Gliedist: Interlude 01 (Codes: SciFi, MF, nosex) [posted 2013-05-05: 1,056 words]
Dr. Hiram Alexander, as a young man, has a vision. He wants to
create the first fully self aware non-organic being. After years
of writing the code and building the hardware to support the
code, he takes the plunge and tells the computer to link all the
modules.
He apparently succeeds, but on his interstellar trip to Deneb, where he
can do the final testing and have his creation take the Turing Battery
of tests, they get caught up in an emergency rescue that taxes both of
their skills... and reveals some of their weaknesses.
'Gliedist: Chapter 01' is the first installment in a longer work that
is only one of my planned tributes to the early days of science
fiction, and the authors who wrote during those decades.
The Hot Tub Five: part 01 (Codes: MF+, rom, caution) [posted 2012-03-04: 34,800 words]
Bill
works in a warehouse, and is in his late thirties. It's laundry
day, and he's gone to the laundromat he's been using since he was a
teenager.
Kate is a regular at the same laundromat. This
evening, instead of doing her laundry and going home, she gets Bill to
help her, then surprises him by asking if he'd like to have a
relationship with her. After a brief discussion, to sort out the
conditions, he agrees to follow her home so he can meet the other three
women who live in the same house. All of them, including Bill,
have reasons they are not involved with someone else.
Eventually,
Bill decides that the only relationship that makes sense, is for him to
get involved with the four women, and that Kate will be his primary
significant other.
Author's note: The character studies
were done for this story. After I wrote most of it, I decided
that I wanted to take Bill and Sarah, then put them in a story of their
own, while keeping them mostly the same people as they were in this
work.
Take Two: part 01 (codes: MF, nosex) [posted 2012-03-04: 32,731 words]
This
one is here because of the opening, which has the beginings of a sex
scene, that gets interrupted. I wrote most of this one in early
2009, while the economy was stilll... terrible. Bill is
white, and the senior equipment operator at a trucking hub. Sarah
is black, and a senior bank teller. They've been doing their
laundry at the same laundromat for a decade, and been informal friends
for most of those years. Both have pasts that make them reluctant
to get involved in a serious relationship again. Sarah has
decided to push things a little, finally, and seek a serious
relationship with Bill. He agrees, then follows her home for
dinner, and whatever might happen between them.
They are in the
middle of getting their first sexual contact started, when Bill gets a
phone call, to go help during an emergency at the warehouse.
From there, both of their lives go in a direction neither one of them expected.Author's
note: The title of this one came about because it is a 'second
take' on the relationship between these characters. Bill and Sarah are also primary characters in The Hot Tub Five.
