Andrew Roller Presents
JUPITER RISING
Chapter Fourteen
ÒWhy stand there going moo,
When you can hire a blue?
Blue cab! Blue cab!
L.A.Õs finest Blue cab!Ó
About the only thing more irritating than listening to the Blue cab
commercial was having to drive one, Jackson Stallings muttered to
himself. He reached over and switched off the radio. The missing girl had
been found anyway, even if her kidnapper hadnÕt. The news had become
repetitive; police were searching down near the beach, JacksonÕs area, and
at some point they were going to have to clear out or he was going to have
to start working, cops or no cops. He couldnÕt spend all morning starving.
Jackson pulled his harmonica out of his leather coat pocket. It was his
only consolation on slow mornings like this, when lack of business or
other problems prevented him from picking up rides. He had just begun
playing a tune when someone waved to him from the other side of the
street. Idly he looked over at the man. Some homeless guy was waving to
him with a cane. Jackson tried ignoring the man. The last thing he needed
was to be bothered with someone with no money; it was worse than no
business at all.
As Jackson quietly pulsed through the notes of the Rolling StonesÕ
Honkey Tonk Woman, he let his vision slide to one side again. The
homeless bum was still trying to get his attention. But now there was a
second man standing beside him. Jackson sighed and stuffed his
harmonica back into his coat. He could ignore one ride, but two was too
tempting. The second guy looked as ragged as the first but perhaps the
two of them had a dollar or two between them; even a short ride to the
homeless shelter might be worth the trouble on this morning.
Jackson started his cab. He swung around to the other side of the
street. He leaned over and rolled his side window, which was already
partway down, all the way to the level of the door sill.
ÒYou two need a ride?Ó
ÒYes,Ó the older man with the cane said with surprising self-
assurance. Not the usual drugged out hopeless voice Jackson was used to
in such people. His spirits perked up. Perhaps these two were worth the
trouble of pulling around for, after all. The younger man opened the cabÕs
back door for the older man and with a bit of weariness the older man
eased himself into the back seat. Then the younger man got in, in front.
Grandly he reached across to Jackson, extending his hand to him.
ÒHi, weÕd like to go to UC Mercy,Ó the younger man said to Jackson.
Without even thinking about it, Jackson took the younger manÕs hand, or,
rather, let his own hand be sought and taken. Jackson felt a sudden ripple
shoot through his body. He blinked.
ÒUC Mercy?Ó Jackson asked, except his name wasnÕt Jackson, he
realized. When had it ever been Jackson? It was Pan, of course.
