making its way up her side, she giggled. Terry giggled too. The hand kept going higher and higher until finally it reached its destination; Nancy's armpit. All at once, the little fingers started squirming around. Nancy squealed and grabbed Terry's arms playfully. "Were you tickling me? Was my little Terry Bear tickling ME?!". "YeEsss" Terry replied wickedly. Nancy held Terry down and started tickling her. Terry finally wiggled out of her grasp and fell onto the floor, trying to escape while laughing uncontrollably. Nancy jumped down after her and grabbed hold of her ankle, pulling her back. Terry changed her strategy and instead jumped on top of Nancy, knocking her onto her back. Nancy rolled over, reversing their positions, and then pinned Terry down, propping herself up on Terry's wrists, her legs between Terry's. They were both laughing hysterically. They're laughter died down. Nancy continued to hold Terry down. They stared at each other, giggling infrequently and breathing heavily. Terry cheekily cocked an eyebrow at Nancy, which was supposed to be funny but instead only served to heighten the tension. Nancy smiled at Terry and had a feeling of déjà vu. The other side of this mental rift was unmysterious to her; she could see it clearly in her minds eye. It was two years ago and she was looking down at a sobbing child, trying futilely to maintain control in a moment composed of either inescapable cosmic order, or pure indiscriminate chaos. Nancy eased her hips down while keeping her arms at full length. Their bodies touched. Butterflies. Terry looked up at her, need in her eyes again. Bending her arms, Nancy lowered herself in very close, their chests touching slightly. Terry opened her mouth slightly and closed her eyes. Nancy couldn't believe what she was seeing, couldn't believe what she was doing, but she gave in; turning her head slightly to the side lowering herself the rest of the way, kissing Terry on the lips. This was Nancy's first kiss. It was such a strange sensation when they're lips touched. Given the circumstances, it should have felt dirty, but neither of them felt like that at all. Nancy realized that Terry was right, this wasn't really all that sexual, Nancy loved Terry, she felt responsible for her; she wanted to care for and nurture her. Terry needed someone to be intimate with her. It would be a lie to say they didn't receive sexual pleasure from this act, but it was undeniably secondary to the feelings of love they felt for each other. Finally, after what seemed like an eternity in paradise, Nancy broke away. Terry opened her eyes and looked up with the most spaced-out look Nancy had ever seen. "Have a good dream?" Nancy joked. "Yes, very" Terry responded. "Actually," Terry said quite timidly, betraying her intentions, "I do feel a little tired, maybe we could... go upstairs and have a nap?" Nancy let go of Terry and rolled over into a sitting position, looking Terry in the eye. Moments passed. Finally she looked away. "Yeah, " Nancy conceded, "A nap sounds good". "What did I just agree to?" She thought. "C'mon my little Terry Bear" Nancy said, offering her hand. Terry eagerly took it, and together, they ascended the stairs.
