The next morning we were up early and moving at first light.
Dawn and I got into the cart. Sunny didn't know what to do, as
she saw us drive up the previous day. She didn't want anything to
do with a 'magic' machine. Dawn got a little impatient with
her. She grabbed her sister and plunked her ass down between her
and I. As soon as started, Sunny was trying her best to get
off. Dawn held her and was talking softly to her. As soon
as she found out that the cart was not going to hurt her, I opened it
up a bit. We pulled away from the tribe but not so far as to
loose them. As we were moving along I took a look at both
girls. Beautiful, with their long hair streaming out behind
them.
At the rate we were going, I knew we would have to spend one more night
out under the stars. That was O.K. with me. I would be kept
warm by the bodies of two women. Not a bad life.
At about an hour before sunset, everyone stopped. The people
found a place to put there bedding and gear. Fires were started
and the cooking commenced. It was mostly a meat of some kind that
was cooked over the fires. As soon as everyone was finished with
the meal, guard duty assignments were made. I was left out of the
rotation, and I asked why. The man that did the assigning told me
that as chief of the tribe, I was to be protected as much as
possible.
The night went smoothly until a big cat came prowling around. It
was driven off by the men throwing burning sticks at it. After
that the guard was doubled. No telling, the cat may or may not
come back.
The next morning the tribe had a breakfast made up of meat that had
been cooked the night before. Then we were on the trail
again. By noon I could see the cliff and the cave. We
pushed on, and soon were at the cave. I went inside to check and
see if any animals had decided to take up residence in the cave.
All clear.
I invited all of the people in and let them set up where they
would. In a short time they were mostly settled. Some
people went out and gathered firewood for all of the people. Soon
three fires were lit and the gloom of darkness left the cave.
Just before dark a kid came running up to me. He said he had
found water in the cave. He led me to a small alcove and I saw
what he was talking about. A spring was bubbling away and the
water was running deeper toward the back of the cave. It ran into
a pool that was about thirty feet long and ten feet wide at it
widest. Then it disappeared into a large pile of rocks. A
bathing pool if I ever saw one, that is until I put my hand in the
water. It was just a couple of degrees above freezing. I
cupped my hands and dipped them into the water. I took a
taste. Best water I ever drank.
I informed the people about the water. It was a long walk to the
stream to get water, and the girls were happy that it was so near.
We had to post a guard at the entrance to the cave every night, because
a big cat had tried to get in one night. Let me tell you, it was
a close thing. It tried to get one of the young boys, but he
screamed as loud as he could. That woke everyone and I did away
with that cat. Another fur to sleep on.
I got an idea. We would have to put a gate up in the
entrance. I talked to the men about it, and they were all for
it. It was a lot of work, but I heard no complainants. It
took three days to put it in place. First, they dug a trench from
one side of the entrance to the other. Then with the tools I had,
they cut trees of about six inches in diameter. The girls were
busy plating rope from grass that they went out and cut.
They actually made a double wall. One just to the inside of the
cave and one outside. The door was just big enough to get the
cart in. It opened outward. It had a rope that could be
used to shut the door. It was long enough to tie off to a post on
the inside the cave. The door was very heavy, but I found some
hinges in one of the containers. They were fastened with six inch
lag bolts. The door was easy to open after we installed the
hinges.
The men thought that the door was better than sliced bread. Once
we were in the cave, it would be very hard for man or beast to get in.
One day a couple of weeks later, the ladies were out gathering
vegetables. I expected them back shortly. Then there was a
commotion at the door. The girls were back and something was
bothering them. I grabbed my guns and headed for the door.
I untied the rope and swung the door out. Three men were trying
to hold Dawn. She was fighting, biting and kicking. I
yelled STOP! One of the men tried to grab a spear and jab it into
me. I shot him before he had much of a chance to do
anything. The other two took off as fast as they could. I
let them go. I dragged the dead on down to and across the
stream. I left him for the buzzards.
NO ONE was going to mess with me or mine. I would try to protect
the women I was, well married to. I would protect the people in
my cave.
That night my ladies were acting like anything but ladies. They
were acting like fuck bunnies. I didn't let them know but I was
silently encouraging them. I guess that it was contagious,
because the cave was in an uproar all night.
The next day all of the men looked tired but happy. Hell, I had a
smile on my face you couldn't remove with dynamite. The women
looked as if they were buying the world and the last payment had been
made.
Later that day, I wondered what
else was in the containers. I went to the first one and found
boxes upon boxes of clothing. Summer clothing and winter
clothing. The summer clothing looked like Levies trousers and
shirts. The winter boxes were full of the same type of things,
with the exception that they had an insulating layer sewn inside.
I found a type of boot in several other boxes. The summer ones
were just tall moccasins, that you could just put your feet into.
The winter ones were knee high and had a zipper like closure. We
were set as far as clothing was concerned.
The next things I found was a very large smoker dryer for meat.
It had large wheels on it, but is was too heavy for me to push out of
the container. I got a few of the men to help me. We soon
had it in the cave and in place.
The last thing in the container was a huge BBQ set up. I had the
men push it inside. Then I made an announcement. We would
go hinting in the afternoon. I wanted a bison haunch to put on
the BBQ.
The men got ready to hunt. As we walked out of the cave I spotted
a group of aurochs drinking at the stream. They all had their
heads down. So I sited in on a young bull. The 50 Cal.
round did a job on him. He dropped like a stone. Then I
spotted a yearling cow. I sited in on where I thought her heart
would be. Another auroch bit the dust. One of the men said,
"We will go and get the animals you have killed".
I stood at the top of the hill watching for any predator that might be
attracted by the smell of blood. A little over an hour later the
last of the meat had been carried into the cave. I had the men go
collect a stack of dry wood. I got a fire going in the BBQ and
when it was down to hot coals had a haunch brought out. Then I
cut the haunch into very large stakes. Once I had everything
ready, I put the meat on the grill and closed the top. I soon had
a crowd around me. I sat down on a rock to wait until the meat
was ready to turn.
I had just got up to turn the meat, when dawn came steaming up to
me. She said, "Cooking is woman's work, not men's work.
Then she opened the top and turned the meat. She smiled at me and
said, "You have a strange way of cooking, but I think it might be
better than the way we do it. You have enough meat to feed the
whole tribe all over one fire".
I then showed her the BBQ sauce. Then I showed her how to put it
on the meat. Again, I was chased away. All of the women had
gathered around and Dawn was telling them just how to use the
BBQ.
A few of the women were building drying racks for the rest of the
meat. I had them stop and then showed them how to use the big
dryer. After they understood the operation they chased me away
again. I went to my rock and sat down to watch the women.
An hour or so later, Dawn brought me a chunk of the finished
meat. I tried it and WOW. The meat was perfect. And,
I told Dawn so. The meat was tender and melted in my mouth.
Some of the women went into the cave and brought a large kettle of
vegetables. The meal was served in wooden bowls. And it was
close to the best meal I had ever eaten.
The only thing the meal needed was a little salt and pepper. I
put my bowl aside and went to the containers. In the second one I
found a case of Morton Salt, and a case of black pepper. I took a
box of salt and a box of pepper out and put a little on my meal.
Dawn spotted what I was doing and asked me what these things
were. I told her. She said, "I have seen salt before and it
is brown. I have never seen what you call pepper. Why did
you put it on your food".
I said, "Dawn, the salt is pure and all of the dirt and sand have been
removed. I put it on my food to make it taste better. The
food was wonderful before, bu now is even better". I got a peace
of meat out and gave it to dawn. She popped it in her mouth and
then her eyes lit up. Then she said, "You only put a little on
your food. Salt must be very strong".
Then she wanted to know about pepper. I put a pinch of it on her
hand and she licked it up. Then her eyes got big. She said,
"Pepper is hot without being cooked. Will it make all of the food
you put it on as hot as the pepper"?
I said, "No, it will not. But if you put a little on the food, it
will make the food taste better".
She asked, "Can I put some on the food as it is being cooked".
Again I said "Yes, you can. but just a little. If you can taste
the salt in the food, you have put too much on it. The same with
pepper. A little is good and a lot is bad".
Dawn came to me one day, and she
had a look of fear on her face. She acted like she wanted to tell
me something but was afraid of my reaction. After a few minutes
of beating around the bush about it, I said, "Dawn, tell me what is
troubling you, I will not be angry at you". I pulled her to me
and held her. She talked about a lot of things, until she said,
"I think I am going to have a baby".
I yelled out, "A BABY. That is wonderful. I love children,
but I have never had one I could call my own".
Dawn was all over me, and I loved it. I picked her up and carried
her to our little sleeping area. I pulled her clothing off and
then made love to her. She was hotter than a five alarm fire, and
I was the only fireman in the area. We made love for over an
hour. Dawn came so many times that she couldn't talk. When
I let her go, She put her clothing on and staggered away.
I got a message in my head then. "The child is perfect, she will
carry it to term with no complications. It will be and easy
birth, because we will help. Also, the one you call Sunny is with
child. She just does not know it, yet".
I sat there stunned. Where did that come from? I hadn't
realized that the people that had brought me here were still around.
I was worried about having children in this age. No, medical
attention at all. Then it occurred to me that the people here had
been having children all along. I knew that someone here knew
what to do. HOLD ON A MINUTE. The ones that brought me here
said that they would help. I relaxed.
It was a couple of weeks later. Their had been a small fight
between the men of my tribe and another more aggressive tribe. A
couple of my men had been hurt. Nothing major, just a few
cuts. I wanted a better weapon for my men. The only thing I
could think of were bows and arrows. But it would take a long
time to make them.
The next morning when I woke, I saw three big boxes sitting just inside
the entrance to the cave. Dawn and Sunny were busy making
breakfast for us, so I went and opened one of the boxes. I saw
what looked like short arrows. I picked on up and found it was a
little bit to heavy to be an arrow. It had a three bladed razor
tip on it. On the other end was a knock that took a very large
string. The fletching was short plastic vanes, that would spin
the arrow. I didn't see any kind of bow.
I opened the next box and found, CROSS BOWS.
They were all marked 70 KG. I thought about it and came up with
just a little over 150 lb. pull. I got one out and pulled it up
and cocked it. It was hard to pull at first, then it became
easy. The bow had roller cams on it. On top of the body a
small telescopic site had been installed. I let the string
down.
I called the leader of the men to me. I showed him the cross bows
and bolts. He had no idea of what he was looking at. I had
him take a packet of bolts and a bow. I got a set myself.
Then outside we went.
I gave him a short schooling on how to site on a target. Then I
demonstrated how to shoot. I looked in the eyepiece at a target
off in the distance. A red glow lit up inside the scope. I
looked at a tree about a hundred meters away. I put the cross
hairs on a knot left by a limb falling off. I eased back on the
trigger and TWANG. The bolt buried it's point in the knot, and
shattered. Won't do that again.
I then showed him a drawing in the dirt of the site
picture. I drew a rough outline of a deer. Then I showed
him the site and let him look threw it at several things. Then I
drew a circle and cross hairs over the deer. I put the cross
hairs right over where the heart would be. He smiled and cocked
his bow. He put a bolt in and stood and sited in on
something. He eased back on the trigger and TWANG. I heard
the bolt his something. I looked around and saw nothing. He
was smiling. He said, "I kill deer".
He walked away and then stopped just beyond some bushes. He
lifted the head of a deer up to show me what he had done. I
walked over to him.
Sure enough, a large deer like animal was laying on the ground, dead.
The man was almost dancing. He said, "Before this it was very
hard to
kill deer. They are very fast. If they see a hunter they
run away. Only the strongest men who can throw a spear very far,
get deer. This, pointing to the bow, makes even a small boy, able
to kill animals from far away". Then he grinned from ear to ear.
The bows were like none that I had seen before. They had a metal
thing that stuck out the front of the bow. You would put it on
the ground and push down on the stock. The string was pushed back
and the bow was cocked. Then all you had to do was place another
bolt. Then you were ready to go.
He had the deer gutted and the heart and liver back inside in just a
few minutes. He picked it up as it only weighed a few pounds and
started towards the cave. He said, "Woman take care of the rest".
The women did indeed take care of the rest. They had it sliced
and diced in less that an hour. They put a haunch on to cook and
then chased the rest of us out of the way.
The meal was, deer meat, some kind of potato thing but not as starchy
as an Idaho Potato, and some kind of vegatable that looked a lot like
lima beans. I ate till I couldn't wiggle then I ate some
more.
