Chapter 11

The sun was coming up when Peggy finally went to sleep. I eased out of bed and took a fast shower and went down to the hotel lobby. The lobby was almost deserted because it was so early. I asked the desk clerk if she knew where any day spas were and she wrote down the address of several. She told me that all of those on the list were first class. I asked what the best restaurant in Denver was and she told me Tante Louise, hands down. She said that reservations were booked weeks in advance but that they always accommodated the hotel for special guests. When I asked if she would make reservations for three for eight o'clock she picked up the phone. Within minutes she turned to me and told me that I had reservations for three at eight o'clock. I pulled out my wallet and handed the woman two hundred dollar bills for her help. I knew that I would never have been able to get those reservations on my own.

I got a cup of coffee at the coffee shop across the street and took my time drinking it. Denver was starting to wake up. Soon the streets started filling with people.

I made my way back to the hotel and I let myself into the room. Peggy was still sleeping. Brenda had opened the connecting door and I could see her moving about in the other room. I gave a polite knock and when I saw that she knew I was there I walked into her room. I pulled the door shut so that Peggy could get some sleep.

Brenda turned to me, "I'd better get back to my place. I have to find out if I still have a job."

"Brenda sit down, I want to talk to you. I don't know if Peggy told you about her feelings after the doctor told her that she couldn't have children but I've really been worried about her. That's when I hit on the idea of trying to find you. I've been so worried that she might hurt herself that I make sure that she's never alone. I love that woman and if anything ever happened to her I'm afraid that I'd fold. We have a very large house. I was wondering if you would go back with us and stay with Peggy for a while. Hell, you could stay forever if you want. That is, of course, if there's nothing here that would prevent you from coming with us."

I reached into my jacket pocket and pulled out a plane ticket, "I was hoping that you'd say yes. I even bought a plane ticket for you in case you agreed to come back with us."

Brenda looked at me for a long time with tears in her eyes, "Are you real or am I dreaming. Of course I'll come with you and Peggy. I have nothing here that would prevent me from leaving. I never want to lose Peggy again."

Peggy opened the door and sleepily walked in the room, "What's going on? Did I miss anything?"

Brenda smiled and I walked to the phone and ordered breakfast from room service. I had no idea how hungry they were and I think that I went a little over board. There was still a lot of food left when they said they had enough.

"What are we going to do today?" Peggy asked.

I grabbed her by the arm and pushed her toward the bedroom, "You've got a full day ahead of you lady. I have a list of the best day spas in Denver and I expect you and your sister to avail yourselves of every service that they offer. I would advise you to make an appointment at a beauty salon for both of you. We're going to the best restaurant in Denver tonight and I'm sure that both of you will want to be appropriately dressed; you'll have to pick up a some clothes for tonight."

Brenda piped in, "Tante Louise? No way. You can't get reservations there unless you know someone."

I smiled, "See, you just have no idea how important your brother-in-law is. You two better get moving. I expect you both back here at six so that we can get ready. In the meantime I have a few things to take care of."

I walked out of the hotel suite and went down to the lobby. I asked at the desk if there was a room that I could use for a private conversation and the desk clerk directed me to an office behind the counter. It's amazing what a nice tip will accomplish.

I called Bob Cassidy and explained about the farm that belonged to Peggy and Brenda but was being occupied by her uncle. Bob told me that he would find out all that he could about the place. I had put a few obstacles in Bob's path. I didn't know where, in Idaho, the farm was and I didn't really know if the uncle's last name was the same as Peggy's maiden name or not; Peggy had told me that her uncle was her father's brother though. I wanted to find out if the uncle had sold the farm, lost it because of taxes or what. After the job that Bob Cassidy did for me finding Brenda I was sure that he would be able to find the farm.

I spent the rest of the day getting a hair cut, ordering a limousine, buying a suit and getting flowers for Brenda and Peggy. I got back to the room about four and took my shower and dressed. I went down to the lobby and went into the lounge and ordered a coke. I sure didn't want alcohol on my breathe when I picked them up.

A little after six I called the room. Peggy answered the phone and asked where I was. I told her to call me when they were ready and then come down to the lobby. She giggled and hung up. I was a little worried about that giggle.

About seven-thirty my cell phone rang and Peggy said that they were on their way down. I went to the elevator lobby and watched the elevator come down. The door opened and the two of them stepped out with huge grins. I couldn't speak. They were both so beautiful. If I didn't cause every man in Denver to be insanely jealous tonight they were all dead; or at least they were all blind.

Peggy took my arm and motioned for Brenda to take the other arm. She asked if I got a taxi and I told her it was waiting. As we walked through the lobby I was conscious of everyone watching the two women. When they saw the limo, both of the women gasped.

We got into the limo and the driver pulled away from the curb. Peggy was her old self and Brenda looked radiant. Peggy had picked out stunning evening wear for the both of them. When the limo pulled in front of the restaurant the driver jumped out and opened the door. We walked into the restaurant, turning heads. We were immediately seated. I ordered a bottle of Champaign for us and the women toasted me; the man that had brought them together again.

After dinner we went back to the limo. I asked the driver to drive around for a while and we just enjoyed each other's company. I was in seventh heaven. I had a beautiful woman snuggled on each side of me. We drove for a long time before we asked the driver to take us back to the hotel.

When we got back to the room Brenda asked if we lived like this all of the time. I told her only when we had special people that we wanted to impress. We sat around and talked for a long time. I was the first one to head for the bedroom.

Peggy followed me, "Wait for me. I want to talk to you."

She went back to the suite where Brenda was and I heard them talking. In a few minutes she came into our room and began to get undressed. She crawled into bed and cuddled up against me and held me for a few minutes.

"This was a wonderful day. Thank you. Brenda told me that you asked her to come back to Phoenix with us. Thank you again. I'd like her to be with us. I never want her to be separated from me again. You're a very kind and thoughtful man. I don't know what I've done to deserve you. I think Brenda thinks you're special too. I'll have to keep my eye on you two."

We made love much more passionately than we had in a long time. We held each other afterward and finally went to sleep in each other's arms.

In the morning I woke up alone in the bed. I heard Brenda and Peggy talking in a low voice in the other room. I stayed in bed for while to give them some time alone with each other. When I finally couldn't hold my bladder anymore I got out of bed and went to the bathroom. When I walked into the other bedroom they both stopped talking like they were sharing a deep, dark secret.

They had ordered breakfast and I poured my self a cup of coffee and buttered a slice of toast that had gotten hard. Just then my cell phone rang. I looked at it and saw that it was Bob Cassidy. I excused myself and went in the other room and pushed the door shut. Bob told me that he had found the farm. It had been easy because the uncle had the same last name as Peggy's maiden name. The uncle still lived on the farm and the farm would be sold at the end of the year if the back taxes were not paid. The uncle hadn't paid taxes in two years. I thanked him and told him to that I would call him later that day and let him know what I wanted to do.

When I went back into the room I said, "Sorry, It was my girlfriend."

Peggy looked at Brenda, "Do the vets here in Denver neuter large dogs."

I walked over to her and put my arm around her shoulder, "That was the private detective that I hired to find Brenda. I asked him to locate your farm and see if it was still in one piece. Your uncle is still living on the farm. The taxes haven't been paid in two years and you're going to lose it if the taxes aren't paid by the end of the year. Do either of you have any intention of moving back to the farm or even back to Idaho?"

They both shook they're heads and I continued, "If you two will give me power of attorney I'll get the farm back for you. You two decide if you want to sell it or keep it. It's up to you two."

Almost as one they said that they wanted to sell it. Brenda chipped in that she never wanted to see that place again.

We packed our bags for the flight back to Phoenix that afternoon accompanied by Peggy's sister, Brenda. Brenda said that she had nothing at her room that she wanted and that she needed to make a clean and total break with Denver. Peggy promised to buy her all of the clothes that she would need for her new life.
