Samantha's New Job - Chapter 21

We spent the weekend at home. Samantha was somewhat detached and moody, thinking to herself most of the time. The only time I probed, she snapped "I'm thinking about a dream I had," and I backed off.

That Monday I left for a business trip to Omaha. I was hoping to have Amanda handle this, because it usually was the junior partner's job to cover due diligence. But she had concerns about being away from Paul, and I agreed that she seemed to have our client wrapped around her finger.

After a week in Omaha, I finally had everything I needed for the client. It was Friday, two days later than I expected to be. One of the executives in Omaha invited me to play golf at his club. I tried to turn him down, but Amanda pointed out that it would be very valuable for me to forge this relationship. I ended up taking a flight back Sunday night, getting home at 11:30 and going directly to bed.

Monday morning I awoke suddenly, hearing a noise. A few minutes later, Amanda peeked her head around the corner and tiptoed into my bedroom. She was wearing one of the cheap business suits from her closet. I tried to sneak out of bed but even the slightest movement would have awakened Samantha.

Amanda stepped out of the closet wearing a cute sweater, leather pants, and a pair of my wife's boots. She stopped by my wife's dresser and helped herself to some jewelry. Tired from a sleepless night, I dozed off. The phone rang and Samantha answered it. I fell back asleep.
