I am having fun, thank you for inviting me. - Madison said. -Good, Rachel is not near done. Can we wait for her out there? - Jordan said, pointing to a bench right outside the front of the store. -Sure, you have had your fill of shopping? - Madison said and Jordan nodded. They walked out and sat on the bench. Madison saw Rachel walking around with a lot of clothes on her arm. That did look like it would take a while. She saw Frank and Josie wrestling again and she smiled. She was having fun. She looked at Jordan and she was looking at her. -So, tell me about Jordan. - Madison said. -What do you want to know? - Jordan said. -Well, you are a senior. Are you going to college? - Madison said. -Yeah, I have a track scholarship to State. Well, that is if they haven -(TM)t watched me get beat by a freshman. - Jordan said and Madison frowned. -I am sorry, I didn -(TM)t mean to do that. - Madison said and Jordan laughed. -Teasing, it is a guaranteed scholarship, I already signed. My times have been good, yours have just been a little better. - Jordan said and Madison took a deep breath. -Funny. So, tell me about your parents. - Madison said. -My dad is an accountant and my mom passed away two years ago. - Jordan said. -Oh, I am so sorry. I am messing this all up. - Madison said and looked at Jordan. -Relax, kid. I am fine. I have been through all the crying and grief. I still miss her terribly, but I can smile now when I think of her. She was a runner too. - Jordan said. -Really, that is cool that you could do something she did. - Madison said. -Yeah, she loved it and she was as crazy as your lady. - Jordan said and Madison smiled. -My crazy lady will cheer for you too. - Madison said and Jordan looked at this strange little girl. She didn -(TM)t know what she was expecting but this was definitely not it. This girl had a way of making her feel good. She had not talked about her mom with anyone for a while. -You know that cloth I wear around my leg? - Jordan said and Madison nodded, remembering the blue cloth she followed. -That was her headband, she wore it every time she ran. I can -(TM)t bring myself to wear it around my head, but I feel good when I carry it across the finish line, like she is still with me. - Jordan said and Madison felt her eyes tearing up. She looked around for something to wipe her eyes. She felt a tear run down her cheek. Jordan reached over and wiped the tear off her cheek. -Don -(TM)t cry, she has had plenty of tears shed for her. - Jordan said, wiping more tears. -Sorry. - Madison said, her voice cracking. -Jordan, what did you do? - Josie said and walked up. She knelt and wiped Madison -(TM)s eyes and cheeks with a handkerchief. -We were talking about my mom. - Jordan said. -Oh. - Josie said and hugged Madison. -It -(TM)s ok sweetie, we have all been crying about her for two years. Even Frank. - Josie said and looked at Madison. Madison laughed a little and wiped her eyes. She felt a little stupid crying like a wierdo about a woman she didn -(TM)t even know. Josie sat next to her and put her arm around her, pushing her closer to Jordan. -Ok, let -(TM)s do something fun now. How about ice cream? - Josie said. -I love ice cream. - Madison said softly. -Jordan, look at that, something you two truly have in common. Jordan loves ice cream as well. - Josie said. Madison looked at Jordan and smiled. She saw her look down at her and smile back. -Is Rachel done yet? - Jordan said. -Yeah, she is in line. I think she bought a closet full. - Josie said. -How is that different from every time we come here. - Jordan said and Josie laughed. -Madison, what did you get? - Josie said, looking at her bag. -A white skirt and the yellow one you saw. - Madison said. -I loved that yellow one on you. - Josie said. They all looked up to see Rachel walking out of the store with Tommy following her, carrying three bags. Josie stood up and took Madison -(TM)s hand. -It is ice cream time. - Josie said and started to walk, pulling Madison along with her. Everyone followed. -Thank you for the handkerchief. - Madison said. -No problem, sweetie. Frank has been carrying one around for the last two years. We have all used it at one time or another. - Josie said. -What happened? - Madison said. -Heart attack. Jordan got home from school and found her. She was a hot mess for quite a while. It was the running that brought her back. - Josie said. -That is so sad. - Madison said. -Yes, it is, but we have come to terms with it. She was a great lady and we have made a pact to laugh and smile when we talk about her now. - Josie said. -That sounds like a much better plan. - Madison said. -Yes, it definitely is. - Josie said. They walked up to the ice cream stand and the boy behind the counter looked scared when 6 people walked up all at once. Madison laughed at his face as he scrambled. They all got ice cream and sat on the short wall around the fountain. Josie sat on one side of Madison and Jordan sat on the other. Madison looked at Jordan and noticed she had the same ice cream, chocolate on a waffle cone. She smiled at her. -Sorry about that. - Madison said. -Don -(TM)t worry, it is hard when people find out about her for the first time. - Jordan said. -Yeah, it is. - Madison said. They talked about school and track while they finished their ice cream. -Guys, I have to go. I haven -(TM)t finished my paper for English tomorrow. - Rachel said and stood, straightening her skirt. -Rachel, that paper was assigned 4 weeks ago, how are you not finished? - Josie said. -Jo, I have been busy. - Rachel said and smiled. Josie laughed and hugged her and Tommy. Rachel stepped in front of Madison. -It was nice meeting you sweetie. You are lovely and you let us know if this one gives you any trouble. - Rachel said and motioned to Jordan. -Thank you, it was nice meeting you too. - Madison said and shook the girl -(TM)s hand. Rachel and Tommy walked away, Rachel chattering and Tommy struggling to carry the three bags. Josie chuckled as she watched them. -Sometimes I feel sorry for Tommy, Rachel is the sweetest and prettiest girl I know but she is the poster child for high maintenance. - Josie said and Jordan laughed. -Josie, we should go too. I sort of have to finish that paper as well. - Frank said softly. -Are you freaking kidding me? I know you haven -(TM)t been busy; you have spent too much time on your game system. Frank, you are killing me. - Josie said and he hung his head. -Madison, it was nice meeting you. - Josie stood and held out her hand. Madison stood up and hugged the girl. -Thank you so much for your help today. - Madison said and Josie looked at Jordan as she put her arms around the young girl. -Jordan, you hurt this girl and I will personally mess you up. - Josie said. -I got it; she is the golden child. - Jordan said and Josie laughed. Madison broke the hug and sat back on the wall. Josie hugged Jordan and then grabbed Frank -(TM)s hand. She pulled him and he followed. They heard her telling him he needed an academic babysitter and they both laughed. -You have nice friends. - Madison said. -Yeah, they will do. They really like you. - Jordan said. -Well, what -(TM)s not to like? - Madison said and smiled. -Well, your modesty could use some work. - Jordan said and looked at her. Madison laughed. Madison looked at her phone and looked at Jordan. -You have homework to finish as well? - Jordan said. -No, I just haven -(TM)t seen my daddy too much this weekend and we have a movie date tonight. - Madison said. -That -(TM)s cool, you don -(TM)t want to be late for that. - Jordan said and stood. They walked through the mall to the parking lot. It was getting a little dark and they made it to the car. Jordan started the car and pulled out of the parking lot. -I had fun today. It was nice seeing you outside of a track meet. - Madison said. -Yeah, you are pretty cool, and I guess I have to be nice to you or get my ass kicked. - Jordan said. -I am hoping you would be nice to me without fear of bodily harm. - Madison said and smiled. -I guess I can do that. Do you want to hang out again? - Jordan said. -Sure. - Madison said. -How about Tuesday? I have early track practice; I can pick you up at your house. - Jordan said. -That will work. - Madison said as they pulled up into her driveway. She got out of the car and Jordan walked with her to the porch. Madison looked at Jordan and decided she liked having a new friend. She felt excited about Tuesday and finding out more about this girl. She hugged Jordan, her head under Jordan -(TM)s chin. She felt Jordan -(TM)s arms wrap around her and they were strong. It felt nice. She held the hug for a little while and pulled back. -Thank you again for bringing me, it was a lot of fun. - Madison said. -Yes, it was, have a good night, kid. - Jordan said and rubbed her head. Madison watched her walk to her car. She loved meeting new people and they all seemed really nice. She waved at Jordan as she pulled away. Madison walked into the house and her daddy was sitting in his chair watching a game. She sat on his lap and leaned against him. -Hey sweetie, did you have fun? - Henry said, wrapping his arms around his little girl. -Yes, daddy, I met four of her friends from her school. They were all very nice. I bought two new skirts. - Madison said. -Ah, meeting new people and shopping, sounds like a perfect day. - Henry said. -Yes, I guess it was. - She said. -You ready for popcorn and a movie? - Henry said. -Can we do pizza and a movie? - Madison said and Henry laughed. -Certainly, you go get in your jammies and I will order the pizza. - Henry said and she jumped off his lap and scurried up the stairs. He ordered her favorite and got up to make them some drinks. He was still in the kitchen when she came bouncing in. She was wearing one of his t-shirts. It went down to the middle of her thighs, and it did not hide her breasts. He noticed her nipples were poking out a little, when did that happen? He held out her drink and they snuggled up on the couch. She destroyed the pizza and then fell asleep in his lap on the couch. She was soft and warm, and he loved having her in his arms. She was growing up, but she was still his little girl. He kissed the top of her head and hugged her as he finished watching the movie. He turned off the TV when it was over and jostled her to wake her. -Daddy, I am sorry I fell asleep. - Madison said, sitting up and rubbing her eyes. -It -(TM)s ok pumpkin, you were tired. It was still nice, and the movie ended the same way as last time. - Henry said and she laughed. -It was nice, you make a good pillow. - She said and stood up. -I live to serve. - He said and she giggled. She kissed him on the cheek and started to walk up the stairs. -Good night, daddy. - Madison said. -Good night, sweetheart. - Henry said and watched a cute pair of pink panties go up the stairs. Madison snuggled into her bed and looked at her phone. She had a text message. -Really had fun today, looking forward to Tuesday. - Jordan texted. -Me too, good night. - Madison texted back. Her phone dinged a few seconds later. -Good night. - Jordan texted. Madison held her phone and felt her eyes getting heavy immediately. She was very tired. She thought about Jordan and that blue cloth. It made so much more sense now. She felt sad about Jordan -(TM)s mom, and it made her think about her mom. She felt her heart hurt a little. She needed Katie. She punched a text message into her phone. -I love you. I miss my mom. - Madison texted to Katie. She waited and hoped for a response. Nothing happened for a couple of minutes, and she felt sleep coming on. A ding broke her out of her sleep trance. -I love you too sweetheart. Sending you hugs. Sleep well. - Katie texted back with an image of a girl with her arms out for a hug. Madison smiled and thought of Katie as sleep rolled over her.
