There
are a number of graphic representations (illustrations or photographs)
of bdsm from the 1920s and 1930s, most often from Europe and most
of those from France. The majority of these representations are
of females in submissive postures, though examples of dominant females
with submissive males do exist.
Bernard Montorgueil's illustrations, as published in Gilles Néret's
Erotica Universalis: From Pompeii to Picasso (Köln:
Taschen, 2005), were an influence on the story, indirectly and directly.
Biederer/Ostra
studio in Paris, working in the 1930s, created images of the more
prevalently shown submissive female. In the United States, Charles
Guyette was active in New York City in the 1930s and very early
1940s, selling fetish, bondage and S&M photographs. To the left
is a Charles Guyette photo that I have.
