   Alice switched subjects as we continued to walk down the sidewalk.  She
began to complain about spending a whole month at her grandparents.  She
told me she loved them a lot but there wasn't much to do at the lake but
swim.  She laughed saying that it gets old after a week or so.  When I
asked when she was leaving she told me in two days.  I told her that I was
going to miss her and would be waiting for her to get back so we can have
some fun before school starts again.

   "See ya Alice.  Call me tonight." I told her as we parted ways at the
corner.

   We only lived a block apart and have been friends since kindergarten. 
Alice was 11 like me.  She had short black hair while mine was more of a

   She sat down at the table and asked me if anything exciting happened at

about Alice leaving for a month.  She said that she knew because she talked
to Alice's mom yesterday.

   "Guess what mom?  Zack asked me to the Return to School dance in
September.

   "Is that the Zack that lives a couple of houses from Alice?"

   "He seems nice.  I've talked to him when I bumped into him and his mom
at the grocery store.  He's kind of cute too?" She said with a wink.

   "MOM!" I screeched then giggled.

   Just then the back door opened up and in walked my older brother.

   "Hey mom, hey squirt." He greeted us.

   "Put your stuff away where it belongs then come back for some cookies if
you want." Mom told him.

   When he headed for his room, I asked mom not to mention my date.  I
explained that Ryan would tease me about it.  She smiled and motioning like

table. Mom asked him if he had any plans for the summer.  He said he was
going to see if he could get some lawn jobs to make some spending money.

   "Aren't you growing up." Mom laughed.

   "I'm proud of you Ryan.  I know things have been kind of tight since dad
died.  I'm hoping to get more hours at the hospital now that school is
out."

   "We are doing okay mom.  I have everything I need." I told her.

   "You two are the best." Mom said kissing each of our cheeks.

   Ryan grabbed a couple of cookies then said he was going to the park to
shoot some hoops with his friends.  Mom told him to be home by 5.  He
assured her that he would be home by then.

   "What are your plans for the rest of the afternoon?" Mom asked.

   "Mom, can I go see a doctor?"

   "What's wrong, do you feel sick?" Mom fussed.

   "No, it's not like that.  Can I show you something in my room."

   Mom asked me again why I wanted to see a doctor but I told her that I
needed to show her.  When I got to my room, I told her to sit on the bed.
When she was sitting down I pulled my t-shirt over my head and tossed it on

   "Look at the pimples on my back and there are some on my chest and face
too."

   "Oh honey, pimples are normal for kids.  Some get more than others."

   "If it was just one or two I wouldn't care but it's getting worse."

   Mom could see how upset it was making me.  She smiled and pulled me
close to her.  She kissed my cheek then told me that she would look for a
dermatologist on line.  She said it might be a while for an opening.  I
asked if we could look now for one.  She smiled then handed me my t-shirt
telling me to get dressed while she fired up the computer.

   I followed her to the living room and sat next to her on the couch.  She
had the laptop on her lap and was googling dermatologist near me.  When she
hit enter, several names appeared.  She carefully read about each doctor
and what he specialized in.  When she was done she went back to one of them
and reread the reviews.

   "This one might be okay.  Dr.  Sven Jorgenson, he comes from Sweden and
specializes in acne and other skin conditions."

   "Can we call for an appointment?:"

   "I suppose so if it means so much to you." She sighed.

   Mom dialed the number then put the phone on speaker so I could hear. 
When the receptionist answered, mom asked to schedule an appointment.  The
lady said that they were a couple of months out but we could be put on a
list to be called if a cancellation happened.  Mom told her that was fine.
The appointment was made for the middle of August.  I was disappointed
because any cure wouldn't happen before the dance but at least I could
start it.  I thanked mom before heading to my room to unpack my backpack.
Once that was done, I curled up on the bed with a book and began to read.

   Mom called me down for supper.  I didn't realize how long I was reading.
Ryan was already at the table shoveling his food into his mouth.

   "Glad you waited for me." I laughed as I watched him take another big
forkful of food.

   The next few days went by slowly with Alice out of town.  I did a lot of
reading and went to the park a couple of times to watch Ryan play ball. 
Ryan kind of kept an eye on me while mom was working.  I tried not to be a

fine.  After his game, we walked home together.  I asked him what he wanted
for supper and I would fix it.  He suggested spaghetti and meatballs.  I
told him that I would start that as soon as we got home.

turned from the stove and looked at my brother.

   "What do you mean?  I feel fine."

   "I thought you might not be feeling good, I see you have a doctor
appointment in August."

   "Oh that.  It's nothing." I said turning back to the stove.

   "Okay, if you say so." He said as he went to the den to watch TV.

   I smiled to myself thinking that I was so lucky to have a brother that
worried about me but also respected me enough not to press me on personal
matters.

   Mom came home and dinner was ready and the table set.  She quickly
changed out of her scrubs and came back to the table.  Ryan told her about
the game he played in and I added to his story.  She told us of a few of

   Every day was just about the same.  Alice would call a couple of times a
week and chatted about what she had been doing since the last time we
talked.  The big even came about a week later when I got a call from Dr. 
Jorgenson's office.  They said they had a cancellation and wanted to know
if I could come in tomorrow.  I told her to hold a minute or so to give me
time to check the calendar.  I hurried back to the phone and said that we
would be there tomorrow.  The receptionist told me that the appointment was
for 11 a.m.  and to come about 15 minutes early to fill out some forms. 
When I hung up, I dialed the hospital's number so I could tell mom.  I
asked to speak to Donna when I was connected to her floor's nurses station.


   "Hello this is Donna."

   "Mom, Dr.  Jorgenson called and they have an opening for tomorrow
morning.  I checked the calendar and it's your day off.  I told them I
would be there.  It's okay isn't it?"

   Mom giggled saying that it was fine and she needed to get back to work.
I told her that I loved her and hung up the phone.  I had forgotten that my
brother was in the room when the Dr.  office called.  Ryan asked why I was
so excited about going to the doctors after I hung up with mom.

   "It's nothing Ryan."

   "Well pardon me for giving a shit." Ryan cussed.

   "Hey, I'm sorry Ryan.  Really it's nothing serious.  I want to see if
the Dr.  can give me something for these pimples."

   "Oh, is that all.  It's no big deal Peggy.  All kids get them.  I have
them."

   "Yeah right.  Your face is clear." I shot back.

   My brother lifted his t-shirt and turned around so I could see his back.

   "See.  I have them too.  Probably hereditary." He chuckled.

   "Well, I don't like them.  It's different for a girl.  A guy don't want

personality."

   "Thanks Ryan.  Your so sweet." I said as I kissed his cheek.

   "Wanna come to the park and watch the game?"

   "Nah, Alice is suppose to call.  Thanks anyway."

   Ryan pulled his shirt back on and headed out the door.  I decided that I
would start a nice pot roast for supper.  I peeled the potatoes, onions,
and carrots put them in the roaster together with the roast.  I set the
oven to time back so it would be done around the time mom would be home
from work.  I cleaned up the mess I made then went to my room.

   When mom came home, the table was set, Ryan was putting the food on the
table.  Mom thanked us for doing all this for her.  We enjoyed a great meal
and talked about each of our days.  I rambled on about going to the Dr. 
Mom looked at me then at Ryan.  I giggled telling mom that I told Ryan why
I was going to the doctor.  I said that he was nice and didn't tease me at
all.

   "Yeah mom, it's no big deal.  I showed her that I had pimples too."

   "Thank you honey.  She is self conscience about it."

   "No biggie." Ryan said as he took another bite of food.

   The rest of the evening was spent watching TV.  Mom asked me again what
time the appointment was.  I told her 11.  She said that maybe after that
we would go the mall for lunch and a little shopping.  She asked Ryan if he
wanted to come.  With a laugh he told her that a day shopping with two
women was not his idea of a good time.  He said he'd spend the day with
Allen at the park.  I told her I was going to take a shower then go to bed.
I kissed her cheek and said good night to her and Ryan.

   I woke the next morning and the first thing I thought about was going to
the Dr.  to get a cure for my pimples.  I got out of bed and dressed in a
nice pair of shorts and a matching blouse.  I went kitchen where I found
mom sitting at the table sipping a cup of coffee.

   "Good morning sweetie."

   "Morning mom." I said as I grabbed a bowl from the cupboard for my
cereal.

   I poured a bowlful of corn flakes.  I added some milk and sugar then sat
at the table with mom.  Ryan came in the room shortly after.  Mom gave Ryan
a list of things to do before he went to Allen's.  He assured her that he
would get them done before going.  Mom said she was going to take a shower
and get dressed so we could get going.  Ryan went to start the chores that
mom wanted done.  I picked up the breakfast dishes and put them in the
dishwasher.  When mom came back down everything was done.

   "We're leaving Ryan.  We'll be home late this afternoon.  We'll get a
pizza for supper." Mom told him.

   "Cool." Came is response from the basement where he was cleaning.

   It took almost a half hour to get to the Dr.  office.  Mom parked the
car in the lot and we walked into his office.  Mom checked me in and
received a pile of papers to fill out.  When they were filled out she
handed them back with her insurance card.  It wasn't long before I heard my
name called.  A young nurse took me back.  Mom followed.  The nurse weighed
me, then checked my temperature and blood pressure.  She led us into an
examining room saying that the Dr.  would be in soon.  She closed the door
behind her when she left.  A few minutes later there was a light tap on the
door then it opened.

   "Good morning.  I'm Dr.  Jorgenson but my patients call me Dr.  J."

   "Hi, I'm Donna and this is my daughter Peggy." Mom told him.

   "Well, nice to meet both of you.  What brings you in today Peggy?"

   "I. . .uhm. . .I'm hoping you can do something about my . . .ah. . .my
pimples." I stammered.

   "First of all, nothing to be embarrassed about.  It's all part of
growing up.  Let me take a look."

   Dr.  J came over to the table and looked closely at my forehead and
feeling each of the zits.  He asked me if I had any more elsewhere.  I told
him I had some on my upper chest.  He asked if he could take a look.  I
glanced at mom and she nodded her head.  I unbuttoned my blouse and opened
it wide so he could see them.  I was so glad I decided to wear my training
bra today.

   "Okay Peggy, you can button up again."

   He sat on his stool and typed into the computer his findings.  He turned
to me telling me that he thought he could help.  He said that there was a
new treatment that is being used in Sweden and he thought it could help me.
I told him that I would try anything to get rid of them.

   "Okay then, why don't you go back out to the waiting room while I talk
to your mother for just a moment." Dr.  J told me.

   "Can't I stay and listen."

   "Not this time Peggy.  I need to discuss the treatment with your
mother." He replied.

   "Go ahead sweetie, I'll be out in a few minutes."

   I got up and left my mom and Dr.  J.  I sat in the waiting room for
almost 20 minutes before mom came out.  She came over to me and said "Let's
go."

   "Is everything okay mom?" I asked once we got out of the building."

   "I'm fine." She shot back.

   I stopped and looked at her wondering what was wrong.  She stopped a few
feet ahead of me and turned to me.

   "Get in the car."

   "What's wrong?" I asked when I closed the car door.

   Mom sat in the drivers seat with her hands gripping the steering wheel
so tight that her knuckles were turning white.

   "Did Dr.  J give you a prescription?"

   "Never mind Peggy.  We'll talk about it later."

   "But. . ."

   "Not now." Mom said loudly.

   I felt tears well up in my eyes.  Mom turned and looked at me seeing a
tear roll down my cheek.  She grabbed my hand and apologized to me.

   "I'm sorry honey.  Dr.  J explained the treatment and I just need to
process it all.  I'll explain later tonight or tomorrow once I read up all
the literature he gave me on it."

   "Okay mom."

   "I'm sorry Peggy.  Let's go to the mall and get some food."

   Mom tried but failed to be good company.  I suggested that we just go
home.  Mom apologized again but agreed with my suggestion.  As soon as we
got home, she poured herself a big glass of wine.  She leaned against the
counter and drained half the glass.  She poured in some more then headed
for the den.  She had a stack of papers that were stapled together.  She
told me to go play so she could read.  I went to my room to read but after
two hours I just had to go back and see if mom was done.

   "I'm sorry Peggy.  You are going to have to wait until I get home from
work tomorrow.  I need to check with a doctor at work about this."

   "Oh mom, can't you tell me what the treatment is?"

   "Not yet honey.  I'll explain tomorrow night.  I promise.  Pinky swear."

   "I am sorry Peggy, I know you want to get started on treatment but this

tomorrow."

   "Okay mom, I know you are just looking out for me.  I love you." I told

   "I'm going to take a shower then go to bed.  See you in the morning." I
said as I left mom to keep paging through the paperwork from the Dr.  J.

   I woke the next morning hoping that mom gets everything worked out.  I
really need to start the treatment so my pimples will go away before that
dance.  The day was just like all the others.  I went to the park to watch
Ryan's game then came home and got dinner started.  When mom walked through
the doorway, I saw that she was carrying the paperwork from Dr.  J.  She
saw where I was looking and gave me a big smile and a thumbs up sign.  I
could hardly wait for dinner to get done so mom and I could have our talk.

   Mom went to shower while Ryan and I set the table.  As usual we chatted

   Mom sat in the recliner and I plopped down on the couch.  She took a

   "Huh, what's that got to do with the doctor visit?" I said in surprise.

   "Just tell me, please."

   I found myself alone and decided to go reread the literature from Dr. 
J. I read the part over and over again about the internal treatment.  I
