Chapter 18
Ed turned to Hy, "I'm going over to see Mrs. Bynum. She also an innocent in this mess and I feel she has a right to know about what's going to explode at the news conference tomorrow. I guess she's going to windup paying for her husband's sins."
Ed left the apartment after getting assurances from Hy that he would stay with Ann and Betty until he had to leave for the news conference. He knew that Hy would be on the phone with his publisher before Ed left the parking lot. Ed knew that most of the story would be written before the news conference tomorrow. He took his van to where he had one of his cars parked and drove to the Bynum house. As Ed pulled into the driveway the lights came on automatically. Ed pulled in front of the house and shut off the engine.
The first floor of the house was dark and a light was on in an upstairs room.
Ed rang the doorbell and a light came on in the hallway of the house. The front porch light came on and Ed saw a shadow pass over the peephole and he knew that Katherine was checking to see who was at the door at this time of night. Ed heard Katherine call for him to wait while she turned off the alarm.
Katherine opened the door. She was dressed for bed and was wearing a robe over a silk, floor length nightgown. She held the door open and smiled at him.
"Well, to what do I owe this visit?" she asked, "is this a business call or a social visit."
Ed smiled at her suggestive comment, "Maybe a little of both. The case is coming to a head and you're going to be right in the middle of it. Can I come in and talk?"
Katherine let him in and led him out on the patio. The night air was pleasant and she asked it wanted a drink. Ed told her that he would have whatever she was having and she went back into the house and returned with two rocks glasses filled with Scotch on the rocks.
Ed took a sip of the Scotch before he spoke, "The police have the murderer of your husband. Sam Hornsby killed George. George was taunting him about drugging Ann and raping her along with several of his friends. Sam said that George was on drugs and he was waving a gun around and when he grabbed it the gun went off and George was hit. Sam took the gun and threw it in the river and didn't tell Ann."
Katherine took a sip of her drink and stared out into the back yard. It was several minutes before she spoke.
"George developed a liking for exotic drugs," she said slowly, "This was the start of problems between us. One night he laughed at me and told me that he only married me because I was wealthy. He said that I was one of the worst women that he ever had in bed. After that I made sure that none of my money was available to him and he had to support himself. He did fairly well and he lived here, so he had few expenses. George always found a way to make Horizon pay for things."
Katherine sipped her drink and looked at Ed, "Do you think that I am pretty? I have been beating myself for years after he told me that."
Ed looked at her, "Katherine, you are one of the most beautiful women that I have ever seen. I just wish that I had found you before George did. I would have fought him for you."
Katherine smiled and looked down, "Thank you, I hope you mean that. I don't have much self-worth these days."
Ed pulled his chair closer and took her hand in his. She clasped his hand tightly and smiled at him.
"There's a lot more to this story," Ed went on, "Do you feel that you can handle some bad news?'
Katherine nodded and Ed told her about George skimming the big accounts and sweetening the accounts of his friends. Ed didn't let her hand go and she did not attempt to pull her hand away.
"I'm afraid that your bank accounts will be frozen after the funds find out what he did. You are going to be right in the middle of this mess. I don't see any way that you can not be brought into the middle of all this."
She took another sip of her drink; "George has a lot of money in his bank accounts. I wondered how he was amassing so much money. He often bragged that he would have more money than me one day. Years ago I opened bank accounts that I was signatory to but were not in my name. I don't have any money worries and I think that most of my money can't be touched. Right now I am worried about Ann. I am going to get Sam the best lawyer that I can. I can't let her suffer for what George did. It sounds like he might have a case for self defense."
Ed told her about the State Police sealing the Horizon offices and about the news conference tomorrow. She asked if the men who had raped Betty and Ann would be charged and Ed told her that they would be charged. Commander Rice had indicated that the men would be arrested this night and would be in jail before morning. Katherine had tears in her eyes for the wives of the men.
"Are you going to be at the news conference?" she asked.
"Yes, I wouldn't miss that for the world," Ed replied.
Katherine stood up, "I have to call my lawyer and get him working on Sam's defense."
Katherine walked into the house and Ed sat and sipped his drink. After about 30 minutes she came out with 2 more drinks and sat down. She handed Ed his drink and sat staring straight ahead in silence. Ed took her hand again and she held his hand tightly again. It was about 30 minutes before she spoke.
"Will you stay with me tonight? I don't want to be alone tonight. I don't want to think about the mess that I've made of my life.
Ed stood up and reached for her. She stood up and came into his arms. Ed held her for a long tome and neither of them said a word.
Finally Ed looked into her eyes, "You don't have any reason to beat yourself over this. You can't blame yourself for what George did. You're a beautiful woman and any man would be proud to have you. You have no idea how great you feel in my arms.'
Katherine held him tighter and she put her head on his shoulder, "Will you stay with me tonight?"
Ed kissed her and she responded with a passion that told him that she missed human company as much as he did. She took his hand and led him into the house. She turned on the alarm and led him up the stairs. As they went into the bedroom she turned to him.
"I've been told that I'm not much good in bed. Are you sure that you want me?"
Ed kissed her and she kissed him until they had to break for air.
She led him into the bathroom off of the bedroom and they undressed each other in silence. Katherine adjusted the shower and took his hand and pulled him into the shower. The water cascaded over them and they washed each other and kissed and caressed each other. Katherine and Ed got out of the shower and dried each other. She took his hand and led him to her bed. She dropped his hand and stood, allowing him to see her. Ed pulled her to him and kissed her hard and then laid her back on the bed. He crawled in bed and lay beside her and pulled her to him. He kissed her and his kisses were like fire to her. He kissed her neck and moved down to her breast. She gasped as he pulled her nipple into this mouth and moaned as he lightly raked his teeth over her nipple. She pulled him tightly to her as an orgasm shook her. Ed held her until she quieted and started kissing down her body until he reached her mound. He licked her and pulled her clit into his mouth. She grabbed his head and pulled him against her as a second orgasm sent her into heaven. She pulled him up to her and guided him into her. As he entered her she kissed him deeply and rose to meet him. Ed moved into her slowly, allowing her to get used to his size and then started thrusting into her. She rose to meet his thrusts and she urged him on with the intensity of her passion. Katherine cried out as another orgasm took hold of her entire body and Ed emptied himself into her.
They lay together joined for several minutes until Ed started to soften. Ed rolled off of her and pulled her to him. She moved to him and put her head against his shoulder.
"I never knew that sex could be like that," she said breathlessly, "I have never had orgasms like that before. Where have you been all of my life?"
Ed smiled, "You are one fabulous woman. I never knew sex could be like that either."
Katherine stretched up to him and kissed him and their passion grew until they joined again with an intensity that made a mockery of their first coupling. Ed thrust into her and she thrust back at him urging him to go faster and harder. When Katherine's orgasm hit her she clutched him to her and held him until the intense waves of pleasure subsided. Ed continued after she released him and he emptied himself into her again as she experienced another shattering orgasm.
They laid side-by-side trying the catch their breath. Ed turned to her and saw that she had tears in her eyes.
"What's wrong?' he asked, "Did I hurt you?"
Katherine smiled, "No dummy, I'm just so happy I don't know if I can stand it. If I had some chain, I would chain you to the bed so you could never get away."
Ed laughed and pulled her to him. They kissed, talked, caressed and made love until dawn and both were glowing. At 6 o'clock Ed told her that he had to get ready to go to the news conference. He asked her if she would like to go and she pulled him to her.
"I'm not going to let you out of my sight," she said, "If any woman even looks at you, she'll die."
They took a shower together and the shower consisted mostly of the both of them holding each other with the hot water cascading over them. Katherine broke away from him and allowed him to get out of the shower and get dressed. She went into the bedroom and got ready to go with him. At the front door she held him.
"I think you know where I live now," she said, "Do you think you could find your way back?"
Ed smiled, "I think you may have started something, I hope won't be sorry."
Katherine kissed him softly, "I was hoping you'd say something like that."
