                                               Chapter Eleven

         ÒWhoa, dude, that was some amazing shit,Ó the surfer mumbled to 
himself as he walked along the beach.  Behind him, beyond a seaward rim 
of buildings, the city bus sat.  His surfboard was still on it, he realized, as 
he stumbled along, but he felt no need to go back for it.  He headed toward 
the waves.  They were coming in nicely.  It would be a great day for 
surfing or, in the case of a man without his board, for body surfing.  The 
surfer reached up and brushed back his lank blonde hair.  Suddenly 
something odd struck his vision.  He looked at his hand, first his right and 
then his left.  They had turned a vague shade of green.  ÒShit, I got to quit 
taking so many drugs,Ó the surfer told himself.  He passed a girl in a bikini 
and she gave him an odd look.  Normally he would have stopped and tried to 
chat with this early-morning swimmer, this lover of the ocean like 
himself, but he felt a deeper attraction for the incoming waves.  
         He stumbled into the water.  Ankle-deep, then knee-deep, then balls-
deep, feeling the rush of ocean water against his loins.  Then the surfer 
was completely in the waves, loving the ocean as heÕd seemingly never 
loved it before.  He felt the sky above him and the water in his hands and 
against the soles of his feet.  A wave gently curled over his head and he 
felt it splash his face.  It surged into his mouth and on down his throat 
into his lungs.
         As the girl on the beach watched, he went under.  She waited for him 
to come up but he did not.  To her growing horror, she realized that he 
would not come up.  Then, when she was certain there was no hope for him, 
she turned and went running for a lifeguard.
