I knew waking up Monday morning was gonna be interesting as it would be the first day after we had the weekend of fun with Julia and Tasha. I half expected Maxie to be sitting in the desk chair rocking back and forth in the middle of one of her classic break downs. But as I got up I discovered that...she was nowhere to be found. Which worried me even more when I checked the bathroom and found she wasn't there either.

"Hey, have you seen Maxie?" I asked Patty (Peterson), after opening my door as she swayed down the hallway.

"Sorry," Patty said. "She go missing again?"

"What do you know about her going missing?" I asked.

"Cally everyone knows you and her fight a lot and when she runs off she gets shit faced," Patty said. "It's not exactly a secret."

"True," I said as I looked down the hall and smiled as Maxie rounded the corner and came my way with a soda in hand. "Looks like I found her."

"Oh yeah, tell Cindy to call me," Patty said as I nodded and she walked off and Maxie joined me.

"Where have you been?" I asked as she took a drink of soda and unleashed a bombshell with, "I wanna break-up."

"What?"

"I wanna break up," Maxie said. "I don't love you."

"Well I don't love you either cunt," I snapped.

"No, you don't," Maxie said. "That's the problem. We don't love each other."

"Max, I'm not so sure about that," I said in protest.

"Yes you are," Maxie said as she finished her soda and slipped past me and into the room as I closed the door. "This weekend really brought things into perspective for me."

"You don't even know what perspective means," I said as she laughed and shrugged.

"So can we still be friends or am I kicked out of the group?" Maxie asked as she changed into a pair of clean panties. I sat down on the bed still reeling from the announcement that my girlfriend had just dropped on me. "Hello?"

"What?"

"Can we still be friends?" Maxie repeated. "I really wanna be because I like Mindy and Cindy..."

"What the fuck do they have to do with us breaking up?" I asked in frustration.

"Their members of our circle," Maxie pointed out. "So friends or what?"

"I don't wanna break up," I declared.

"Yes you do," Maxie said. "You like that Bre girl you were flirting with at the park. The one who calls you Albert."

"I barely know her Max but I been with you for three months," I said. "Let's just talk about this later when we have more time?"

"No, I wanna be done with it so we can both move on," Maxie insisted. "That way you can have Julia and Tasha down every weekend and fuck them until your tired."

"This is about them?" I asked.

"Partly," She said. "I realized you wanted them more than me."

"It was your idea to invite them down you psycho," I said as I stood and felt like punching her.

"And now it's my idea to break up," She said with a wide grin. "See how full of good ideas I am?"

"Your full of something alright," I said as I glared at Maxie as she put on her coat and headed for the door.

"So we cool?" Maxie asked.

"Noooo," I practically screamed. "I told you I don't wanna break up."

"Well, I'm breaking up with you," Maxie said calmly. "So I hope we can be friends but if not I've gotten pretty good at taking care of myself."

"What is wrong with you?" I asked as she opened the door.

"I don't know," Maxie said. "You were my first girlfriend so this is all new to me. But I guess I'll find out now, huh?"

"We are so over Maxine Taylor Psychopath Bradlidge," I said as she shrugged and walked off down the hall, passing Lisa (Wilcox) and disappearing around the corner and out of my life. "Hey Lisa."

"Hey Cal, was that Maxie leaving?" Lisa asked as she sorted through the mail in her hand.

"Yeah it was," I said in a depressed voice. "Why?"

"Is she OK?" Lisa asked.

"No, she's never been OK," I said. "Why?"

"I was just downstairs checking mine and Patty's mail and I heard Maxie on the phone with some woman," Lisa said. "You know the pay phone in the lobby?"

"Yeah, yeah, what was she saying?" I asked.

"Something about begging the woman not to make her come home," Lisa said. "She was crying and everything. Her Mom on the phone?"

"Her Mom is a drunk and calls all the time to harass her," I said. "That's probably who it was."

"Well that's not all," Lisa said. "I went to get me some fruit sticks out of the machine and I saw Maxie going into the bathroom. She passed me coming back by and when I went into the bathroom I found powder on the back of the sink. You think she might be doing drugs?"

"That explains why she was so calm while she broke up with me," I said.

"I am so sorry," Lisa said. "Is it really over?"

"Yeah I think so," I said. "I'm tired of the roller coaster that is Maxie Land."

"Want a fruit stick?" Lisa offered as I smiled and gladly took one. "I hope you two can work it out."

"I think hope is gone," I said solemnly, "And oh yeah I always wondered this, how long have you and Patty been together?"

"Oh no you're not gonna catch me in that, Lisa said as I giggled, "We're not together, we just pretend to be lesbians."

/\ {* ~ *} /\ DAKOTA'S PERSPECTIVE /\ {* ~ *} /\

"Why don't you take me out in the snow and do some wonderful things to me?" Mindy whispered in my ear as we sat in the corner of the cafeteria and watched it snow outside. "Huh?"

"You'd seriously do that?" I asked as she grinned knowingly. "Cause it does sound like a really fun idea."

"We could maybe take Cindy's sleeping bag down by the lake and make love in it?" She whispered as I nodded my head and kissed her lips softly. "Probably be after Christmas break though...oh no, oh no this is not good."

"What?" I asked as I watched her go through a mini-panic attack.

"We're gonna be apart for two whole weeks," Mindy said. "What are we gonna do?"

"Cell phones and lots of minutes," I said as she smiled. That always makes my heart beat faster. "I have one at home but Mom won't pay for me to have one here so I'm cut off from the outside world."

"No, you're not," Mindy said as she turned and laid back into my arms happily, "I am your world."

"Yes you are," I said as I hugged her and kissed her cheek as she giggled. A shadow appearing above us as both of us froze and looked up to see a girl neither of us had ever seen before. "Can I help you?"

"You two seem nice and everybody else in this place is rude or worse," She said. "Can I sit with you?"

"Of course," Mindy chirped as the girl smiled and sat down beside us. "I'm Mindy and this is my beloved, Dakota."

"I'm Lia and that is the first time I've heard anyone say beloved since my grandparents," Lia said as Mindy blushed.

"I'm her girlfriend," I said as we both shook Lia's hand.

"So I'm new here, obviously, and don't have any friends yet," Lia said after a momentary silence. "Though I do know..."

"Well you have friends now," Mindy said.

"You don't need to interrupt her," I said as Mindy blushed.

"I was gonna say that I know one person here already but no one else," Lia said.

"I wonder if it's anyone we know," Mindy said.

"Not unless you know a Misti Gale Grider," Lia said as she took a bite of food. Mindy and I looking at each other in surprise that someone from Misti's past had arrived on campus. "Do you know her? I've been trying to get up with her with very little success so far."

"Yeah we know her a little bit," I said. "How do you know her exactly?"

"Old girlfriend," Lia said as she took another bite and seemed taken aback by mine and Mindy's shocked looks. "What?"

"Do you mean girlfriends dating or just girl friends?" I asked to clarify.

"Dating," Lia said. "Course by now she's probably already hooked up with someone else and I'll be out of luck. I can already see that this place looks like a breeding ground for lesbian couples. You guys are like the fourth couple I've seen holding hands, kissing or just letting it be known that they're together in some way."

"You were dating Misti Grider?" Mindy asked to verify.

"Yes," Lia said to confirm.

"Misti Grider..." Mindy said before going onto describe the girl in detail. "That Misti Grider?"

"Yes, why does it seem like you're so shocked that I dated Misti?" Lia asked and it suddenly became clear that she was completely clueless about Misti's appearant transformation from lesbian (or something that resembled one) into a bully that most people in school hate.

"Because the Misti we know is a bully and thug who runs with this other girl Selena who is her muscle," I said as Lia's mouth dropped open in surprise.

"No, no, that can't be Misti," Lia said. "She's a pussy cat. She never even raised her voice to me when we dated and we dated for a long time, like 6 months, before her parents caught us and sent her here."

"Her parents made you break up?" Mindy asked curiously.

"Yeah, they caught us kissing on the deck when everyone was supposed to be gone for a few hours and all hell broke loose. Her mom starts screaming and her looney tunes Dad starts quoting verses from the bible and Misti, my poor sweet Misti just melts down and starts crying. They ran me off that night and I had to walk home four miles in the dark on a deserted country road."

"No wonder she turned into a bully her parents sound horrible," Mindy said as Lia nodded her agreement.

"You haven't heard the half of it," Lia said. "They tried to get people to stop shopping at my Dad's grocery store because he had a daughter who was gay even though their daughter was the one who hit on me the first time."

"So how did you end up here?" I asked.

"I acted depressed until my parents agreed to send me here," Lia said as Mindy and I laughed. "Believe me my parents aren't much better but at least they try to care about me. That's more than I can say for Misti's horrible spawn of Satan parents."

"So you're here to get her back?" Mindy asked.

"I was but if she's become what you say then I doubt I can," Lia said. "Besides we haven't talked since she left home and she may not even feel the same way she did back then. It's been a long time and feelings sometimes change when you're out of sight out of mind, you know?"

"Very true," Mindy agreed and then turning to me and saying, "She's right and you're not going home for Christmas because I'm not gonna take a chance on being out of sight out of mind when it comes to you."

"You're already out of mind," I said to Mindy before kissing her. "I love you. Stop being so paranoid."

"I remember when Misti and I were like that," Lia said. "Though we could never be that open. We always had to sneak around and stuff."

"Bell," I said as it rung and signaled that it was time to get to class. "It was nice meeting you."

"You too," Lia said. "Maybe I can sit with you again tomorrow?"

"Anytime," Mindy said as all three of us rose and Lia smiled once more before she walked off and disappeared into the crowd. "I would love to be there when she finally does run into Misti."

"Me too," I said as Mindy hugged me and we shared one last kiss before heading back off to class.
