Chapter 16

The next morning Jake asked AL if there was any way for him to effect a large number of people; similar to the way AL had effected Carol through the "Program". AL replied that it was possible, especially now that he had significantly more power and many satellites under his control. Jake then asked if it would be possible for AL to remove memories form people, specifically the memory of Kate, Amy, John, Sally, and himself from the people back home. Also, if there was any way to remove the all records of them. AL replied that removing the records would be fairly easy as far as the computers went but that the paper records would not be that easy, they would have to be physically removed by hand. Jake told AL to research these questions but not let anyone know about them until he had a chance to talk with the people involved, namely the crew. AL informed Jake that he would be glad to do as asked but that his security protocols would prevent keeping the secret from Amy, and that to do these things he would have to have Amy's approval. Jake asked if AL could keep the secret until the research was finished at least. This was not a problem AL replied. Satisfied with the results of his queries, Jake went to breakfast.

"Good morning, I would like for you, Kate, Sally, John, and I to meet later today in private. I may have a way for us all to stay here on the base. I have AL researching it now. Please don't ask him about it, let me broach the subject later to all of you at the same time.

"You know we have not had, or taken, the chance for just the two of us to spend time together. I thought we would have more time together up here. But with all the excitement we seem to miss out on that. I would really like for us to make the time to get together." Jake said.

"That sounds like a great idea. After breakfast you want to go back to one of our rooms and see what we can think up to do?" Amy replied.

"With all the new people we "acquired", I don't think we would get very much time alone. I was thinking about us getting together after supper; you know, just the two of us without any interruptions until tomorrow morning." Jake added.

"Well, I'm sure that can be arranged." Amy replied.

About that time they both noticed that the rest of the crew was starting to arrive along with the new additions. So they both silently agreed to table this discussion until later. They were soon joined by Sally, Kate, John, Ted, and Sam. While everyone ate Amy asked what each person thought about the idea of letting the military know about the missiles and trucks that they had found, and looted. Everyone seemed to like the idea. Jake told them that he was going to try and get the new people settled in their new jobs and duties, at least as far as the ones that would be working in Engineering.

After everyone had finished their breakfast, they each left to take care of their duties. Ted and Sam went over and collected Tasha and Gregori, as they were working with them. Amy collected Ivan and took him to the Communications section to show him around there. Kate and Sally went directly to the flight deck. Jake had the ones for engineering to follow him. As Jake and his "crew" were leaving, AL sent him a message that AL intended to teach each of the Russians English so that it would be easier to explain things to them.

The day went pretty well; Ted got his message out to his former outfit, Sam and Tasha monitored the movements around the site of the missiles, Jake got everyone assigned to duties and shifts in Engineering, and Ivan made a real coup when he suggested that they also let the info "slip" to his former associates in Russia so that the ones responsible for "losing" the missiles could be apprehended and removed from causing more trouble. About 3pm Amy announced that there would be a meeting of the senior staff in her Ready Room at 4pm and that Kate and Sally were expected to be there also.

After everyone had arrived, Amy turned the meeting over to Jake and AL.

"Okay, everyone of us have been wondering how we could all stay here on base without causing a problem back home. Well, I've come with an idea that may work; but, we all have to agree on it. I've asked AL to research the idea and he says most of it can be done fairly easily. The idea is this; we have AL 'play with' the minds of our family, friends, and acquaintances back on Earth. AL will remove all knowledge of us from them and all computer records of us. Now the problem we have is that he can't remove the paper trail associated with those records remotely. That means that someone has to go back, undercover, and sneak in and physically remove the records after AL has located them.

"I have not gotten the results of that research yet; I wanted us all present when AL gave those results. But before we ask AL, I want the five of us to discuss it. If we can't agree then there is no reason to hear the results of AL's research. So, I would like for each of you, myself included, to take a few minutes and really think about this. I would imagine that once this is done it can not be undone without causing a lot of problems." Jake explained.

After about five minutes of silence, Amy spoke up first "As you are all aware, this would be less of a problem for me than each of you. Since all my family were killed, and I have very few relatives this idea does not present a problem to me. I can just go live with some distant relative and have AL request my school records. I would, in fact, just disappear. But, as Jake said, we all have to agree; it's all or nothing".

"There is another alternative but it would cause much stress and grief to our families. That is the option of arranging some type of accident were we are all killed. I personally do not like that option. I see nothing wrong with Jake's plan, if it is possible." John commented.

"Does this mean we can never see our parents again, or our friends?" Sally asked and Kate just nodded in agreement.

"No, you can see them but they won't remember you or even know who you are. It would be as if you never were born" John replied.

Amy then asked "Kate, you are being awfully quiet. What do you think about this? We all need your opinion and thoughts. Talking about this might help you decide."

"Are you sure that mother won't suffer? That is the only problem I have with it. I don't want my mother to have any more grief." Kate said emotionally.

Jake started to say something but Amy waved him off. "Kate, if this is possible, then as John said we would never exist so there can be no grief or pain of any type. We all love our parents, at least I did when they were alive. But this way we can stay here and they can go on with their lives without worry. I agree with John that the other option he mentioned is out of the question. It would cause too much stress and grief to the ones left behind. I won't try to make up your mind for you, and I won't stand for anyone else trying that either. If you have any questions then we can either wait for you to think it out some more or we can scrap the whole idea and return to Earth in a few days. Only you can decide what you want to do."

"I can't decide until I hear from AL. If this isn't possible then it is a waste of time and energy to think about it. If this is possible then I want to hear AL say so!" Kate exclaimed.

"Kate, I have been monitoring this conversation. My research shows that it very easily done, except for the paper records. After doing this the people you leave behind will not experience any sort of memory of you. As John put it you will never have been born as far as they are concerned; so there can be no pain or grief. But, there is a way to do this procedure that will allow for the memory to just be hidden in their minds. This is not as safe as removing the memory completely though. I can tell you, without a doubt,  that your loved ones will not suffer at all. It will take me about a solar day to accomplish this task and I will need the assistance of each of you to locate all of your relations" AL intoned.

"What about our friends?" Jake asked.

"I will just remove the memory of you from everyone in your home location. It is best to do this while they sleep to prevent any type of accidents. They would be disorientated for about 15 minutes if it is done while awake and could cause some mental problems. That will not happen if they are asleep when it is done." AL replied.

"Lets put it to a vote then. Just answer yes or no when your name is called. I say yes" Amy said.

"Kate?"     "yes"

"John?"     "yes"

"Sally?"     "yes"

"Jake?"     "yes"

"Then we are decided. AL please start the procedure with our families and friends tonight. Each of us will be accessible, and at your call, to point out our family members that live elsewhere. I think that does it for now; except that now that we have more people we need to split up the duties more. I will of course always be on call if needed, but I think we can split the day into three parts. Ted will be the person in charge, over all, during the evening, Jake during the late shift, and myself during the day for right now. We will start this in the morning, unless their are objections" Amy said as she ended the meeting.

Jake went back to engineering to check on his new members and then gave AL all the information he could regarding his relatives that lived elsewhere. Jake asked AL if it was possible to scan his mother's memory to see if there was anyone he had forgotten. AL liked the suggestion and said he should have thought of it previously. In fact that would be the best way to go, that way there shouldn't be any loose ends.

John mentioned that in reviewing some more of the archives he had found that the Progenitors had a much greater periodic table than was presently used on Earth.
