Author's Notes

I began the "Nicola Adventures" largely because I wasn't finding any stories on ASSM that appealed to me anymore. The first, Bikini Audition, was submitted on August 26 2001. The series was meant as a vehicle for stories with a variety of different themes. However, all were meant to be fun and silly, like the B movies that inspired them, with major doses of exhib. As I found writing sex scenes boring (preferring the 'tease' leading up to them), many of these are actually quite tame, and sometimes the story cuts away just as things get really hot (which some readers have chastised me for). I made Nicola Australian because I am from that part of the world, and it makes the character stand out more. The same goes for her appearance (brunette) and her demeanor (intelligent). Nicola is both an exhibitionist and a realist, doing what she does because she enjoys it and because it'll help her career. The order given here is the order in which they were written. I've included reader responses to specific stories. Names have been deleted, and there's some editing, although this is for space and clarity and I honestly believe that what appears here represents the correspondant's opinion.

Bikini Audition (posted 28 August 2001)

The first Nicola Adventure. Inspired largely by the "Centerfold Screen Test" videos and influenced by Maria Gonzales' Everything Goes. Nicola's blue satin robe is identical to one owned by B starlet Gail Harris (aka Gail Thackray or Robyn Harris). Jennifer Dempster was not deliberately named after the ESPN-2 workout girl. The synopses were an after thought. Kristi Ducati, Tammy Parks and Leslee Bremmer are the names of real B starlets. Tabbitha Young & Patricia Cruz are characters created by Maria Gonzales, they weren't mentioned in the original posting because I didn't have permission from Maria at the time. Angela Monroe is named, although I had yet to write a story featuring her. "Bikini auditions" are fairly common in the industy: actresses wishing to appear in Hercules and Xena were required to submit a photo of themselves in a bikini, and there exists infamous footage of Cameron Diaz disporting herself for an audition wearing only a thong. Only later did I learn there really is a film called "Bikini Bandits", which you can see on ifilm.com.

Hollywood Party Hostesses (posted 9 October 2001)

Inspired by the final part of Black Demon's Cruise Ship Captives. The first appearance of Angela Monroe, Nicola's rival. Their bitchy relationship was inspired by Shon Richards's Thigh vs Thigh series. Dizzy is named after a character in Party Plane (actually, the character's name is Suzie, but she is called Dizzy in one scene). Like Bikini Audition, the story begins with Nicola answering the phone. Nicola's quote from Jennifer Aniston "who cares I've got great boobs" was from an episode of Friends where Rachel "pops out" in a restaurant (off-camera, unfortunately). Although it isn't stated, this hotel is the same one that appears in Sex Kitten, which is why in that story the concierge knows who she is. The 'contest' idea came late in the writing process and provides a good backbone to the story. The final twist was lifted from an episode of The Simpsons (where Bart and Todd Flanders compete in a minigolf tournament). The only NA to name the next story (a la James Bond), I later dropped this because I changed the title of the next story (Nicola Gets A Woody). This is probably the NA I personally find most arousing.

Nicola Gets A Woody (posted 29 October 2001)

Originally called The Starlets. The title is a pun- 'Woody' is the (fictional) B Oscar, named after Ed Wood, and also American slang for an erection. (The drawback is that people may assume this is some kind of TG story, but that's what story codes are for). Written very quickly after Hollywood Party Hostesses as I was quite chuffed with the reader responses. Kristi Ducati was a real starlet who starred in Bikini Carwash Company 1 & 2, but the career path ascribed to Jennifer- getting married and moving away- is actually what Kristi did. Kristi Ducati's Bikini School is a fictional movie, but Sylvia Kristel's Beauty School and Marilyn Chambers' Bedtime Fantasies are not. Apparently, my remark about Rikki Brando isn't too far wrong- check this out. Nicola claims to be able to hold her liquor, but as we see in Best in Show she can't. "Kent Dusic" is named after the actor who appeared in Takin' It All Off (as Kent Stoddard) and Bikini Carwash Company (as Joe Dusic). Includes a number of references to other NAs, some of them unwritten at this time. Maria's Tabbitha Young appears, although in the original posting I accidentally called her "Britney". Angela makes a brief appearance, their rivalry adding a small dimension to this tale without taking the spotlight away from Nicola & Kristi. An attempt to write an emotional yet explicit FF story after receiving a female reponse to previous NAs, and the closet NA to rom. Probably my least successful story. I don't think the academic references helped this NA as stroke material. Reposted for the September 7 2002 Sapphic Erotica Festival, with a special preamble in which I wondered if it was possible for a straight male author to write truly lesbian erotica.

Bikini Christmas Carol (posted 20 December 2001)

Originally intended to be about a birthday surprise, I begun this in November 2001 and changed it for a Christmas release. Angela & Dizzy's second appearance. Candy Barr and Titania 'Tits' Toplesky are briefly introduced and setup for larger roles in later NAs. The first NA to have large sections written from the perspective of characters other than Nicola (Mr. Carter, Josh, Jimmy, Angela). "Mrs. Glick" is a character from The Simpsons. Jimmy Harper is named after the principal in Boston Public. More Dollars than Sense (or More $ than ¢) was an idea for a softcore series based on The Beverly Hillbillies; an intended future subplot has Angela appearing on the show. Dizzy trying to get the t-shirt on was inspired by a scene from Party Favors. The original subject code included FF, even though the FF was very limited (Miss Groves and one of the TNA girls). "Erotic Fiction by Hecate" is a nod to the author who helped me out. Originally to have included a list of ideas for uncoming stories, this was dropped for the same reason I dropped announcing the title of the next NA (although they now appear on this website).

Nicola's Hot Screen Test (posted 4 December 2001)

Originally written for Indian Outlaw's story board which specializes in exhibitionism, and very short because of their size limit. First NA to go back in time, rather than taking place after the previous one, and chronologically the earliest one (though I may do a George Lucas and go back even further to tell Nicola's backstory). The plot is a combination of Centerfold Screen Test 3, a scene from Dennis Potter's Blackeyes and something that I've seen happen (lights setting off a sprinkler). And yes, 2000W lights are called 'blondes', because their plastic casings are yellow (and 800W lights are 'redheads'). Actually written after Bikini Christmas Carol but posted before. Reader responses: "Enjoyable story, Knickers. For a story with no sex, it was still sexy, and well-told." "Ah, Nicola is just as wicked as ever. Love it." Sex Kitten (posted 9 January 2002)

The first story posted with "A Nicola Adventure" in the subject line, as I felt the series had enough of a following. "Sex Kitten" is based on Atomic Kitten, an English girl band. In reality, the girls are older- in their mid-20s, and have larger breasts. Tash & Kerry are names lifted from the real band, but the third member is variously called Jenny or Lil. The real Kerry tried to supress nude photos taken of her early in her career, and was married shortly after this story was posted. The reference to a band member being talked into posing for nude photos by a photographer actually happened to a member of another band Hear'Say. Plot inspired by a news item that Atomic Kitten were going to LA to shoot a raunchier version of one of their videos for a US release. Largely authentic description of film production methods. The ending was difficult to come up with; it needed to tie up the story and top what has come before. A shorter alternative ending was written in which the girls strip Nicola naked at LAX (available on the ftp site). Judging by feedback (including a Tainted Lime Review), and the number of hits on the webpage, this is the most successful NA to date. However, I've never been satisfied with the ending, and feel that Tash, Kerry and Lil could've been fleshed out more as individual characters. At the time, this was my longest NA.

Nicola: Live & Uncensored (posted 15 February 2002)

The title is a reference to the Jerry Springer videos. Part of the NAs was that they could feature a number of different themes. This NA features span & humil and even a catfight (which I'm not normally in to). "Tony Moroni" was a joke-gangster name when I was a kid (hence his similarity to Tony Soprano). Kitten Magee is named after TV magician Paul Daniels's assistant Debbie Magee. Scooter is named after the Muppet (they both have roughly the same job) but based on the un-named teenager in The Simpsons. Angela's line "Okey-dokey now, here we go" is from Hannibal. Bikini Quantity Surveyors (first mentioned in Nicola Gets A Woody) was the most ridiculous take I could think of on the STSWB B-movie, inspired by a Fry & Laurie sketch about quantity surveyors. I considered making this a gameshow, but as Everything Goes set such a high bar, I decided against it. In terms of structure and story, I think this is perhaps my best piece of writing.

Best in Show (posted 17 March 2002)

Basic concept was inspired by the cover art for a video entitled Murder at Paradise Lake. The story idea of a political conference "coincidentally" taking place in a hotel at the same time as a beauty pageant predated my creation of Nicola by several years. Sammy Fish is named after a character in the 1970s Rosie Dixon books, a series of English novels that have influenced my stories. Because she doesn't understand what's going on, Nicola comes across as a bit of a bimbo, even though she has been well established as smart and savvy. Even though Angela appears, their rivalry is somewhat subdued and isn't the focus of the story. I realized half way through that in the NAs I've vastly overused the device of Nicola standing naked in front of a mirror. Originally, in the talent contest, Nicola played the passenger and Amy the stewardess (as one would expect), this was swapped round when I realised that the stewardess was the star of the show. The first NA to indulge my fetish for costumes. Surpassed Sex Kitten as longest NA. The theme of this story is that sex in the NAs is all well and good, but exhibitionism is better. A correspondent emailed me and said that they imagined Angela looks like Sophie Ellis Bextor in her video "Murder on the Dance Floor". Also appeared in Tainted Lime Reviews, though didn't get as high a score as Sex Kitten (which I concur).

Nicola & the Helpful Angel (posted 12 April 2002)

Written over the course of a single night. Like Nicola's Hot Screen Test, this was posted to a storyboard. I left it for a month, and then simultaneously posted it to ASSM along with Bikini Stewardesses Go Mile High. However, Nicola & the Helpful Angel took a little longer to appear. On top of this, in the preamble I listed Nicola & the Helpful Angel first, although in fact it should be second after Nicola's Hot Screen Test. Plot lifted from a late 70s 8mm film, produced by Mayfair magazine. I first heard about the film in the mid-80s. I originally never intended to tell how Nicola and Angela first met, (when they first appear in Hollywood Party Hostesses, they're already acquainted) but in the end I couldn't resist. The getup the actress in the Mayfair film has on was surprisingly difficult to describe in prose, and as I've never actually seen the film itself, imagination was required as to how one would go about making a 'polythene bikini'. Update 18/05/03: By a funny accident, I have managed to get hold of this film, though the editing doesn't actually show the bikini being made.

Bikini Stewardesses Go Mile High (posted 10 April 2002)

Most ideas start with a story and the title comes later, here is an idea that started with the title and then I came up with a story to suit it. Jennifer makes a re-appearance. Couldn't use Angela or Dizzy (because neither was in Bikini Stewardesses 2), so created Candy Barr as a shy but eager blonde. Candy was mentioned in Bikini Christmas Carol, and named after a character in Loose Screws (Screwballs 2). Donovan Tate is named after a character in Bikini Carwash Company (Donovan Drake). Some dialogue is lifted from Party Plane. The couples are deliberately arranged so that everyone is with someone from another country (this technically makes this story interr). Leo from Hong Kong is very British because I couldn't write a Chinese accent. The 'dessert treat' was something I read in a model's bio in a girly magazine, so it was probably fictional to start with. Real Gulfstream jets have a different layout than suggested here. The idea of Tate putting the aircraft on autopilot and coming back to the boardroom is pretty ridiculous. The story is a virtual remake of Hollywood Party Hostesses, but without the Nicola/Angela dynamic.

Maybe its because it took away from Nicola being the center of the story. By making Nicola the middle tie-breaker person, it detracts from her uniqueness. Having said that, I really like the tease elements of the story. The sex was minimal as it should be. The real star is Nicola and her body and her willingness to use it. I love how she makes buffoons out of the rich and famous. There should be a commercial-"Ah, the power of boobs.""

Knickers Down in Acapulco (posted 20 May 2002)

The first NA written entirely from another character's perspective: Robbie the Bellboy. Robbie is pretty much me, looking at Nicola as I would one of my B-idols. This makes Knickers Down in Acapulco the most personal NA, and has an unusually serious and introspective tone. The hotel is called Paradise Beach, after the hotel in Best in Show (Paradise Lake). I sought advice regarding towels vs robes whilst writing this NA. The scene where Nicola surfs the net recalls the hi-jinx of many past NAs. Brad, Chad, Rad & Tad are parodies of the kind of American frat boys you'll find in many 80s B-comedies. The song Nicola plays is called Who the Hell Do You Think You Are? by New Zealand band Garageland- I'm reliably informed it's a good tune to strip to. The ending is slightly sentimental, and a little out of place compared to other NAs. Bollocking: Australian slang, meaning a severe reprimand. This was the first NA to mention the website in the preamble. It wasn't until much later that I realised this was actually an interracial story, and re-coded it as such.

Shutterbug Starlets (posted 29 May 2002)

Another short tale, in the same vein as Nicola's Hot Screen Test and Nicola & the Helpful Angel. Inspired by those paparazzi shots of actresses cavorting nude on beaches, and wondering if perhaps they deliberately allow themselves to be snapped for publicity purposes. Specifically, pictures of Ariane Brown and a topless gal-pal, hence Jennifer's inclusion in the story. Originally intended to include voy, but I decided to not include a male viewpoint. As always, Nicola's lesbian sex is more passionate and emotional than her sex with men (don't ask me why, it just kinda drifted in that direction). The title is pretty much nonsensical ("Shutterbug" implies that the girls take pictures, not pose for them), a fluffy piece of alliteration, and technically inaccurate: as the story downplays Jennifer's status as a starlet, there is only starlet singular (Nicola) frolicking for the camera. The magazine article was supposed to have a date (October 2001), but I cut this because I'm starting to lose track of the timeline of events.

Carwash Cuties (posted 11 July 2002)

Given my affection for Bikini Carwash Company, you might think that a carwash-themed story would be a given, but in fact this idea was suggested by a reader. As a result, I had no real idea for a story in mind when I sat down to write it. Because of this and other factors, this was the longest time it took me to write an NA. Employs a 'contest' structure that includes Dizzy (see the reader comments for Hollywood Party Hostesses). More titular alliteration. Of course, there is no Bikini Carwash Company TV series. Most of the story is written from Angela's point of view, just to try something different, but the climatic scene is Nicola's POV. Sunshine Carwash was the name of the carwash in the Bikini Carwash Company movies. An OB (Outside Broadcast) van is a mobile TV control room. You've probably seen them on TV or movies, although real ones are actually a little larger. The first NA to appear on the website before appearing on a.s.s.m. The week of its release (July 7-July 13), Carwash Cuties got 4932 downloads from ASSTR, earning the #27 spot in the top 100. Looks like the most popular NA to date.

Bikini Audition 2: The Wrath of Angela (posted 24 August 2002)

Written to celebrate my first anniversary of writing for ASSM. In best B movie tradition, this is a sequel in name only. Originally to have been set exactly 1 year after Bikini Audition, but this would mean that Nicola would be 21, and Best in Show had already given her age as still being 20. Another case of coming up with a title first and then writing a story to match. Some plot & dialog borrowed from Nudity Required. The preface recounts Nicola & Angela's mutual antagonism to date. My intention is to create a shape to their relationship across the entire series, with this story marking the high point of Angela's dislike for Nicola. The two slackers were originally named Nick & Nick (after two guys I once knew), but this was changed to Wayne & Wayne to prevent confusion between 'Nick' and 'Nicola'. The girls heading out to a secluded spot to frolic naked in a stream was inspired by an article in Celebrity Sleuth in which Gail Harris pointed out a stream on her ranch that would be used for similar purposes in Alien Escape. The reference to the starlets being given community service was a last minute addition, and a set-up for a possible future NA. Warning! Academic mumbo-jumbo following: Laura Mulvey is a film critic best known for her theory of cinema's 'male gaze'. Here I try to subvert Mulvey. She claimed that the male gaze was based upon the dynamic of active/male & passive/female. Whilst the NAs unashamedly present women as sexual objects, they employ active female protagonists. It is Nicola and Angela who drive the story, with Wayne & Wayne relegated to minor roles.

InfoNicola (posted 17 September 2002)

Like Nicola: Live & Uncensored, InfoNicola is based around an unusual kink: breast enlargement. Inspired by a sketch on Night Stand in which host Dick Deitrich demonstrated a similar breast enlargement cream. Sammy Fish makes a second appearance. Mike & Tim are named after a pair of guys I used to work with. InfoNicola is different to other NAs in that Nicola's sexual desire gets the better of her, and she doesn't use it to advance her career. As a result, Nicola seems more passive than in other NAs, being taken advantage of rather than taking advantage of others. Another attempt to write explicit sex scenes, though they're not my forte.

Bikini Sorority House Party (posted 20 October 2002)

Although I only came up with this idea in early August 2002, a story came together quite quickly so I started writing sooner than planned. It occured to me that I'd never done a Nicola Adventure that used a T&A movie formula, hence the "save the sorority" storyline, plus introspection and postmodernism with the events of the story mirroring Nicola's movie. I went through several combinations of "Bikini" "Sorority" "House" and "Party" before arriving at the final title. There is a precedent for starlets who write T&A movies- Cheri Caffaro who starred in the Ginger movies, later wrote and co-produced the T&A classic H.O.T.S. "Constance House" is named after a minor character in Trading Places. Kim's character is based on Nikki Fritz's in Bikini Drive-In. Everything I know about American fraternities/sororities has come from watching 'college' sex-comedies. The Gratuitous Shower Scene is indeed 'gratuitous' (defn: extraneous, unnecessary) as it was added as an afterthought and has no real connection to the story. The reference to the "women's swim team and their water-soluble swimming costumes" is from Screwballs 2.

Undercover Starlet (posted 7 December 2002)

After coming up with the character name 'Bambi Thumper', I created this story just to show her off. Not surprisingly, her appearance is modelled on a certain TV character. Started out as a fairly short & easy to write story, but ballooned out of control (surpassed Best in Show as longest NA). Nicola & Bambi arriving at the mansion was inspired by the Jamiroquai video "Love Foolosophy", while the orgy-at-sea came from a brief scene in Donnie Brasco. If you read Nicola: Live & Uncensored closely you'll notice that it is indeed episode #85 that Nicola appears in. Nicola says that Bikini Sorority House Party is still in post-production to explain why it's never been mentioned before. Originally, the ending would've suggested that The Walrus was actually an AD at the FBI, and the whole thing was a setup just so he could have sex with Nicola, but I felt that given current events it wasn't a good idea to portray the agency that way. Another version of the ending had Nicola fucking the entire crew unconscious (hence Franklin's remark about Teducci "falling asleep").

"I just finished Undercover Starlet and it was pretty nice. A lot of times in sex stories, the FBI agent is caught, captured and humiliated so it was refreshing to see Bambi go through some reluctant exhibitionism to maintain her cover rather than something forced. The subtleties of reluctant nudity are rarely done and I think you nailed them. I also liked how we were more in Bambi's head than we were in Nicola's. I liked the ambiguity of wether or not Nicola was as brainless as she came across. ... Although you gave him a monstrous tool, I liked how you underplayed it when the Walrus fucked Bambi at the end. You often do a good job of not being explicit when you don't have to, but I think you showed that skill wonderfully here. I am haunted/fixated on how Bambi endured that fucking, and I thank you for letting my imagination do the wondering :)"

It always seemed a great dramatic structure for the series to take Nicola & Angela's relationship to the point where, alone and thrown together, they end up in a kinky lesbian tryst. Although Carwash Cuties took the edge off this alittle because they'd already had sex, I think the idea still works. This makes BikiniVivor less focused on exhibitionism and more on FF sex. Nicola's forced seduction is probably as rough as the sex will ever be in the NAs. In the finale, Nicola comes across as tougher than usual, giving her a real revenge on Angela. Nicola's line "That is not an accurate depiction of our usual relationship" is a reference to how many contestants on reality shows end up complaining that they were misrepresented. One question that might arise from this story is, why doesn't Nicola attempt to make some clothes out of palm leaves or something? Why indeed...

"The accident shook things up and putting Knickers on the island with just Angela was a great set-up. What I totally didn't expect was the romance that developed between them. Holy Crap. I would have never predicted it in a thousand years but looking back at the previous stories, it made perfect sense. Knickers IS a submissive and she melted under Angela's aggression. It was such a radical yet steamy change of pace for Knickers. I was almost disappointed to see how she turned the tables later on Angela. Sigh, they could have run off to Domme/Sub bliss together."

Topless Cheerleaders, Inc (posted 28 February 2003)

Two main influences here: the erotic appeal of a scantily-dressed girl performing aerobics and (once again) my costume fetish. Tease is a big factor here, I'm trying to get the reader to hang on for the big "demo" scene at the end. I found that audition scenes work better if written from the auditionee's POV, hence the focus on Traci. I had a problem here in that the audition came perilously close to ripping off Maria Gonzales's Everything Goes. The idea of Nicola and her "investors" was part of her backstory that I came up with from the start, and this is the first NA to make use of it, and gives me an opportunity to use the now-standard device of making passing references to Nicola's past sexcapades that may someday become stories in their own right. I think Topless Cheerleaders Inc is a bit of a return to the classic formula for NAs, but not quite as well structured or executed as Carwash Cuties. For the week March 2-March 8 2003, Topless Cheerleaders, Inc (the ascii file on the ftp site), got 4917 hits, earning the #49 spot in the top 100 on ASSTR.

Harem'd (posted 1,8,16 June 2003)

A 'finale' to the Nicola Adventures, designed to make the reader think this really was the end. In fact, the ending leaves me wide open to write more stories. Harem'd is intended as a parody of interr sex-slavery stories such as Black Demon, subverting conventions of those types of tales. The idea for the beauty contest (dangerously similar to Best in Show) came to me while I was watching the music video for Van Halen's "Hot For Teacher". By that point I realized the story was so huge I'd have to break it into 3 parts. I had originally intended that Nicola would figure out an escape all on her own, but some external help seemed necessary, as well as getting Angela to do her bit. The week I put Part 1 online, an African ruler announced that all of the world's problems were caused by women wearing pants, and this remark made its way into Part 3.
