                                            Chapter Forty-One

         The landscape was desolate.  Smoke rose from crater holes, trees 
were shattered as if a storm had come through, or lay uprooted and dying.
         ÒIt looks terrible here!Ó Kim cried, looking around.
         ÒIt looks sort of like strange land,Ó Becky said.
         ÒItÕs World War Two,Ó Brian declared.  A sound went off the the 
distance.  The four cringed.  Woofie barked, a note of fear in his voice.
         ÒLetÕs go.  This is a job for Girl Patrol!Ó Jan, who was never one to 
shrink from a little death and destruction, cried.  She flew up into the air, 
carrying her Seismic Shotgun.  Woofie leapt up next, then Becky, with her 
Magnum, then Kim with her lighter shotgun and finally, a little awkwardly 
because he almost forgot to keep a hand on his underpants, Brian 
Galbladder.
         They went racing off across the sky, the dog in the lead, Brian 
following, and then only the machine remained, waiting with an open door 
to take them home.
