I woke up during the night a couple of times when first Susan then Sonya were taking my blood pressure and pulse but fell back to sleep instantly. I woke the next morning while Sonya was taking my blood pressure. I opened my eyes to see her beautiful face. I smiled at her and she smiled back then leaned down to give me a sweet kiss. She nodded her head toward the other bed where June lay sleeping. I told Sonya I had to pee. She said, so go do it. Sometime during the night she had removed the I.V. I got up and went to the in-room bathroom. She followed and watched while I drained the lizard. It was just like being back home while growing up with them. I washed my hands and face then said that I needed to shave and brush my teeth. She told me to get back on the bed and she would be right back. She returned with a tray and put it on the bedside table.
"Go brush your teeth then come back." Sonya said.
I brushed my teeth, again with a witness, then went back to sit in bed. Sonya took my gown off my shoulders and put a towel on my chest. She put a hot towel over my face then began whipping up shaving cream with a brush in a cup. She pulled the hot towel from my face then lathered me up. Then very gently and very thoroughly Sonya shaved me with a safety razor. When she was sure my face was smooth she washed off the excess shaving cream then dried my face. She pulled the table away from me then put my gown back on me. She sat on the bed rubbing my face with her hand then leaned over me to kiss me thoroughly.
"What's with all the passion, Sonya." I asked with a red face.
"Oh Chuck, you know Susan and I love you so much." She sighed. "We both wish you weren't our brother. You would be our perfect man. You know you're never going to get rid of us. We're gonna follow you around like love sick little girls for the rest of our lives."
"You guys need a life." I said. "Christ, you both have had some very nice boy friends and I even thought you were going to get engaged to that one guy. What happened?"
"He wasn't you Chuck. If he would have been more like you, honest, sweet, open, gentle, I might have kept him but he wasn't. It's just tough for Susan and I to find a guy we like. If we ever find the right one, we plan on keeping him and sharing him. There probably won't be two of them at the same time." Sonya took a breath. "But if this little Sunshine doesn't cart you off, Susan and I are gonna do it. And it won't make any difference whether you're our brother or not. Our only problem is the twins. We'll have to share you with the little brats."
"I don't blame you Sonya." June said.
We both turned toward June. I was red faced being caught in such an intimate conversation with my sister but Sonya wasn't. She just smiled at June. "You didn't make it any better June. Telling me about how you three ladies were pampering our guy. I'm just glad he finally has some loving companionship."
"Let me get us some coffee. June, there is a toothbrush and paste in the bathroom for you. I'll be right back." Sonya said then left.
June got up, gave me a quick kiss then went to the bathroom. While she was gone, Sonya came in with a nurse or assistant or something with coffee and four trays filled with some good looking breakfast.
June came out of the bathroom then came back over to me and gave me a sizzling morning kiss. "Now that my mouth taste better, thought I should remind you that I'm around. Watching your sister shave you made me crazy horny. That was about the most sensual shave I'm ever seen."
"Oh it wasn't that bad June." Sonya said.
"Couldn't tell by me, you were purring over him worse than Sunshine." June said.
At that moment Dr. Wilson came into the room. "Ah breakfast with one of my favorite twins." He said looking for Sonya's name tag. "Susan?" He asked.
"Sonya." She said grinning.
"Thanks for inviting me. Ah, you are Mrs. Johnson right?" He said indicating June. "Are you related to the twins and her brother here?"
"No, just his neighbor and friend." June said.
"Well Mr. Johnson, or can I call you Chuck. It's nice to finally meet the mythical person of the twins' dreams. You sure have set the bar high for the prospective suitors these girls have." The doc said.
"Call me Chuck. It's easier." I said.
"I'm Jake. My Dad has always called me Jake the snake like the quarterback, but Mom harasses him about it constantly wanting the Jake to be something regal. I'm named after my Father. I was also named after my Grandfather who was and is still a scoundrel. At least I have a normal name, as normal as a Junior can be." Laughed the doc.
"How's my daughter?" June asked.
"She is great." Said the doc. "She is being prepped to come up here right now. Before she gets here though, I have to warn you. We have her head pretty wrapped up. Besides the bandages from the lacerations we have her eyes covered at this time. The oculist and neurologist will be up after a bit and have another look at her. I think she's going to be fine."
Chuck, I just wanted to tell you that all your x-rays are clear. You don't have any broken ribs but you probably have bruised yourself pretty good. Now that we know that you didn't suffer a severe concussion you can resume normal activities after a day or so of rest.
We ate and chatted about the twins a few things. Jake said he had to leave but would be back when the other doctors came. Sonya cleared away the trays then June and Sonya changed the sheets on the bed next to me.
A nurse came in and propped the door open then pulled in a gurney that held Sunshine. She was laying flat with her head and right arm wrapped and an I.V. in her right wrist. They slid her into the bed then arranged her gown and the sheets around her. Sonya took over and took her blood pressure and pulse and temperature with one of those ear probes. When she was satisfied she asked. "Sunshine, do want to sit up a little. I can raise the bed so you can partially sit up."
"Oh please, that would be nice. Who's here, I can tell there are more people here. Is that you Chuck? I can smell you. Mom, you're here to. Who are you nurse. You kind of smell and sound like Chuck?" Sunshine said.
"I'm here Sunny, in the bed next to you." I said.
"Are you alright Chuck. They said you were all right but I couldn't be with you and didn't know." Sunshine whined.
"I'm fine." I said.
June then took Sunshine's left hand and almost cried, "I'm right here baby, I'm so glad you're going to be okay."
"So who is this person that smells like Chuck?" Sunshine asked again.
"I'm Chuck's sister and now your nurse. So you best behave." Sonya said.
"Oh goody. Chuck has a sister. I'm Sunshine Johnson and I'm very happy to meet you. What is your name?" She asked excitedly.
"Sonya. I have a twin named Susan who will be here any minute. She is also a nurse and will help take care of you and Chuck. Then there are Chuck's other sisters, Joey and Joy, another set of twins." Sonya said all this gently.
"Wow, four sisters, two sets of twins. Chuck you are so lucky. You didn't tell me." Sunshine wondered.
"It just never came up, Sunny. We have always been talking about everything else." I answered.
"You know baby, we never have given Chuck much of a chance to talk about himself. But then he doesn't talk about himself anyway." June said.
"That's just like him." Offered Sonya. "He never talks about himself. And with four sisters around he didn't have a chance to talk much anyway." We all laughed at that.
We chatted a while and let Sunshine lay back and snooze. Agnes came in then Susan came in shortly afterward. Even though Sonya had just finished doing all the checks, Susan did a thorough check on me then turned her attention to Sunshine.
"You're not Sonya. I bet you're Susan." Sunshine said.
"How did you know?" Susan asked stunned.
"You smelled like Chuck but different than Sonya. I may not be able to see, but I can smell pretty good." Sunshine stated. "Hi Grandma, I heard you come in too."
"Hi Sunshine. Guess I can't give you a hug but let me kiss your cheek. You're all wrapped up. I should get a bow so you would look like a present." Agnes said with a tear in her eye.
"I can be a present for Chuck." Sunshine said happily. "Kind of a broken toy though. But I'll heal. I can't tell but I think they cut a lot of my hair off."
"You sound great Sunshine. It doesn't sound like you have much of a concussion at all." I said.
"I'm not sure what a concussion feels like but my head only hurts where they stitched it up." Sunshine said. "When we had the accident, I hit my head on the door really hard but all those air bags kept me pretty safe. Then the car that hit us hit me on the head and that's what cut me. The noise was terrible and I was so afraid you were hurt Chuck. I wiggled around until I could hold you but my arm wouldn't come with me. I don't remember too much after that."
Sonya and Susan both had tears in their eyes and both went to Sunshine and tried to hug her but ended up just petting her. Agnes and June saw the emotion the twins were showing toward Sunshine and teared up too.
"You two love Chuck just like I do don't you." Sunshine asked.
"We do." They said simultaneously.
Damn, now I was choking up too. All this emotion was getting the best of me.
Agnes saw my dilemma and said. "Chuck, I have my attorney doing some things that will begin the process of taking care of your car and the cost of the hospital for you and Sunshine. I hope you don't mind that I took care of it."
"Thanks Aggy," I said. "Glad you did that as I'm pretty slow on stuff like that. We'll have to find out what needs to be done about the T-bird."
"Oh no, not your Thunderbird. I love that car. I'll miss not getting to ride in it. It needed to be bigger so Sonya and I both can ride in it easier together." Susan moaned.
"Wait till you see what's in Chuck's garage." June said.
"What's that?" Said Sonya.
"You'll have to come to my house and see." I said. "I've asked you both a couple of times already and nobody comes over. Too bad no one wants to come to the country club for dinner with me. Nobody but my neighbors and boss, that is."
"You're right Chuck." Said Sonya the rapid fire twin speak. Then Susan, "We wanted to come to see your new house but didn't know whether we would be as welcome there." Then Sonya, "You know how we tease you and we didn't know whether you were going to be okay with that." Then Susan, "You know we're not going to change." Then Sonya, "You know we're going to be all over you whenever we get the chance." Susan's turn, "Dad even warned us to be ladies when we came to visit you. He wouldn't let the girls go over until they said they would act like ladies too." Then Sonya again, "That's why your family hasn't been over. You know how we are at home. We've seen you a few times there since you got your new house and you always end up getting upset with us."
"You girls have got to let it be." I complained. "I'm not on the market at home or my place. I'm not America's most eligible bachelor. I'm your brother. You guys are far too good looking to tease me the way you do. It's a wonder I haven't snapped and done you all in the living room in front of everyone."
Simultaneously, "Be still my heart." Then Sonya, "We should be so lucky."
Sunshine was laughing heartily. Loud enough to worry me as that could hurt her concussion. Agnes and June were laughing too but quietly.
"Sounds like Mr. Bashful here has had some good stuff in his face for a long time." Scoffed Agnes.
"The four of us have been hot after his ass since we turned twelve or thirteen. The girls were after him since they were ten. I think Mom and Dad thought he was doing us since we were about fourteen." This Susan said to June and Agnes then turned to me and said. "You know Mom put us on the pill when we were fourteen so we could, as she justified it, regulate our periods. She also gave us lectures on incest and family cause we were fooling around constantly. Didn't you get any of those lectures?"
I just shook my head, closed my eyes and lay back on my pillow. Damn these two were bad. And in front of my neighbors and what may be my first real girlfriend.
"What's the matter with you Chuck." Sunshine asked. "Why didn't you play with your sisters. You love them and took care of them then. Why didn't you make love to them?"
The twins had their mouths open gawking at what Sunshine was saying.
"Sunny." I said. "A person doesn't do that. It isn't right to do physical sexy stuff with your family, especially with younger sisters. It just isn't right."
You could see Sunshine screwing herself up to say something. "Well I don't know what's right but these two seem to love you a lot and want you really bad, as much as I did. You're family to us, you know. You've made love to Mom, Grandma and me and that was okay. So what's the deal with your sisters?"
"You go girl." Came simultaneously from Sonya and Susan.
Susan seemed almost in shock and whispered. "He's screwing the whole family."
"Oh Sunny." I said. "It's just how I feel. It's what I feel is right and wrong. Other people would not look at it like that. It just is not the way people do stuff."
"Well you said I do a lot of stuff wrong." Sunny defended her thoughts. "Like offer you to Mom, and Grandma, and Myra, and Alice and even Jill but that all turned out to be fun." Sunshine was talking with conviction. "Now I'm telling you to make love to your sisters like you make love to me. Make them feel good like you do me."
The twins were grinning and said, "Yeah. Do it."
I couldn't believe all this and said only, "Oh shit."
June decided to help me out. "You girls need to let up on Chuck. Perhaps one of these days he will find it all right to play with you girls but you have to let it just happen. Don't push him till he just shuts us all out."
"You're right June." Said Sonya hanging her head a little. "It's just something that Susan and I have had on our minds for over ten years and it seemed like Sunshine was making it be right there."
Both girls came over to my bed and hugged me and kissed my face, not my lips. Simultaneously they said, "We love you Chuck. Don't be mad cause we want more out of it. We'll be good. Promise."
Hallelujah, I was saved from more on that issue as a nurse came in followed by three guys in while coats, one being Sunshine's doctor, Jake Wilson. The two new doctor's faces lit up when they saw Sonya and Susan.
"Quite a gathering here. What are the Johnson twins doing here?" Asked the one doctor.
Sonya did the honors. "This is our brother Chuck and this is girl friend Sunshine. These other two ladies are Sunshine's Mother and Grandmother."
"Well, I'm Frank Martin, Dr. Frank Martin, an oculist. This gentleman is the staff neurologist, Dr. Pearson who has been working with your physician, Dr. Wilson on this problem. Your doctor tells us that Miss Johnson has been blind since two years of age but when he was checking her he was confused as he thought she could see but was having a focus problem. This morning as Miss Johnson was waking up we did some tests then covered her eyes till we could all get together. We are going to remove the bandages and do some more tests. You all may stay if you are quiet. Sonya and Susan you can help with the bandages. Ready?"
"Don't be afraid baby." June said.
"I'm not Mom. I think I saw light this morning. But I don't know. I don't know what seeing is. I don't know what light looks like." Sunshine said this great emotion.
Sonya got a chair and sat it between Sunshine and my bed while Susan pulled the shades on the windows. Sonya then got me out of bed and sat me next to Sunshine and put my hand in her left hand.
Susan clipped off some tape then carefully unwound the bandage passing the end to Sonya then Sonya passing it back to Susan as it unwound. When it was off there were pads on Sunshine's eyes. Dr. Martin pulled the pads off but kept Sunshine's eyelids closed with his fingers.
"When I let your eyelids go, I want you to open only your right eye Sunshine. Okay? Can you do that or should I hold the your left eyelid so it stays shut?" Dr. Martin asked.
"I can do that." Sunshine said squeezing my hand.
The doc lifted his hand and said "Open your right eye."
Sunshine's eyelid raised, her pupil dilated and Sunshine gasped and turned toward me. "I think I see. There are shapes in front of me and..."
"Sunshine, close your right eye, now." Dr. Martin commanded. "When you have your right eye closed, I want you to open your left eye."
Sunshine closed her right eye then still looking in my direction, she opened her left eye. Again the pupil closed showing the affects of even the low light. "I think I can really see. It's the same with this eye. There are things in front of me."
"Okay Sunshine, close your eye, now." Dr. Martin said gently.
"Now Sunshine before I tell you to do the next part, I need to advise you." Dr. Martin continued. "What you are going to feel could make your stomach upset. You could feel dizzy or nauseous. If this begins, just close your eyes."
"Hold my hand Chuck, don't let go. I'm scared. I'm so nervous." Sunshine panted.
"Sunshine," Dr. Martin said with a firm voice. "Open both eyes at once."
Sunshine's eyes opened. She looked down at our hands. She looked up at my face. She looked around the room till her sight landed on June. "Momma."
June rushed to Sunshine's side. "Momma, I can see you. I can really see you."
June and Sunshine were both weeping. June was trying to hug her but Sunshine wouldn't let go of my hand. Sunshine looked over June's shoulder and "Grandma?"
Agnes joined June and attempted to hug her as well but actually was hugging June more than Sunshine. June and Agnes pulled back a second and Sunshine pulled my hand toward her. As she pulled me up, she let go of my hand then grabbed my arm and pulled then put her hand behind my head and pulled me to her, giving me a scorching kiss.
"I wanted the first man I saw to be you. And I wanted to see your face when we kissed." Sunshine said.
Dr. Martin asked everyone to move away for a minute so he could check Sunshine's eyes. He had her look into his eyes while he used a tiny flashlight on it, then he used an instrument and got really close looking into Sunshine's eyes. He backed away to the end of her bed and held up his hand with two fingers and asked, "How many fingers am I showing Sunshine?"
"Two."
He backed away to the wall then brought his other hand up and showed four fingers, "How many fingers am I showing now?"
Gleefully, Sunshine said, "four."
"You know I can't give her the regular eye test until she learns letters and shapes." Dr. Martin said, then continued. "Sunshine you're going to have to learn your ABC's all over again. You'll have to learn what the alphabet letters look like and learn to write them so you will know what they are. Are you seeing definition, you know, detail in the shapes in front of you now?"
"Yes, oh God yes." Sunshine gushed seemingly looking at everyone and everything but constantly coming back to look at me smiling.
"You may not focus well right away. Part of it will be your ability to recognize things. But don't worry. Focus comes with use. For today, I want you to use your eyes to look around and get aquatinted with shapes. But no sun light. Only low, soft lighting in this room. Tomorrow we'll turn up the light and check on more shapes. I'll send up some letter flash cards so you can begin learning your ABC's. Congratulations Sunshine, the accident was bad and it did injure your arm badly and you lost a lot of hair but it looks like you have regained your sight."
Dr. Wilson came over and patted Sunshine on the shoulder and told her he would check on her later. All three doctors left the room.
Sonya and Susan were instantly on Sunshine, taking her hand from me checking her pulse, blood pressure and temperature. Susan listened to Sunshine's chest then the twins stood back from Sunshine and smiled at her.
"I see you. I can't tell any difference between you by looking at you. I can tell you're different though." She closed her eyes and said, "Say something."
Both girls said "Hi Sunshine." But this time individually instead of at the same time. Sunshine opened her eyes staring then pointed to Sonya and said "Sonya." Then pointed at Susan and said, "Susan."
"Now someone else beside Chuck can tell us apart." Sonya said.
"All of you have to just get in front of me so I can just look at you, memorize what you look like. I need to touch you and see what I am touching this time. God I'm so excited I need to pee." Sunshine said.
The twins pulled a curtain around Sunshine and had her sit on a bedpan. When they were done with her, they pulled the curtain back.
"Sunshine baby," June said excitedly. "I'm so excited that you can see. There is so much to show you, so much to look at. You get to have a whole new world to see and to touch everything that you know but haven't seen."
Agnes was sitting on my bed with crocodile tears rolling down her face. I reached for her hand and she grabbed it then sobbed.
"What's the matter Grandma?" Sunshine asked reaching for my other hand.
"Oh Sunshine," Agnes sobbed. "It was my fault you were blind for so long. If I had not let you play in the yard that would never have happened. It is a miracle that you can see. It's like I'm being forgiven for letting that happen to you."
"Well Grandma." Said Sunshine. "It's only fitting. A car took my sight and a car gave it back. Don't blame yourself, I never have. It was an accident then and an accident now."
Sunshine then looked at me. "Chuck. You look so gentle. Even more than you sound and feel. But looking at you makes me feel funny in my stomach, just like before we made love."
She looked at June, "Momma?" Sunshine asked. "Do you think I'll always feel so squeamish when I see or hear or smell Chuck?"
"Maybe Sunshine. Maybe." June said with a smile.
Susan announced. "This has been very exciting and I don't know about you guys but I am starving. Sonya and I are going to get us some food. First though, everyone want some coffee?"
We ate, Dr. Wilson came in to check bandages and the healing progress then Dr. Martin came in and checked Sunshine's eyes again and suggested a little more artificial light in the room and brought a set of flash cards and a beginning reader.
Agnes and June told Sunshine and I that we would probably be discharged from the hospital the day after tomorrow. We agreed that when we left we would all go back home so we would be more comfortable. Agnes said that an attorney was coming by late this afternoon to discuss what was happening with him.
Sunshine and I spent the afternoon playing with the cards. She actually learned all her letters quickly. Since the cards were both small and capital letters, Sunshine had the chance to see both. We even looked at the beginning reader where we practiced sounding out words. Sunshine instantly began recognizing three letter words and asked for paper and a pencil so she could practice writing. I commented that she was right handed and couldn't use that hand and arm but she said she thought she could use either hand to write, as she had not learned before.
Late that afternoon the attorney showed up. Agnes introduced him as Gregory Winegarten and he first wanted the twins to remove bandages so he could take pictures of the damage. He took pictures of everything multiple times from multiple angles. When the girls had us wrapped back up, he told us what he had been doing.
"When Agnes asked me to get right on this, I filed a negligence lawsuit for fifty million. I was able to get in front of a judge to confirm the suit and petition the court to freeze the assets of the dead driver. The family was already trying to raid his accounts but the Judge made the freeze retroactive to the time of the accident. The family has an attorney who is attempting to probate the will but there will be the hang up of the frozen assets and pending civil action before the fulfillment of the probate. All in all, I think this is all under control. In all likelihood the family is going to want to go to court to settle the suit as soon as possible. We'll be ready and can do that whenever you two feel comfortable with it. You might need to wait to see what long term problems you may have. Either way the original amount is high enough that damages could exceed what this guy and his insurance coverage is worth. His insurance company may deny coverage since he was breaking the law at the time. So far I haven't been able to see a copy of coverage's." He looked at us and around at June and Agnes. "Everybody okay so far?"
He took some papers from his briefcase and said, "I need to get you two to authorize me as your attorney so I can act in your behalf. This is my standard agreement with attorney/client privileges outlined. It states my fees, which are the same as I charged you, Agnes, and it also states what my fees will be if we forfeit the lawsuit."
Agnes took one of the copies, read it and handed it to me with a nod. I signed it and gave it back. Sunshine didn't know what to do so I put my bed table over her and told her to just close her eyes and sign it just like she has always signed things. She traced the line with a finger then placed her hand where it should be and signed it left-handed.
"That's it folks. I'll keep you posted through Agnes. There won't be anything happening for a couple of weeks so we will let everything simmer. Oh, ah, Mr. Johnson, ah Chuck. Did you want me to work with your insurance company or companies to take care of your car and these hospital bills?"
"That would be good." I said. "Had'nt thought of what the hospital stuff was going to cost. My company health insurance should cover me here except for deductibles but my car insurance should cover most of the medical expenses for Sunshine as well as most for myself. Let me get my wallet for my insurance card."
"No need. I already have all your information. It was in the glove box of your car. I've already notified your insurance company and have given the hospital that information. If there is further money involved then you can use your company's health plan. I took it upon myself to go ahead and do that as you were coming on board as a client anyway. Asking you about it, just made it official."
"Oh yeah, one last thing. Sometimes the estates of rich guys get anxious to get their hands on some big money. If these guys agree to some kind of obnoxious settlement, do I have your permission to settle?" He asked looking at Agnes more than Sunshine or me."
"After filing for fifty mil, I can't imagine what you think would be obnoxious." I laughed. "Sure finish it for us if you get the opportunity."
He smiled and nodded as he stood holding out his hand. We shook hands. He got ready to leave but stopped and gave Agnes a hug and on the way out.
Sonya said, "Fifty million?" Susan mimicked her.
"That's only costs and actual damages." Agnes cautioned. "As soon as he finds out what he can get, he's ruthless and will be squeezing every penny out of the estate he can. He is good."
"Is he the one that handled June too?" I asked.
"Yep. He's the one who has made your girlfriend quite wealthy." Agnes said with a satisfied smile.
"All that and I can see." Sunshine said with tears in her eyes.
That evening, Sunshine was able to get out of bed without anything attached to her. We shuffled up and down the hallway with the twins, Agnes and June followed along.
The next morning we walked again for almost thirty minutes after breakfast so Sunshine could look at everything and get exercise at the same time. She was asking "What is this." And, "Is this a." She was as inquisitive as a three year old.
Latter that day Dr. Martin took Sunshine to an examination room and gave her a thorough eye exam. She surprisingly had close to twenty, twenty vision. The clarity of what she saw had improved till she was marveling at the colors of everything. The differences between pink and maroon were causing her some confusion but she was beginning to put shades of colors in perspective.
