Ah, The Waifs.
For now, you won't find this stoy on this site. The reason is simple: it needs a good second draft. When I started writing again, after a good long layoff (the art on this page is from a failed comic book version I was doing with artist Martina Pilcerova in 1994), I used a hard deadline of at least a chapter a week, preferably two, to force a first draft out of me. This was posted at Storiesonline.net as it was written. With the help of first time editor SciFi Nut, I finished the tale in 24 chapters.
There it still sits, in vital need of changes.
The process helped my writing greatly. So much so, that I'm unwilling to put it up here as is. If you'd like to read it, you can find it here. I have started editing it, but who knows if and when I'll finish.
Maybe I need a deadline.
