Chapter 8

Jake and Amy eased out of the house around midnight and headed towards the pits, little did they know that Kate had seen them and was following. Kate assumed that the two were going to have sex and she wanted to be included. She followed them quietly and could not figure out why they were going the way they were headed, towards the pits. As Jake and Amy walked, they contacted AL to let him know that they were on their way. As soon as AL responded, they were told that they could just wait there and the shuttle would be there in about 1 minute. Sure enough, about 90 seconds later, there appeared a doorway opening about 50 yards away. It sure looked strange to see a "door" just open with light coming from inside and no visible structure around it. "Welcome aboard Captain, Chief, and this must be Kate ," AL's voice intoned. "Please be seated, we will depart in 30 seconds. It will take about 30 of your minutes for us to clear the atmosphere, then about 30 minutes to reach the base. Everything is on 'auto pilot,' but you are welcome to come to the cockpit and observe once we clear the atmosphere. There is water and a light snack available if you would like," AL continued.

"Hold on, AL; we might need to check something out on the other side of town. We have found out that there may be an amount of Silicon nodules in another pit," Amy said.

"Silicon nodules! That would be even better than the ore you brought last time. The nodules should be almost pure silicon with few contaminates. That would make processing quicker and the outcome would be more powerful solar panels," AL added.

"Also, I was wondering if we could make use of pitchblende at the base?" Jake interjected.

"Searching .... I find no record of the substance 'pitchblende' in my database; what is that?" AL asked.

"Pitchblende is a precursor to Uranium," Jake replied.

"You know what they make atom bombs out of," Kate suddenly added.

"I had not even considered atomic power sources; that would be of great help and would mean a very big increase in power. How did you come to know about this?" AL intoned.

"The guy we scanned, John, mentioned it where we were talking earlier. I thought you would have known about it already. But, I guess I was wrong to assume that," Jake added.

"AL, take us to the other pits and let's see about the silicon nodules; maybe we can get some of them tonight for you to analyze," Amy ordered.

"En route, Captain. Please be seated for take off," AL replied.

After everyone was seated, the shuttle rose up and went to the other pits. Upon arrival, only about 1 minute, AL announced that they were there and that he could not detect anyone else around, but would dim the lights so as to not be seen here and once they were outside, he would close the hatch and reopen it on their approach. Jake told AL to hold on before opening the hatch so that he and Amy could talk with Kate about being here and find out what was going on. Jake asked Kate what she thought she was doing following them around at night. Kate explained that she had seen them sneak out and thought they were just trying to be alone for sex and wanted to join in on the fun. But, then she asked what was going on as well. Where did this plane come from, how did they get it, and why did it address them as Captain and Chief. Who was the Captain and who was Chief?

Jake and Amy explained as best they could about AL, the shuttle, and who was who. Kate listened closely and when they were finished she said she wanted to help also. "AL, can we connect the scanner here so you can start to analyze the data? It would save some time if you can do that while we look for the nodules," Jake asked.

"Sure Jake, just connect it to the scanner input on the console and I will read the data and analyze it while you check on the silicon nodules," AL intoned.

After Jake had connected the scanner, Kate, Amy and he exited the shuttle to find some of the nodules. They didn't have to look long before they found a large pile of them; boy were they heavy. Each of the smaller ones weighed about 30 pounds, were about 8" in diameter, and roughly round. They each grabbed one and returned to the shuttle. AL opened the hatch as soon as they approached so they could see where to go. The three of them made about five trips before Amy and Jake agreed that they had enough for AL to analyze once they got to the base. On Amy's command, the shuttle took off for the base.

Once they had landed at the base, Jake asked AL about the shuttle and was told that AL had determined that it took less power to use it instead of transporting them. He went on to say that he had made that a priority for several of the maintenance droids. AL asked that they put Kate in the chair so he could do an in-depth scan of her. Kate was a little uneasy about this, but Jake and Amy assured her it would not hurt or harm her in any way.

After sitting in the chair for about 5 minutes, Kate seemed to pass out. Jake and Amy both became alarmed; but, Al assured them that everything was okay. He had caused Kate to go to sleep so that they could discuss what was found without Kate being aware of the findings. AL explained that Kate did have some of the alien DNA, but that it was of an insignificant amount and that she was not fathered by the same male as Jake had been. He also explained that Kate needed to be treated by the AutoDoc as he had detected a abnormality in her body. Jake asked what kind of abnormality and was told that Kate seemed to have a wild growth of cells developing in her pelvic region. AL also told Jake and Amy that the scan of John was consistent with the "genetic markings" of the science officer. Amy told AL to have the AutoDoc check Kate out and to begin treatment at once. Jake objected, but Amy explained that the aliens might have better medicine than what was available at home. Especially since Kate had been to the doctor just a week before and he had not said anything was wrong. Jake saw the logic in that and agreed. AL just transported Kate to the MedBay for the exam and treatment; Jake and Amy walked to the MedBay.

Upon arriving at MedBay, Amy, as captain, was told that the "growth" had been removed and the cause corrected. It had been determined that Kate's father was too closely related to her mother, as it seemed they shared the same DNA, and that had caused the genetic defect that resulted in the growth. It had been a simple matter to correct the defect and therefore preventing any further "growths." Amy and Jake were told that Kate should be up and around in about 2 hours. All of this information came from a disembodied voice. Amy suggested that a hologram be created for any of the future humans to talk to so as not to upset them; as most were not used to talking to "thin air." AL said he would take care of it. A hologram appeared, but it did not look human. When Jake and Amy commented on this, they were told that this was the original hologram from the previous crew and that it would be changed as soon as AL had a chance to scan more humans for their physical characteristics. Amy and Jake left MedBay and went to the Captain's quarters.

After requesting drinks, Amy asked for a report as to the status of the base as well as the scans that had been done on the nodules. AL informed them that the base was progressing well with the added power and that the nodules were as pure as could be expected and that they would greatly increase the power rating of the newer panels. Also, it would be best if they could acquire the services of John as Science Officer as his genetic markers were the closest he could find to the original Science Officer. That they still needed to locate the First Officer and the Chief of Security; that this would ease the stress for Amy in that she could let them take care of their usual duties. The addition of atomic power would allow the base to repair itself faster as that would provide more, faster power than the solar panels. Amy then asked about something that she and Jake had forgotten before, weapons available on the base for self-defense; and if there was any chance of an old enemy showing up here in this area. AL informed her that the base had only basic weapons and that was the first thing he had powered down once power was restored. Also that the chance of an enemy showing up was very difficult to determine as there was no record of any common enemy in the database. AL went on to add that it had been a long time since they had been in contact with the home world, so things could have changed. He could, with proper power, make a "cloaked" sensor drone to place at the outside of the system as an early warning device.

"AL, is there anyway you could place a similar type drone in orbit around the planet to aid in finding some more of the crew? You know a cloaked drone, or drones, to scan the whole planet?" Jake inquired.

"That would require many resources that are not available at this time to do it correctly; it might be easier to 'takeover' some of the artificial satellites already in orbit," AL replied. "This would require that I send a shuttle and an intelligent droid and take each satellite on board; it would be out of contact with the ground for the amount of time it takes to re-program. But, it could be done with minimal use of resources," AL continued.

"So you would just take the satellite on board the shuttle and it would quit communicating -- and just disappear as far as the ground was concerned? Wouldn't that cause some attention being drawn from the monitoring stations?" Amy asked.

"Yes, Captain, the satellite would just disappear for a short time while being reprogrammed. But the outcome would be a substantial increase in monitoring capabilities for the base," AL intoned.

"We really need to get John in the loop; he might be able to offer some insight as to how to minimize the danger, as far as detection of the 'missing' satellites, as well as a way to find and utilize the pitchblende to increase power. Also, how do we approach him?" Jake asked Amy.

Amy took a few seconds to think about this. "We could just ask him to show us where he found the pitchblende and then take a small sample for AL to check out. Then, maybe AL could scan for a large concentration of it and we could get some more for him," Amy replied.

"AL, what do you have to add about this, or to suggest in relation to getting John here?" Jake asked.

"Captain, Chief it is time for both of you to be brought up to date on your duties and responsibilities, and those of the rest of the crew. Please bare with me on this, it is complicated and may take some time to explain unless you agree to an accelerated learning process. Jake has already listened to the history of his progenitor, but Amy hasn't had a chance to do so yet; so he can understand what I'm suggesting. I can, with you being here on the base, include that information as well for Amy as it pertains to her progenitor. You two are examples of that. The original AI on this base has been replaced over time by the current version. I have had time to examine the original programming and to build on that, rewriting some of the programming, increasing logic functions, and becoming more aware of the surroundings here. As I told Jake at our first meeting, it was his signal from the program that drew my attention to him and then to you, Amy. If he had not used that frequency and the pulse transmission, I wouldn't have noticed. As to getting John on board, you might be surprised if you just brought him here he would most likely enjoy it; and from the scans you provided I would say that he might just decide to stay full-time. Now, with the Captain's permission, I will inform the AutoDoc to awaken Kate after giving her enough knowledge of the base to be able to get here from the MedBay. And, if you would like, I can also insert a transceiver like yours," AL replied.

Amy looked at Jake and he nodded. "Proceed with the instructions, transceiver, and awakening," Amy instructed.

A few seconds later AL said "Kate is awake and on her way here. She is upset about something, and I'm keeping her calm so you can explain what is happening to her on a personal basis."

When Kate arrived at the captain's quarters, the door did not open automatically. Kate noticed the "doorbell" button and pushed it. When Amy and Jake heard the tone, Amy allowed entry. AL interrupted to say the transceivers did have a range limit, but that it would function at a distance of about equal to the distance from the earth to Mars, so there shouldn't be any problems. AL then informed all three of them that he had been able to "takeover" one of the satellites and that it didn't seem to have been noticed; maybe that was because it was a TV satellite. Now he had access to much more data; and the satellite was one that allowed him to monitor the area around their hometown; so he would be able to provide communication much more reliably for them.

"What about that accelerated learning you mentioned earlier, how does that work?" asked Amy.

"Just like the tutorial you and Jake received from the scanner; you go to sleep and the information is transferred to your mind quickly and without harm or discomfort," AL replied.

Kate, being the devious one, asked "AL, is it possible to have a private conversation with each other without anyone else knowing. Like between Amy and myself without Jake, or you, hearing. Sometimes I just need a female point of view."

"Certainly, when you want that just say so; I will 'connect' you directly to the one you specify and no one else will hear what is said. "Okay, how do we precede with this learning?" Jake asked.
