Chapter 2
John - American-Caucasian, 34 years old, married, father of 2
Joyce - American-Irish, 30 years old, John's wife
Brenda - 12 years old, John and Joyce's daughter
John Jr. - 10 years old, John and Joyce's son
Alec - American-Caucasian, 51 years old, divorced, father of 3
John and Joyce were finishing up breakfast with the kids...
"Anyway, Alec and I are going to the gym again tonight."
"Well, tell Alec I said hi and that we all miss him." Joyce smiled.
"Will do, sweetheart." John smiled as he helped Joyce load the dishwasher.
"Kids, don't be late for the bus! Give your father a kiss goodbye."
"I love you, Daddy!" Brenda said as she hugged and kissed him.
"Bye, Dad!" John Jr. high-fived his dad.
"You better get going too, honey." Joyce kissed John on the lips. "Try not to be late for dinner."
Later that day...
John took a short nap after dinner, then met Alec at the gym later that evening. The two worked out for about an hour and then decided to grab a drink.
"Have you thought about what we talked about?"
"Oh, I don't know, Alec."
"John, believe me when I tell you, you will never find another opportunity like this again."
"You're really talking this up. But anybody can score a hooker."
"Like I said, it's more than that. It's a total experience. For a very specific clientele. And it's by invitation only."
"Ok. Tell me more about it." John said out of appeasement.
"First off, everything is included. Accommodations, meals, activities... I mean everything. Once you arrive, there is a selection process that will guarantee you get exactly what you want."
"Like Vegas."
"Vegas couldn't hold a candle. What I'm talking about... let me just say, remember when you were a teen. And on top of that, whatever scenario you want, that is guaranteed too."
John thought for a moment. " Where is this place?"
"We'll get to that later. Interested?"
"I don't know. So, what, a couple grand?"
"John, this isn't just an overnight stay. Before I tell you more, I need to know if you'll commit. Like I said, this is by invitation only, and these folks are as serious about their business as we are ours."
"I can appreciate that. Alec, you're making this sound pretty amazing."
"Once in a lifetime offer, John. Take it, or leave it."
"You still haven't really told me anything. How long, how much..."
"4 weeks, $35 grand. That's all I can tell you."
"$35,000?! Are you crazy?!" John set his drink on the table.
"Go big or go home, John."
"Whew! That's some heavy dough!"
"Think of it this way. It's just under $9,000 per week. Not a bad deal considering everything, including travel, is included. John, the way this business works... nobody will ever find out."
"How much is an over night?"
"No. It doesn't work like that. The package is for 4 weeks."
"$35 grand. Wow." John paused. "How do you even get away for that long?"
"You'll have to figure that out. You can say that it's a business trip."
John took a few more sips of his drink while he though to himself.
"It must be some experience. Ok. I can't believe I'm saying this, but, let's say I consider it..."
"I'll make a call and let them know. Once you've paid, your spot will be guaranteed and travel details will be provided."
"When does this happen?"
"They go month rotations. The next one is in 3 weeks."
"Are you going too?"
"I just got back, but I am going again in a couple of months."
"How often do you do this?"
"Two, sometimes three times a year... for the past 10 or so."
"Are you serious!? Jeez, Alec, that's some serious dough! Ok, maybe once, just for the experience... what do I need to do?"
"I'll call to let them know, and then you call to confirm. Write this number on your arm, wash it off after the call. Go buy a pre-paid phone. Pay cash. Call the number, say 'Paradise Island', and they will give you instructions. After the call, smash it up and pitch it. Before you meet them make sure you have the full amount."
"Wait, I give them the full amount? How do I know they just won't take it?"
"It's a business, John... by invitation. If they didn't fulfill their end of the bargain how would they retain repeat clientele?"
"Ok, fair enough. The only thing left is, how do I get way for that length of time?"
"Just say that you're going on a new venture business trip with me. We can vouch for each other and say that the phone service is just about non-existent. Say you'll try to call if you can, but if you can't not to worry. Tell Joyce that that the venture is risky so she won't question the missing money. Don't talk about it more than you have to."
Nervously, after buying a pre-paid phone, John went through with the call. The following morning he headed to the bank to take a lump sum of money out of his safety deposit box. It was arranged that he would meet somebody at a designated location to hand over the cash. The person on the receiving end gave John explicit instructions on the next meeting location and instructed him not to bring any personal items or changes of clothes.
