                                           Chapter Thirty-Six

         Jan was practising her swoops.  They had proven quite handy.  She 
had jumped and flown, all in a single motion, and saved her boyfriendÕs 
life.  And her own too, probably, given what a big gun he had.  She looked at 
the knife in her hand.  The blood stain was no longer there but it pleased 
her to look at it, and she ran her tongue impulsively along it, savoring the 
sharpness of it.  One mistake and sheÕd slice her tongue off.  It was 
thrilling.
         A tremble suddenly shook Jan.  She felt awkward.  She wondered why 
she liked teasing herself by licking her knife.  She looked around her.  It 
was a nice place, this Darkness City, but it was a little boring, especially 
in the daytime.  Vlad had given her some of his special medicine to allow 
her to play out in the sunshine.  Not that she really liked the sun anymore, 
but she didnÕt feel like sleeping and so here she was, in the middle of a 
street that was mostly deserted, all the windows either boarded up or 
with their shades drawn.
         A gust of wind blew.  Jan felt it in her hair and she was seized with 
happiness.  It was the first breeze all day.  A tumbleweed came rolling 
down the street.  She watched it.  The tangled ball rolled through the 
shadows cast by the buildings.  They were mostly of wood, with gaudy 
lights strung up to make the evenings merry.  Night was when this place 
came alive. Then the bars opened, the houses of prostitution went into 
business, and the gambling began.  Cowboys would have been delighted 
here, if they didnÕt mind donating a little blood.
         Best of all were the shootouts.  With ordinary bullet-firing guns, 
vampires could blast away at each other and blow off body parts without 
dying.  It was quite a spectacle.  It usually happened several times a night.  
Then there were the illegal shootouts, using stronger weaponry that could 
kill a vampire.  Those happened too, though not as often.  A shootout with 
high caliber guns could fuel a revolt.
         An odd feeling passed over Jan.  This certainly was a wild place.  She 
wondered what her mom and dad would say about her being here.  Then she 
remembered that she was a vampire and could never go back.  How would 
she fit in with other kids, always wanting to drink their blood?  A tear 
appeared in her eye.  She was about to go back to the tower and talk to 
Vlad about it when she saw three people coming down the street.  She 
started; they hadnÕt been there a moment before.  Had they?  There was an 
odd-looking metal box sitting down the street, beyond where they were 
walking, and suddenly Jan cried,
         ÒThe magical closet!Ó  The heads of the figures jerked up.  She was 
standing in an old dead tree, partly obscured by its tangle of branches, and 
suddenly she swooped down to earth.
         ÒJan!Ó
         ÒJan!Ó
         Two little voices cried, followed by another, all calling her name 
now, and Jan flew up into the air.  Two of the figures walking toward her 
flew up too, and then they flew right at her!  Jan was shocked.  She tried it 
to and found she could also do it.
         ÒI can fly!Ó Jan cried.  She was no longer just floating, or even 
swooping!  She was flying straight ahead, as if sheÕd shot herself out of a 
slingshot.  She nearly headbumped Becky as the little girl flew up to her.
