I looked down at my watch, 7:32pm. My head shifted up before me. The library’s main lobby was quiet, but crowded, a typical finals week. Dorm rooms and apartments lent themselves too often to either roommates that didn’t need to study, and therefore a distraction, or televisions and computer screens with other offerings.
The school library had always been a love/hate relationship for me, I always felt that the purpose of the place was to bore you so much that all you could really do was school work. And really as I looked around I couldn’t help but think how true it was. Bright, florescent bulbs shined from the ceilings, humming. Table after table spread out with students sitting at them, flipping through books, or scribbling notes, shushing you anytime you made any noise. Books and periodicals massed together in gray metallic shelves, row after row, after row. It still remained the thoroughly depressing place that I remembered. But whatever the case, if you were serious about doing well in school and didn’t view college as one long house party you ended up here, sooner or later.
I stood for a moment, in the main floor of the lobby, just in front of the circulation desk, thinking about where Whitney would probably be at this time of day. It was the evening, classes were done, she’d need to concentrate, so she’d go to the place least likely to distract her. That also happened to be the place hardest to have a conversation in.
That place happily referred to by students as the echo room. It was forty feet from floor to ceiling, just off of the main lobby. It was a place about the size of half a football field, with library offices overlooking a veritable sea of tables, chairs, and students studying in them. So called the echo room, because if you said anything louder than a whisper it would “echo” off of the walls and everyone would hear it.
That’s where I found Whitney, sitting just within, bent down over her books, engrossed and totally unaware of my approach. Her thick, red-framed glasses hanging loosely over her nose, as her head shifted between a book and her notebook.
My hand instinctively came to the device sitting in my front chest pocket. There it halted, pulling back. No, I wanted to see if I needed to even use it in he first place. Whitney wanted me, she never made me doubt that. She just had different priorities. I decided to sneak up on her and tap her on the shoulder.
Her head shifted up to me with a start, her eyes relaxed as she realized who it was, “Paul, what are you doing here?”
I shrugged,“Just coming to see how you’re doing. Is that wrong?”
She sighed, pulling her glasses off of her face and rubbing her eyes,“No...sorry, you know how crazy I get around finals week. I haven’t slept more than four hours for any of the last six days.”
I cocked an eye at her, opting for the slightly sarcastic, “You know sleep deprivation reduces productivity. It’s proven. That’s why I spent half the time you spend studying and writing papers.”
“Yeah, and how did that turn out for you?”
“I got mega stressed out in the days before things were due, had the habit of pulling all nighters every semester. I still got at least a B on most everything I did.”
“Well I’m sorry if some of us aren’t as smart as you are.”
I smiled broadly, “What can I say?”
“Excuse me,” my head turned up from Whitney to the man sitting farther down the table by her. As my eyes met his he continued “some of us our trying to study-“
I raised my hand up to stop him, “ I get it. I get it.” My head turned up to the room around us, other students were looking up at us with eyes like bloody murder. We were making too much noise. Well, I guess I was.
Whitney sighed, “Maybe we should carry this on somewhere else?”
Our feet echoed on the cold, marble steps as we worked our way down to the basement level. I kept shifting my attention back over to Whit as she walked down next to me. Through the stairwell doors we went, searching and finding an empty corner in the vast sprawl of bookcases among the low topped ceiling.
I turned towards her then,“So how are you?”
She sighed, her eyes looked away from me,“Stressed, tired, you know it.”
I took her hands in mine, looking into her downturned face,“You need a break girl.”
She looked up at me, a weak smile,“Yeah, you’re telling me. Just one more week of this shit.”
I brought myself up against her, slipping my right hand away from hers and laying it against the side of her face. I lifted my lips to hers. I felt that startled hesitation, that resistance for a moment as my warmth poured into her. After a moment she reciprocated the gesture. I saw her eyes close and I felt her relax as I did the same. For just a little bit our lips together danced.
Then she was pushing back against me, pushing away from me. “Paul...shit, you really don’t make this easy.”
I took in a deep breath and exhaled, obviously frustrated, “Can we at least talk? I’ve hardly seen you for the last three weeks.”
“Look, I have this big final I’m studying for tomorrow, and then I have to finish my poly sci paper for Tantalovich.”
I threw up my hands,“Just talk, you know relax for a little bit? Maybe it will even help you with all of that other stuff.”
Again she sighed. Her eyes looked up at me, unfortunately I noticed how they shifted to the door too.
I decided to keep at it. “How about after you’re done here? Later. You have to remember my own needs too.”
She pulled her hands up, giving me the familiar look that told me she was actually considering what I was saying.
“Look, you don’t have to make this decision now. When do you think you’ll be done here?”
She pulled out her cell,“10-10:30, somewhere in that area.”
“I’ll give you a call around 11, just an hour or two, we can talk school if you want. ”
She thought about it some more, but her head nodded slowly, “Thanks, Paul, give me a call, I’ll let you know.”
I turned to leave abruptly, but she grabbed my arm, pulling me in tight. Her lips collided with mine, her tongue pushing into my mouth. It was my turn to be startled. God I loved that woman.
After a few intense moments she pushed me back again,“Think that will get you through the night?”
I gasped, pushing the smile back for nonchalance, “Maybe.”
I watched as Whitney walked away from me, out the door and up the stairs, back to the echo, back to her books, back to studying. I sighed, I knew Whitney well enough to guess what she was going to say. It wasn’t going to be the answer I wanted. And normally I would have just dealt with it and waited the week out. It wasn’t like I really had an option or anything. Of course, now that I had one...
I waited for the sound of the messanine door opening and closing before acting. The device came up out of my pocket, my eyes looking at the number posted there, 007-196-567-309. During the conversation it had been pointed at her, the search button having brought the number up. I saved it to the gadget’s address book, making sure to tag it with the proper name. A smile came to my face then as my eyes stared up, my mind thinking about the large room and the pretty girl sitting at the table there.
Time to see if the number was right.
I gave it a couple more minutes down on the bottom landing before heading up the stairs myself. My head thought carefully on what I intended to do. It had to be harmless. It had to be mostly inconspicuous. But it had to confirm that I had what I needed.
I needed a place to observe Whitney without her knowing. I found it standing behind a shelf of books, not too far within the main lobby, but still well within good viewing distance of profile. I peeked through the tops of the books at her. She sat there, her head turning back and forth between a book and her notebook, her pen scribbling in it every couple moments. Her curly brown hair was pulled back in that pony tail, puffing out in the back. Her large breasts inches away from the table she was bent over. I could just make out the movements of her eyes as she looked over the text, her face an image of concentration.
I briefly checked the area around me to make sure no one was around to notice. Then I pressed the connect button on the blackberryish device. Her face went blank. She stopped in mid-scribble, her body bent over, the pen held in her hand. Her head pointed down at the book in front of her, but I could tell she wasn’t perusing it. Rather she sat frozen place, stuck in transition between actions. Like Katie had been when I’d pressed the button on her, Whitney waited for my command.
I brought the receiver up to my mouth, “Raise your right hand.”
Her slender arm lifted up towards the ceiling, pen still in the hand, the rest of her body still bent down over the table. Her head still crocked down and looking in the direction of her book.
I smiled and chuckled, even as I noticed other people glancing in her direction with strange looks of confusion on their faces.
I pressed the disconnect button, watching as her hand came back down, the momentary confusion crossing her face as she paused in her studies and looked around her. I smiled as she looked at her hand for a few moments, her eyes shifted back to her books, her head back to studying.
She had no idea what had just happened.
I shook my head grinning, heading towards the library exit as my mind began thinking about what I was going to do with her that night. My arm flipped to my wristwatch. It read 8:09pm. The outside cold hit me as I stepped out into the winter swollen campus. My mind thought about what I was going to do. I smiled as those thoughts came to my mind. It was going to be a good evening.
I just had to kill a couple hours.
I know what you’re thinking.
And it was a damn fine cup of coffee.
Whitney had been a studious person. Being as such she had gotten most of her tuition covered by merit based scholarships. Her mother, being the responsible person that she was, had started a mutual fund the day Whitney had been born to pay for college. She gave her an option, either she’d cover the rest of her tuition or pay for a reasonably priced apartment. Technically she didn’t need the apartment, but if she took the tuition that meant she would have had to live out of her mom’s house.
Which one do you think she went for?
I stood at the door into her apartment building, my eyes looking up at her window, the lights on. The night was cold, snow layering everything. My breath came in clouds as my cellphone was out of my pocket, my real cellphone. I dialed her number.
“Hey Whit, how’s it going?”
“Hey, shitty still. Working on a paper right now.”
“You want a break? I mean a real break.”
I heard her sigh on the other end. “I really wish it was that easy.”
“It is if you give it the chance.”
“I don’t know.”
“Look I’m downstairs, all you have to do is put on your coat and we can go get a cup of coffee, talk, chill out.”
I saw her come to the window then, her hand pushing away the curtain as she looked out at me. I waved back. Her eyes looked away. I saw her lift the phone up to her head. “Paul, if I let you in. If I do this, you know what is going to happen.”
“Maybe... No... I’ll spend way too much time with you and fail my paper.”
It was weird, but even knowing I had the device in my coat I still felt the disappointment with those words. I knew what would have happened then. Suddenly I knew what was really going to happen. My free hand came to my chest pocket, the blackberry type sitting there. My voice on the other end, silent.
“I promise to make it up to you” she said, her eyes looking down at me. “Please don’t be angry.”
I couldn’t help but lower my head, thinking. I sighed. “ I’m not, and I promise to wait. One more week.”
She smiled then. “You are the best boyfriend I’ve ever had. It’ll be a good night when I’m clear. Believe me. I want this as bad as you do.”
“Catch you later Whit.”
And I hung up, walking out of the courtyard as the curtain to her apartment was pushed back into place. In a normal world that would have been it. I would have taken the train home whacked off and gone to sleep. I genuinely liked Whitney, and it made me willing to deal with some of the things that came up, the normal things. She did the same with me. And normally I would have dealt with it. That was life.
My eyes turned down again to my chest pocket, the blackberryish device sitting there. I lit a cigarette and took a drag on it, my mind thinking.
At the moment I had a different set of rules I could play with.
I slipped my cellphone away and pulled the device out of my pocket. I toggled the icon to the contacts and dialed her number. I brought it to my head. “Strip down to your underwear.”
Truthfully I don’t know if it worked, and if it had I would have liked to have watched, but there were other things that I had in mind, and that was just the first part of it.
I walked back towards her apartment, smoke still in hand bidding my time as she began undressing herself. My eyes looked up again at the window. I couldn’t see what was happening, but I had enough faith in the item in my hand that it was working.
I used the cigarette as the timer, waiting until I was done with it to proceed.
I stood back at the door, flicking the butt away. I brought the blackberry again up to my head. “Buzz me in.”
The door jolted open as I heard the electric hum of the lock giving. Another few seconds and I was through the door, heading up the stairs to Whitney’s apartment. I could feel the anticipation building within me as my feet graced the steps.
I came to the door into her apartment. “Let me in.”
It opened before me, and there she stood, blank eyed and every bit the way I had told her. She had on a sky blue pair of panties and a white bra, and that was it. She stood at rest, her hand still gripping the knob of the entrance into her house. Her eyes stared vacantly forward just as they had with Katie, not looking at anything in particular.
I brushed past her, lifting her arm out of the way and closing the door behind me. I took in Whitney’s apartment. It was small, a studio, a bathroom just off to the right and the kitchenette on the otherside of the room. Her laptop sat open and running on a small table in between. In front of me sat her futon/bed splayed out , television sitting on the floor in front of it. It was a mess, as usual.
I pulled off the majority of my clothes, tossing them to the ground as I turned to face Whitney.
She was still facing the door behind me, hand part outstretched like the knob was still there.
I lifted the device up, “Lay out on the futon.”
She turned around and walked past me. She leaned her back against the blue cushion and layed her head down. She brought her slender legs up and together, leaning back like she was reclining for a painting or something. Her eyes stared up at the ceiling.
“Pull off your panties.”
She sat up briefly, arching her back so that she could pull those lace things off. She tossed them to the ground beside her and lay herself back in the same position she had been in before.
Her hairy slit lay perfectly exposed.
A smile came to my face. It was time for a finger fuck.
I placed the device on top of the television and stretched out beside her, my eyes traced her curvaceous body. They started at her fair sized apple breasts, not overly huge or sadly small, carefully concealed behind the simple white playtex. Slowly they slid down her caramel hips to her exposed slit. My hand ran along her smooth, slender legs.
I paused at her face, that slightly off center nose, and normally thoughtful dark eyes that seemed just a little large for her fragile face. My smile broadened, at those eyes staring emotionless up at the ceiling, her large lips parted slightly. This was my girlfriend, not the spitting image of perfection, but everything that I could have wanted at the moment.
And she would do anything that I told her to do. I took two of my fingers and plunged them up her waiting twat, my fingers searching for that fleshy tip that I knew women loved.
As I began working I saw Whitney’s eyes close, and those parted lips upturning slowly to a smile. Her breath picked up.
I cupped my other arm around her neck, bringing my face close to hers, licking the side of her cheek as my other hand did rotations on her love slit. After a few moments I moved my head away from the side of her face and brought my lips up to hers. I felt her hips pushing back and forth into my deep penetration as her lips parted for mine. The warmth of her mouth spread out and into me.
Other than that she did nothing. Her arms lay at her side. As my lips pulled back from hers, and my finger came out of her twat her body pulled back against the cushion. Her eyes opened again with that blank stare.
She waited again. She waited for whatever I had to offer. She would respond to anything that I did. She would give in to anything that I did. But she wouldn’t act of her own accord. Again my eyes looked up and down her half naked body. In one sense it was nice. But in the other it was the problem.
This wasn’t fully what I wanted. After the first couple times Whitney had learned how I liked to do it. And it was actually pretty close to how she liked it. It was usually about the slow build up, the careful explorations or re-explorations of each other, leading up to the rhythmic penetration. On those occassions when we hadn’t seen each other for awhile, it would be straightforward, intense, crazy. And at those moments I loved that too.
But I’d already done the straightforward, intense with Katie. I found myself wishing for something more intricate, something that the device, with its current setting, couldn’t supply for me, the sexual understanding you get with any girlfriend you’ve been having sex with for awhile.
At the risk of sounding like a woman. I liked warm, careful, foreplay.
Again I found my eyes drifting to the top of the television, to the weird remote sitting there, the icon blinking next to the words “introduction.” I suddenly remembered that there’d been a second part to it that I hadn’t tried out yet. I didn’t even know what it would offer, but maybe it would fix the problem that I had at that moment.
In any case I was going to find out.
I stood up from the futon and retrieved the blackberry from on top of the television. My thumb came to the button by the blinking icon, the words, “introduction.”
I watched as my girlfriend stood up half naked, her face still blank, her body facing away from me. “Hello, this person’s name is...Whitney” spoken in the remembered monotone “...she is here to walk you through and practice on all of the different features that come with your device.”
I walked up to my girlfriend and carefully unhooked the bra from around her chest, exposing those bare, caramel mounds. I brought my tongue up to her nipples, licking the tips a few moments before my whole mouth poured onto her soft flesh.
I’d heard that part before, and frankly I wondered why I should be bored waiting when a perfectly nice, compliant female stood half naked in front of me.
“-when your finished, press the ‘continue’ button to find out about other features.” Whitney finished those words, here eyes still faced in that same direction, but I’d taken the liberty of pulling her top off as she’d gone through her little speech.
Caught up, I pulled back from her chest, my body rolling out behind her. Snug behind her back and swaying her my left hand wrapped around her and began kneeding one of her breasts. Her lithe body felt warm against my bare chest. She moved, unresisting, to my rhythm, her arms hanging loosely at her sides. My cock tented in its boxers rubbing against the round of her butt.
I was so aroused, but I had to pay attention. I hadn’t heard the next part. I lifted the device up in my other hand and pressed the ‘continue’ button.
“The second feature is a bit more complicated,” she began, “ it involves the texting feature connected with the device, hence the mini-keyboard. “
My eyes shifted to the device. I nodded slowly.
“The texting feature, activated like a typical cellphone, plants thoughts, ideas, and beliefs into the brain of the subject. For example, you can make...Whitney...like burnt food, or raw eggs, or any other type of food she may be inclined against simply by typing in ‘You like burn food and raw eggs’ and sending the message to the connected number.”
A smile came to my face at these words. This was what I had wanted. My mind began thinking about what I could make Whitney want to do. There was always those one or two things that I was into that she really wasn’t. Which meant that I could, and that I would.
“Be advised though,” she continued, “all changes take place in real time, as in the subject is not shifted to the current drone state when sending these messages. Subject is conscious, but unaware of those changes as they occur. When you are ready to try out this section, simply press the ‘disconnect’ button and use the texting function like you would on a regular cellphone. That is it for the introduction, I hope you have fun with...Whitney.”
I stepped back from my girlfriend, picking my clothes up off of the ground and putting them back on. I raised the receiver to my head, “Get dressed in the same clothes you had on.”
Whitney instantly complied, bending over and retrieving her clothes from the ground.
I walked over to her kitchenette and opened the fridge, pulling out a beer that I’d left there last time I had been over. I was already forming a story in my head that I was going to tell her. I wanted as little to be out a place as I could reasonably manage.
As I took a couple swigs of the beer I crocked my head up from the fridge to see how Whitney was coming along. She was done, dressed like she had been, standing, waiting for me to give her another command.
I walked over to the laptop and kicked the screensaver off. The portion of a half finished paper sat on MS Word. Good.
“Take a seat at your laptop and get back to writing your paper.”
Whitney brushed passed me like I wasn’t there, taking a seat at the table next to where I was standing. Her blank facial expression didn’t change, but she did start putting words to print. She was actually making progress much faster than I’d seen her before. I waved my hand in front of her, but she seemed to ignore it, turning her head to the open book beside her on the table.
They really could do anything that they normally would be able to do. They just wouldn’t remember it.
I chuckled as I pulled a seat up next to her, my eyes looking at the screen as she typed, completely oblivious of me. I couldn’t help, but wave my hand in front of her face like I had with Katie. She stopped when I obstructed her view, but went right back to it the moment I moved my hand away. I smiled. Everything was set in place. All I needed to do was play dumb. My finger came to the ‘disconnect’ button.
Her body started for a moment, she took in a deep breath and her eyes closed.
“You okay?” I said trying to sound as concerned as I possibly good.
She startled, her eyes opened as she looked at me, confusion ran clearly over her face. “Paul?”
She paused for a second, her head looked over her room for a few moments before she turned back towards me. “How did you get in here?”
“Uh, you let me in” I said matter of factly.
“I thought I said I couldn’t stand you distracting me.”
I nodded, “Yeah, you did, and then you called me and asked me to come back and help you, so I did. Is something wrong?”
She pulled back for a moment. I could see her mind trying to remember. “I don’t remember that.”
“Maybe,” she paused, “that’s never happened to me before though.”
I shrugged, smiling, “Maybe lack of sleep is giving way to a split personality, one that wants to lure her boyfriend in with the promise of studying and then hop his bones instead. ”
She cocked an eye at me. I just kept smiling. She sighed, rubbing her forehead.
“Or maybe you just need some sleep” I said with a touch of concern. She shook her head, “I have to finish this paper for tomorrow, Tantalovich isn’t the type of person to give extensions.”
“I think he might make a special exception for you ,” I said with a smile, my mind thinking about the blackberry sitting in my coat on the floor.
“No he won’t.”
I sighed, this play was starting to bore me. I just wanted to get things going.“You want me to get out of here?”
I grabbed my things and made to leave. “Paul,” she said.
I turned towards her. “What?”
“Thanks again. I’m sorry for all of this.”
I smiled “No worries.” And boy wasn’t it.
I closed the door to her apartment behind me, walking down one flight of stairs and waiting on the landing. My head arched back towards her apartment door. In the safety of the empty stairwell and away from her prying eyes I realized it was time to get to work.
I pulled the device out of my pocket, my fingers bringing up her number, ready to type in what I wanted her to think. It’s amazing how fast your mind works when you know the potential for your every fantasy lays easily before you. I knew as my fingers starting punching in the words that I wanted to start out fairly slow, seeing how much it actually worked before trying more extreme things.
U were rough on Paul. He won’t distract u. U should let him back in. I typed into the blackberry and pressed ‘send.’
My cellphone rang about thirty seconds later. Not surprising it was Whitney on the other end.
Whatever Paul types into his blackberry is not worth taking notice of.
“What’s up Whit?”
U R very sorry about the way u treated him.
“I’m sorry about the way I treated you. If you want to come by, not saying you want to after how I’ve been, but I- you can.”
Again that stupid broad smile of mine, “I don’t want to impose.”
U really want him to come by.
“I really would like to see you. You’re not imposing.”
“Alright, I see you in about fifteen minutes.” I flipped my cellphone shut. In all honesty I just wanted to maintain the illusion that I had just walked outside her house. I could already feel my cock hardening. This night was going to be better than I thought it would be.
