Andrew Roller Presents
GIRL PATROL
Chapter Eight
Faith lay on her back, floating. She let her mind grope back through
the centuries, through the millennia, farther and farther until she came to
the time the little girls had spoken of. Five billion years ago, Columbus,
Ohio. Such a strange place. Everything was living. Humans dominated.
Yes, she could see them. The mist was thick but she could make them out,
going about their business with no thought of the undead in their midst.
There had been few undead in those days.
And then the sun struck her. It was yellow. How odd. She let
herself rise, in her mindÕs eye, toward that sun. It was a healthy glow,
she realized. SheÕd never really considered the matter before but suddenly
it hit her. As if speaking to her the bright yellow sun said, ÒIÕm young and
healthy. Look at me!Ó
Faith nearly fell out of the air. When she managed to get her feet
down she rushed to the door of her hut. She lived modestly, despite her
power. She believed in modest living; not like her younger and more
beautiful sister. She had tasted the kiss, she was one of them now, out
west, out where the most dangerous vampires lived.
The sun glowed seemingly large and bulbous. Faith could not look at
it directly but she let its light fall on her face, standing in the door to her
hut.
ÒAt least my sister canÕt do this!Ó Faith cried to herself. She let the
sunlight bathe her. It was a good revenge. And then suddenly she
remembered someone sheÕd seen on her daily mind-journeys back into the
past, her journeys which had been helped so much by the information the
strange little girls had given her.
It was her sister! FaithÕs eyes popped open and for a moment she
was exposed to the sun. She turned away, her eyes reverberating with sun
blindness. An image of the bloated red orb stayed in her eyes even after
sheÕd turned back into her dimly-lit hut. But Faith wasnÕt worrying about
her eyes. She leapt back up into the air, stretched out on her back. She
spread her arms to balance herself. And then she let her mind dip into the
ages past, race back again into the depths of time.
It was Esmelda! She was walking with her husband in broad daylight.
They were straight, erect, fashionably dressed in the clothing of the time.
She let her mind probe deeper. She could almost hear them talking.
ÒDamn that fucker. Who would have imagined heÕd have fooled with
my machine?Ó Vlad said to Esmelda.
ÒHe must have been more inquisitive than you gave him credit for,Ó
Esmelda answered.
ÒIf only I hadnÕt wrecked the damn thing when we first landed,Ó Vlad
said. ÒThen I wouldnÕt have had to put the thing back together piece by
piece.Ó
ÒIt would be like you to bring the thing in too high,Ó Esmelda said.
She looked up at the sky, at the yellow sun. ÒWhat matters is that weÕre
here. The sun is young, look at it!Ó
ÒI canÕt look at it. IÕm still getting used to being in it!Ó Vlad said.
Esmelda held out her hands to the sun as they crossed a park, going
between stores. They were big department stores. Vlad was carrying
packages.
ÒWe have plenty of money, we have the run of the place. And we have
the drug you developed to let us live in the light. We donÕt need anything
else, honey,Ó Esmelda said to her husband. She hugged him, and he almost
dropped one of the packages. TheyÕd had to leave Columbus, Ohio, of
course. You couldnÕt almost kill a cop and then steal his car and hang
around the area, especially with your ex-landlord suspected in a
kidnapping case, of three children. But theyÕd been gone before dawn,
hitching their way onto a truck at first, then draining the driver and
driving the truck, finally stealing a car. When they got enough money from
several successive muggings, they rented an apartment in Phoenix. And
here they were! Surviving under the sun, loaded with cash. Each day
increased their holdings; their stolen car now had a license taken from a
junkyard, their apartment proved to be in the same building as that of a
drug dealer. At first buyers, they were soon to be dealers, if Vlad played
his cards right. And when had Vlad not played his cards right, he thought
to himself. He was supposed to die, five billion years in the future.
Instead he was here, and although heÕd lost the means of returning to
where heÕd came from, or slipping away to another time, he was still a
vampire, and a day-dwelling vampire at that, with his special drugs. Vlad
felt like letting the wind take him and wafting up into the air. If he
climbed to a high place and jumped he could fly. Perhaps he would fly,
after the sun had set, soaring in the darkness above the hard-sleeping
humans.
ÒI suppose youÕre right,Ó Vlad said to Esmelda. ÒWe should look on
the bright side.Ó He chuckled at that. It was not in the nature of a
vampire to say such a thing but here he was, saying it, out in the open air
under the bright healthy sun.
Faith scowled. So her sister had escaped! Into a world that knew
almost nothing of vampires, where every human was as innocent as those
little girls that had visited her. Faith let herself settle back down onto
the wooden floor of her hut. She opened her eyes. The sun-images were
dimming. In the semi-darkness of her hut she went to the lone gun sheÕd
kept for herself. It was a plasma rifle in the 40 watt range. She picked it
up and handled it. Rapid laser fire could spit from it so fast it would take
twenty vampire wraiths, or more, before she would begin to feel
overwhelmed. A good werewolf pack could be cut down easily, provided
the shooter aimed well. And Faith had developed a special herbal powder
just for that; her plasma rifle had been well sprinkled with it. The
powder had imbued itself into the metal of the gun, turning the metal a
vaguely blue color. She had used the same herbal powder on her other
guns, the ones sheÕd since given to the little girls. And it was no doubt a
lucky thing for those little ones; theyÕd need all the help they could get,
being from another time, knowing nothing of this world. SheÕd wondered if
she should keep them with her, in their strange little costumes, with their
much older friend. But they were dauntingly beautiful, like her sister
Esmelda. She was willing to give them guns for information; but she felt
envy toward them too. She was only human, after all. So sheÕd let them
go, let them see for themselves what sort of world theyÕd let themselves
in for. In her mental travels sheÕd watched them a little, now and then.
They seemed to be holding their own against the vampire wraiths and the
occasional werewolf. Good. Nothing like a few visitors to clean out the
neighborhood.
And then it hit her. The machine! Had they not said that they came
to this place in a Òmagical closetÓ? TheyÕd lost track of where theyÕd left
it by the time they reached her, but perhaps she could find it? Faith
cursed herself. She spent too much time lying in her little hut probing the
past. It was quite interesting but the present was, after all, where her
living body was. Could it be that the girlsÕ Òmagical closetÓ had been the
very thing Vlad had complained of, in her vision? The thing heÕd told her
sister that heÕd lost? It sounded crazy but maybe it was true. But then
heÕd said heÕd wrecked it, hadnÕt he? Yes she remembered that. HeÕd
wrecked it and... been rebuilding it piece by piece!
Faith grabbed her gun and headed for the door. She had no idea where
the little girlsÕ Òmagical closetÓ was but it had to be out there
somewhere. Perhaps it was even still in working order, if the werewolves
hadnÕt found it and smashed it. They were such stupid creatures. They
were getting smarter but they still didnÕt know how to fit a finger into a
gunÕs trigger and pull. Faith opened the door to her hut.
And that was when the vampires hit her. There were more than
twenty of them, and they were beyond angry. Over a dozen of their younger
members had been killed recently, by three little well-armed human girls.
And now here was a human to pay the bill for it. Faith saw she was
surrounded. She pulled back toward the door to her hut but it was already
blocked; half a dozen wraith vampires hovered in the open doorway. How
could they be out in the light, in broad daylight? Faith didnÕt have time to
figure it out. She began firing. The vampires closed in.
ÒI am Faith! The Medium!Ó Faith cried. It should have been enough to
scare them off; she was the most powerful human that she knew of in the
east, but it was such a surprise! They mauled her with hands that grew
substantial in the red-tinged air. She blasted their wind-drifting bodies,
cut down a good ten of them from the sky, leaving them squirming on the
ground. But they pinned her with new spells she didnÕt know. Soon she
was falling down to the dirt to join those sheÕd vanquished. Though
wounded, they rolled upon her, growing more substantial in their agony and
anger, tearing at her flesh. And then two of them managed to wrench the
gun from her and turn it on her. The plasma rifle, in the 40 watt range,
was not something one wanted to get in front of, especially at point blank
range. Particularly if you werenÕt a wind-blown vampire but solid flesh.
The most powerful human on the east coast was blown apart in a
matter of seconds. And as she lay dying, Faith could think only of her
sister, alive in the bright healthy sun as she met her end under a blood red
sky.
