Polaris

There is a supernova close to the north polar star, which produces an electromagnetic pulse that, when arrives to The Earth, destroys all electronic equipment situated in a region exposed enough to the radiation, the so-called blackout zone. Because of the location of the Supernova close to the north pole, the blackout zone is basically any region at the north of a line that is like the Tropic of Cancer slightly tilted.

The wasted equipment includes in practice almost every modern electric equipment, and basic infrastructure, industry, and telecommunications would stop working.

Many southern countries would suddenly have the opportunity to invade the north.
