The Millennium Bug Chapter 12

Twice the Fun

By El Gato

I went to their apartment on Saturday, arriving a few minutes

early. Faith met me at the door.

'Hello Mr. Sifreson, I'm Faith.' I took her proffered hand. 'Dee

will be out in a moment.'

She appeared calm, but I could sense her broadcasting a nervous

excitement when I held her hand. Twin empaths! Faith was trying

to hold her emotions closely in check, 'I'm pleased to meet you,

Faith. Call me Robert or Bob, if you will.'

She showed me into the living room of their apartment, and

motioned for me to sit. I took a seat on a well-worn couch. Faith

sat on the couch, at the other end.

'Uhm, Dee said she met you at the Center yesterday.'

Destiny came bouncing out of a bedroom from behind us. 'Yes, I

did, sister mine.' She came and sat next to me on the couch, and

looked from Faith to me. 'At first she wouldn't believe I had met

you, and when I said you wanted to meet us today she almost

fainted.' Smiling, she turned to her sister.

Faith was blushing, slightly. 'I did not! Dee just surprised me,

that's all. I mean, you're the owner of the company and all. Why

would you want to meet us today?'

I gave her my best disarming smile. 'That's a fair question,

Faith. I wanted to meet you and Destiny away from work because I

could sense something about your sister yesterday. And I wanted

to meet you to see if it runs in the family.' They exchanged a

worried look. 'Don't worry; your secret is safe with me. It does

run in the family, doesn't it Faith?'

Faith had turned a little pale at my question, but Destiny

answered. 'We don't know what you're talking about. I thought you

were a nice man when I met you yesterday, now I just want you to

leave!' She rose and walked towards the door. I could feel her

trying to influence me to go away.

I smiled at her, and motioned for her to come back to the couch.

'Please, Destiny. I'm not here to hurt either of you. Actually,

I'm here to ask you if you would like to meet my family.' I

turned to Faith, who was now staring wide-mouthed at me. 'So how

about it, would you like to come to New Mexico for a while? I'll

take care of any arrangements that need to be made.' Both women

stared at me in shock, unable to speak for the moment.

Faith was the first to answer. 'But why? I mean, if you know our

*secret* like you say...'

'Faith! What are you...!'

Faith shot her sister a glance. 'Quiet, Dee. I could tell you

were trying to get him to leave, and I'll bet Mr. Sifreson could

too; so let's hear him out.' She turned back to me as her sister

took a seat in a chair. 'Am I right?'

'Yes, I could tell. It won't have an influence on me, one way or

another; but I could tell.' I turned to Destiny. 'You were caught

off-guard, and were trying to protect yourself and your sister.

Protecting your family is a noble thing, and is to be admired.' I

could still feel her distrust, even across the room, but her

curiosity was starting to win. 'You asked the reason why I wanted

to find out more about you. The answer is simple. If I'm going to

bring you into my family, I need to know if you will fit in.' I

felt a jolt of surprise from both of them, and then they stopped

broadcasting.

Both women were looking from me to the other, and I wondered if

they were telepathic like other twins were supposed to be.

Destiny got up and knelt beside me, and then took my hand. 'You

mean you were thinking of marrying me?' I could feel her mixed

emotions strongly when she touched me.

'Actually, I had thought of marrying you both.' Then I smiled. 'A

little vain of me, I guess. What do you think?'

Destiny looked in my face, then jumped up and threw her arms

around my neck. I felt her relief wash over me, and hugged her

back. Faith moved over next to me, and touched my leg.

'Do you really mean it?' I could just see her past Destiny's

hair. 'You would marry us both?'

Destiny pulled back and sat next to me on the arm of the couch,

looking intently at my face. 'It is conditional, but yes.'

Destiny asked. 'Conditional? What are the conditions?' The

curtain had dropped on her emotions, again.

I took both their hands. 'That's why I want you both to come to

New Mexico with me. Meet Laura and Mei Li, and see if you like

them.'

'And see if they like us, as well.' Faith frowned.

'Yes. If we are going to be a family, we have to start out with

just liking one another.' I turned from Faith to Destiny as I

spoke. 'Both of you are very attractive, but I know nothing of

your personalities. My instincts tell me to not let you get away,

and I've come to trust my instincts.' I smiled. 'To be safe,

however, we will get to know more about one another before making

any final decision.'

Destiny stole a glance at her sister, some unheard information

passing between them. Then she was intent on my eyes. 'I'm sorry

about trying to make you go away. My sister and I have been

worried someone would discover our hidden talent, and would want

to exploit it. Since you already know about it, aren't you

worried we would use it to influence your family to like us?'

My eyes stayed on hers. 'We have to start out with just liking

one another. Building on that should be trust, and I'm going to

show my trust by bringing you to meet my family. After you meet

them I think you will like them. You truly have nothing to fear.

You don't have to make a decision right now. Let's spend the

afternoon together and see what you think after that. OK?'

Faith and Destiny then moved in and both hugged me. After they

moved back, I asked; 'Are you ladies hungry? I'm past ready for

some lunch, myself.'

We went to eat at a small Italian restaurant that had fresh

calamari. The rest of the afternoon was spent seeing various

sights around San Diego, finally ending up at the zoo.

We talked as we walked, and we exchanged information about our

lives. The Bug had taken their father when they were only eight,

their mother grieved still over his death. They first knew of

their talent shortly after puberty, and decided to hide it from

everyone. The twins decided they would stay together to help each

other for as long as they could. The collection center seemed the

perfect place to work and sparingly use their talent. They had

both received individual proposals from clients, but I was the

first to suggest that they both marry at the same time.

After eating a late supper, I returned them to their apartment.

When they turned to me at the door, I took their hands and kissed

each in the palm in turn. 'I'll call in the morning to get your

decision. Sleep on it, and let me know if you are willing to take

a chance with me.'

They looked at each other, and I was tempted to try to see if

they were 'speaking' to one another, but didn't. They released my

hands, and first Faith, then Destiny, came into my arms and

kissed me, softly saying 'Goodnight.'

Back in my hotel room, I called home.

Laura picked up, and got Mei Li on the vid with her. We exchanged

pleasantries for a while, and then she asked, 'OK, now what are

you doing still in San Diego?'

I chuckled. 'Well, now that I've got you both on the line, I'll

tell you.'

I told them about meeting Faith and Destiny, and told what I'd

learned about them so far. (Leaving out their 'talent', that is.)

I thought that I might be bringing them home to meet on Sunday or

Monday if things worked out.

Laura and Mei Li exchanged a glance, making me think that maybe

it wasn't telepathy; maybe it's just a female thing. Then Laura

spoke, 'Robert, try to bring them home Sunday. We really do want

to meet them, they sound interesting. Besides, Steve wants to

talk to you about something he's found on Monday.'

'OK, I'll get their answer tomorrow, and come home. Love you,

both.'

After signing off the vid, I logged onto my email account and got

an encrypted message from Steve. He didn't have all the details,

but knew that Senator Hollman was up to something. On Monday he

would have more information, and we could decide what to do with

it then.

I contacted Cutter Flying Service to ferry my plane to the San

Diego Airport. I contacted the airline and canceled my flight

reservations, and then the local FBO to arrange to meet the pilot

from Cutter. Maria was at home and I did not want to disturb her

weekend, so I left her a voicemail on her line at work. Going to

bed early, I set my alarm to get up at 5: 30 AM.

In the morning I called the local FBO to make sure the plane

would be ready by 2:00 that afternoon. I logged on and checked my

email one more time, and sent Laura a text mail to her cell phone

with details on when I should be arriving at the airport. By the

time all my preparations to leave were done, it was time to call

the twins and get their answer.

I used the vid in the hotel room, and Destiny picked up on the

first ring. 'Robert? Hi! Wait just a second, Faith's coming to

talk with you, too.'

Destiny watched her sister approach, then turned to watch me as

she slid in to sit next to her. Faith smiled at the sister, then

at me. 'Hi! I hope you slept better than Dee and I.' Destiny

looked OK, but I could see the lack of sleep combined with

existing tension on her sisters face.

'Thank you, Faith. I slept well. Sorry to hear I caused you a

sleepless night.' I said gently.

It seems that Faith had been chosen as spokesperson. 'Destiny and

I talked quite a long time after you left.' Faith looked at her

sister, who was smiling back at her. 'We even called mom to talk

over how it would affect her, if we moved to another state.' She

looked back at me, took a big breath; and smiled. 'Mom reminded

us of what she taught us. To remember that life gives you both

opportunities and stumbling blocks, and to trust our instincts to

tell us which is placed before us.' She reached over and took her

sisters hand. 'Destiny and I talked a long time after that, and

we believe this is an opportunity. A big one. We would be honored

to go to meet your family, sir.'

I chuckled at the formal address. 'I'm pleased you trust me

enough to take that risk, but please call me Robert or Bob. OK?'

Both girls smiled and nodded. 'I'll check out of here and come

pick you up for a quick brunch. We need to be on the plane by

2:30 PM for me to stay on schedule. I hope that's all right.

OK?'

Destiny smiled and spoke up. 'Oh yes, that's perfect! I told

Faith we needed to pack some lat night after we made up our

minds. That's partly why we missed out on some sleep. Besides, we

knew we could always take a nap on the plane.'

'Alright then, I'll be over in forty-five minutes.'

Both were smiling when Faith reached over to terminate the call.

'See you soon, Robert.'

Destiny insisted that she cook us brunch when I arrived at their

apartment. After we ate, they took turns sitting with me and

talking while the other put the last touches together for the

trip to New Mexico. Faith sat next to me and talked, watching my

face intently the entire time. Destiny snuggled up in my lap,

exchanging hugs frequently as we talked softly to each other. The

morning went quite fast, and their luggage was finally loaded

next to mine in the car. Destiny sat next to me on the short trip

to the airport, but Faith kept up in the conversation without

letting her sister monopolize me.

The arrival at the private side of the airport caused a bit of

excitement, since Faith and Destiny had only flown commercial

before. The pilot from Cutter and the rental pickup driver met us

at the plane. I signed for the car as the girls started unloading

luggage. As the car moved off, I went to help load the plane.

Destiny was very excited. 'Wow! This is so cool! We get to fly in

our own personal plane!' Faith just watched on with wide eyes.

'Yes, it is great. I enjoy flying quite a lot.' I got their

attention. 'Wait here for just a second, I'm going to help load

the luggage on the plane.'

After loading the plane, I looked over the checklist for the

plane; and did a walk-around with Janet, the pilot from Cutter.

Introductions were quickly made as we boarded and Faith and

Destiny got in their seats. Both took a window seat to be able to

look out. I left Janet to the final checklist as the ground crew

prepared to pull the blocks out for our departure, and went back

to the cabin.

'We're going to be taking off in a few minutes, so be sure to

buckle up.' Both girls were looking at me, so I explained. 'I'm

going to be in the cockpit during take-off, but I'll come back

and join you after we reach altitude. OK?' Both nodded, so I went

back and buckled into the pilots' chair. Take-off was uneventful,

and I let Janet take over while I went back into the cabin.

I sat in a chair just ahead of the girls, and rotated it around

to face them. 'Now we can sit and talk during the flight.' I

smiled and we started talking, again.

As we talked my feeling that this was the right decision kept

getting stronger. While we had a lot of likes and opinions in

common, there were just enough differences to make it

interesting. Too soon as is the case with such occurrences, Janet

rang that we were approaching descent into Albuquerque. I was

about to make my apologies and return to the cockpit when Faith

asked me if I was a pilot.

I turned to face her, 'Yes, I am. This is our family plane, but I

also use it for business flights from time to time. Normally I

would have had to stay in the pilots' seat, but since Janet

ferried the plane to me we could talk while letting her fly us

back.' I nodded to them both. 'Excuse me, but I need to go and

call Laura before we land.'

After getting secured in the seat I called Laura with our arrival

time. She and Mei Li would meet us at Cutter Flying Service, then

we would all go out to eat. We were cleared to land with no

delays, and I breathed a sigh of relief as we rolled out, happy

to be home.
