Chapter 4

 

The next morning when Jake awoke at about 6am, again, he started thinking about what had happened last night and what he had agreed to do. He didn't think that getting Amy to help would really be much of a problem. He just needed to come up with a good reason for getting the ore that AI needed. Jake went to his computer and tried to access the program but got nothing except a list of the items in the profiles no video, no audio, just nothing. "Oh well it was worth a try." Jake thought. It was too early to call Amy; so Jake decided to just get a shower, since he didn't take one the night before.

As Jake was going to the bathroom for his daily routine and shower, he noticed that Kate's door was open slightly and that she seemed to be moaning. While Kate was talking Jake got a message from AI that Kate shouldn't know what was going on; that it could cause problems if people found out about the hidden base. Jake was really temped, but then thought maybe he could get lucky with Amy later and that would be better; so, he told Kate that was okay but not right now, as he wanted to review something on his computer before Amy got there. Besides if what Kate had told was true that he might try and see if Amy was agreeable to some "fun" later. Kate looked disappointed but said she understood; and that the offer was still there if he wanted to later. With that, she left him to his computer.

Jake asked AI how he was to find the Silicon ore at the pit. The voice in his head said it would guide him once there. At a quarter till ten, Amy arrived and Jake offered his explanation as to why he wanted to go look for some special rocks in the pit. Amy asked about the program and if he had made any more progress; Jake told her it had "crashed" and he hadn't been able to get it back up yet. He told her then that maybe a break from it would allow him to look at things with a fresh view. Therefore, he and Amy left for the pits. They had only been at the pit for about 5 minutes when AI started telling Jake where to look and what to look for. Jake had brought along some drinks, and after about an hour and a half suggested they take a break in the shade and have something to drink. After opening both their drinks Jake finally got up the nerve to just lean over and kiss Amy on the cheek. Amy didn't pull away; but asked why he kissed her. Jake explained that he just felt like doing that and hoped she didn't mind. Amy assured him that she didn't mind in the least and had hoped that he would do it more often. Jake very reluctantly asked Amy to sit down and explained that the computer would fully explain what was going on. Amy just as reluctantly complied with the requests and put the "headband" on.

When Amy woke up about 10 minutes later she said that she "kind of" understood, what she was "told" but it gave her a headache. Moreover, she understood that she needed to keep the headband on. She then asked if they could look around the base. They were both told that the majority of the base was shutdown to conserve energy; but they could look around in this area, as it was part of the main AI area. They were told to place a hand on the scanner to exit this room. That it would take a few seconds for the AI to configure their access. When Amy put her hand on the doorplate the door opened immediately and a voice was heard to say "Welcome back Captain". They then heard, via the headband, the AI ask what she had done and that he didn't know until she touched the plate that she was the descendant of the past captain. AI then asked that they both follow the lights and that Jake try to open the door that they came to. When Jake touched the plate by the new door, they heard "ACCESS DENIED Captain's Quarters". Amy touched the plate and the door opened immediately. After they had entered the room Amy went straight to the Captain's desk and touched a series of buttons and the computer interface came on. Jake was amazed at this, as was Amy, but she said she just seemed to know what to do and didn't think that the AI had told her to do this.

"That is correct Captain; until you accessed this interface I didn't even know about the hidden program that you accessed. Please, give me a moment to correlate. Jake, Amy, it seems that Amy is THE descendant of Captain Tuvoc and that she had reactivated the main AI as opposed to the peripheral AI you had been dealing with. Now that I'm awake I need you Jake to put your hand on the scanner by the terminal"

As soon as Jake touched the scanner, the computer said "Acknowledged, Welcome back Chief Engineer". This startled both Jake and Amy. They couldn't even collect their thoughts when the computer said "You don't need the neural bands while you are on base now; but they will be needed if you return to the surface in order to communicate with the base." Amy finally said that she could remember a few more things, like how to completely access the base AI. But that she needed to know, what the status was as to power and resources available. Then Jake told her that he seemed to remember something that he needed to do, and asked the AI if there was enough power available to transport him and Amy to the main engineering lab. Once there, he might be able to increase power output and help adapt the power source. They were suddenly inside the main engineering lab; Jake went to a section of the wall, touched it and said "Access compartment 51; access code beta 15 delta 1 omega 3". A small section of the wall opened and Jake removed a silver cord and attached it to the headband then placed the headband on his head. His eyes glazed over for a few seconds then he just blinked a couple of times and removed the headband and went to a terminal and started diagnostics on the main computer system. After a few seconds, he went to another panel, removed it and looked inside. He then went to a different section of the room, opened a compartment removed two modules, returned to the open panel, and replaced the modules there with the new ones. "Power output optimized correlation initiated". "There, now we need to get that ore processed so we can make the needed parts to upgrade the system. My predecessor should have thought of this, maybe then they wouldn't have had to abandon the base." Jake said.

At that point, Amy asked him what he had done. Jake explained that it was just swapping modules so that the base/ship could better utilize the solar power it had been collecting and that with the ore processed and the Silicon replicated in the appropriate amounts they could construct a large solar collector and supply unlimited power for the base/ship. Amy suddenly put the headband on, but nothing happened. Then she got an embarrassed look on her face and said, "Neural interface access Captain's level". Her eyes glazed over for a few seconds then she too blinked, removed the headband, and said she now understood what commands to issue to get the base back into operation but she could only do it from the Captain's quarters as that was the only terminal with the proper access. Amy looked at Jake and said she didn't really like calling the AI "AI" and thought they should give it a real name. Jake agreed and suggested the name AL. Both of them agreed that sounded good; so Amy addressed the AI, "AI, command override; Delta Beta Sigma. Access main AI interface, from this point on you will respond to the name of AL instead of AI. Except for official, times you are instructed to address us both by our first names instead of Captain or Chief Engineer. Acknowledge". "Override accepted and instructions implemented Amy. Jake is this your wish also?" AL replied. Jake agreed to the naming and addressing changes. "Amy, Jake, if you want, with these changes to the power system, I will start refining the ore and making the solar panels; this will take about 1 time unit, 2 hours of your time, so fell free to relax until I can finish. With these modifications I can reactivate the power to each of your apartments." AL said then.

Jake and Amy returned to the Captain's quarters. After looking around there, they went to see what the Chief Engineer's quarters looked like. They both decided that they liked the captain's quarters much better and returned there. With the memories that had been restored Amy, and Jake, were able to pull up several different sensor scans that dated back to just after the base had been abandoned. These scans showed that the only reason that the base had been moved was to hide it from future inhabitants of this planet until such time as they became proficient enough to find the base and possibly reactivate it. By now AL had finished the modifications and had contacted Jake and Amy to tell them that all was proceeding quite well, and to remind them that they had been gone for more than 3 hours of their time. AL then provided each of them with a subcutaneous transceiver so that they could communicate with each other as well as the base. After spending a few minutes getting used to the transceivers they were both returned to the gravel pit.

Upon arriving back at the gravel pit, Jake and Amy started back towards the house to discuss the events of the day. As they walked, Jake just took Amy's hand, it seemed so natural to do so and Amy didn't complain one bit. They were still about 10 minutes from home and still in a very secluded part of the trail when Amy stopped and asked Jake if he still felt like kissing her. Jake was concerned about what Kate might say to Amy, or visa versa, when they went to bed. Amy said she needed a shower after all the dust and dirt they had been through today, so Kate said she would show her where everything was for her shower. Jake went to his room and his computer, just to see if maybe AL had reconnected his program.
