Andrew Roller Presents
PURPOSE SHALL BE THE FIRMER
_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/
The scintillating lights winked out, one by
One. Filaments expired, radiance
Vanished, shadows coupled with the night. Sirens
Broke the lush summer air, drowned a cricket
Symphony, screamed at the dispassionate stars.
The towering building shuddered as the first
Shells fell. Plate glass windows shattered in their
Frames, wood tasted the lust of fire, pink
Bricks and whitewashed masonry were defiled
By hot ash. The structure's inhabitants
Scurried between trembling walls. Children clung
Madly to their mothers, eyes wide with fright.
Atop the edifice helicopters
Lifted from the grey concrete and sliced toward
The onrushing enemy. Their metal
Talons raked the adversary legions,
Tore at endless mulatto lines. Indigo
Cannon snorted in reply, broke the stiff
Limbed hummingbirds, dashed them to the earth. Swift
Battalions overtook a low ridge near
The erection; remorselessly butchered
Its staunch but few defenders. The strength of
The structure's constabulary looked meager
Against the swollen ranks. But the building
Did not plead for clemency. Wracked decades
Past by nuclear fires, pillaged in
Earlier years by marauding bands, then
Slumbering until this fateful night; so
Sure of its security, it knew not
Of this fell foe. Deep in the heart of the
Pile a radio crackled with the terms:
Unconditional surrender. Tense men
Vowed to fight till their last breath. Mounted guns
Upon the ridge ravaged the edifice.
The staunch citizens never acquiesced.
***
Storm clouds cloaked the sun at dawn. Nature, loath
To be outdone by Adam's progeny,
Prepared to lash the celebrating force
Upon the ridge. Beyond, the heaps of stone
And rock lay silent as the first drops fell.

ALL LIFE NEEDS LIFE TO LIVE
_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/
Wherever life has grown there has always
Come a day when it was extirpated
From its verdant slumber and consumed. Fish,
Bird, man, or beast; all life needs life to live.
***
The great ships sliced between the stars. Their honed
Sensors picked out a fertile planet. They
Swooped in low over an emerald sea.
Each craft lowered three capacious sieves; scooped
Up seaweed, cod, and salmon. They rushed toward
The shore. Along the beach tawny creatures
Stared. They began to flee. The fleet closed in.
***
One by one the reapers rose, disappeared
Into the clouds. Through the afternoon they
Had hovered over ivory cities,
Until they had sucked them dry. Now only
A lone pigeon remained, picking among
The ruins. Voluminous abdomens full,
The rapacious engines glided away.
***
Wherever life has grown there has always
Come a day when it was extirpated
From its verdant slumber and consumed. Fish,
Bird, man, or beast; all life needs life to live.
***
The vessel murmured among the stars. Its
Masters were feasting. They were delighted
With the last world the leviathan had
Plucked from the heavens. The hulk discharged the
Rocky core. It dozed in the detritus
Of the broken sphere. Suddenly it glimpsed
A cruising argosy. Each galleon brimmed
With the stuff of harvested worlds. Each was
A tasty treat. The steel monster gurgled.
Jaws open, it lunged toward the combines.
