Celestial Reviews 103 - July 27, 1996
Note: I get literally hundreds of requests from people I don’t know
who want me to send them copies of stories or at least to tell them
where they can find the stories I review. I don’t have time to respond
to these messages individually.
All the stories that I review are found on alt.sex.stories. They are
almost always posted within a few days of the time when my reviews
appear. Many authors are kind enough to repost their stories after I
review them. Furthermore, I post monthly and annual lists of Top
Stories, and authors whose stories make these lists often repost their
stories.
In addition, many authors have Web Sites at which their stories can be
found. Here is a list of web sites that I know about.
Mark Aster has set up a Web site with all the Allens stories:
http://users.aol.com/myfrthal/
There is a Web site for Deirdre stories. If someone sends me the
address, I’ll post it.
Robot Fetish stories are posted at:
http://users.aol.com/robotdoll/asfr.html
Some hot femdom stories can be found at
http://www.webcom.com/~akasha/
Elf Sternberg stories are posted at:
http://www.halcyon.com/elf/index.html
Sisters Ng stories are posted at:
http://members.aol.com/deidreng/index.htm
Tooshoes, the author of the Supergirl stories, has a site at
http://www.netcom.com/~tooshoes/PenPartners.html
Cindy archives her own stories and some others at
http://members.aol.com/cyntil8ing
A good set of TG stories by several authors is found at
http://satchmo.physik.TU-
Berlin.DE/~zirzlaff/nienor/pub/Stories/Nostrumos_Book/
Warthog stories are posted at:
http://www.connect.net/linetwo/stories.html
Estragon’s stories are posted at:
ftp://unix.tpe.com/pub/estragon
The Wulf stories (and apparently some others) are archived at:
http://www.teleport.com/~marawuti.
Mary Anne Mohanraj posts her own stories at
http://mud.bsd.uchicago.edu.
The following web page contains my reviews of the Top 100 Stories of
1995 along with the stories themselves:
http://proffa.cc.tut.fi/~k113973/
If any of these are no longer current or if there are others I should
add, please contact me. I am interested only in free, non-commercial
sites. However, I’ll also plug the following organization; although
they charge for membership, they GIVE stories away to non-members. (I
suppose they hope you’ll eventually join.)
The BackDrop Club offers a service of helping people who are looking for a
specific file, story, or a chapter or section of a story. If you are an adult
and know the name of the file you wish to receive, send a request using the
following format:
TO: file.archives@backdrop.com
SUBJECT: (the name of the file you wish as a single word)
I HAVE used this service myself, and it is my opinion that it is NOT a
rip-off. If you need more information, contact robin@backdrop.com.
The BackDrop Club also has a Web Page at http://www.fantasies.com.
Another interesting service is the "Diana Rhodes Efficient Amazon Mail
Story-server," DREAMS for short. This service archives and will
automatically mail to you upon request several of my Top 100 Stories of
last year plus many other stories. To get help, send for the document
help01 by sending a message to na644546@anon.penet.fi. The subject of
that email should be "Request story".The content of the email should
be:
X-Story-code: help01
X-address: youraddress@server.com
X-Declaration: I am over 18 years old
Second Note: Another source of stories might be the reposts that often
appear in flurries on a.s.s. If you use my reviews as a basic list,
you may be able to find many of the stories in these reposts.
Currently THC is reposting a huge archive of stories, which are of
uneven quality and several of which I have reviewed in recent weeks.
EBS is also reposting stories, mostly of poor to medium quality and
with bdsm themes. Somebody else is reposting stories labeled “TG
Repost”; and these are almost always of high quality - but they
invariably have transgender plots that might not appeal to everyone.
An unnamed reposter is currently reposting 71 stories, which usually
appear in sets of about 20 stories, with “Repost:” beginning each title
line. The advantage here is that the reposter is posting only what
he/she considers to be “good” stories; and so if your opinion of good
coincides with his/her opinion (and mine often does), you may find a
large number of good stories. Ironically, although the author says, “I
did not write these stories; the credit should go to the authors,” the
names of all the authors have been systematically omitted. I hate this
omission of authorship, not only for reasons I have previously stated
but also because it makes it impossible for a reader to verify that a
story is really the one I am looking for. For example, one repost was
labeled “Brandi,” but it is not the story to which I gave a positive
rating in CR 102 - although it does appear to be a pretty good story in
its own right. Likewise, the author claims that the stories “should be
complete”; but I noted that “Bird Watchers” - an excellent story - is
far from complete. However, even though it is not the whole story, the
segment of “Bird Watchers” that is reposted does contain a whole
episode from the original story, and so it is likely to be enjoyable to
readers who are unaware that they are missing a lot more. {Please do
not write to me asking to send you the “missing parts.” I won’t do it;
and I won’t respond to the request. My time and generosity are
finite.} My advice is (1) that readers might like to check out this
person’s reposts and (2) that this person should post the authors’
names with their stories, if he/she really wants the credit to “go to
the authors.”
Third Note: At school I have access to the Deja News search engine. I
have found that I can locate and download almost any recent story by
simply typing its title or (usually more simply) the author’s e-mail
name (e.g., Celeste801) into the search box. If you are able to access
this service, you should be able to get this issue’s “Trinity Trilogy”
stories (for example), by seraching for “Trinity Trilogy stbush.” I
imagine you could get “Caitlin's Tale” by simply searching for Caitlin,
since that is an unsual name. I do not get a commission from Deja News
for telling you this; and I suggest that you be careful not to leave
traces (as in Netscape’s GO or BOOKMARK menus) that will accidentally
give children access to these stories.

* Repost of a previous review (because the story has been
recently reposted).
“Discovery" by Michael K. Smith (mksmith@metronet.com). The guy works
in the library reference area, and an attractive girl whom he would
like to meet accidentally drops her purse on the floor. Instead of
picking it up for her, he waits for her to leave and then retrieves the
purse. He checks its contents. What will he do? If this were a
Parker story, he would try to use the information obtained from the
purse to stalk its owner and make her into his sexual slave. However,
Parker is a complex author; and so the guy might wind up becoming HER
sexual slave.
If the author were either SueNH or Ann Douglas, the guy would return
the purse but would first look in the window of her house or apartment
and discover her making love to her female roommate. He would probably
knock on the door, and the purse’s owner would recognize him as the
author of several of her favorite stories on a prominent Internet
newsgroup and would invite him to join the festivities. The sex would
be explicitly described and wildly erotic, but nothing much kinkier
than three-way sex.
If the author were Backrub or one of the Ng sisters, the range of
possibilities would expand rapidly, depending on the mood of the
author. The guy might find Tammy’s diary in the purse, read it, and
insert himself into her love life. The purse would almost certainly
contain at least one dildo and probably several other sextoys.
{Indeed, if this were a story by May Anne Mohanraj, the story might be
told from the perspective of the dildo.} The woman to whom the guy
returns the purse might be a vampire. Almost certainly there would be
passionate heterosexual activity, and it is not particularly likely
that the guy would die during the ensuing action.
If Wollstonecraft wrote the story, the guy would return the purse; but
the woman would be either a nun or a member of a coven of witches.
They would be hostile to him, until he offered to impregnate them all
during a wild orgy, at which time they would become submissive but
passionate. It is very possible that somebody might die during the
ensuing orgies.
If Mark Aster were the author, the girl would be Pat Allen, the lovely
and vivacious older sister of the equally lovely and vivacious Julie
Allen. When he returned the purse, the guy would find its owner making
tender love to her sister and to an extremely sexy stud in a
metaphorically rich environment. They would invite him to join the
festivities, and the author would choreograph his orgasm to coincide
emphatically with those of the Three Amigos.
If Joe Parsons wrote this story, the guy would call the girl and have a
really nice, erotic conversation with her. It would be a truly
delightful conversation, but he would later receive a bill for $240.
If this were Stephanie’s story, the girl would really be a guy who just
looked like a girl - actually, he would be both a guy and a girl. This
would be the first of ? parts to be posted over a period of 14 months.
If this were by Estragon, the plot would be similar to Stephanie’s; but
the number of parts would keep changing. If it were by Vickie Tern,
the plot would again be similar, except that the girl would be a guy
who had become a girl to please a wife who really wanted a girlfriend
with whom she could pick up men. Also, the guy would be a hair stylist
rather than a library assistant. In addition, the story would have
been revised three times since Vickie first posted it yesterday.
If this were written by Shelby Bush, the story would be a parody of
“Murphy Brown.” The guy would try to return the purse, but Murphy
would be interviewing Ralph Nader, with whom she is secretly in love
but cannot get off first base. I’m unclear on the specifics, but
somehow during an early part of the story Hillary Clinton would become
involved in a menage a trois with Murphy and Ralph, while the guy
watched and masturbated with a defective dildo, which Nader would
eventually work into a class-action lawsuit. Later, Dan Quayle would
have trouble spelling the plural of dildo and would express the opinion
that he was glad he studied Latin in high school, in case he wanted to
have sex with a woman from Latin America. If this were an Uncle Mike
story, it would still be a parody of Murphy Brown; but the guy would be
a blind man whose dog would sodomize Murphy.
Of course, if this were Deirdre’s story, the man would return the
purse, only to find its owner living in an old warehouse that she
shared with seventeen other women who spent most of their time nakedly
worshipping a female dom who fucked them anally with a large dildo
shaped like a snake while their husbands hung by their feet from meat
hooks and sucked each other’s cocks. Although he would be the narrator
of the story, the guy would never be seen again.
If I wrote the story myself, the guy would return the purse to the
woman, but she would be a bit of a jerk. She would leave on a date
with someone else, but the guy would become attracted to her roommate -
a socially mature, intelligent person who would discuss world politics
with him over a banana split, which they would share. After dating for
several months, he would propose to her. They would engage in heavy
petting, but they would not have sexual intercourse until the night of
their wedding, which would occur in a beautiful church in the presence
of their fully clothed friends. None of their relatives (nor the
priest) would have intercourse with either of them on their wedding
night, but the couple would see metaphorical fireworks as they together
explored the wonders of each other’s bodies.
If Dirty Dawg wrote the story, the plot would be similar to mine,
except that the guy would first treat the girl badly, then realize ten
years later what he had missed and make it up to her during a whirlwind
courtship climaxing in tender, multiorgasmic sex. If Frank McCoy or
The Bear were the author, the plot would again be similar to mine,
except that the girl would be much younger - probably the guy’s
daughter. The Observer’s plot would likewise be similar to mine; but
it would be spread out over about six different stories and would have
been edited by all the other authors mentioned in this review.
If this were a porn movie instead of a short story, the woman would be
Tori Wells, playing a character named either Eustacia Vye or Pussy
Galore - both of which names have amazingly appeared in the non-
censored media (one more amazingly than the other). The college kid
would be played by a middle-aged fat guy, perhaps Ron Jeremy. Ron
would follow Tori when she left the library, but we would never see her
again - except on the jacket of the videotape. Ron would go through a
door into a cheap motel room with a beautiful fireplace, where he would
have oral sex with a listless woman named Randi Cunt, who very well
might be the inspiration for all those dumb blonde jokes I see on
rec.humor, while a Scandinavian guy with long blond hair and a black
guy with a monster cock did a double penetration on her. The actual
action would take about three minutes, but clever looping would consume
fifteen minutes, while Randi said clever things like, “I love your big
cock” and “Cum on my face.” Indeed, all three men would cum
externally, and Randi would rub the cum or a mixture of flour and water
all over her body while she said things like “oooooo!~
I apologize to all the authors whose works I did not satirize in the
previous paragraphs - as well as to those whom I did mention. The
story’s actual plot was quite interesting and contained elements of
several of my proposed story lines. One of Smith’s main strengths is
his ability to write highly literate and realistic stories from many
different perspectives. I find him pleasantly difficult to predict.
All I’ll add about the plot is that I think it gives a nearly perfect
treatment of romantic interracial sex. As I’ve said before, I am a
white woman with a black brother-in-law whom I really enjoy knowing but
who is not reputed to have unusual sexual proclivities. I get tired of
reading stories that are labeled “interracial” in which black guys with
“monster cocks” service white women or white guys screw black “sluts.”
This story takes a completely different (yet sexy and socially
responsible) perspective on interracial sex.
I think you’ll enjoy reading this story. I certainly did.

“Trinity Trilogy Novel 3/14” by Tom Trinity (stbush@iglou.com). This
segment ends with these words: “All right, you guys, what do TWO rubber
bands mean?" I’ll bet if you’re real creative and think real hard you
can figure out what two rubber bands might mean - especially if you’ve
ever had a college roommate.
For those readers who joined us late, the “Trinity Trilogy” stories are
a loosely organized series of 99 stories that were posted by an author
named Tom over a period of several years. Shelby Bush has kept in
touch with this author, who prefers to remain anonymous; and Shelby has
edited and reorganized the stories into the “Trinity Trilogy Novel.”
Shelby has agreed to repost the novel in 14 segments (one segment of
several stories each Saturday), and I am briefly reviewing each segment
as it appears.
The stories generally describe what I’ll call consensual, hedonistic
sex. In each of the segments so far the protagonists (a male and two
females) have had some wild times with each other and with a few
outsiders. The present segment is loosely focused around the
attendance of the trio at science fiction conventions in Chicago and
New Orleans.
In the first story in this installment we witness CB sex with truckers.
From the narrative you might get the impression that the Knights of the
Road like it when two people with handles like Pretty Kitty and Red Hot
Momma first give notice and then flash a whole convoy while the red
airhead passes. Actually, the truckers would consider this to be a
road hazard and would insist that these women cease and desist. At
least that’s what a trucker once told me.
The second story describes sex on a rooftop of a hotel. This story was
very short, very sexy, and very realistic. Rooftop sex can be great,
especially if the roof overlooks something really scenic. The first
time my husband and I ever did it on a rooftop, we had gone there to
finish an argument. We were at a party in the hotel, and he got upset
with me for flirting with another man and I countered with an
accusation that he had been ignoring me. In retrospect neither
accusation was true, but we left the party and went to the roof to
avoid making bigger fools of ourselves. The roof had plants and
benches and chairs; during the day people probably went there to sun
bathe. While we were being unpleasant to each other, we heard another
couple approaching. We moved to the other side of the roof to avoid
detection and to continue our hostilities. A few minutes later we
looked through some plant leaves and saw a young couple making tender
love. We immediately realized our argument was silly and decided that
we could probably also make love ourselves without detection; and we
probably could have, except that a third couple came to the roof. That
final couple just held hands and looked at the lights below and the
stars above, but meanwhile the other couple quickly grabbed their own
clothes and ran to hide when they heard the new couple arriving. This
paragraph is now almost as long as the story I am reviewing; but to
keep it from becoming even longer, I’ll simply say that they surprised
the hell out of us. Even with my lips wrapped snugly around his cock,
my husband managed to keep his cool; and he calmly said to them, “If
you won’t tell, we won’t.” They did their thing; we did ours; and we
never saw them again after we snuck back down to our party. Anyway,
since that night I tend to believe rooftop stories.
The third story is a fantasy about Tom being Captain Kirk of Star Trek
fame. A sweet young humanoid from another planet sucks his joiner and
then mates with him. It’s a different type of story; I found it to be
hilarious but erotic. When his partner gets turned on, she screams,
“I'm budding, I'm budding!" and then “Pollinate me!” shortly before she
climaxes.
In the fourth story, Tom and Candy meet Judy’s mother, who looks like
Dolly Parton and is sexually active and interested in young men. ‘Nuff
said. In the fifth story, it’s Tom’s birthday; and the girls blow out
his candle - and I don’t mean the one on the cake. The fifth and sixth
stories are closely related to each other, and the final line is Candy
standing outside the door of the hotel room and saying, “All right, you
guys, what do TWO rubber bands mean?" As I said at the beginning of
this review, I’ll bet you can figure out what two rubber bands might
mean.

“A Mid Winter Night’s Sex Dream” by Mike Mize. This is a repost from
EBS (an349772@anon.penet.fi). The story describes a man and woman who
go upstairs to their apartment on a cold winter night and make
passionate love. It’s a nice story - nothing exceptional, but a nice
story.

“Office Girl” by Parker (an210088@anon.penet.fi). The college girl has
accepted a boring summer job. Someone from another company offers her
a large amount of money for some survey results. She agrees to the
terms, but she gets caught stealing the information. Either she must
do what her superiors demand or they will report her to the police.
She has become that saddest wretch of a.s.s. - the moral (or immoral)
equivalent of the trapped tenant farmer or coal miner locked into the
company store; she has become a sex slave. The story describes in
detail some creative forms of humiliation to keep the girls ensnared in
what used to be called white slavery.

“Igrayne” by Uther Pendragon (an569889@anon.penet.fi) This author
writes under the pseudonym of the father of King Arthur. It was Uther
Pendragon - not his son Arthur - who established the Round Table on
Merlyn's advice. Uther later found his true heir (Arthur) through the
ole sword-in-the-stone test. In this story, Uther is perceived through
Merlyn’s sorcery by the defenders of the castle to be the their Duke.
And as the Duke he gets to make love to the duchess (the eventual
mother of King Arthur), which indeed he does in excruciating detail.
It’s good to have a sorcerer on your side; in this case Merlyn even
supplied Uther with an herb that had an enchantment against morning
breath. Imagine that.
Through the use of descriptive language and metaphors the story
attempts to create an atmosphere that makes the age of chivalry come
alive. That approach worked; but I personally found the descriptions
of sexual activity to be TOO detailed - almost tedious. I found myself
thinking something like, “Alright, already! Fuck her and get on with
your life!”

“The Surprise” by Charles Kessler (kessler@net-market.com). This is a
story about a man who has been helping his wife expand her limits by
inflicting pain on her to teach her to be submissive. She loves this,
and she is gratified when she buys him some new toys that enable him to
punish and thrill her more effectively. She is also happy to be able
to help him expand his own horizons by fucking him in the ass with a
dildo that she gives him as a present.
Near the beginning of the story Charles says to RoxAnne, “I am going to
spank you now for my pleasure. I want you to be aware of my desire for
you all through dinner. I want to know that some of your attention is
on your bottom to remind you of what awaits you when return." Now,
omitting the first sentence, my husband has probably said just about
this same thing to me. However, instead of beating me with a large
paddle (“within my limits,” of course), he has focused my attention and
has managed to preoccupy our mutual minds by doing other things:
sometimes he gives me flowers or perfume; sometimes I find his unshod
foot moving up my leg while we eat at a restaurant; sometimes he makes
double entendre remarks to the waitress so that only I know what’s
really on his mind. He also loves it when I lean across the table and
notify him that I’m not wearing any panties or when I lick my lips and
describe what I hope to do to him when we get home. My point is that
to get the benefits that Charles describes to RoxAnne the paddle and
the pain are unnecessary.
I think pain COULD remind me of sexual pleasure - but not if it’s
deliberately inflicted by the person who says he loves me. Years ago
my husband and I were playing racquetball together and he accidentally
drilled me with a killshot. Later that evening he told me he was
sorry; I told him to kiss it to make it better; and we had a good ole
time. For the next few days, that pain DID remind me of his love for
me. But if he would have asked me to go and stand by the front wall so
that he could hit me with a killshot to prove his love for me, I would
have told him to fuck himself - in the bad sense of that expression.
My husband has also made love to me with so much vigor that I was sore
afterwards. While that was happening, I screamed for more, even though
I probably knew I’d be sore. Being sore for the next couple of days
actually did turn me on. This is analogous to feeling good when my
stomach growls from hunger at night (because I know I am winning the
battle of the bulge) or when my muscles and lungs hurt during a
physical workout. There’s significant pain involved, but the pain has
been inflicted as a side effect - not to give capricious pleasure to
the person inflicting the pain.
I CAN understand how pain can be sexy in a cultural context different
from my own. For example, in a slave-owning society a woman might be a
lot better off with a man who would beat her and screw her and love her
than with one who would beat her and screw her and not love her. But
the best thing to do with a slave-owning society is to abolish it.
I may be missing something. There are people whom I suspect to be
normal who enjoy deliberately inflicting and receiving fairly extreme
forms of pain. What I have tried to explain in the preceding
paragraphs is the perspective of a “friendly outsider” who simply
cannot understand this. To be perfectly honest, I had a friend once
who was in a relationship that sounded like the one described in this
story; and I suggested that she a counselor. She saw a shrink; then
she confronted her boyfriend; he changed his pattern of behavior; and
they have been together now for nearly ten years. He now gives her
flowers and plays footsie with her. As I understand it, they do a lot
of bondage, but he never intentionally inflicts pain on her.
I do not mean this as a moral lecture, but rather as literary advice.
A very large number of people who follow this newsgroup think the way I
do regarding this issue. If authors of bdsm stories want to make sense
to this broad audience of relatively tolerant readers, they should
develop the plot in such a way as to make the story believable to a
wider audience, not just to people who already buy into the idea that
it is a great idea to inflict pain on somebody in order to make him/her
love the person giving the punishment. To put it another way - a major
problem with this story is that an ordinary reader like myself does not
receive enough information to distinguish the people in this story from
real sickos who ought to get their act together.
Aside from the groundless bdsm, I enjoyed other elements of the story
that some people might consider to be kinky. For example, the man has
a secret longing to have his ass stimulated during sexual intercourse;
and so his lover approaches him with a strap-on dildo and with Ben Wa
balls inserted into her own pussy. If you think spanking a woman to
climax is sexy, you’ll find this story to be even more enjoyable than I
did.

“Bobbie’s Special Half-Time” by The Warthog (linetwo@connect.net). The
guys have gathered to watch the NFL game. Bobbie is serving them beer,
and does she look good! They seem to be guzzling their beer just so
they can ask for more. I should clarify something. The Warthog writes
Gangbang Virgin Stories; but that doesn’t by any means suggest that the
bangee is a virgin - simply that she hasn’t had prior experience with
multiple drunken partners. Bobbie sheds her gangbang virginity status
at half-time. Some of the action is pretty sexy. Bobbie does well,
and her husband is proud of her - even though the action goes well
beyond half-time. I suppose this kind of thing is workable - as long
as you have at least one black friend with a 14-inch cock and as long
as somebody else buys the beer.

Cunningham has to baby-sit for his little sister Joanie, who is not so
little any more. She catches him naked with a hard-on from thinking
about his girlfriend; and she tells him, “Jenny Piccolo said guys like
it if you touch their things. Can I touch yours?" Richie acquiesces,
and they’re off to the races. It turns out that Jenny Piccolo also
showed Joanie how to perform fellatio on a banana. Actually, Richie
discovers that Jenny Piccolo taught Joanie so many interesting things
that he agrees to let Jenny join them the next time they fool around
together. A negative side effect of the whole episode is that coaches
will no longer be able to inspire Richie by saying, “A tie is like
kissing your sister.”

“Feeding Frenzy” by Unknown Author. This is one of those reposts with
the author’s name removed. If anyone knows who wrote this, I’d like to
find out. A guy says to a woman, “Can you imagine how great it would
be, if you did have a lover you could do anything at all with - I mean
anything. No rules, no balking, no looks of disgust or weird judgments,
just a pact, an agreement to say no to nothing? I mean, you could
construct a Magic Kingdom of unnatural acts and playlets. You could
create your own attractions like at Disney World. You could have
Fellatio Land, Ass Lickers of the Caribbean, the Haunted Condom...”
She says OK, and so they get together with a bisexual friend for wild
sex on a regular basis. This is so cheap and tawdry that it’s actually
intriguing.

“Role Reversal” by Unknown Author (Sextales). I need help here. I
found this story and the next among a set of 55 stories that I
downloaded as a zip file from a.s.s. several months ago. The stories
are of generally very high quality; but I have waited for several
months and have seen no additional information about them. They seem
to come from a BBS. A few of the stories have the name Port Coco BBS
or Heart Break Hotel BBS associated with them. I don’t know what to
make of them; and I am reluctant to write detailed reviews if no
readers will have access to these stories. If anyone knows anything
about the Sextales stories, please let me know, so that I can decide
how to treat them.
This story is about a lady who dresses very enticingly to go to a party
in the nearby city. She stops for a hamburger on the way. When she
sees the bulge she has evoked in the pants of the kid who delivers the
food, she says fuck the party and then fucks the kid. It’s short but
pretty sexy stuff.

“Housecleaning” by Warlock (Sextales). You can tell that this story
was written by a guy. “Housecleaning” refers to such tasks as using a
vacuum cleaner, mopping floors, and cleaning toilets. Sexy things like
that. In this story the lady is “washing dishes.” The guy comes up
behind her, and starts fondling her. He quickly gets her attention,
and a sexy interlude follows. As far as I can see, however, he doesn’t
help her actually wash even the first dish.
This is another story from the Sextales zip file that I described in
the review of the preceding story. As I said, I have 55 of these
stories. Unlike this one, most of them do not have authors associated
with them. They appear to be generally short but good - often of the
style and quality that I associate with Damya. If you’d like me to
continue reviewing these stories, I need some more information about
them. If you have any information, please contact me.

*"Caitlin's Tale" by Lysander (Lysander@vnet.net). This story has
recently been reposted as part of the THC archives. It is a historical
romance - in the loose sense of both words. Many of the events are
indeed plausible, but I'm not sure that historians would say that
things really happened quite this way. It seems to me that the author
may be projecting back into a historical context modern notions of
sexual domination and submission. However, even though I'm skeptical
about some of the historical accuracy, I liked the setting. It gave a
rationale other than pure cruelty or petulance for treating a woman
like an object - after all, Caitlin was literally Robert's slave. And
her reaction of loving her tormenter becomes understandable in this
context.
I really don't enjoy stories about mindless sex, but I did enjoy this
one. Talk about mindless sex! In this story we have Caitlin eating
the asshole of her former best friend who has become her mistress (or
maybe it was vice versa), swallowing about a gallon of her friend's
urine while eating her pussy, fucking a whole small army of men either
two or three at a time (depending on how many orifices were available),
getting an enema before a beating and then being punished for crapping
all over the place, taking it in the pussy and then in the ass from one
giant dog before giving the other dog the blow job of its life, and
being bound to a rack while getting fucked with the hilt of a giant
sword before getting really fucked by its owner and everyone else who
happened to be around. And that doesn't even include what the master
himself did to her. I don't want any of this to happen to me; and if I
were on a jury, I would recommend severe (non-sexual) punishment for
people who did this to Caitlin. So why would I enjoy this story?
One reason I enjoyed it was the historical context, which kept me
constantly aware that I was in a fantasy world. I could enjoy it
without succumbing to the feeling that I was actually recommending this
kind of activity. Science fiction sex stories have the same advantage
for me. When stories are more contemporary, I feel inclined to react
to them more realistically - which means I am inclined to dislike what
is brutal or demeaning. I think a lot of people react this way. Other
people have different ways to differentiate between reality and
fantasy. (If you don't have any way to make this distinction, you
should probably find one.)
A second reason is that the author takes advantage of the historical
context to make the story interesting as well as sexy. I remember
criticizing a story called "The Tugboat" a while back for failing to
integrate the sex with the context. That story story just had lots of
sex for no apparent reason and with little relation to the things that
would have been unique to that environment. Lysander avoids that
mistake. We're pretty much constantly aware of the context, and that
makes the story more riveting.
While I found parts of the story to be sexually arousing, I found more
parts to be just interesting. My reaction was often, "Yeah, I guess
that would be possible." I truly believe that the author had to be
laughing while he wrote parts of this story: "I wonder if I can make
them believe this!"
This tale reminded me in some ways of the first great American
historical romance, "The Last of the Mohicans." That novel was quite
popular among rich, stylish ladies in Europe, who thought it would be
"romantic" to go the American West with the "noble savages." The
actual realities of the American west were quite different from these
fantasies. Mark Twain wrote a delightful essay on "Fennimore Cooper's
Literary Offenses," and it would be possible to find even more
egregious offenses in this story. But it was still a pretty good
story.
