"There you go, my little corporal," said Mrs. Perkins as she pulled her
people-carrier up to the curb.
"Mum!" wailed Ryan. "I've told you not to call me that"
Ryan's sister Sarah couldn't help but grin. She pushed her door open
while he was fiddling with his uniform, and made sure to slam the back
of his seat as she pulled herself out of the car.
"Give mummy a kiss."
"I'm almost 16, mum," Ryan said, explaining clearly why a kiss just
wasn't possible. He opened his door and leapt onto the curb. Sarah
pushed past him to claim the front seat for herself now he was gone.
"Watch it, squirt."
"Pick you up at the normal time?" Mrs Perkins called after her son as
he stomped off.
Sarah pulled the door to and stared after her brother as he jogged into
the school car park. Seven months since she quit and she still wished
she was going with him.
She'd joined the Air Cadets when she started Year 9, following in her
brother's footsteps. But he didn't like it. None of the boys on the
cadet squad liked it. They'd had girls try to join before and they knew
how to make them feel as unwelcome as possible. Sarah's best friends
had warned her about it: Kylie had an older sister who had tried to
join the cadets a few years ago, and Liz said Sarah would be better off
joining the Sea Cadets at the local pool like her cousin had.
Rev. Bennett, who tripled as RE teacher, school chaplain and commander
of the school's meagre RAF cadet force, either didn't notice or didn't
care that his cadets managed to scare-off any girl who joined.
Everything was made that bit harder for the girls - their packs were
that bit heavier, they had to do a few extras in each training routine,
run the extra lap of the field for some invented infraction.
After enduring six weeks of much rougher treatment than the four Year 9
boys were getting, longer than any girl they could remember, Sarah was
starting to be accepted by the boys. They all admired her when she went
through with a full parade and half hour run in her bare feet, after
her brother had made her take her take boots and socks off because of a
smudge in the polish. The run left her feet bruised and bleeding but
she hadn't complained or grassed, and the boys eased off after that.
But her brother, Year 11 and the Cadet Corporal in charge of the little
section, was very clear that the last thing he wanted was his little
sister in the cadets with him.
He'd told her enough times not to join, told her this was his thing and
it wasn't for girls, especially her. The following week, Ryan found
another smudge - a smudge she was sure he put there himself. This time,
he made all the cadets run in bare feet, and they went right back to
giving Sarah the silent treatment, throwing her bag over the fence when
she wasn't looking and gobbing on her back. Sarah was right back to
square one, and realised Ryan would always find a way to turn the
others against her. She quit. But she kept her uniforms and the hope
that one day she might be able to re-join.
Ryan Perkins ruled the 12-member cadet squad like a little empire.
Bennett was well past retirement age and rarely did anything but keep
an eye on the boys. But for the last few weeks, Bennett had been in
hospital and Perkins had been in sole charge. He was well-trusted by
the school staff and well-respected by the other boys. He didn't let
things slack, but he didn't make any of the cadets suffer (except the
girls who tried to join). They all took it seriously and they didn't
want to be given an easy ride.
This Saturday would see if the cadets were up to scratch with Bennett
not just taking a back seat but absent altogether: A Cadet Sergeant
from the local Squadron was coming to inspect them. It was a big deal
for Ryan and he'd been telling his family that every night at dinner
for two weeks. This was his chance to prove that he could take charge
on his own, as he had been for over a year really.
A couple of boys had arrived before Ryan and were already practicing
their drill. The rest of the boys turned up over the next fifteen
minutes, all ready and in place with ten minutes before the visiting
sergeant was due. They were all dressed in green and brown camouflage
fatigues, appropriate for both inspection and the training afterwards.
Because of the heat they weren't wearing jackets and had their sleeves
rolled-up with well-trained precision.
Ryan ordered them to form up and they all hastily put their blue berets
on and arranged themselves into two rows of six. He began drilling
them: "Ten-shun! Stand at... ease! Further apart there! Ten-shun!"
Right on time at 10 o'clock, a green Mini pulled up. The cadets came to
attention but couldn't resist squinting sideways, keeping their chins
forward and jutting up in the air. Cadet Corporal Perkins turned around
and began marching towards the car. He stopped half way between the
cadets and the disembarking new arrival. He couldn't believe his eyes.
Out of the car stepped a girl of 17 or 18. She was wearing the familiar
Wedgewood blue shirt (rather tight across her bust, the boys all
noticed), a dark blue skirt and tie and once out of the car she put a
beret on her head. The boys' jaws dropped.
Ryan couldn't make his legs work. He tried his mouth instead and
managed to mumble "are you..."
"Cadet Sergeant Jane Locke. You are expecting me, aren't you?"
"Jane? Oh. Er, yes. Yes, of course, Sergeant." Ryan managed to snap his
mind back in place. "All present and correct. I'd like to say how glad
we all are that you've been able to-"
"Don't worry about the pleasantries, Corporal," Jane said as she walked
past him. "Let's get on with it, shall we?"
"Yes, Sergeant." Ryan trotted after her then took his place beside her
in front of the cadets. "Stand at ease!"
The cadets had drifted out of their attention stance but jumped to the
new position, focussing on the drill and trying to forget that it was a
girl in uniform, an NCO at that, in front of them. Jane walked along
the front row, then round the end and along the back row, with Ryan
following her. She looked the cadets up and down as she went, her face
betraying no reaction. She stopped in front of the youngest cadet and
faced him square on, her eyes scrutinising him from top to toe.
"Cadet Private Greene," Ryan introduced him.
"Well done, Cadet Greene," said Jane as she concluded her first
inspection. She moved swiftly on to the next cadet.
"Cadet Private Barnes."
Jane immediately focussed on the metal badge on his beret. She brought
her face in close to his, staring above his forehead.
"Cadet Barnes, what do you have to say for yourself?"
"I... I..." Barnes cringed under the Cadet Sergeant's gaze and the
touch of her breath on his forehead.
"When was the last time you polished the badge on your beret?"
"Spit it out, Barnes," shouted Ryan.
"Last night, sir!" Barnes shouted back.
"Last night? Then why does it look like you've been sitting on it,
"I... I don't know."
"It's not polished, cadet! Corporal Perkins, your cadets do know that
they are required to polish their badges, don't they?"
"Cadet Private Barnes, your beret is not up to standard, is it?"
"It is not acceptable for you to turn up to inspection without your
uniform presented to the proper standard. If you cannot make your beret
presentable, you shouldn't be wearing it! Take your beret off!"
"You heard the sergeant," shouted Ryan, desperate to escape the blame
for his cadet's poor performance.
Barnes snatched his beret off his head, clutching it to his chest.
"Drop it on the ground, Barnes, you're going to have to clean it
properly later anyway."
Barnes looked down sadly as he dropped his beret on the ground. Jane
turned to face Ryan.
"Corporal, are your cadets familiar with collective responsibility?"
"Are they familiar with all cadets sharing punishment for one cadet's
"Oh. Yes, sergeant."
"Very well, go ahead."
"Oh. Squad! Remove berets!"
As one, the other 11 cadets in formation removed their berets and
dropped them on the ground. Jane moved on from Cadet Barnes and cast
her eyes over him looking for flaws.
"This is Cadet Private Stevenson."
"Good work, cadet," Jane said, finding nothing out place. Stevenson
smiled thinly and nodded as the NCOs stepped past him.
"Cadet Private Lawford."
Jane immediately saw the broken button half way down Lawford's shirt.
"Cadet Lawford. There. Is. A broken button. On. Your Shirt!"
Lawford swallowed hard.
"Yes, sergeant, I'm sorry. I told my mother it needed replacing, but
she's been busy with-"
"You told. Your mother! It needed replacing? You told your mother? If
you're in the middle of Afghanistan and you realise you forgot your
socket wrench, are you going to call your mother to bring it to you?"
"N-no sergeant, no I... I'm sorry, sergeant."
"Sorry is not good enough, cadet. Again, if you cannot make something
presentable, you shouldn't wear it! " She turned to Ryan. "Corporal?"
He knew what he had to do.
"Squad! Remove your shirts."
Greene and Barnes exchanged a brief glance but the cadets all did as
they were told, depositing their camouflage shirts at their feet.
Jane couldn't spot anything wrong with the next two cadets, Fulbright
and Fallon. She stalked round to the front row, where the first cadet
knew he was in for it. But Ryan, desperate to reassert control, spotted
the infraction before Jane did.
"Cadet Carter, where is your belt?" he bellowed. Jane crossed her arms.
"I have lost it, corporal," Carter shouted in reply, not breaking his
"Squad, belts off!" Ryan shouted.
"Thank you, corporal," Jane said as they moved on once more. Cadet
Spencer was up to scratch but Cadet Morris' boots were not.
"Corporal Perkins, you have taught your cadets how to clean and polish
their boots, haven't you?"
"Yes, sergeant. This cadet has been told three times."
"This is disgraceful. I should be able to see my face in those boots."
"Cadets, take your boots off!"
The cadets complied, but they were all noticeably reluctant this time.
The prospect on standing on the sharp gravel in the tarmac without
their boots put some off; others were starting to worry where this
going. In the back row, Stevenson crossed his fingers behind his back.
"Cadet Stevenson!" Jane shook her head. "Up to this point you were the
best-presented cadet here, but now I see you thought you could get away
without anyone seeing your socks." The other cadets all turned to look.
Stevenson's big toe was poking through a big hole. "Eyes front!" Jane
shouted. "Corporal, if your cadets don't know how to darn socks, they
should at least know how to pick ones out of the drawer than don't have
holes in them."
"Yes, sergeant. I have never known my cadets to let themselves down
like this before."
"I wonder if they've let themselves down, or if they've been let down
by their leadership, corporal."
"Sergeant, I..." Ryan stopped as Jane shot him a withering glance.
"Squad, take your socks off."
The cadets removed their socks and stood gingerly on the tarmac. By now
they were down to their plain green t-shirts and camouflage trousers,
and worried just how far this would go. Their worst fears were almost
"Now what is that?" Jane said as she walked back to the beginning of
the row, pointing at the bottom of Cadet Carter's trousers. He blanched
as her head drew level with his groin, but she was staring down. "No
belt and now your boots are off I can see the cuff of your left
trouser-leg is frayed." She was right. Without the boots on, his turnup
had slipped down, trailing split cotton thread. "Another cadet who
can't sew? Or is just too lazy to bother? Corporal, I'm afraid your
squad need to lose their trousers.
Ryan hesitated. None of the cadets drew a breath as this last sunk in
and they waited for Ryan's response.
"Cadets! Cadet Carter has truly let you all down. Take off your
The boys deflated with dread but again complied, unbuttoning their
flies and letting their trousers fall, then tugging them off and trying
not to fall over. Ryan briefly let himself take pride in the fact that
everyone was following his orders. Jane and Ryan moved on.
"Cadet Private Graham."
"Cadet Morris," Jane said to the cadet they'd just left behind. "Have
you by any chance been trying to clean your boots with Cadet Graham's
A couple of cadets in the back stifled laughs. Graham's t-shirt was
stained with large black streaks across the stomach, stains he'd gotten
when he was pumping up the tires on his bike.
"This is NOT acceptable!" Ryan shouted.
"Clearly your cadets think they can get away with all manner of sins in
the areas not usually on display," Jane said.
The cadets soon found themselves following orders to remove their
t-shirts. They were highly self-conscious now, naked from the waist up
and the hips down. Stripped of their uniforms, the boys had their
individuality restored, each wearing sporting underwear - boxers and
briefs and that type in-between, patterned and plain, pale and dark.
Jane was particularly taken with Stevenson's grey elasticated cotton
slip-ons. Ryan and Jane moved on, to cadets Robson and Williams.
"Not much left to inspect, is there, Williams?" She looked at William's
blue boxers, and then along the front row at the array of underwear.
She walked behind them and examined their rears, and then did the same
to the back row. She could find nothing wrong with any of their smalls.
She guessed they'd all taken to heart that constant mother's warning,
to wear fresh underwear in case you got hit by a car and stripped in
"Well, that all seems to be in order. At least your pants all look
clean and tidy, cadets." She arrived back at the front, standing next
to Ryan. Then she turned to him. "Corporal, I did ask if you were
familiar with collective responsibility, didn't I?"
"And you know this is your flight, and their performance reflects
entirely upon you as their NCO?"
She stared at him from the side. He glanced at her, trying to keep his
focus forward, trying to think of a way out of this. He could hear the
other cadets sniggering; for once he'd share in a group punishment.
"Yes, sergeant!" he shouted again, even though she hadn't said
anything. He knew he had no choice. Best to get it over with quickly.
Ryan grabbed his beret and pulled it off his head, dropping it to the
ground. He quickly took off his thick camouflage shirt and his t-shirt,
then bent down and undid his laces. He tugged off his boots and socks,
grimacing as his bare feet touched the rough and cold tarmac. He
straightened up and paused, glancing at the sergeant again. Her face
was like stone. He almost ripped his belt off and unsnapped his
trousers, dropping them to the floor.
The cadets exploded into laughter as Ryan struggled to get his trousers
over his feet, lost his balance and went sprawling at Jane's feet. He
clutched her knees and landed on his own, to avoid ending-up with his
face on the ground. She cleared her throat loudly and bucked her knees
to get him off. He put his hands down and kicked his trousers all the
way off, then pushed himself up, brushing the dirt off his knees and
palms. He tried to regain his composure as the laughter died away. His
face was bright red.
"Right," said Jane. She started walking around him, looking him up and
down. "I think that's all. I believe you have- wait." She stopped
walking, standing two feet behind him. "Corporal Perkins, what's that?"
Ryan stopped breathing. He turned his head, trying to see what she was
talking about. She was pointing at his arse. He felt round, trying to
think if he'd sat on the floor at any point. He brushed his seat,
couldn't feel anything.
"There is a hole, Corporal Perkins." Jane stepped forward, pinching the
thin material of Ryan's forest green boxer shorts. She stuck her
fingernail through the small hole, scraping the cheek beneath.
Ryan let out a little yelp as he felt the fingernail. His own hands
snapped round as Jane pulled hers away. He felt the material, felt the
hole, felt his skin exposed through it. She was right. Oh no...
"Corporal... once again, if you can't wear something that's properly
presented, you shouldn't be wearing it on parade at all. You should
have checked your underwear when you got it out of the drawer this
morning." Ryan had no way of knowing that if he had checked his boxers,
he'd have found every pair in the draw had a small hole snipped out of
the seat. "And I do hope those were clean on this morning," Jane
continued. "You know what you, and the rest of the cadets, have to do."
"Sergeant," he said pleadingly. "You can't be serious. I mean-"
"Corporal Perkins, do I look anything except serious?"
He to admit, she didn't. Throughout the whole inspection she had
remained serious and firm, the picture of military discipline and
authority. And orders are orders.
"Corporal, this flight has severely let itself down with its standard
of dress. Are you going to add insubordination to your failings?"
Ryan looked like he was going to cry. He bit his lip and swallowed.
"You... you all... you heard the sergeant! Let's... let's get it over
with." He tucked his thumbs into the waist band of his boxers and
pushed them straight down. The cadets stared daggers at him but when
Jane looked back at them, none had the will to resist.
They all pushed their underwear down to the ground. Jane wrestled away
the urge to smile, to scream with laughter as 12 penis popped out of
their constraints in front of her. She turned back and gazed at Ryan.
Although he was the oldest in the group, his penis and pubic hair were
no more developed than the boys who had just turned 14.
The cadets hastily covered their genitals and followed their corporal’s
lead in stepping out of their underpants and kicking them into their
individual piles of discarded clothes. Their hands were firmly in the
wrong place, in front of their pelvises rather than behind, but Jane
let it slide for the moment. She looked over the display of teenage
boys, some skinny and some podgy, some showing tan-lines some blushing
red all over, some with happy trails some hairless and Robson with a
small knot of hair on his chest.
"Attention!" Jane shouted. The boys snapped to attention, their penises
flopping about as they pulled their bodies taught and their arms darted
to their sides. They had all followed the order instantly, without
worrying about how exposed they'd be. Only now that they were standing
straight did they contemplate their nudity. But it was too late, they
couldn't break their stances now.
Again, out of uniform the boys were all clearly individuals. Some were
longer, some were thicker, Stevenson was circumcised. The younger boys
at the back had lighter, sparser sprigs of pubic hair sitting on top of
their genitals; the older boys had thicker bushes, Graham's so thick
that his shrunken cock was barely visible at all. It was a very warm
day but all the boys shivered as they felt the light breeze blowing
across areas that had never been exposed to the wind before.
"Alright, Cadet Corporal Ryan. I believe you were scheduled to do a
cross-country run and then aerobic exercises."
"A run around the school field, yes."
Jane was disappointed that it wouldn't be off the school grounds, into
the nearby woods perhaps.
"But... we can't..." Ryan said weakly. "Not like this."
"Hmm. You're right, corporal. Cadets, put your socks and boots back on."
The cadets frowned and looked at each other.
"It would be completely unacceptable to make you run around this field
in bare feet," she continued. "There's bound to be stones and glass out
there. Stand easy. Socks and boots on, go!"
The boys bent down and retrieved their socks, trying to balance and not
fall as they put them on.
"Sit down if you need to," said Jane. Most of the boys reluctantly
complied, parking their naked bottoms onto the rough tarmac. Each of
them stood back up as they finished and resumed their pose, privates
openly on view.
"Off you go then, corporal," said Jane.
Ryan walked to the left side of the squad, feeling ridiculous as he
felt his penis flopping against his balls.
"Right face!" he shouted. The cadets glanced sideways at each and
turned as a flock. "Double time, march!" And off they went, jogging,
their pale and naked behinds flashing in the mid-morning sun.
"Halt!" shouted Jane. "Oh dear, oh dear. You've managed to get dirt all
over your rear ends. On my command, each cadet will brush the dirt and
gravel off of the cadet in front of him. Squad, brush bottoms!" The
cadets deflated even further, their shoulders sagging as they each
reluctantly reached forward and started brushing the gravel off the ass
of the boy in front of them.
"Perkins, you'd better do both Greene and Williams." Ryan turned
slightly towards her. She could see he was holding back tears, what a
wimp! She walked behind him and he patted both bottoms in front of him.
"I'll do yours," Jane said sharply and she started slapping his ass
clean. He yelped and jumped forward a couple of paces, then resumed his
place as she finished.
"Alright, that looks fine. Off you go Perkins."
"Y-yes, sergeant. Squad, d-double time... march!" And off they went
"Corporal," Jane shouted after them, "remember to maintain discipline
"Yes sergeant," he shouted over his shoulder.
Jane watched as the thirteen naked cadets jogged off, two lines of six
with Ryan on his own at the back. She folded her arms and allowed
herself a smile.
None of the boys liked what was ahead of them: They normally ran five
circuits of the field, taking around thirty minutes. Running in the
nude, in the open, for thirty minutes... they all thought that maybe
the sergeant would let them off after one circuit, maybe she'd think
that was enough to teach them a lesson about proper uniform standards.
They ran in silence. Some of them felt like crying, but they all sucked
it in. They were men, cadets, soldiers in training. This was part of
the life, obviously. At least once they worked up a sweat it would
chase away their goosebumps. The sun shone but did nothing about the
chill in the spring air.
Half-way down the first stretch, along the line of impossibly tall fir
trees, Cadet Private Morris shattered the painful silence of the group
with a large fart.
"Sorry, lads," he said. "Nothing to keep it in, you see."
He laughed. They all laughed. They turned to look at each other,
smiling, starting to brighten up. Maybe it wasn't so bad. It was a
bonding experience. They just had to get through it and get back to
They turned the corner, leaving the trees for the high fence that
separated the field from the main road, they were all thankful the big
wooden panels masked them from the passing traffic. And then they saw
about a dozen kids in football kit, training by some cones half-way
down this stretch of the field. The under-16s First XI and substitutes.
But it was a Saturday morning, and the cadets knew this wasn't the
boys' football team; it was the girls'.
The girls of the football team were used to seeing the Air Cadets
running circuits around the edge of the school field every Saturday,
and they always flirted with them a little. The boys always puffed
themselves up, proud and macho in their camo uniforms. But they were
used to seeing greeny-brown figures running towards them, not pink ones.
"Are they running in their shorts?"
"I hope they've got nice legs."
"No. They're not... they're not wearing any shorts. They're naked!
They're totally naked!"
All the girls froze and squinted at the boys. She was right. The cadets
jogging toward them were completely nude. The girls started laughing
and whooping and running towards the edge of the field where the boys
would pass closest.
"Oh. My. God."
"Shit, I wish I'd brought my phone out."
"Oh my god, I can't believe this."
"What the hell are they doing?"
"It must be a dare."
"What, with each other?"
Realising the girls were going to be a close-up audience at any moment,
all the boys moved their hands to cover except Ryan. Still desperate to
regain his authority and ensure a good review from the visiting
sergeant, he gritted his teeth and shouted:
"Arms by your sides!" The cadets flashed him looks of utter hatred over
their shoulders, but he kept his jaw firm and they complied. He saw
they were looking at the girls, silently imploring them not to look, to
go away, to just disappear. "Eyes front!"
The girls shouted at them as they ran past:
"Did you boys forget something?"
"Got too hot, did you?"
"Look at those little things wiggle!"
"What are you idiots doing?"
"Hope you're all growers!"
"Knees up, lads."
"Ryan looks like one of the Year 9s!"
The captain looked over to the gym block to make sure their coach
wasn't on her way out to the field yet. Reassured, she called out to
"Hey, we should do some laps of the field too. Let's join in." The boys
grimaced as the girls jogged up and fell into formation beside them.
The girls paid scant attention to the route they ran on, concentrating
on the display of cocks, balls and buttocks bouncing up and down.
Back on the tarmac of the car park, Jane had retrieved two big sports
bags from her boot. She quickly piled the discarded shirts and trousers
and pants into them. She tossed her own beret and jumper on top of the
boys' clothes then hefted the two bags onto her shoulders. She walked
briskly to her car and loaded them onto the back seat. She untucked her
t-shirt as a faded brown Ford pulled in next to her. A boy her age got
out and she smiled at him.
"Cadet Sgt Locke?" she asked.
"Yes. Are you my welcome? Sorry I'm late, some girl fell off her bike
right in front of me and then insisted I drive her home."
"Well done, Kylie!" Jane thought to herself. "Oh, it's fine," she said
to Sgt. Locke. "The cadets are just running around the field."
Locke greeted another girl who had appeared from round the side of the
school wall. He couldn't see clearly as she darted past him, but he
thought she might be carrying a little video camera.
"I was just picking-up my cousin," said Jane as Liz got into the
passenger side. Inside the car, Jane grinned at her cousin and
whispered, "Sarah's plan worked perfectly." The two girls waved at
Locke and drove away.
Across the field, thirteen naked boys reached their half-way mark, with
fifteen grinning girls keeping pace with them.
